MLB Announces 2022 All-Star Reserves

By Mark Polishuk | July 12, 2022 at 1:45pm CDT

July 12: MLB has announced three more additions to the game, with Garrett Cooper of the Marlins. J.D. Martinez of the Red Sox and Carlos Rodon of the Giants stepping in to replace Bryce Harper, Yordan Alvarez and Josh Hader.

July 10: The starting lineups for the 2022 All-Star Game are already known, and we know that Albert Pujols and Miguel Cabrera will be on the rosters as bonus “legend” additions.  Today, Major League Baseball announced the full 33-man rosters for both the National and American Leagues, revealing the other 46 names that will be part of the Midsummer Classic on July 19 at Dodger Stadium.

While the starters were voted in by the fans and Pujols/Cabrera were named to the ASG by the Commissioner’s Office, the rest of the All-Star rosters were determined by a combination of a player ballot and more picks from the league office.  As always, every team is guaranteed at least one representative, though it is worth noting that Pujols and Cabrera wouldn’t count as the only reps for the Cardinals or Tigers, respectively.

Here are the full rosters, though some of the names listed won’t play due to injury, or have declined to participate.  (Any replacements will be named later this week.)  With Bryce Harper missing the game, William Contreras has already been named as the NL’s new designated hitter, so the two Contreras brothers will get to share the honor of being in an All-Star starting lineup.  There is also the unique instance of Shohei Ohtani, who was both selected to the AL starting lineup as a DH, and also named to the All-Star team as a pitcher.

Great so now bona-fide Allstars will miss out on a great opportunity and reward just so every team has a rep. I like the pie wedge system that they are testing in the minor leagues to make these crazy shifts on the field it should make it’s way to the show next year this was pushed to the limit before MLB did anything about it.

Rodon has allowed 11 stolen bases and Mantiply has allowed one. ESPN reported that was the tiebreaking factor.

Trevino finished second to Kirk in voting for the AL behind the plate. Happ, i have no idea since the Cubs already had a rep with Contreras.

This has to be the first time (or at least first time in a long time) that a team’s Catching duo both make the roster, and as reserves no less. Family reunion for the Contreras brothers as well.

I give it til tomorrow if not already the stories of Snitker snubbing Freeman start to surface

Does it, or does it say more about the popularity of the players? Trevino plays with the Yankees, one of the most popular and historic teams in all of professional sports in the world. Wouldn’t be the first time fans stuffed the ballot box to get an undeserving player in but still managed to do so because of the fan base’s size and popularity.

Yeah, remember when Cincinnati fans did just that? But at least their players were worthy of the distinction. I don’t see how, if only the starters are picked by the fans, that Trevino and the others I mentioned were put on the squad—especially when there are so many more deserving.

in 1957, the Cincinnati Times-Star and Burger Beer created prefilled ballots with all Redlegs starters. The newspaper distributed them in the advertisement section while Burger Beer distributed them at every bar.

There was only one non-redleg starter voted in. 1B Stan Musial narrowly defeated CIN 1B George Crowe. Frank Robinson and Ed Bailey were the only players who should’ve been a starter. Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Ernie Banks, Eddie Matthews and Red Schoendienst were better choices. The commissioner added Mays and Aaron.

The fans lost the right to vote until 1970.

This wasn’t even close to the worst decisions by the MLB Commissioners in the 1950s.

Actually I don’t know how Kershaw is on there over Strider. If you want to penalize Strider for the lower innings pitched that’s fine, but he’s pitched the same as Kershaw with relatively close to the same ERA while having the best strikeout rate of any starting pitcher in baseball.

Kershaw is the guy who is out of place. Either go with Rodon and penalize both Kershaw and Strider for fewer IP. Or go with Strider if you want to make an exception for the lower IP

Either way, Kershaw doesn’t belong regardless of the stance you want to take on the lower IP debate.

I’d actually rather bump D’Arnaud than William. He’s been nothing short of amazing with the time they have given him. Definitely deserve on the team. D’Arnaud or Smith I could probably flip a coin between tbh

William actually probably deserves to start. He’s put up just as much production as every other catcher in the conversation while having about half as many ABs as everyone else. It’s crazy

I think Happ in there over Riley is a joke. They’ve got plenty of outfielders and there was no reason to add Happ.

Didn’t hear about him cheating on his wife, but comparing the minor backlash he’s gotten for bat-flipping to the systemic racism that Jackie faced, from seemingly everywhere, is alarmingly out of touch, to put it nicely. He’s a very good player, though, and this is about watching the best players, not the nicest people. Ty Cobb is in the HoF and he was a consummate jackass.

