32-year-old first baseman Freddie Freeman, once of baseball’s best hitters, entered the lockout without a home. After 12 years with the Braves and coming off a championship, the assumption is that Atlanta remains the favorite.
The last information we have on Freeman’s negotiations with the Braves dates back to mid-November. On November 12th, Bob Nightengale of USA Today put it this way, reporting from the GM Meetings in Carlsbad:
“Free agent Freddie Freeman was on the mind of every team seeking a first baseman, with Freeman rejecting Atlanta’s five-year, $135 million offer, and seeking closer to a six-year, $200 million deal. Yet, you couldn’t find a soul who believes Freeman won’t be returning to Atlanta.”
Jon Heyman of MLB Network generally concurred in a report four days later, writing, “Last heard 6th year was still at issue in Freeman/Braves talks but situation is fluid and they’ve still got to be considered the favorite.” A few weeks after that, Heyman suggested the Dodgers, Yankees, and Blue Jays are “trying to pry” Freeman away from the Braves, even though those clubs find it unlikely.
Will the Braves or Freeman crack on the sixth year issue once the lockout ends? Would Freeman take a lower AAV than the expected $30MM+ to convince the Braves to commit to a sixth year, perhaps at something like six years and $160MM? Whatever needs to happen to get it done, the impending lockout did not create enough pressure to result in an agreement. You’d have to think Freeman’s chances of leaving the Braves are around their highest point, whatever those chances are. The Braves have let it get to a point where Freeman has no team, and other teams likely made offers.
Let’s assume something like MLBTR’s six-year, $180MM projection would be needed to lure Freeman away from the Braves. Signing Freeman would also likely require draft pick forfeiture. If not the Braves, which teams could reasonably do that contract? Let’s start by assessing Heyman’s trio.
- Dodgers: The Dodgers doing a six-year contract for another team’s 32-year-old free agent? Andrew Friedman has been in charge for seven years now, and he’s given out four-plus years to another team’s free agent two times: four years to Brandon McCarthy in 2014, and four years to AJ Pollock in 2019. Under Friedman, the club did go to four years to retain Justin Turner and Chris Taylor and five to keep Kenley Jansen in free agency. They also notably did a 12-year extension with Mookie Betts before he played a regular season game with the team. But six years to Freeman along with the forfeiture of the Dodgers’ second and fifth round draft picks? I just don’t see it. Signing Freeman would also require Max Muncy to spend more time at second or third base, but the addition of an NL DH could alleviate a potential logjam.
- Yankees: The Yankees basically did nothing to improve the team prior to the lockout, so there’s the idea they could add Freeman’s sweet-swinging lefty bat in lieu of their more pressing need at shortstop. Even if Freeman costs $180MM, that’s still likely over $100MM less than Carlos Correa. The team could and would likely have to exceed a new 2022 competitive balance tax threshold to sign Freeman, but they may be willing to do so after staying below the line in 2021. Adding Freeman would do nothing to solve the shortstop issue, and it would also crowd out Giancarlo Stanton, DJ LeMahieu, Luke Voit, and Gleyber Torres to a degree. One of them could be traded to accommodate Freeman. Still, Freeman is an imperfect fit for a team that is also in need of rotation help.
- Blue Jays: Speaking of imperfect Freeman fits, the Blue Jays currently have Vladimir Guerrero Jr. entrenched at first base. Assuming Freeman doesn’t intend to mostly shelve his first baseman’s glove, Vlad Jr. would have to spend most of his time at designated hitter – fresh off a second-place MVP finish and Silver Slugger award. A shift back to third base for Guerrero would seem even more risky. It’s also worth noting that signing Freeman would permanently plug up Toronto’s DH spot, where George Springer spent nearly half his games in 2021. I think the Blue Jays could swing the financial commitment to Freeman, and I get the idea of replacing Marcus Semien’s bat, but this is not a great roster fit.
So we’ve looked at the three teams Heyman linked to Freeman, and none seem like a perfect fit. Let’s look at all the other even slightly plausible options.
-
- White Sox: They’ve got Jose Abreu at first base, but only through 2022. They’ve also got flexibility in the DH spot, so the roster fit could work. Financially, though, I’d be quite surprised to see the White Sox make this level of commitment given their current payroll situation.
- Tigers: There’s a sense that the Tigers have finished their major spending after the Javier Baez and Eduardo Rodriguez signings. But man, would Freeman be a game-changer in Detroit. They’ve got Jonathan Schoop at first base and Miguel Cabrera at DH, neither of whom should block a player like Freeman. Freeman could get in the way of top prospect Spencer Torkelson, who played more first base than third this year in the minors. Plus, the club has Jeimer Candelario at third base. I don’t think the Tigers will pursue Freeman, but if they had the desire to spend the money I think the roster could be figured out.
- Red Sox: The Red Sox have Bobby Dalbec at first base, who came on very strong in the season’s final two months. They’ve got J.D. Martinez at DH, but only for one more year. They also have first base prospect Triston Casas. Roster-wise, the Red Sox have good options at first for the long-term, though no established Major Leaguers. They also have a GM who’s yet to give a free agent more than $14MM. As with Andrew Friedman, this just doesn’t seem like Chaim Bloom’s way of doing things.
- Astros: The Astros have Yuli Gurriel at first base, but only for one more year. They’ve got Yordan Alvarez as the regular DH. Signing Freeman would probably necessitate a Gurriel trade. The Astros do have the payroll flexibility to accommodate Freeman, but they seem like yet another big market club that would shy away from signing a corner infielder through age 37 – especially since they don’t seem to want to pay Carlos Correa past age 31.
- Angels: The Angels are committed to Shohei Ohtani as DH for two more years, and they’d surely like to lock up the AL MVP beyond that. And Jared Walsh took over first base quite capably for the Halos this year. Like the Yankees, shortstop and the rotation are more pressing needs. It’s difficult to see Freeman landing here.
- Mariners: The Mariners have Ty France at first base, plus Evan White under contract through 2025. They don’t have a set DH, but Kyle Lewis and Luis Torrens are projected to spend time there in 2022. France could potentially play some second or third base, if the Mariners decided to accommodate Freeman. The Mariners spent big on Robbie Ray and traded for Adam Frazier, but they’re known to be in the hunt for a significant position player addition. I consider Freeman within the realm of possibility, though the more versatile Kris Bryant would fit better if the price tag is similar.
- Rangers: The Rangers have Nathaniel Lowe at first base, and no set DH. Lowe had a nice year for a player who hits the ball on the ground 55% of the time, but bumping him to DH for Freeman wouldn’t be problematic. It’d be staggering for the Rangers to add Freeman after already committing $561.2MM to four free agents, though they could afford it. Pitching has to be a higher priority for this team, but who’s to say they can’t do both?
- Cubs: The Cubs have Frank Schwindel penciled in at first base after a strong couple of months, and no NL team has an incumbent DH. Schwindel is 29 and there was nothing special about his exit velocity or launch angle even in his successful stint. Pushing Schwindel to DH for Freeman wouldn’t be an issue, and the team did make a statement with the Marcus Stroman signing. But that was a surprisingly short three-year deal, and with Freeman we’re talking about double that term to a player who is 19 months older. Freeman just doesn’t fit with the long-term payroll flexibility GM Jed Hoyer enjoys.
- Cardinals: The team has Paul Goldschmidt under contract for three more years, but again, an NL DH would open things up. Signing Freeman would mean stretching payroll to a franchise record, and I doubt the team considers first base/DH a position of need.
- Marlins: The Marlins have Jesus Aguilar under control for next year, but he’s not much of an impediment for a player like Freeman. Here, it’s all about money. A team with a $65MM payroll can afford Freeman, but Avisail Garcia’s $53MM deal seemed like the Marlins’ big free agency strike. Freeman would require more than triple that commitment.
- Mets: The Mets have to be listed here in the name of, “How crazy can Steve Cohen get?” Crazy enough to add Freeman to the $254.5MM the club already committed to free agents this winter, while also forfeiting the 14th pick in next year’s draft? Even with a more significant need in the rotation? I don’t expect Cohen to steal Freeman away from the Braves, but it’d be the ultimate power move.
- Phillies: The Phillies have Rhys Hoskins for two more years. He’s been an excellent hitter, though he will be coming off lower abdomen surgery. The Phillies’ needs at shortstop, third base, left field, and center field are much more stark than at first base/DH. They also have a fairly bloated payroll situation. I suppose Dave Dombrowski could simplify and try to sign Freeman in the name of adding the top bat, but it’d be a surprising choice.
- Nationals: One year of Josh Bell wouldn’t block Freeman. And should the Nats really take any kind of step back with only three more years of control of Juan Soto? But it just doesn’t sound like the Nationals are looking to take on a commitment of this nature this winter.
- Rockies: They’ve got C.J. Cron at first base, but could easily move him to DH for Freeman. The Rockies have relatively modest commitments, which drop quite a bit as of 2024. As a team with real and surprising interest in Kris Bryant, we should consider a possible pursuit of Freeman as well.
- Padres: Freeman is an excellent roster fit for the Padres, who have an underperforming Eric Hosmer locked in through 2025. The team’s payroll is pushing $200MM already, so GM A.J. Preller would need to get creative and move contracts to fit Freeman in. It’s a possibility that can’t be ruled out.
- Giants: The Giants haven’t really demonstrated their financial might yet, committing $99.4MM to four free agents without topping Anthony DeSclafani’s $36MM. DH is the ideal spot for the injury-prone Brandon Belt. Farhan Zaidi does seem to come from the increasingly common GM school of thought that eschews long-term free agent commitments, even in big markets. He’d have to buck that trend to sign Freeman, but otherwise it’s reasonable enough.
- Brewers: The Brewers are a contending team with Rowdy Tellez penciled in at first base, so they at least warrant a mention. It’s just hard to see them outbidding the field to land Freeman in that $180MM range. I could write something very similar for the Guardians.

