Latest On Michael Conforto’s Market

By Mark Polishuk | March 11, 2022 at 4:10pm CDT

4:10PM: Conforto is “not a top priority” for the Rockies, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports, though the club has some level of interest.

1:52PM: Michael Conforto’s market continues to grow, as the Diamondbacks “were among the teams showing the most interest in Conforto before the lockout,” The New York Post’s Mike Puma writes.  The Marlins had also been previously linked to Conforto, and Joe Frisaro of Man On Second tweets that Conforto remains on Miami’s list of outfield targets.

Such clubs as the Padres, Rockies, and Yankees have also been reported as suitors for Conforto’s services, with his market thus far representing an interesting cross-section of contenders and teams who struggled in 2021.  The D’Backs are coming off a 110-loss season, while the Marlins followed up an appearance in the expanded 2020 playoff bracket with a 95-loss campaign last year.

This wide range of interested clubs could reflect Conforto’s status coming off a subpar (by his standards) .232/.344/.384 season over 479 plate appearances with the Mets.  While Conforto rejected the Mets’ qualifying offer, speculation persists that Conforto might look for a shorter-term contract that would allow him to re-test free agency next winter.  Since Conforto surely feels he’ll hit better in 2022, he naturally wouldn’t want to short-change himself by signing a longer-term contract now that is reflective of his 2021 numbers.

Even if Conforto is “looking for big free agent pay day,” as Frisaro puts it, he could still land a healthy salary on a one-year deal, which opens the door for many teams as possible fits.  Clubs that may be wary of a longer-term commitment to Conforto (or not keen on longer-term commitments in general) could certainly be more open to a one-year arrangement, since a Conforto that returns to his 2015-20 form is a major addition to any lineup.

Though Arizona would seemingly be closer to a rebuild than a true push for contention next season, the D’Backs haven’t been willing to entirely blow things up, as the team still has some interesting core pieces as well as some younger players hoped to be on the verge of a breakout.  To this end, the Snakes signed Mark Melancon to a two-year, $14MM deal prior to the lockout, and president/CEO Derrick Hall said yesterday that the Diamondbacks were looking to add some offense.

Hall said he “could easily” see a scenario where Arizona spends $17MM to push the projected 2022 payroll up to the $110MM range.  Since Conforto would certainly want to at least top the cost of the qualifying offer ($18.4MM) on any one-year deal, he’d cost more than $17MM, thus putting him at the high end of the Diamondbacks’ possible spending range.  Plus, if that hypothetical $17MM represents all the front office would have to spend on remaining needs, it is quite possible the D’Backs would prefer to spread that money around to several players rather than splurge on Conforto alone.

Conforto’s rejection of the QO could represent an obstacle for both the Diamondbacks and the Marlins, as either team would have to give up their third-highest pick in the 2022 draft as compensation for signing the outfielder.  Surrendering such a notable pick for what might be a short-term deal is a hefty price to pay for an Arizona team that isn’t really in position to contend in 2022.

Likewise, the Marlins had also been wary about QO free agents when making their winter moves, but Miami has been more clear about its intent to challenge for a postseason berth next season.  The Marlins have already signed Avisail Garcia and traded for both Jacob Stallings and Joey Wendle, and the Fish have also been reportedly chasing such big-ticket trade candidates as the Pirates’ Bryan Reynolds.

Just how much more the Marlins are willing to spend on upgrades, however, is still an unknown.  Derek Jeter’s surprising departure as the team’s CEO was (according to some accounts) due to a change in ownership’s approach to spending heading into the 2022 campaign.  Prior to the lockout, the Jeter-led Marlins were in talks with Nick Castellanos on a contract of longer than five years, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (Twitter link), though only time will tell if such major expenditures are still on the Marlins’ radar now that the lockout is over.

Naturally, the Marlins can still improve their team without spending a ton of money — the Stallings and Wendle trades are evidence of that, and Miami has a lot of young pitching depth that could bring back a cost-controlled talent like Reynolds in a further swap.  Conforto might also represent an interesting middle ground for the team, if he was indeed open to only a one-year contract.  Miami could take the one-year payroll boost to add Conforto, look to benefit from a possible rebound year from the former All-Star, and then watch him depart in free agency next winter.

While these aren’t contenders by any means, both teams will finish ahead of the Mets.

The Marlins won 67 games and were 28 games under .500 last year. Even with 12 teams making the playoff this year, that’s still going to be a tall order.

