Bloom: Bogaerts Remains Red Sox’s Preferred Option At Shortstop

By Anthony Franco | November 7, 2022 at 10:31pm CDT

The Red Sox and star shortstop Xander Bogaerts didn’t agree on a contract extension before the start of the offseason. The four-time All-Star officially opted out of the final three years on his deal with Boston this morning, sending him to the open market for the first time in his career. The Sox still have exclusive negotiating rights with Bogaerts through Thursday, but there’s little question at this point his representatives at the Boras Corporation will soon be in contact with other teams.

Speaking with reporters (including Alex Speier of the Boston Globe) this evening, Boston chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom reiterated that retaining Bogaerts would be the Sox’s ideal choice for addressing shortstop. “We want him here. He makes us better,” Bloom said. “We respect his right to exercise [the opt-out] and to explore the market. We want him back and we will stay engaged with him.”

Boston’s baseball operations leader acknowledged the presence of a few other star free agent shortstops — namely Carlos Correa, Trea Turner and Dansby Swanson. While Bloom suggested the team would explore the market for potential alternatives, he didn’t mince words when expressing the front office’s overall preference. “He’s our first choice. That’s not going to change,” he told reporters. “Part of our jobs is to explore every option to field a contending team next year and put together a really good group. We need to explore every possible way to do that, but Bogey’s our first choice.”

Bloom indicated he believes either Trevor Story or Enrique Hernández would be capable of playing shortstop if necessary but made clear the team would prefer to keep them at other positions to keep Bogaerts around. Story moved to second base this past season. While he’d played his whole career at shortstop with the Rockies prior to this year, Story has spoken about his desire to stick at the keystone if it means the Red Sox re-sign their longtime shortstop. That’d presumably keep Hernández in center field primarily, with the lackluster free agent market at that position seemingly playing a role in Boston’s decision to keep the utilityman around with a $10MM contract extension on Labor Day.

Of course, this is far from the first time Sox’s brass has gone on record about their affinity for Bogaerts. Immediately after the season, Bloom called re-signing the four-time Silver Slugger winner before free agency the team’s top priority. That obviously didn’t happen, and Speier writes that while the sides did have some discussions after the season wrapped up, it became clear fairly early on they wouldn’t get a deal done before the opt-out date.

Boston is sure to kick off the offseason by tagging Bogaerts with a qualifying offer. They’d receive only minimal compensation if he were to sign elsewhere, however. Because the Red Sox exceeded the base luxury tax threshold this past season, they’d add only an extra draft choice after the fourth round. Conversely, signing a player like Turner or Swanson who rejects a qualifying offer from another team — Correa is ineligible to receive a QO because he’s previously received one in his career — would lead Boston to forfeit both their second and fifth-highest picks in next year’s draft and $1MM in international signing bonus space. Certainly, the front office will weigh their long-term projections of each of the top free agents more heavily than the draft choices in deciding how to proceed, but they’d pay a heavier draft penalty for adding either Swanson or Turner than they would for retaining Bogaerts (and thus forfeiting the compensatory pick).

Bogaerts heads into his age-31 season coming off a .307/.377/.456 mark through 631 plate appearances. His power production dipped relative to his best seasons, but he hit above .285 with an on-base percentage at .360 or better for the fifth straight year. He also earned slightly above-average marks from public defensive metrics, an important step towards quieting some concerns he’ll have to move off shortstop in the relatively near future.

Boras is now looking for someone to overpay for Xander. It won’t be Boston. He might end up back in Boston if no one overpays. The sticking point for Boston will probably be the number of years in my opinion.

suit – The way ticket sales are shaping up, I think Henry realizes he will have to “overpay” for either Xander or Devers … or make a big splash in free agency. The Red Sox sales office is making panic calls to every person who bought tickets for even just one game during the past few years, that’s how bad ticket revenue is already dropping. Getting rid of both Xander and Devers would be a major PR hit.

stymee – You couldn’t be more wrong.

Before 2020 the vast majority of seating was owned by season ticket holders, either full season or partial season. There was a long waiting list to become a season ticket holder.