I don’t hate the White Sox fit
The Baseball Fan
At DH he would be very nice. Just have to trade Sheets and Burger in that case
Please, Hammer. Don't hurt 'em.
I think the Dodgers are the best fit. They can just move Muncy over to 2nd and let Turner take Seager’s old spot. They also have money and need to add someone big after losing Seager and Scherzer. If the Yankees or Phillies decide to spend that kind of money they need to do it on someone like Correa or Story. The Giants and Mariners aren’t terrible fits. I don’t think the White Sox will spend that kind of bread. Most of the other teams are either in the same boat as the White Sox or are just bad fits. I would say chances are:
1. Braves
2. Dodgers
3. Giants
4. Mariners
5. The Field as anyone else is too much of a long shot to rank even close to those 4.
I didn’t realize Hosmer still has 4 years left on that deal. Wow. I predict the Padres can’t move that contract for at least 2 more years and probably 3. I don’t think any team is going to be willing to eat that bad deal for more than one year. Acquiring Hosmer now would be similar to an organization saying they don’t expect to contend for at least 4 more years. That doesn’t really excite the fans base.
Please, Hammer. Don't hurt 'em.
The Braves still really make the most sense on paper. They don’t have a minor league first baseman to replace him so they would have to trade for Olson or move Riley to first.
If Freeman leaves one way they could satisfy the fan base is by moving Riley to first and make a big push to trade for Jose Ramirez. I think they have the prospect capital to do it. What do you guys think it would take for the Braves to get Ramirez? Would a package centered around 2 or 3 of Pache, Waters and Contreras while throwing in maybe Touissaint, Newcomb and possibly Shewmake get it done? I know the last 3 aren’t very big names anymore but the first 3 are a lot considering Ramirez isn’t that far from free agency. Waters is a power hitter and Pache looks like a lock to win the platinum glove for years. Catchers of the future like Contreras are also really hard to find right now. Shewmake still has his entire contract left and Newcomb and Touissaint are both cheap arms who could have some upside.

