Red Sox Announce Several Roster Moves

By Mark Polishuk | May 28, 2022 at 9:15am CDT

The Red Sox announced a set of roster moves prior to their doubleheader with the Orioles today, and as expected, right-hander Josh Winckowski was added to the roster as the 27th man.  Winckowski is slated to make his Major League debut when he starts the second game of the doubleheader.  In other moves, Hansel Robles was placed on the 15-day injured list, and Hirokazu Sawamura was optioned to Triple-A Worcester, while right-handers Ryan Brasier and Phillips Valdez were called up from Triple-A.

Robles is battling back spasms and hasn’t pitched since May 22 (his IL placement is retroactive to the 25th).  In an inconsistent season for the Red Sox bullpen, Robles has emerged as a closer candidate, recording two saves and recording a 2.65 ERA over 17 innings of work.  However, the secondary metrics aren’t impressed with Robles’ work — his strikeout rate is only 16.2%, and Robles has benefited from a .188 BABIP.

Sawamura has a solid 3.60 ERA over 15 innings this year, and his demotion is likely less a reflection of his performance than it is about restocking the bullpen with some fresher arms.  After pitching in three of the last four days, Sawamura will likely get a short breather in Triple-A before being called back up to Boston in a few days’ time.  Brasier (6.28 ERA) and Valdez (6.10) have each struggled at the big league level this year, and will get another chance to turn things around as the Sox continue to look for reliability late in games.

the move the Red Sox should make is to build a replica of the Green Monster outside the stadium to hide that team from view.

The Orioles are still not a good team, but after watching them play the Yankees, I will say they’re a more challenging and competitive team to play than recent editions. They’ve had a difficult schedule to start the year and have played their opponents tough. They’re a team on the rise. Do not assume the win.

Last year the O’s were very competitive against the Sox, sweeping them to start the season and taking 2 of 3 to nearly eliminate the Sox the last week of the season.

        Teams don’t stay horrible forever.

the move the yankees should make is build a hospital outside the stadium so their players have a shorter trip as the injury train starts with them.

Whats that 4 of their top players in the last 4 days? As history has shown, Judge should be joining them soon so that will be pretty their entire offense with stanton there already. Hey you still got Gallo and Hicks though right?

Barnes has over 5 years of service time, so he can not be unconditionally “optioned”. The CBT has taken away that choice. A DL stint is the more clear choice for Barnes under “shoulder impingement”, so he has a week down time then rehads indefinitely in Worcester, Portland, Greenville, or Salem. (My choice would be a very, very long rehab…..maybe two years). Lol

They’re playing a doubleheader today, and frankly, they’re shuffling deck chairs with the righty relievers. I actually don’t think Cora trusts Valdez much. He doesn’t get hi lev looks even when he is pitching well; on the other hand, he’s been left in a few times over the past season to take an absolute beating – two late outings last year destroyed his ERA. He had his longest look and was trusted most in 2020, when Cora wasn’t here, and when alternative relief choices managed to be even worse than they are now.

Joe – With all due respect, why do you insist on bringing up the race card so often? Nothing Milt wrote had anything to do with race, implied or otherwise. Any manager can have “favorites” without it having to do with a shared race or ethnicity.

Mike Timlin was one of Tito’s “boys”, yet their backgrounds included absolutely nothing in common.

I get it, liberals are required to bring up race all the time. It’s in the DNC handbook. But can we please stick to baseball when there’s no evidence of racism?

Cora is a poor manager for many reasons, none of which have anything to do with race.

It’s always the same. Anytime a Latino gets promoted, there are 1-2 guys in here that insist that it is always because the player is Latino. If Milt wants to explain that he meant something different, I will be glad to listen.

But there is clearly no other explanation.

        Bello
        Seabold
        Winckowski (bullpen rather than start)
        Crawford

Joe – agreed. Bloom and Cora have stuck to calling up 40-man roster players now, but by August or September the Red Sox will make room by either DFAs or trades, so they can see which of the AAA guys are likely to make the team next year (and help this year).

I wonder if Vazquez gets extended now that his BA is .303 and OPS .766 at least for a year or two. Wong is hitting around .260 with no extra base power. They really have little catching depth anywhere close to the MLB.

I’d like to see what the trading block looks like. I like Vazquez okay, but i don’t trust players with big contract years. Plus he is already almost 32, and doesn’t look like a gym rat. If he were looking for something like $12M/2, it doesn’t feel like much downside. But he was looking for real money, I’d be looking at someone like Murphy from Oakland. He wouldn’t be cheap, but he has three years left, after this year.

Sending down sawamura is something the league needs to address. Expand the rosters to 28 if teams are going to be playing these games with players. If a player is called up, then leave them.up unless they do poorly. Not just because they need fresh arms.

Joe – That comment about Cora made me laugh really hard, so thank you! Not just because Cora finally realized winning the game is more likely when you leave in the dominant SP instead of automatically going to the pen after 80 pitches, but also because of your constant insistence that no SP should ever face a lineup more than twice.

So facing a lineup more than twice is the right thing to do *only* when Cora decides to do it … love it!

I don’t recall ever saying you automatically go to the pen after facing the lineup twice. But I will be glad to discuss it if you can show me where I said that.

I have said that, imo, 2-3 inning pitchers represent the future. You get the advantage of guys throwing harder for shorter periods of time, coupled with the fact that you can no longer stack a lineup. You can load your lineup with righties, against a guy like Hill, but then the RS could bring in someone like Houck, and negate that advantage for most of the game.

Having said that, I have never, ever believed in absolutes. Had this been a 3-3 game, I’d have had the BP warmed up as soon as the 6th inning. But once we got to the 9th, there is no question I would trust Eovaldi more than our closers.

As a Yankee fan, I apologize for the overly obnoxious behavior of one of us up top. Trash talking is fun on both sides of the rivalry, but no need to take over an entire thread.

You don’t need to apologize for me. Any true Red Sox fan gets it as does any true Yankee fan. You take it and you give it.
They showed no mercy after last year’s Wild card game and we didn’t deserve any mercy, so don’t go patronizing and sucking up to them now.
I didn’t take over the entire thread, Red Sox fans are not posting because it is not fashionable to be one.
Go to any Red Sox game board and you will see the posting has dropped by at least 2/3. One board I hang around use to see 500 to 600 posts during a game, now they are lucky to break 200. When they start winning again, then the fashion fans will all come back acting as if they never left.,.

        When they start winning again,
        ===========================
We are winning. 8-10 to be exact.

Beyond that, the RS are more about their “fans” posting when we are losing, and then disappearing when we start winning. You’ll probably notice a certain contingent that haven’t posted recently.

not what I see. I am talking about the actual game thread.
Beginning of the year it was bustling with Sox fans.
As the season has progressed the drop-off is plainly obvious.
Dont get me wrong, fashionable Yankee fans do the same thing, just saying.
I am still washing out all the salt Sox fans poured into our wound after beating us in the WC, I do believe sporting the best record in baseball that we should rub it in a little bit now, no?
Good times don’t last forever you know.

Or you know some of us have lives. That’s something Yankeesniper clearly doesn’t have.

Any time someone posts as often as he did, I usually suspect an altered state of reality.

Rob – Thank you, I totally agree. Having never seen that username before, he is probably a juvenile newbie.

Many of my favorite regulars here are Yankee fans, they are classy and enjoyable to read. Hopefully this newbie will learn from them.

Winckowski looks pretty good! Not great but maybe after he gets thru the nerves part. What I want to know is who is responsible for letting Denyi Reyes walk?
