Ross Atkins Addresses Blue Jays Offseason

By Simon Hampton | October 11, 2022 at 11:02pm CDT

Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins addressed reporters following the team’s playoff exit at the hands of the Mariners. With a manager still holding the interim tag, a young core that’s getting more and more expensive, and veterans dealing with injuries there’s plenty of question marks going into the offseason in Toronto.

Atkins didn’t make any firm commitments at manager just yet. Asked about the status of interim skipper John Schneider, Atkins noted that it would be “very difficult for us to find better than [him]” but cautioned he “wants more time to work through the (hiring) process” (via Julia Kreuz of MLB.com). The Jays fired Charlie Montoyo in July with the team 46-42. Schneider was handed the team through the end of the season, and the Jays went 46-28 with him at the helm. While the improvement under Schneider is evident, the team did still fall well short of expectations in the playoffs. Atkins and his front office staff certainly wouldn’t rule Schneider out because of two games, and there’d seem to be a good chance he’s retained, but he wasn’t prepared to make any move at this point.

On the playing side, Atkins seemed to indicate running back the current core to be the best path to a championship for the team. The GM both downplayed any urgency to make a core-altering trade and indicated the club had laid the groundwork in extension talks with some core players in hopes of further discussions this offseason (via Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet). Atkins didn’t divulge any specifics, but it stands to reason players like Alek Manoah, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Bo Bichette would fit into that group. Guerrero has three more seasons of arbitration control but is projected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz to earn $14.1MM next year after qualifying for early arbitration as a Super Two player in 2021. Bichette is projected for $6.1MM in his first year of eligibility and is likewise controllable through 2025. Manoah is controllable through 2027 and not yet arbitration eligible, although he’s likely to qualify for Super Two at the end of next season.

Atkins was non-committal on how active the Jays will be in free agency, but Nicholson-Smith mentions they’re expected to pursue starting pitching help. Kevin Gausman is a lock to lead the rotation, but Jose Berrios struggled to a 5.23 ERA in 2022, while Yusei Kikuchi pitched his way out of the rotation with a 5.19 ERA. Berrios will get a chance to turn things around in 2023, while Kikuchi is expected to get another crack at pitching out of the rotation next year. However, Ross Stripling is an impending free agent and Hyun Jin-Ryu will miss most, if not all, of next season recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Atkins also addressed the status of George Springer, who left the Jays final playoff game after colliding with Bichette while pursuing a shallow fly ball. The Jays announced this morning that Springer had sustained a concussion and a strained left shoulder. Atkins indicated today that Springer also has a bone spur in his right elbow and could undergo offseason surgery (Nicholson-Smith). In any event, the expectation is that he’ll be ready for spring training, although given he’s 33 with a checkered injury past and declining defensive numbers it’s fair to wonder how long the Jays will count on him as an everyday center fielder.

I’ll speak for Atkins then – Springer is turning into Jacoby Ellsbury, whether we want to admit it or not. Dude just can’t stay healthy, and next year he’s 33.

I don’t see any extension happening with Manoah, Vlad, Jr. or Bichette because they will not take early extension discounts, they will not mortgage their future potential earnings for money now. The Blue Jays are not the Braves- they won’t convince guys to stick around long term for a steep discount that’s still big money on a personal level.

I think it’d take 10 years or more at *future* market value to lock up Vlad, Jr. or Bichette.

11 years/$250M minimum for Bichette, just to get him to seriously discuss an extension ($30M for his arbitration years, plus an 8 year/$220M extension into his prime free agency years)

11 years/$363M minimum for Vlad, Jr. to seriously consider accepting an extension (3 years/$55M for his last three years of arbitration, plus an 8 year/$308M extension into his prime free agency years)

But if they’re both being pursued at the same time they’ll want similar money, so Bichette may not sign for less than Vlad, Jr. out of ego and a belief they’re similarly valuable to the Blue Jays.

Manoah doesn’t know what his true long term value is and he may be open to an early extension to secure his financial future, but a lot of guys in his position previously still got top dollar early extensions.