The only fit on the White Sox would be because of Freddie Freeman’s left-handed bat. The White Sox already have 1B Jose Abreu locked in for 2022 and will likely extend him so he can finish his career with the only MLB organization he has known. The White Sox also have Andrew Vaughn set as the heir apparent to Abreu at 1B with the pair also sharing DH duty. Vaughn will also be getting some reps at a corner outfield spot until the team settles on its core LF and RF from among a host of long term options that include Eloy Jimenez, Yoelqui Cespedes and soon to be signed Cuban Oscar Colas. Gavin Sheets would also figure in the 1B, DH and OF mix.
The only way I see Freeman signing with the White Sox would be a scenario where Vaughn was used in a trade this offseason to acquire their future core second baseman, perhaps as a centerpiece in a Ketel Marte deal with the Diamondbacks.
Aaron Sapoznik
Btw: I voted for the Yankees in this poll.
Dodger Dog
Not extending Abreu is a very easy solution to this.
Aaron Sapoznik
Jose Abreu is the heir apparent ‘Mr. White Sox’ to fellow Cuban HOF’er Minnie Minoso. He’s one of the two current franchise faces along with SS Tim Anderson. Abreu is a fan favorite and his biggest one also happens to be owner Jerry Reinsdorf. I suspect Abreu’s next contract will be his last and it will keep him on the southside of Chicago until he retires, after which he will remain in the organization in some capacity, be it a front office role akin to Jim Thome’s and/or as their international ambassador like Minoso.
Even in the event that Abreu departs, the White Sox still have a host of solid internal candidates to fill the role of first baseman that includes Andrew Vaughn, Gavin Sheets, Jake Burger and perhaps even 6-4, 240lb Eloy Jimenez should he continue to find ways of missing games due to his misadventures out in LF.
The White Sox also have 33-year old starting catcher Yasmani Grandal under contract through 2023. They could use his high OPS switch-hitting bat in the lineup at 1B and DH aside from the typical 100-120 game workload he figures to get behind the dish over the next two seasons.
Cosmo2
They could sign Freeman and worry about Vaughn if and when he fulfills his promise, creating a good problem to have.
Aaron Sapoznik
If the White Sox are compelled to find a lefty bat for their lineup in 2022 and beyond a trade for 2B Jeff McNeil might be the most sensible move. There are also a couple of much cheaper FA options available than Freddie Freeman in corner outfielders Kyle Schwarber and Michael Conforto.
If White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf has $150-200MM dollars burning a hole in his pocket this offseason for a FA like Freeman it would make a lot more sense for his front office to pursue a versatile bat like Kris Bryant who can play all 3 OF spots, 3B and 1B. The White Sox would also be better served spending significantly less, perhaps $120-140MM on SS Trevor Story to fill their 2B hole. Many pundits feel that the keystone is where Story will likely finish his MLB career anyway with his diminished throwing arm.
Finally, it the White Sox are actually inclined to ink a high OBP/OPS lefty bat to play 1B why not pursue former Cubs Anthony Rizzo for a fraction of Freeman’s cost. The added benefit of this deal would be to corner the Chicago Buona Beef market with both Rizzo and Frank Thomas sporting White Sox unis in their ads!

There will be a platoon cycle of Lux, Taylor, and Pollock. The two righties have different strengths, Taylor IMO is better at hitting breaking balls and Pollock is better on fastballs. The majority did not vote for the Dodgers, the plurality currently voted for Yankees, but onto Muncy. Muncy would slot over as he has been fairly flexible in his infield positioning. Turner is older and has been a little banged up the past couple years, so basically like the Dodgers have been doing for years they would just take it on a game to game basis and rotate out a player for rest at least once every 5 games. 80% of a 162 game season is ~130 games, something of which everyone can agree not all players will do. Muncy, Taylor/Trea, Lux, Turner, Freeman easily could though and then filter in the OF with Betts, Bellinger, Taylor/Trea, Pollock. These are fairly broad numbers, but it’s easy to see the fit with Freeman once you understand the rotation of players.