A very, very limited number of individual game tickets would go on sale starting around December. Availability included only the worst of seats (RF corner, obstructed view, single seats) and the least appealing games (April weekday, early May weekday, September weekday).

Now? Plenty of season tickets and single game tickets available because they aren’t selling, If you had watched on TV the Fenway games broadcast in August and September, you’d have seen the thousands of empty seats.

Many teams that struggle to sell tickets reach out to those who would most likely be interested in purchasing tickets – the same people who have already bought tickets in the past.

          You want numbers?

Red Sox attendance in 2022 was the lowest it’s been since 2000.

        Fever Pitch Guy;

        Really!

The Red Sox have the name and phone number of “every person who bought tickets for even just one game during the past few years”.

        LOL

Do they have a computer file of their fingerprints or do they keep facial recognition…or both? Do they put a lien on a persons house if they buy a ticket and their method of payment fails?

Do fans now have to disclose personal information to buy a ticket to a baseball game? Is this what it’s come to? Has Scott Boras somehow gotten a list of ticket buyers personal information so he can enlist their support to get his clients larger contracts with MLB teams?

And here I thought Amazon was intrusive and controlling.

Technically since every team has gone to digital tickets only in the wake of the pandemic, they indeed would have the phone number of every ticket buyer. “Your phone is your ticket”, after all.

Depending upon what you ‘sign’ and agree to when you buy a ticket this way, they could have the right to phone-spam you. Seems like bad marketing though it would be possible.

steve – You are 100% correct, but it’s not just digital tickets. When you purchase print at home, mail delivery, and Will Call tickets online, you are required to set up an account with information that includes your name, debit/credit card number, billing information and phone number.

Samuel doesn’t attend games, therefore he wouldn’t know this. He probably thinks tickets for every team can still be purchased in person at their box office ticket window. LOL!

I got called by the Yankees every year, even after I gave up my tickets. That’s why they call it a marketing department.

FWIW, for the Yankee fans, they use to have an off-season event every year for the package owners. Every available seat had a sign on it. Folks could grab a hot dog and snacks in the cafeteria, and walk around the stadium to see if you wanted to change seats.

For the folks behind the plate, you’d have your own personal guide. The fun part was when I was arranging a tiny upgrade, the woman standing next to me handed over her credit card for a $26k purchase. I thought I heard someone mutter “back of the line Joey”, or maybe that was just me.

          Ahhh, Joe….

But you were a “package holder”.

I heard a guy say maybe 15 years ago that a Yankee season ticket holder bought something like 4 seats behind home plate but up a ways, and he wrote a check for something like $600-700k. Again, that was about 15 years ago. Wonder how much today.

I doubt the small market teams get even $100k for that block of seats in their park.

Yup. I went from full-season to a partial season (but nicer seats), to a smaller partial season. One partner moved upstate, another to L.I. another to VA., and another was getting married.

You can get a pretty decent deal, if you have 6 people splitting it up. Even then, it was okay. But the NYY started selling thru Stubhub (supposedly). So if I had 16 Friday night games, and can’t make 1-2, my resale ability is no longer there. The whole goal was to get good tickets for the RS games, and sell off enough to reduce my investment to a reasonable amount, but that became too difficult as time went on.

About 40 years ago, one of the minions at the local pub brought a whole bunch of us together for the Sunday package. Lower level, but the second tier (just behind the aisle) 2nd row, adjacent to 3rd base. The tickets were $15 each, IIRC. That was at the inflection point where we were old enough to no longer be dirt-poor, but young enough where none of us were married, gave no thought about getting up on Monday, etc.

Joe – Same here. I travel a lot to see the Sox in different cities, and when I buy tickets directly from a rival team for even just one game, some of the teams will email me and call me trying to sell more tickets.

The Marlins even invited me to a nice pre-season fan fest where I got free stuff and was able to mingle with former players … all because I bought a handful of tickets the prior year.

When ticket sales are way down, teams will do what they gotta do to sell.