So he may still also ask for something like 11 years/$285M ($4M signing bonus, $1M, $35M for his arbitration years, 7 years/$245M for his prime free agency years- and he’d consider this an early extension home town discount)

Do the Blue Jays want to risk what is essentially 33 years/$900M of commitment to three players?

Vlad Jr is not worth $363 MM. That’s $2 MM less than what Betts got. Probably go off of Pujols, Votto, and Fielder contracts and what they got.

That seems like an absurd contract demand you have there for Manoah, especially in light of Strider’s deal.

Strider after one year signed what could be a 7 year, $92 million deal.

You have Manoah after two years asking for 11/$285 million.

There’s slightly different circumstances. Manoah has a longer track record, one fewer pre-Arb year getting bought out, longer years, etc. But you’ve got an extra $193 million over only four years. Seems way too high, both in years and dollars. You don’t sign pitchers for 11 year deals.

I think 6 years and something like $120 million would be enough. He’d hit the market again around 30 or 31 years old, and bank a lot of money.

Your dollar figures are grossly out of touch. Look no further than the Strider deal for a Manoah comp. You’re not close with that one. And Vladdy is coming off a good season, not a great one, and only has the one great season under his belt. He’s a defensively limited player who may not age well due to body type. If you think $363M as a minimum, I think you’re likely off by a good $60M.

Fair point, I meant more that he is ONLY a 1B / DH type, which is not a premiere defensive position. And the deeper into any extension he gets, the more likely he’s a full time DH.

But yea, you’re right, for now he plays a solid 1B.

This is such specific conjecture without comparables and that rarely works out. Besides that, I think you’re way overestimating on Vlad and Manoah, as others have pointed out.

The bullpen needs a pretty big overhaul – it was the team’s biggest weakness going into the playoffs and boy did they ever blow it. This has also been said numerous times on this site, but it’s time to seriously consider trading one of Kirk / Jansen / Moreno for pitching help.

“They”? The bullpen collapse was mostly at the hands of Jordan Romano and Anthony Bass, their two best relievers. If either of them allow one fewer hit in the gong-show inning, then the Jays likely win game 2.

You must have missed it when Mayza came in and threw a wild pitch then gave up a 3-run homer that completely changed the momentum of the game.

Bullpen top 5 is staying the same, next year will have returning Romano, Garcia, Bass, Mayza and Cimber. Don’t know how you don’t put Pop in there with a 99 sinker. So that leave 2-3 spots in the pen. Jays need 1 more high velocity guy (Pearson?) and a couple starters for depth. Which goes back to the pen, only reason Ross Stripling was even on the team at start of year was as long man so going that route jays will probably want to upgrade that as it’s currently Mitch White who shouldn’t make the team next year. In conclusion the bullpen overhaul everyone wants is actually gonna be maybe 1 good signing akin to the Garcia signing, 1-2 depth starters that you’ll have to stash in the pen and maybe a prospect promotion.

The idea that the bullpen was their weakness is constantly repeated but by results they were a decent bullpen. Especially since the deadline. I don’t think it needs an overhaul so much as an addition that could be a highest leverage type and then an ability to stay flexible in a spot or two. Their lack of pitching depth was a bigger problem that they were lucky to overcome with a relatively healthy pitching staff. I don’t see obvious internal improvements in starting depth as most of their best pitching prospects are in the lower minors or are still quite young at AA. Zulueta is the only more advanced starter but seems more likely to impact the roster as a reliever.
The feast or famine nature of the offense seems like a bigger issue to me than the bullpen. Diversifying the lineup can help to address that. But it seems like there aren’t obvious vacancies in the lineup without a bit of a forced turnover. Everyone is controlled through next year so they’d have to subtract to create the vacancies. Or add and push someone to a bench role. JBJ is a free agent and I can’t see them tendering Tapia at $5m when Merrifield can do the same thing and is owed $7m.

It’s a decent bullpen, but it lacks the shutdown arms that can shorten games and carry a team through the postseason. The 2015 Royals might be the best example of a bullpen that shortened games by having three nearly unhittable relievers.

