Athletics Select Norge Ruiz

By Darragh McDonald | August 19, 2022 at 4:55pm CDT

The A’s announced that they have selected the contract of right-hander Norge Ruiz from Triple-A Las Vegas. Fellow righty Domingo Tapia has been optioned to create space on the active roster. The club already had a vacancy on their 40-man roster.

Ruiz, 28, was signed by the A’s in December of 2016, earning a $2MM bonus from the club. While most international signees are teenagers, Ruiz was already 22 at the time, having already played a few seasons in the Cuban National Series.

Ruiz worked as a starting pitcher in his first few years in Oakland’s system but struggled to find success there. He moved to the bullpen in 2019 and has had better results since then. He’s spent all of this year in Triple-A so far, throwing 40 innings for the Aviators. In that time, he has a 3.38 ERA with a 22.4% strikeout rate, 8.8% walk rate and 58.3% ground ball rate.

The A’s entered a rebuilding phase this year by trading away or releasing most players who were making a significant salary or approaching free agency. That’s left the roster with a number of young players still getting acclimated to big league ball, helping them drop to a 43-76 record, worst in the American League. Over the final weeks of the season, they will continue evaluating those youngsters for roles on future rosters, with Ruiz now entering the mix.

Excellent. Next bring up Ken Waldichuk and Brent Honeywell Jr. Maybe bring up Gunnar Hoglund for the last week of the season, if he keeps on throwing up zeros like he has been, what an arm he’s going to be btw

Hoglund was 2021’s Buehler. Fell due to TJS and shortsighted teams thinking it’s the end of the world to get TJS. I ageee, that dude’s gonna be good.

A’s better hope hoglund is because the rest of that trade with snead, Smith and logue have been lousy

With how badly Chapman has played since leaving Oakland, the package is fine, Chapman hasn’t been all-world 3B since leaving.

Kevin Smith clearly has a mechanical flaw he needs to fix, but once he does, he’s got a great ceiling. Logue is only 10 starts in and got some early beatdowns from great offenses, but I would give him more rope. Snead just a reliever. The package is nice for Chapman, who ultimately isn’t an MVP-level player anymore. A’s should have traded him earlier.

Please don’t pretend that trade wasn’t terrible for the A’s. Smith can’t hit. Snead should be released. Logue has only been OK at times. Hoglund better come through. Some of the players get in trade packages are head scratcher like Snead and that bum infielder form the NYY trade. Why would anybody include them in a trade?

Logue looked pretty good at times. Chapman was already on the downswing with some serious red flags for his offense, I don’t think many people were expecting the same haul as Olson.

Agreed. Logue and Snead are just getting exposure right now. Same with Smith. It takes time. Donaldson came as a catcher. Billy Beane decided to gave him a chance at third – after Chavez left as a free agent – and look what a tremendous third baseman Donaldson turned out to be. Again, it takes time to develop certain players…

And eventually Donaldson becomes Kendall Graveman, full circle.

As long as John Fisher, Billy Beane, and David Forst are in charge, nothing effing matters

Agreed. John Fisher is making the budget decisions, the big tamale! Billy Beane and his lieutenant David Forst handle office’s players personnel lol…