I couldn’t vote in this poll. I just don’t see him leaving Atlanta. The Braves will make it happen.I think if he truly wanted to leave it would easily have happened before the lockout everyone knew was coming.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
I agree with you. If he can get 5/150 from Atlanta or 6/192 from another team, that is the biggest spread that I can imagine. I think Freeman returns to Atlanta.
RunDMC
I’ve been 60/40 that he returns to ATL since they won the WS, but I now see it as 40/60 he returns. I still can’t shake the TOR/LAA being landing spots, despite the inconvenient fits. Would be crazy to move Vlad Jr. off of 1B, but would someone like Freeman being the power move TOR needs to make to stake a claim in the AL East, as their young studs fully mature?
deweybelongsinthehall
A bird in the hand is worth more than two in the bush (whatever that saying is). He will sign to remain Atlanta which is where he belongs. If he chooses to leave, Boston is the perfect fit. He’s the one guy who can make a championship difference in 22 and depending on the new CBA, he’s the first big move of the year for Boston or New York. injuries happen worry about roster configuration later.
Dorothy_Mantooth
By signing Freeman, Boston would be saying goodbye to either Xander or Devers as they wouldn’t have the money to re-sign both. I believe Tristan Casas is the closest thing they’ve had to a ‘can’t miss’ prospect since Betts so I’d be shocked if Boston made a legitimate play for Freeman. The Yankees seem like a more realistic destination than Boston to me. I also wouldn’t be excited paying Freeman $30M for his age 36-38 seasons. His bat speed is bound to slow down as he ages. It wouldn’t surprise me if Colorado makes him the highest offer either. They tend to zig when they should zag and the owner is delusional enough to believe they can be a playoff team sooner than later. But if I had to guess, Atlanta wins the standoff and re-signs him for 6/$150 or 5/$140 with a $20M 6th year option and a $5M+ buyout on that option. I struggle to see Freeman getting the full 6/$180M at his age from anyone.
Dodger Dog
Boston absolutely has the money to sign all three of those guys. Their ownership just chooses not to.
BeforeMcCourt
Boston doesn’t have money for stars? Are you drunk?
Dorothy_Mantooth
Of course Boston has the money to pay Freeman but even the highest revenue team (the Dodgers) have a budget they won’t exceed. We’ve seen that this offseason already as they let Seager and Scherzer walk along with another potential 3-4 contributors to their championship team. If Boston signed Freeman @ $30M/yr and extended both Xander and Devers at market rates, they would be on the hook to pay (4) players $30M+ apiece. Tying up $120M+ on 4 players for the next 3-5 seasons (Sale, Xander, Devers and Freeman) is not a recipe for success when they need to pay another 24-25 players to field a full, competitive major league team. They wouldn’t have the payroll capacity to add the Eovaldi’s, Rodon’s, Jansen’s of the league to round out their roster. They’d have to rely on a lot of pre-Arb players and try to find the next Kiki deal in order to match the quality of the other teams in the league and more importantly, the quality in their own division. Rounding out the pitching staff would be the hardest for them as solid #2’s cost close to $20M per year.
The Sox are on the right track now. They have a nice blend of veterans in their prime, veterans on expiring contracts along with some young talent that has either already broken in or will do so this season. Bloom should continue to work around the margins and find good short term deals that even if they go over the CBT in 2022, the team is not hamstrung for years to come. The Red Sox are in really good shape right now and 2023 will see $60M+ come off their books. If 50% of their major league ready prospects pan out, Boston will be competitive for the next 4-6 seasons. Signing Freeman would put a major dent in their plans to build a long term contender. They need that payroll flexibility and farm depth to add to the team at the deadline when they are in position to win it all. I’d much prefer Boston to stay the course vs. signing a 32-year old player to 6 year, top of the market deal.
deweybelongsinthehall
Everything hinges on the new CBA. Sox ownership took advantage of the many championships this d century to reset financially. They will spend when the pandemic ends if not when their bottom line is affected. Fannies not in seats or eyeballs not on NESN will get them to spend. They just will spend smartly this time. No panda or Hanley type moves. FF being the exception should he leave Atlanta.

I don’t think he’ll leave either. I think he has a 6-year offer on the table already. He’s just waiting for Atlanta to match it basically. They knew there’d be a lockout so for all we know, Atlanta told him let us see where we’re at after the lockout ends and Freeman agreed. At least until whichever team that gave him the offer says now or never cuz we gotta move on to other business. Which could come right after business starts up again. In fact, if I’m right, Freeman may be one of the first big FA’s to sign after the lockout. But it’ll probably be with Atlanta. Essentially, they did each other a solid…..The Braves gave Freeman time to see what’s out there & Freeman gave Atlanta time to see where their finances are at after the new CBA. They’ll give him the 6th year when all is said & done.

They should just pivot to Story on a shorter (3 year) high AAV, get a SP (Rodon?) and Olson or Freeman. That would be huge for their performance on both sides and allow for their prospects to come up without being rushed. Bring up Cabrera as a utility IFer.

I hate to say it but I think he ends up with the yankees. Voit is in no way, shape or form a roadblock to signing Freddie. He would improve the defense all around the infield, give them the patient lefthanded bat they don’t have and you could easily move Voit for an OF to fill a spot there. Them doing nothing before the lockout makes me think they were wanting to see the new CBA before making a big plunge. Maybe not, I’ve heard some yankee fans say that they won’t be spending that way any more.

Kimbrel will be moved. However the White Sox will probably target 2nd base, a back end starter, and or an outfielder. They already have two first basemen in Abreu and Sheets with Vaughn able to cover there too. Don’t expect a blockbuster contract from Reinsdorf. Another deadline deal if in the hunt – yes.