Edwin Diaz is available, but obviously expensive. David Bednar could probably be had for a couple of mid-level prospects. Rafael Montero, Adam Ottavino, Dave Robertson, maybe Matt Moore… Adding a couple of these guys could push the Jays over the hump.

Really didn’t feel great about what he said. I get the feel that they don’t want to pay Stripling and are just gonna run out Kikuchi and White as the 4 and 5 starters, how is that supposed to work??? They refuse to acknowledge Bo is a terrible defensive shortstop, and have no intention of balancing out a righty heavy lineup. Never mind the fact they refuse to pay up to land a big time reliever. Another year with the same roster + some bargain bin pickups will lead to another first round exit, especially with John Schneider still managing. Awful decision making all around. Strap in Jays fans, I don’t expect much to be excited about this off-season.

      cheeryvladdj;

      How’d ya like Craig Kimbrel?

      For the umpteenth time…..

Bullpen pitchers are volatile. The teams that have good bullpens develop them, they don’ buy them.

Same thing for the rest of the Jays “holes”. The contact they gave to Springer was nuts. Who couldn’t see that one coming? They went through multiple CF’s in 2022 – still need a CF. They keep adding salary in FA and trade – now they’re after starting pitchers. Question….

When’s the last time the Jays promoted a player from their farm system, that was young, cheap, and had a positive impact on their team?

As the article notes – their mini-core is getting older and will be demanding big salaries because the FO keeps bringing in guys getting big salaries that aren’t as good as them. And the old guys with the big salaries are getting less productive as their long-term contracts go up, which makes them pretty much unmovable in trade unless the Jays take back the same. A team needs to regenerate itself by: 1) constantly bringing up younger players and 2) making players they have under contract better. All the Jays keep doing is trade what youngsters they have for older, expensive, established players – particularly pitchers. This works in rotisserie league where the team owners play his/her players statistics against other team owners players statistics. MLB is played on a field by human beings. And MLB is a young man’s game.

You make some really great points (although I’d argue Springer has been a great fit for the team). It’s shocking how much the team has failed to consistently develop pitching. It feels like every guy who comes up from triple A throws 91 and relies on soft contact, meanwhile everyone else is developing flamethrowers. It’s particularly laughable that we have a bottom tier farm system when Atkins said in last they want to consistently churn out waves of talent (like the dodgers do). There have been some success stories for sure (vlad, bo, Manoah,) but it seems their greatest flaw is consistently developing pitching.

Well, if you are ahead by 7 after 5, and ahead by 4 after 7, then you need to start considering your strategy for game 3. I think he panicked by removing Gausman. But you can’t bring in Romano for a two-inning save, and not have him available for a save opportunity in game 3.

Sometimes you have to manage like the game was won.

They should trade Kirk while his value is up, even tho he’s a fan favorite. Jansen is better at defense and Moreno will be better at the offense. They need bullpen help badly. And I’m talking about established set up guys caliber. They need one or 2 left handed bats. If it means that they have to trade so be it. Anyways, without playing the mlb the show gm game mode, they should shake things up

Sorry Jansen is not better than Kirk on defense. Kirk ranks in top 10 (top 5 in some) of a lot of defensive metrics. According to Baseball Prospectus (using catcher defensive adjustment as a meter) Kirk ranks third in all of baseball while Jansen ranks 70th out of 120 people who caught a game in the majors. So if you take out some of the less than 20 games caught, he is surrounded by them, he may jump 20 spots.

Pitch framing (depends on the site because of how they measure it) but Kirk is 5th and Jansen is 95th.

Throw in the fact Jansen had 7 errors and to many catcher interference in only 63 games

So all these people that keep saying Jansen is a good defensive catcher I don’t see it when I watch the games and the number don’t show it. either..

There are no robo umpires coming in case you missed it. If there were, and believe me I wish they were coming, we would have most likely seen it in the collective bargaining agreement. So as of right now it (pitch framing) is a thing and very important when you have sinker slider type pitchers (Blue Jays have many) that want those calls at or just outside the bottom of the zone.