Canó was good for Seattle. It was just the back-end of that contract that was undesirable because of his PED suspension and the team needing to change direction and rebuild. Worked out well with the Mets absorbing most of the salary remaining on that contract.

I don’t think Bogaerts would offer the same offense for Seattle, so yeah, I don’t think a multi-year contract with Seattle would end well. It may not even begin well.

Not saying Cano wasn’t good, but it was a clear oversign (in years and dollars) for a SEA trying to prove themselves to free agents/fans, etc. The saving grace was unloading that deal…and Cano getting suspended (without pay) for multiple times for PED use.

Kelenic not becoming a star (yet), Díaz ascending to cult-like status and not having to pay some of Cano’s cinderblock deal due to PED suspension has made that deal look rosier for NYM.

That deal was supposed to give Seattle significant salary relief and push the Mets into serious contention.

It gave Seattle what they wanted most (and it’s worth nothing that Dunn helped them land Suárez), whereas New York finished 3rd, 4th, 3rd, and 2nd with an early postseason exit since that deal.

But yeah, NY didn’t get burned as bad as it appeared thanks to the suspensions.

The shortstop carousel is my top off season storyline.

There’s a distinct possibility the shortstops in LA, Boston, and Atlanta are all back. There’s a big possibility they all change.

And if any team comes out of the blue like the Rangers last year, one might be left without a premium shortstop.

Maybe I’m off base, but I find it hard to believe that the Sox paid all that money to Story with the intent of playing him at 2B. Did they sour on Story a bit, and decide he wasn’t the guy, and they’re better with Bogaerts at SS after all? Story is the better defender, and his work at short was part of his value. Or am I reading too much into a $140M deal for a guy to play 2B?

Say what you want but Story has had arm issues and when he wasn’t injured, he played the best second base in the league. While he’s security, they also have Mayer who is expected to be the real deal and ready sometime in 24. Whomever plays SS in 23 had to be willing to move to third if and when Mayer is ready.

Do you realize that “eta” on the prospect page has more to do with when the guy needs to be added to the 40 man roster for rule 5 protection than actually when the organization thinks they will be ready?

drascoo36–the ETA on a prospect page has nothing to do with Rule 5 eligibility. It is a projection on when they (whoever assembles the list) think the player will be called up. The Red Sox wouldn’t have to worry about adding Mayer to the 40 man to protect from Rule 5 until 2026.

YBC – That was absolutely the original plan, having Story replace Xander at SS.

However that plan changed because of Story’s continued arm issues. He was near the bottom in arm strength among all MLB middle infielders, that’s why he didn’t play even one inning at SS this season.

If his arm doesn’t miraculously improve, his days at SS are seemingly over.

Story didn’t play any SS in 2022 because the Sox didn’t want him potentially outplaying Bogaerts there and creating a controversy on the team regarding who should be playing there. It’s not different than the entire time A-Rod and Jeter were on the same team in NY. Everyone on the planet knew A-Rod was the better defensive SS but he was never allowed to play any SS even when Jeter was out of the lineup to avoid the controversy.

His very first trade – the Betts debacle – where he got ripped off by his old boss in Tampa was all I needed to see to know he’s no good. The sooner they dump Bloom the better.

I’m not sure if the trade was mandated by ownership or if the trade was a means to an end. Ownership may have Bloom to reduce salary and with Betts having refused a massive extension offer, Bloom decided to kill three birds.

I don’t know why but I always had a high opinion of Price but his attitude was awful in Boston.

I also disagree with the other poster, I don’t think the Red Sox were “robbed”. Yeah Jeter Downs has been a bust, but he was very highly regarded. Alex Verdugo is a very good player… not grabbing Buterol was the biggest mistake Bloom made

You are reading too much into it… the new anti-shift rules will put more pressure on second basemen and great defenders at second, Story, will become a lot more valuable.
Did the Red Sox have grander to move Story to short, possibly. Did his arm issue worsen or simply not improve, another strong possibility. But I think now with the rules and seeing Story play, cover ground at second it’s the first choice to have him there.
Outside of cano, I can’t recall many second basemen getting massive paydays but then again, I don’t remember many really stellar second basemen who performed at a high level on offense and defense (not that Story performed well on offense last year).