I see a Kimbrel deal with the Mets in some aspect. Probably moving McNeil in exchange for Kimbrel and cash. Depends what impression McNeil makes on Buck.
BartoloHRball
Zero chance they move McNeil (controllable and cheap, 3 WAR) for Kimbrel bc he slumped worse than McNeil and he is expensive. I’d bet on the position players to bounce back better. Rarely so you trade an everyday player who can play 4-5 positions for an expensive reliever who’s numbers tanked in recent years.
Dorothy_Mantooth
I see the White Sox moving Kimbrel to Boston for Matt Barnes. It would give Chicago about $7M of payroll relief this season and give them one of best late inning bullpens in all of baseball with Barnes, Graveman & Hendriks for the 7th, 8th & 9th innings. Barnes definitely ran out of gas in August but he was one of the most dominant relievers in baseball from April-July. Between the shortened 2020 season and the overuse of Barnes early on in 2021, it didn’t surprise me that Barnes was on empty to finish the year. Chicago has the bullpen depth to protect Barnes from overuse and make sure he remains fresh in September and October. It’s a trade that makes a lot of sense for both teams.
MLB Top 100 Commenter

If I’m the Yankees I overpay for Freeman but keep the contract at 5 years. DJ stays at 2nd, Gleyber to LF.
Now you have Gallo, Voit, the typical suspects (all those out of place pieces/failed prospects) and the Yankee checkbook to find a stopgap SS, C and a glove first CF to play the 95% of the season since 5% is all Hicks can be counted on for.
Let the young pitching get a crack and see if they can develop into something. This is a transitional year, they will not be going all in by any accord. This is not the front office of old that is insulted by the idea of finishing anything but first.
Look at that I didn’t even need PhD in Indonesian Anthropology from an Ivy League college to figure out a game plan for the front office.
Dorothy_Mantooth
The Yankees number one priority is catcher, followed by SS. I believe the Yankees put together a strong trade package for Wilson Contreras. This way, they can keep Voit & Sanchez for 1st base / DH / bench bat reps. While Freeman would look great in pinstripes, 1st base is just not a major position of need for NY if they can address the catcher position. If they can’t get a catcher this offseason then maybe a shorter term deal for Rizzo makes more sense for them than Freeman. SS is a close second to catcher for NY so if they are going to spend, C or SS makes more sense than first base to me.
Spare Tire Dixon
I think he stays in Atlanta, honestly. If I’m the Dodgers, Yankees, etc. I would be pushing hard to trade for Matt Olson, who is cheaper (for now) and younger. Freddie is incredible, but Olson presents more flexibility in the long run for most teams
Dorothy_Mantooth
The issue with Olson is that he is going to cost (2) top 5-10 prospects and another young, promising MLB pitcher or player as well. With all the talent they have traded away recently, the Dodgers or Yankees may be hesitant to do so. The only way they make this move is if Olson agrees to a long term extension as part of the deal. He has two seasons of control left, but if they are forced to part with that much young talent, it would seem they would want to ensure they have him wrapped up for the next 8+ seasons.
stymeedone
Not sure of this, but I thought MLB eliminated negotiation periods before completing trades. Last time I remember it happening was the ARod to Boston fiasco, which the MLBPA overturned. Has there been one that happened, since?
Dorothy_Mantooth
Honestly, I’m not sure but if they did indeed pass that rule, there still had to be a way to at least discuss the terms of an acceptable extension if not come to a non-binding verbal agreement on an extension prior to completing the trade. This is basically what the Dodgers did with Mookie Betts. They traded for him in Jan or Feb and then signed him to a 12 year extension before he played a single game for them. I’m willing to bet those terms were discussed and informally agreed to prior to completing the trade as they would not have given up Verdugo, Downs and agreed to pay 50% of the remaining ~$100M on Price’s contract without some certainty that Betts would agree to their extension offer.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Olson would be perfect for the Dodgers and I think now is the time for them to use several top prospects as currency. But yes, they need to assess his willingness to be extended.

This ridiculous lockout needs to end. I obviously want Freeman back in Atlanta but I would like to know the answer one way or the other.
Yanks2
He’s not going to the Yankees (if he doesn’t sign with Atlanta). Cashman won’t pay him the money he wants. Yankees have majority just one dimensional players. They’ll wind up signing declining Rizzo to a 2 year 30m deal because it’s the cheap way out. They’ll miss out on Olson too.
Zonedeads
Your comment is ridiculous. A team that just spent 300+ million on one player last year is all of the sudden a team that takes the “cheap way out”
RunDMC
Good reason why they’re going the “cheap way out”, especially if they’re looking at an imminent Judge decision.

It seems that was the one that took them to the brink. Sign Freeman and wave goodbye to Judge. Can’t have every player at $30MM per, even if you’re the Yankees or Dodgers.

It could be a pipe dream, but realistically, Toronto has the payroll flexibility to land both, Bryant and Freeman and just go with in-house option Pearson as the 5ft starter or trade for one. Maybe the Sox also accept a straight up Kimberly for Grichuk trade but if they don’t, Romano has done a great job there.

Guys like Groshans and Moreno are likely to make the jump in 2022. So maybe the Jays could turn Groshans into a CF or trade him for a SP. Teoscar could also be traded away to Cleveland for a SP or perhaps land Ramirez if they only decide to sign Bryant/Freeman/or neither one. I would assume they sign Bryant and his versatility and leave Freeman along to keep the DH open and let Vlad Jr. handle 1B.