There is a slim chance the Manford uses his power to force them in in a couple of years.

Bo Bichette is exciting but you need to take him off the shortstop position. I would get a more authoritarian manager who has been around, put an end to their goofball shenanigans in the dugout.

I think if you regress to Vlad’s numbers as a low, that’s pretty good. He’s 23 and had the most hard hit balls in the league this year, fixing a launch angle is a relatively small issue.

It would be insane to trade Vlad now coming off a down year. I do think there needs to be more accountability in terms of running out balls, not showboating while in game, but the dugout stuff everyone does.

I love Vladdy, Teo and Lourdes (yes I know Lourdes is Cuban and not Dominican, so the saying above is wrong…probably wrong for many reasons and I’ll probably get cancelled) , but when there is so much messing around on the bench, and the guys messing around are the ones making the most mental mistakes, one has to wonder if some of that screwing-around-energy could be redirected to focus on the game.

On paper they still lack the pitching. They need a solid front end starter, a mid rotation starter, and bullpen help. That lineup will get you to the playoffs, but that pitching staff can’t make a serious run in Oct.

They didn’t play baseball to win. They played for the lights. I’m sure they weren’t taught in the minors to just admire every long ball then decide to run only after it didn’t go out. It’s just a showtime team.

The Blue Jays just didn’t look like they wanted to win this year. They had the pieces to actually achieve a deep playoff run but got swept in the wild card instead. If they don’t make it further into the playoffs next two years, I’d suggest trading some pieces and do a partial rebuild.

They expected Manoah, Gausman and Ramano to carry them in the playoffs, the depth nose dives after those 3. If we got passed Seattle we would of got blown out by Houston.

Houston’s the second best team in the league so that’s hardly a ‘gotcha’

Jays need to improve run prevention, with the pieces they have they will continue to have a top offense next year.

I have trouble trusting Gausman as a consistent # 2 especially in the playoffs. I’d say they re best served adding at least a front of rotation arm behind Manoah and some much needed bullpen depth.

Guasman statistically was one of the very best pitchers in baseball this year and performed well in the playoffs. So with all due respect, you’re well off

Jays need an actual set up reliever. They will need to either resign Stripling and another starter or have to sign 2 starters. They need a left handed Outfielder.

The only real issue with the Jays is the coverage offered by Sportsnet – lacks critical insight. Jays are either World Series bound or choke artists. Jays are well run and on-track to compete – need to tinker with the mix just a little. It’s Maple Leafs’ Syndrome amongst the Toronto media – the sky is falling!

Getting Berrios to be Berrios again would take a lot of pressure off the bullpen. Starters need to do their job. Jays gave him a nice payday and he hasn’t lived up to it.

Back on October 10th 2021, I posted that I’d pass on him and would prefer to sign someone else like Noah Syndergaard. 1 year later, Berrios and the Jays are out of the playoffs and Syndergaard and the Phillies are still in the playoffs.

Noah has an ERA+ of 99 while Berrios has a 74. Noah has a +1.8 WAR while Jose has a -0.5 WAR. Enjoy the next 6 years of that.

Bo Bichette and Cavan Biggio to the Marlins for Pablo Lopez, Miguel Rojas and Joey Wendle.

Who says no…or does it look realistic?

We figure that we love the Jonathan Villar for Griffin Conine trade and the Anthony Bass and Zack Pop for Jordan Groshans trade so much, we might as well do another.

The last couple years the Toronto Blu Jays are like visiting a botanical garden where the foliage is all plastic. Its just for looks but most won’t know the difference as long as they have an excuse to buy junk food and can buy souvenirs to show off to their friends and neighbors.

You people are ridiculous. Losing a short WC series to a good team doesn’t change everything. The same way the dodgers lost to the braves last year and came back and won 111 games.

Bichette is a Below average shortstop and that was called when he was in AAA. He is still young so injuries haven’t caught up to his violent swing but they will. The #bluejays would be crazy to extend him.