Do you really think we’re going to blow as many late inning leads as we did last season? The Marlins moved all of the culprits except for Bass. And they mostly stopped using Bass in anything that wasn’t a mop up situation.

We get a legit Closer, and the Marlins season record can easily flip from last year. to make them a 6 or even 5th seeded team. Just Bass’ failures alone affected the difference in the NL East standings between the Mets and Marlins. Just head to head he handed four wins for us to you guys. That’s an 8-game turnaround right there, before we look at the multitudes of games he took away from the Marlins to hand over to many other teams.

But go ahead and doubt this so you can act surprised if you see a distinct record turnaround. You Mets fans will be the only one surprised by it since you’re all in denial of what happened with the Marlins last year.

No way…Atlanta wins the division again….Philly, SD, LA/ San Francisco, and St. Louis will battle for the 3 wild card spots….Milwaukee Atlanta and either LA/ San Fran will win the divisions in the NL…

Just pure Mets hatred. Mets finished 10 games ahead of the Marlins and 25 games ahead of the DBacks last year. But sure, they’ll both make up that gap. Makes perfect sense. You should definitely keep trashing the Mets on every article instead of getting a life.

With regard to the Marlins, it’s not Mets hatred. Do you really want to deny the difference that Anthony Bass and some of the other bullpen disasters who are no longer with the Marlins made in the standings last year?

You and I know that, head to head, Anthony Bass took four wins away from the Marlins and handed them to the Mets last season. That’s an 8-game differential right there. And that’s before we count the other games Bass took away from the Marlins and handed to other teams. That 10-game differential is not as big as you’re making it out to be when you factor the facts you’re trying to pretend didn’t happen.

So the Marlins will correct their bullpen problems from last year, but the Mets can’t correct any of their problems? They won’t get a bounce back performance from any of their incumbent hitters? They can’t have a healthy season from deGrom? And Scherzer doesn’t add to the differential you so confidently speak of?

          Got it.

Your disdain for the Mets blinds you from a perspective other than your own desired outcome. The Marlins certainly have a promising starting pitching staff and a few nice pieces in the field. But let’s not pretend they’re a couple bullpen arms away from competing this year.

speculation persists that Conforto might look for a shorter-term contract that would allow him to re-test free agency next winter.
    =========================================
    That doesn’t make sense.

He looks like a very difficult signing for one year. I doubt anyone is giving up drafts pick(s) for him, for just one year of service. If a one-year re-test contract was his intention, then he should’ve taken the QO.

FWIW, I’d like him, a little, for the RS, But more along the lines of $45M/3.

This is right. Makes no sense to give up a pick to sign him for one year. unless he came incredibly cheaply, and that’s not going to happen, if there really is demand out there. Maybe he can manage a 3 year deal with an opt-out after 2, but I can’t see one. Which makes it weird that he didn’t take the $18.4

        No
Where it landed is that if the international draft is adopted it would be for next off season… If it isn’t the QO system sticks for the rest of the cba
This off-season will proceed w existing QO rules so signing a QO FA costs the pick for signing team still

Michael Conforto is going to cost any team more than he’s worth. He’s just too inconsistent. And I can’t imagine him taking less than 3 years (from a team’s POV, since they’re giving up a pick), with opt outs maybe after seasons 1 and/or 2. That’s too much for my liking as a Mets fan. I wish him well, I just think he’s stuck in this weird contract category where he’s due for far more money than teams are comfortable going for him. He needs 2022 to be a prove it year, but he turned down the QO… luckily for the Mets IMO.

Prior to the lockout, basically everyone in the White Sox fanbase just assumed Conforto was headed to the south side. People were already splitting into pro-Conforto factions (praising the “move”0 and anti-Conforto factions (criticizing the “move” but admitting its inevitability). I’m the the latter camp myself and would be glad to see him go elsewhere. His 2021 season is just too scary at too large of a sample size.

So how are you making such an outlandish connection other than a little wishful thinking mixed with a lot of disdain (and probably crack). We all want to know. Puff puff give.

I personally don’t care to have Conforto. To me, he can be matched for far less. He’s been nothing but a decent power hitting LH bat who has been overrated by the NY media. I prefer going in another direction. He’s not worth much above what we paid for Avisail Garcia. For the potential price, I prefer Eddie Rosario. More or less the same player, for significantly less money.