Dorothy_Mantooth
If the Bluejays were to sign both Bryant and Freeman, they wouldn’t have the money to lock up their young stars down the road (Vlad, Bichette, Manoah, etc.). To me, Toronto currently has enough offensive firepower to compete with any team in baseball. If Toronto is looking to spend more money, it should be used to improve their bullpen or their starting rotation. Since most of the elite FA starters have already signed, Toronto might have to pivot to the trade market to add a starter but they still have plenty of talent in the minors to make that happen. They could trade one of their better catching prospects, Pearson & another well thought of prospect/player for a solid #2 or #3 with a proven track record. The Bluejays may wait to see if Biggio can rebound this year before going all in for another IF, but if they are hesitant to do so, a FA deal with Story or Bryant would make sense. I don’t see them adding multiple, offensive FA’s to the team. A couple of expensive missteps by Toronto could really derail their goal of being perennial contenders for the next 4-5 years so they need to be careful with their spending as they try to round out their club.
to4
Make sense. I would just sign Bryant, trade with the A’s for Montas, Laureano, Olson by sending Pearson, Groshans, Jimenez and one of the better C as the main pieces. Then swing another trade with Cleveland for one of their SP by sending one of the OF and perhaps acquiring Kimbrel for Grichuk straight up as a salary dump as well.

The Astros would N O T trade Gurriel to accommodate Freeman – they would simply move him across the diamond to third and put Bregman at shortstop. You don’t trade away a guy that just won a gold glove and a batting title while making only $8 million a year. Yuli was a third baseman when they signed him. Come on people dig deeper, cross your t‘s, dot you i’s.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Gurriel will turn 38 in June so his playing days are coming to an end. I know Houston loves what Gurriel brings to the table, but a deal for Freeman would be more about the future than just the 2022 season. If Houston (or any other team) knew that Freeman will be able to perform as well as Gurriel has in his late 30’s, he’d have been signed already. It’s still a risky deal for any team but Houston is as good of guess as any non-Atlanta team out there, Gurriel or not.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Except that I think Houston will be spending their money on Correa. Correa to Houston, Freeman to Atlanta, sort of the natural order of things.
jim stem
It doesn’t really matter WHO wants him. Any team bidding fir his services is only driving up the eventual Braves’ winning contract bid.
If no one offers more than four years, Atlanta gets him for 5. If no offers more than five, they get him for 6. If, say, Seattle offers a top non-Atlanta bid of 4/120, Atlanta offers 5/150 and he signs back with the Braves. Whatever the highest AAV per year is, Braves just have to offer one more year at the same AAV. There just isn’t any way he leaves the Braves unless they really screw this up.
Any team on need of 1b can has less expensive free agent options. How many teams can truly add another 30mil/year player on a guaranteed 5+ year contract?
Braves are a perennial contender. They have a great farm system. They are willing to trade for the necessary pieces during the season to win.
Braves will end up giving Freddie some kind of deal that will guarantee him a roster spot for 6 years and pay him very well deferred over 10 years.

Sorry, didn’t proof read.

Honestly, that would be a win for most NL teams, too – drive up the Braves’ price, limit the Braves’ options.

Based on your theory, the Dodgers should offer 6 years at 160 million
$30 million per year for years 1-5, and a player option for year 6 at $10 million.
The more the Braves have to pay the better for the Dodgers and everyone else. And if Freeman wound up signing with them, it would help the first four years enough that they could live with him as a part-time DH in years 5-6.

I love Freeman, but have never felt like there was a market for him at 6/180. I just don’t think anyone is going to get there. Nor do the Braves need to extend that far to re-sign him.
❤️ MuteButton
I don’t see the logic behind a lot of the contracts that are being handed out right now though. I’m an Astros fan, and obviously lots of teams would love to have him. At the same time, I’d hate to see Atlanta lose an icon.
CNichols
The 6Y/200M and 5Y/135M are just negotiating numbers being thrown out by the two sides. The 6Y/180M projection kinda sits in between the two public numbers so while it seems high, it’s probably not terribly unrealistic in my view.
It seems like a huge difference, but when you’re looking at the current numbers that each side has thrown out there, it’s really just 1 extra year and an AAV of $33.3M in Freeman’s ask as opposed to an AAV of $27M and a year less in the Braves offer, that separates the two sides.
If you split the difference on the AAV to $30M and give him the 6th year, that’s right on the projection.
NickL 3
“DH is the ideal spot for Brandon Belt”. Why? He’s one of the Giants best defenders, and one of the best defensive first basemen in baseball and none of his injuries have been caused on defense.
Tim Dierkes
That’s fair, but I do think DHing generally reduces injury risk, and he’s injury-prone.
JoeBrady
I don’t think anyone but Atlanta will seriously bid on his services. The only team with some money, and an opening, is probably the Yankees, but they have other needs to consider, and are already over the cap.
The minimum years, outside of a crazy AAV, would be 6 years, if a team wants to outbid the Braves. The era of 37 year old 1B/DH players is likely in the past.
But given that I had to choose a team, I chose SD. It just felt like a Preller move. He’ll count on being to move Hosmer, and like everything else, it’ll blow up when he realizes that he has no leverage.
BeforeMcCourt
So no one will seriously bid on Freeman, but you choose the team that has not one but two high priced veterans in the way? Hahaha okay Joe
JoeBrady
That’s why I said it’s a Preller move. He had 4 2Bs on the roster last year, so why can’t he have 3 1Bs?
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Because after finishing just 6 games ahead of the Rockies, Preller is now going to have both ownership and a new field manager more involved in such decisions.
Dustyslambchops23
In order for most of these teams to be interested his price needs to fall. If it falls the advantage goes back to the braves, no team should want to overpay in year for a 32 year old first baseman.
HalosHeavenJJ
Never underestimate the likelihood of Arte signing a guy we don’t really need. OC native, MVP, does lots of charity work. That’s Arte’s type of guy.
That said, I’ll take the Mariners in this case. There’s a job opening, payroll flexibility, and I think having a guy like Freeman around as you bring up a young core is a great thing. Plus he can visit his OC home/family a few times per year on road trips and play in the Cactus League where his family and friends can see him.
LordD99
I doubt the Yankees are trying to pry Freeman away from Atlanta, although I’m sure they checked in to kick the tires. They didn’t even make an offer on a SS, which they need. I don’t see them putting big money into a 1B‘man.