Why didn’t anyone ask Ross Atkins about the Blue Jays fans on this board that tried to bash me for saying that Anthony Bass would fail the Blue Jays at the worst time? I would love to hear that answer from him or the Blue Jays fans that had plenty to say when I guaranteed that Bass would burn them at the worst time.

What in the world of Anthony Bass happened to the Blue Jays in Game 2 of the series?

So you knew that the first and only time he was going to give up 3 runs in an inning this year was in the playoffs?

Nice crystal ball you have there. More likely you were just being overly negative with a prediction and got lucky. It happens, it’s the playoffs you’re always facing good players in stressful moments. Did you predict verlander and Fried too?

        @Dustyslambchops23

I guess you weren’t around when the other Blue Jays fans were yapping because I was among many Marlins fans celebrating the departure of Anthony Bass.

To clarify, my statement when we traded him when I was getting pushback from the Blue Jays fans was that I guaranteed that Anthony Bass would implode under pressure at the worst time. To me, it wasn’t really anything special as a prediction or guarantee because we saw that from him for 1 /12 seasons while he was with us melting under pressure over and over and over and over again. If anything, those Blue Jays fans were being pretty stupid to think that I would be wrong. Bass is a low-pressure MR, not a guy you bring in to any stressful situation. And it shows in his demeanor and face every time he’s entering a game in a high-leverage situation. He lacks the testicular fortitude to handle those situations.

        @Darthyen

Thank you. You’re one of the guys that remember my statements about Bass. Honestly, was it really hard for any of us to see that coming? People outside of the Marlins fan base didn’t realize that Mattingly protected Bass this season by strategically placing him in certain situations that he could handle and pad his stats, especially going into the trade deadline. When I saw it happened, I started laughing for the first time at a Bass appearance that I watched…and enjoyed how we actually got Groshans for him.

Of note: Seeing that game had Yimi Garcia, Anthony Bass and Adam Cimber in a game that the bullpen blew was de ja vu for me…except they’re all wearing Blue Jays uniforms now. Now I know not all of them blew it, but that was what happened with us. Maybe one or two would survive the outing, but someone would blow it at some point.

Come on Blue Jays fans that were yapping. Crow is being served!

The fact of the matter is that Anthony Bass is a very average reliever. The Mariners had him for a hot minute last season and jettisoned him. Look at his stats prior to 2022, maybe one decent season. This year he was getting lucky somehow but Shapiro didn’t look into his peripherals when he traded for him. At any rate, he should not have been put in that situation. You start Romano there with a clean inning if you want him going two innings anyway.

I remember the whole back and forth and you did say this would happen and like I said you were the first person that came to mind when it did. However you did say it would happen more often but Bass had a OK year on the whole.Again I was not one of your combatants on that day just a popcorn eater.

For me I didn’t care about getting Bass as I thought Pop was more the key long term BUT I was pissed that the front office did not get more overall for the bullpen. A high velo arm would have been nice.

Anyway enjoy watching them eat that crow if they are not full from Turkey (Thanksgiving in Canada Monday gone)

I think it is safe to say Springer has Sprung! Not being mean here at all; he’s just to accident prone to play in the field anymore. Permanent DH is his best option and where he can best help the team.

I also think it’s time for Bo to move over to 2B. His arm is not strong enough for SS. Jays should make a serious run for Correa.

The bullpen is in desperate need of pitchers who miss bats and who are able to consistently lock the game down. Championship teams have lock down bullpens period!

If Ryu is most likely not even going to be able to pitch in 2023 then why hang on to him? He’s not getting any younger!! The Jays need quality starters that can stay healthy!

Trade Kirk and keep Moreno and Jansen.

Just a few of my thoughts….

Starting pitching, Center Fielder who is not accident prone, SS with a stronger arm, a lock down bullpen and way more consistent hitting; not just one player at a time having a hot bat!

Jays management has their work cut out for them and they better get on it soon!

Jays seem to be going nowhere. Raptors seem to going somewhere.