Actually Kike’s defensive metrics at SS are very good and he doesn’t have arm issues like Story does.

I think they keep Kike in CF, but moving him to SS as a stopgap for Mayer is not necessarily a bad idea.

Maybe, they just want to get him at their price and not his price. Any payroll not going to XB can be used to improve the lineup elsewhere. You do want them to make improvements as well, don’t you?

If Sox don’t sign Bogey and Devers, they will end up with worse at both positions. Does anyone really think they will pay Correa what he’s going to want? Swanson will resign with Braves as they are locking up everyone of their stars unlike the Red Sox. The Dodgers will resign Turner. What’s left? How does 5th place in the AL East sound for the next few years?

That’s the main problem for the Red Sox, a ridiculously competitive division.I doubt they can sign 2-3 guys and be back in the thick of it with tampa or Toronto.
They should try to extend Devers now, but if they can’t, they should do a mini rebuild (like they have 6 or 7 times this century.

Ohyeadam – Bloom never gives a straight answer, but the plan is already in place. IMO, you are correct that Story will be at SS. Arroyo (RH) who the Red Sox like a lot will split time with Enmanuel Valdez (LH) for a platoon a 2B. The money saved will be deployed in the starting rotation and the outfield. Vazquez will return to platoon with Reese McGuire (and a thank you for netting Bloom them Enmanuel Valdez.

The problem with Xander is that he’s a very good player but not great by MLB standards. It would be hard for any team to pay much better than what he was making annually in Boston. I know he’s gotten better defensively but still his offensive numbers are not elite. I think it’s more about years for Bogaerts. I’ll say this I’d rather have him than Correa or Swanson. Swanson hasn’t had enough years of good ball to command a huge deal not even close and Correa is just a cheating scumbag. For some reason people think Correa and Seager are better than they actually are. The numbers don’t lie.

“We want him back” – signed his replacement last offseason and failed to hammer-out an extension while they had the chance. “Bogey’s our first choice” – he’s not even the first choice on the present roster. Classic public relations (read: don’t blame the front office).

The Fielding Bible normally rates him #3-4 overall. That’s really good. FG has him as 69 DRS in 6 years. Again, quite good.

My guess is Xander signs elsewhere. He’s not going to hit the open market and find offers significantly less than what he wants; and if the BoSox we’re willing to come anywhere close to his ask, the deal probably would’ve already been done.

I think the Story is at SS in Boston next year and they sign Segura to play 2B. Bloom will sign a 3rd or 4th type SP with the extra money and that’ll be Boston’s offseason.

Let’s see what we have here……

o Chaim Bloom is now groveling in a PR sort of way to bring Bogaerts back. Is he sincere?

o The rumor got out that the Phillies are interested in Mr. Bogaerts. Yesterday they seemingly passed on the option with their 2B, leading to speculation that they’ll move their young SS to 2B and pay a kings ransom to get a name SS.

o The Phillies PoBO likes to spend money, and was fired unexpectedly by the Red Sox owner a few years ago. Recently he noted in a mini-press conference – with his new team in the World Series – that he didn’t care for the way he was dismissed from the Red Sox.

    Enter Scott Boras, stage right……

o Mr. Boras has made a fortune both for his organization and his clients by pitting desperate FO heads and owners against other desperate FO heads and owners to run up the price for his clients. No demand on his part is too absurd….and the money is only a part of it.

Poor Chaim Bloom found out a month or so ago what he really walked into. If he loses Mr. Bogaerts he’s toast – Red Sox fans will bring the toaster. If he signs Mr. Bogaerts – or any other name SS – to an absurd contract he’ll wish he was back in Tampa Bay where they have more money to work with to build their team over the next few years than he’ll have.

    ‘As The Red Sox Turn’.

    Popcorn time.

Nah. IMO, there are enough RS fans out there, like myself, that know their hearts want Bogaerts back, but their brains keep saying ‘nonononono.’.