samthebravesfan
Liberty Mefia doesn’t care. They really don’t. It’s all up to Terry McGuirk.p
stymeedone
Liberty Media, like most teams, has a budget. I would not say that offering to pay Freeman 27MM per, as a 1B, is an insult. Cron gives good bang for the buck for $8MM, and while Freeman is better, I question it being $19MM better. Sign Rizzo to a 2 yr, and spend the money elsewhere.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Put Freddie in Coors and you will see how much better he is than Cron. Just sayin’.
To me, Cron is neither high nor low at $8 million for 2022. Freddie is a 32-33 million player for 2022.
The issue is how much should the AAV go down if the number of years is 6 or more. I have no doubt Atlanta would pony up 5/150 for Freeman. He is popular with the fan base and he will probably continue to produce at a high level for 3-4 more years.
hersch
Not worth $20 M per season never mind $33 M per till the age of 38 that he wants. The only team that will give him that is Atlanta if AA is forced by ownership to do it. And Atlanta doesn’t have that type of ownership. So he’ll have to take less from someone else. And depending on how much they give him they could end up regretting it.
samthebravesfan
Anyone that wants to give him big money, great. He’s the best first baseman in Braves history and has a World Series. He can do whatever he wants now.

Dodgers or Yankees. Great fit for the Yanks with the short RF porch and ability to trade Voight. Dodgers as well, with Lux and Muncey being the casualties, though solid bench players.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
If Muncy regains his health he is no bench player, he plays 2B and 3B just fine. And Justin Turner is better suited to be a DH at this point in his career. The only issue for the Dodgers is the amount of money and the length of the contract, not fitting him into the lineup. Trading top prospects for Olson makes more sense for the Dodgers. Atlanta is the natural place for Freeman to end up.

I picked the Padres….adding Freeman would give San Diego one hell of an infield. Tatis Jr, Machado, and Freeman in the middle of your lineup? It will compensate some for how their pitching fell apart because of injuries last year. The Giants are not as good as they played last year and San Diego is not as bad as they finished.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
I think every team is as good or as bad as their actual record. But it is fair to say that the Padres injuries to starting pitchers is partly poor acquisition decision-making and partly bad luck. But the Padres are not going to add that much to their payroll. They might be able to unload Wil Myers but Hosmer is not going anywhere unless the Padres pay 75% of his contract or, worse yet, throw in CJ Abrams. That won’t happen and Freeman won’t be a Brave. The Padres would sooner trade Abrams, Hassell, Gore and Lange, for Olson, Manea and Bassitt. And the As but not the Padres would ok that deal.
stymeedone
There’s a big difference between needing a 1B, and having $30MM+ per year to spend on the easiest position to fill on the diamond (unless you’re the Yankees). Just move Sanchez to 1B and see if he’s worth $8MM there. C are cheaper.

There’s no way the Dodgers would agree to a 6 year contract with a 32 year old. Check them off the list.
NashvilleJeff
leftcoaster: In their 12 year deal, LA has Betts signed through age 39. From age 32 – 39 he’ll earn 350 mill in salary (including the 5 mill per year signing bonuses.) So they actually already HAVE “agreed to a 6 year contract with a 32 year old.” They’ve even got Mookie for a 7th year that takes him to age 39. That 350 mill that Mookie will “earn” is approximately twice as much as Freeman is reportedly seeking (if his demands for 6 @180 mill are accurate) for the same age/time period that Betts is under contract (not quite because 32.5 mill is due Betts for his age 39 season). I’m a Braves fan, btw, so I’m not an LA homer trying to justify a Dodger signing of FF. Just refuting your “logic” that LA should be “crossed off the list.”
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Plus Atlanta has the toughest post-season competition for the Dodgers the last two years, you are not just improving the Dodgers in 2022, you are also making the Braves weaker. Especially if most of the free agents have signed by the time the Dodgers sign Freeman.
But I put the percentage at 90% that Freeman re-signs with the Atlanta and about 2% that he signs with the Dodgers. By the way, that does make the Dodgers the team I see second most likely to sign Freeman.