Happy that Happ made it, but I wouldn’t have batted an eye if he didn’t. I vote for the players that I think are All-Stars, and that’s it. Wasn’t even dogging France & Gilbert, just saying, outside of Seattle, it’s not that big a deal. They are not well known players. You could put 50 names down right now who were “snubbed” before.

Forcing every team to be represented will potentially screw a player who is passed over because a lesser player is included from a team that isn’t represented. Teams that have stripped their club of good players because they are rebuilding are likely to have no deserving players. The team of stars Preller has now traded away would be competitive with the Yankees this year. If they needed another Dodger, why is Kershaw there when Urias is having a better year?

Rodon and Kyle Wright got robbed. Castillo belongs but why bother with Helsey when you already have a non-closer reliever in Mantiply? Reward the starters over the set-up guys.

Will Smith makes more sense as the backup catcher than d’Arnaud. Better season and he’s a Dodger. Austin Riley and Josh Bell should be on the team over Happ and Contreras.

Weird selection of Braves. Two of their best four players this season (Riley and Wright, along Swanson and Fried) aren’t in the game while Acuna is, who missed plenty of time.

Ty France not making it is a joke, especially over Stanton and Springer. Logan Gilbert and Dylan Cease deserved it too. More than Cole at least. That Yankees guy over Jonah Heim is stupid too. “Reward the starters over the set up guys.” Why is that? As pitching staffs have grown, starters remain at 5, while the number of set up guys has grown to 5-6 per staff. MLB has made them a more important role. The ASG should acknowledge that. We get the best 2 position players at each position, and the best starters, and best closers. It is increasingly important to showcase the best set up men as well. To that point, Fullmer or Lange were more deserving than Soto to represent the Tigers, as they are near the top setup men, while Soto is currently a middle of the pack closer.

Sorry, but even as a Cubs fan, Nico didn’t deserve it, Tommy Edman is a far greater snub at shortstop. Hate saying it, but it’s true.

This game has gone downhill. Years ago the stars would play most of the game and pitchers would throw three innings. It meant something to the players. Now practically everyone pitches and plays making it a bit of a travesty. The selection process for starters, pitchers and reserves is flawed. The game is not worth watching since it has become meaningless.

It was MUCH worse when the game “meant something.” You had utility guys making the all star game and cost deserving players a spot.

If you watch old all star game film, the pregame and in game announcers talked about which pitchers worked the Sunday before and which pitchers were scheduled to pitch the following Thursday. That factored in which pitchers pitched and how long.

Kind of hilarious Andres Gimenez earned a spot for Cleveland and Mets Fransico Lindor did not (Traded for each other)

I can’t believe anyone beat me to this.

And Rosario also has a 1.7 bWAR this year.

Kershaw shouldn’t be there over Rodon and Pederson definitely shouldn’t be there which makes the fact that he got voted in as a starter ultra stupid. I guess when you get pieced up by Tommy “Strip Club Parking Lot” Pham in front of the world you get the old pity vote for the all star team. Ian Happ sorry but no way. Year after year it’s the same thing guys get snubbed and we all complain about it as we should. I voted but I don’t even watch the game anymore because it’s a BS popularity contest.

Just because the team “is” doesn’t mean the player selected is triple A..

They had 25 man rosters when there were 15 teams now the total teams number is almost double that and they only roster 8 more players!!?? No wonder some players get “missed.”
I will go yell at clouds now…..

Guaranteeing one player from each team is ridiculous. Some years it leads to travesty while a deserving player gets shut out.

Like anyone else though – sometimes a transvestite can be an exhibitionist.

Admittedly I’m a little biased, but no Logan Webb in this year’s All Star Game?

Does, or should, Farhan Zaidi consider trading Carlos Rodon?

I’m not even a Atlanta Braves fan, but losing the All Star Game last year was total bullish!t…

At least they won a championship, classy organization. Just my opinion, don’t care about the politics, just think the Braves got screwed in my opinion.

Padres have Machado and Musgrove in the All Star lineup.

However, they could have had those two, plus Trea Turner, David Bednar, Luis Castillo, and Max Fried, as they have all been in the organisation at some point.

That tells you everything you need to know about how poorly Preller has done in the trade market. He’s pretty much traded away an all star lineup for spare parts and duds.

Cooper and J.D. Martinez are All Stars because they ranked 3rd in the player ballot. They are having nice years but I suggest more flexibility when there is an injury replacement. Especially at “DH”, which any hitter can do in the All Star Game. It’s just that there is only 15 players in each league at a position (or perhaps a little more; 15 on the fan ballot). So the 3rd highest player vote gets in? Let’s let the league manager pick a replacement that was initially “slighted”.

No hyphen / dash in the word “All Star”. Why does everyone put one ? Writers and us fans are also always putting hyphen/dashes in “first inning” and “second round”. No need.