My guess is that Bloom has a number and will stick to it.

        Joe;

My cousin and his wife took a vacation to New England maybe 5 summers ago. They were driving through Boston. He was playing with the car radio and found a sports talk station. Told me the callers and the host were yelling at one another. He thought it was funny.

I’m a RS fan, not a RS-fan fan. Some are quite knowledgeable, but some of them are barely literate. And some of it is quite funny. One guy complaining that Papi wasn’t sacrificing in a game at Colorado, with one out. All because he had a GDP.

Another was upset that Miggy hit a line-drive HR that bounced off the top of the wall and into the stands. Said Betts should’ve been position on the warning track.

Or how many posters, just a month or so back, insisted that Judge should be given an IBB with no one out and no one on. You know, the kind of thing that happened exactly -0- times in 44,000 plate appearances this year. And exactly -0- last year in 44,000 PAs.

Joe – How many times has a guy had a 62-homer season?

In 2004 Bonds was intentionally walked 19 times with nobody on base, and walked 120 times overall that year.

It’s really quite simple, when a guy is having a historically great season you don’t let him beat you.

And of course you failed to mention how the Red Sox lost because Judge wasn’t walked.

Bogaerts heads into his age-31 season coming off a .307/.377/.456 mark through 631 plate appearances.
    ===================================
I’m not sure if anyone mentioned this before me, but he is heading into his age-30 season.

For a player edging out of his prime, that’s an important detail. Age-30 makes it thru his age-36 season on a 7-year deal, making at a fair bit less cringy than age-37.

I know I am going to be wrong at the end, but give him the Story deal ++.

Offer Boggie 3 years for $150. Extend Raffy for 5 years $150.
    Devers, Xander, Story and Casas
I’d like to see a rotation of: Sale, Wacha and Eovaldi, Pivetta + Bello and Mata.
Pen: Whitlock, Houck, Schreiber, Josh Taylor, Barnes, Brasier, Kelly.

I don’t believe it. Xander and Raffy need to be re-signed long term. The Mookie situation was severely mishandled by Bloom and we got a snack bag full of Pennies in return for the Maserati we gave the dodgers. Can’t have that happen again. Bloom also needs to get off his a** and get GOOD starting pitching. Not Paxton, not an 95 year old Rich hill. Go get free agents or make a couple trades for QUALITY starting pitching and improve the freakin bullpen. I know it’s a weird strategy to get GOOD players but let’s maybe give that a whirl and see if we might not finish last!!!!!!

I think they let Xander go. Probly devers also.
They will need a 1B, C, 3 SP, 2 RP, and aSs/3b and CF. They need help and they need money. As I can see Eovaldi, bogarts devers, Martinez is only about 75-80 total Not nearly w ouch to re stock w Free agents or trade. Unless they trade Devers. For some good prospects. Maybe Arizona.

Bloom is a lousy negotiator and comes off as desperate….playing right into Boras’s hands.
His ridiculous comments just upped the price on Xander. Xander is an above average player who is not worth 30-35M per year.
Boras is trying to get Bryce Harper money or more for Xander.
Can’t blame Boros that is his job to get the best deal possible for his client(s).
Whichever team gives Xander 30M+ for 7-10 years will live to regret it. The last 3 or 4 years will be “lost money” as his stats crash down to earth to average levels and as his declining defense will require him to move off SS to another position,

With or without Bogaerts, the Sox have a long way to go to compete in the AL East. They can’t be tied down by a lengthy expensive contract if Bogaerts holds them hostage.

It’s a tough move, but I think the right call is to let him walk if he wants $30/year over 6+ seasons.

Personally, I think 5/125 is fair for both sides but Semien and Seager broke the market last year. Teams are going to have to draft and develop more so than ever before and win with arb/team controlled players making big contributions.

Bogarts home vs road splits are such that they indicate he is a much better hitter at Fenway. The other shortstops – Correa, Turner, Swanson don’t have career home vs road splits that have such a gap. I think he is better off staying in Fenway.