Why would he want to be known as Phreddie Phreeman when Freddie Freeman has already made a name for himself?
Tomahawk Takeover
The answer is very simple. He’s a Braves lifer. There’s your article.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Freddie Freeman decided 8 years ago to take the money (8/$135M) rather than bet on himself and become a free agent in his late 20’s. You certainly can’t fault him for doing so, but after seeing what these younger free agents who waited through arbitration are getting paid, it seems like Freddie asking for $30M over 6 years at age 32 is his way of trying to recoup some of the money he ‘lost’ by signing a long term extension during his arbitration years. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. He really should get Goldschmidt money (maybe $2M more per year) but he’s digging his heels in on that 6 year term and large AAV too. Good for him if he gets it but I don’t see it happening. $135M is a huge amount of money, but you’d have to say that the Braves ‘won’ on that early contract extension.
I foresee a similar approach coming from Wander Franco when his mega-contract extension expires. He going to see Soto get close to $500M as a free agent and he’s going to want a piece of that pie too when his deal is up. It’s just not going to happen. He locked in life changing money at age 20. He too will be a free agent at age 32 and won’t be able to match the other mega-salaries signed between now and then. I can’t blame either Freddie or Wander for locking in a 9 figure deal at such a young age. For the few that end up having this work against them (Acuna, Albies, Freeman etc.) there are countless Nomar Garciaparra stories of players who turned down this life changing money early on, only to see them get hurt or tail off and they never came close to matching those original offers again. Freddie should feel blessed that he’s still going strong at age 32, but he also needs to set the proper expectations for his next contract given his age and his earlier decision to lock in on an 8 year deal prior to becoming a free agent.
NashvilleJeff
Agree with you that the “Braves “won” on that early contract extension”, but at the time the Braves and FF agreed on that deal, it made him the highest paid 1Bman ever at that point/age in an MLB career. Read that recently, so I could be mistaken—-but I don’t think so. Think the source was Talking Chop, iirc.
dsett75
As I’ve said for weeks now, I think Freeman already has a 6-year offer on the table. He’s just giving Atlanta the respect by waiting for them to offer the 6th year because it’s home to him. So he’s going to give them every chance, at least until some team threatens to pull their offer off the table. I think that’ll be when Freeman finally gives Atlanta the now or never ultimatum. So, I STILL think he’ll resign with the Braves. I picked San Francisco in the poll. Them, Milwaukee & the Cubs would be heavily improved with him. He’d look great in a Tigers uniform too & as a Tigers fan, I’d absolutely love it, but there’s no way Detroit is signing him even if he was determined to leave Atlanta.
Dorothy_Mantooth
He may very well have received a 6 year offer from someone but I doubt it was for the full $180M he is seeking. 6/$150M feels like the absolute ceiling for him, with $30M-$35M per year over the first couple of years and then declining salaries as the deal (and Freddie) ages. I’ll be shocked if he’s able to find the full 6/$180M he’s looking for at age 32.
dsett75
Dorothy, if Castellanos gets the ridiculous 7 that he’s asking for, then teams should be lining up to give FF 6, imho.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Not disputing he could get the 6 year term from Atlanta or another team but I highly doubt he gets $30M per year over the full 6 years. I equate it to the DJ LeMahieu deal. He too wanted 6 years from the Yankees (and got it) but he had to settle on a lower AAV to get that 6 year term.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Marcus Semien got 7 years, $175 million. Freeman is one year older at a less demanding defensive position, although he plays it really well. Over the past three years, the pair have hit, cumulatively, roughly the same number of homers but Freeman hits for a much higher average and has a much longer track record of success. So I could see a team offer 6 or even 7 years for Freeman. To me, Freeman is worth $30 million per year in years 1-5 and $10 million per year for year 6, and $5 million for year 7. So I would be ok with offering 5 years/$150 million, with a player option of $10 million for year 6, and a player option of $5 million for year 7.

Freeman is as good on defense as Belt if not better. If you get great defense either way, you move the player with health issues to DH. It’s just common sense.

But its not how Hal Steinbrenner would.
I don’t see the Yankees signing either Freeman or Correa, let alone both. These Yankees are not likely to carry four $30+ million per year salaries when they are so worried about staying below the luxury tax.
AlienBob
My gut tells me Freeman would do more to boost the Mariners offense than any of the other alternatives. SD, LAD, NYY and SFG all have pretty good offensive lineups now. Freeman would certainly help these teams but doesn’t have the impact of replacing the 40 HR’s the M’s lost by Kyle Seager’s departure. Freeman would also bring veteran leadership to a rather young Mariners team. Still, I think it unlikely he goes to Seattle. Certainly, Dipoto and his staff are so tight lipped we will not know it is being considered until after it happens.

Honestly I don’t see why he would want to leave Atlanta if they’re offering him at least $150 million. That’s still a great contract and the Braves are in contention every year now. Plus, he could be the Chipper Jones of this generation by staying with Atlanta for his entire career…and he has a chance to surpass Jones in World Series titles in this city.

The only reasons I could see him leaving are:
1. a blow out offer from another club ATL will not match or
2. he wants to be closer to his off season home in LA..

Thoughts on this kind of deal? It might be an overpay but that might be what it takes…
Seven years/$190 million
Years 1-5: $30 million per year
Years 6-7: $20 million per year

Despite their recent success the M’s haven’t made the playoffs in 20 years. Freeman wants to play for a winner. He would need to be convinced they could get there. So, if the M’s sign Seiya Suzuki and they sign a good SP2 to pair with Robbie Ray, then maybe he sees himself as the last piece of a championship team. He is already on a championship team. So the offer would have to push him to change teams especially if we are talking about the Mariners as the landing spot. I could see 6/$180 if Atlanta will not go there.

I’m a Braves fan who hopes Freeman takes a hike & I’m not alone.

I want whatever is best for the team’s chances to win another World Series. Freeman would definitely take up a lot of payroll and he’s on the wrong side of 30 but Atlanta has no legitimate first base prospects and trading for Olson would likely require an overpay in prospects and then he would be a free agent after only a couple of years.
