Latest On Yankees’ Free Agent Targets

By Mark Polishuk | November 24, 2022 at 3:50pm CDT

The Yankees are certainly hoping they’ll be able to re-sign Aaron Judge, but until the AL MVP makes his decision, the Yankees are considering several other free agents and trade targets.  In addition to some names already linked to New York in past reports, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman writes that the Yankees have checked in on the likes of Justin Verlander, Carlos Rodon, Brandon Nimmo, Cody Bellinger, Michael Conforto, and their own incumbent free agents Jameson Taillon and Andrew Benintendi.

In general, it’s pretty commonplace for the Yankees (or pretty much any team, particularly the biggest spenders) to at least get in contact with agents early in the offseason in order to gauge interest, or get a sense of asking prices for any particular player.  As such, some of these players might not necessarily be at the top of the Yankees’ target list, and Heyman notes that some could be options only if Judge signs elsewhere.  For instance, though “the Yankees seek multiple outfielders,” Heyman doesn’t think the Bronx Bombers would both re-sign Judge and also add Nimmo on a pricey contract.  Likewise, the Yankees aren’t expected to bid at the top of the shortstop market, unless a Judge departure gives them new reason to explore Carlos Correa, Trea Turner, and company.

Since Anthony Rizzo has already been re-signed to solidify the first base position, New York’s offseason plan on the position player side looks pretty set — retain Judge, then add a less-expensive second outfielder (Conforto or Bellinger are both likely candidates for one-year contracts).  Should an opportunity arise to move an infielder like Josh Donaldson, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, or perhaps even Gleyber Torres, the Yankees could pounce, but the presence of Oswaldo Cabrera, Oswald Peraza, and yet-to-debut star rookie Anthony Volpe gives the Bombers some flexibility in figuring out the infield mix.  DJ LeMahieu’s toe injuries will also factor into the front office’s next decisions.

If Judge did leave the Bronx, of course, any number of new backup plans could be put into place.  However, a Judge departure may only throw the position-player scenarios into flux, since Heyman writes that “the pitching pursuits are said to be ’on different tracks’ ” than the Yankees’ interest in position players.  Though naturally adding any high-profile player has an overall impact on a roster in terms of salary or luxury-tax figures, it makes sense that adding a new pitcher isn’t necessarily tied to Judge’s situation, since Judge’s return has a bigger chain reaction on the lineup as a whole.

Putting a new starter into the rotation is a cleaner fit, especially if that new addition is an ace like Verlander or Rodon.  While the Cy Young Award winner has been a Yankees target in the past, Heyman reports that “the Yankees’ confidence level on [signing] Verlander is low,” so he might also be something of a Plan B option for the club.

The Yankees also might not necessarily be seeking an ace, since Gerrit Cole and Nestor Cortes are already in the fold.  Since Luis Severino, Frankie Montas, and Domingo German have their share of question marks, adding a reliable third-starter type like Taillon would help solidify the starting five.  Kodai Senga (another pitcher garnering interest from the Bronx) is perhaps something of a wild card, given how it isn’t known how well he can make the transition from NPB to the major leagues.  Senga’s stuff could make him a front-of-the-rotation arm might off the bat, or he might end up being more suited to the middle or back of a pitching staff.

I really think Bellinger would be making a mistake if he went to the Bronx. He needs a lower profile environment and nyc would eat him alive (see Joey Gallo among many others) if he didn’t produce immediately

Joe, he is a good enough human being and has 5 tools. But I feel like the Bronx would crush him if he continues at the same pace in NYC as he has in LA.

Trumbo,,( can you really say he has 5 tools now? That hit tool just isn’t there anymore. I get your point – he can certainly help a team other ways, hence all of the interest. But that one season seems like an outlier, like someone who one what was coming perhaps.

Coop, yeah I should have been more specific. Talent wise he HAS THE TOOLS! But using them is another story. It is going to take someone with a great knowledge of hitting to help correct him. It’s not the yips. It’s worse and more complex.

@Trumbo From Belli’s camp perspective, I don’t think he’s necessary looking for top dollars but rather a team who is willing to give him enough playing time to reestablish value. That place isn’t the Yankees and it will be another Joey Gallo situation if he struggles.

Yankees fans turn on their players and hate them if they go 0-4 in a game. Imagine if Bellinger was the Bellinger of the last 3 years there? They would murder him.

Deej: The fact that people buy into that narrative is sad because it’s completely untrue. A large majority of Yankees fans don’t boo good players at all…..like, never. Aaron Hicks? Different story. He sucks. Bad. And he makes dumb comments.

Aaron Judge? Yeah, maybe 1,000 out of the 45,000 people there. And they’re not even booing him as much as they’re booing Cashman/Hal/Yankees for not putting a better product around him.

Look, Trevor Plouffe said on his podcast that the booing doesn’t matter. It’s irrelevant and every player knows that if you don’t play well, you’re getting it from some fans. NY is just more prominent, and yes, more passion. This is a media sound it’s that’s getting way overblown and fans are latching on to this as if there’s actually something there when there isn’t.

Players know this though. They’ve known it ever since the 20s and 30s. It’s not new news. It’s like getting surprised when you’re told you have to cut your hair.

What does environment have to do with having a flawed swing?? Bellinger’s issues are having two big of a swing making it next to impossible to get to pitchers high in zone. Compounding the issue is the injury to his shoulder, likely making adjusting swing even more uncomfortable than change already is in general.

Once Judge With the Giants, the flood gates will open. Look for for the Yanks to strike quickly to lock up Austin Hedges to back up Trevino.
Hedges will straighten out the Yankee pitchers.

Joe, his bat is pretty slow to the ball because his swing is long. But, he’s supposedly got quick enough hands to catch up to high90’s FBs. It’s weird, but that part about his transition to MLB makes me somewhat concerned about his ability to keep his contact & BABIP consistent coming over.

It also makes me nervous because the last guy to have “fast hands” didn’t work out very well for us……… how is Jackson doing anyway?

It’s a bit long, not Florial long, but long. I would worry about him facing Tampa Bay and all their hard throwing pitchers. He will need some serious pitch recognition to catch up to those fastballs.
The worst part about Jackson is his ten cent head. I still believe he has the tools to succeed. Unless he is still suffering from post concussion vision issues.

FWIW, I think he’s going to be a decent slugger who cannot field a lick. A Rhys Hoskins type. So for teams who need a DH, I think he’s worth taking a chance on. But if you want him for an every day OF spot, I’d think twice.

Well, Suzuki landed an $85M contract/5 with a $5M bonus. Bennintendi is projected to earn somewhere around $110M, and Nimmo is projected upwards of $130-$150M. I think he’s going to be right around Benintendi, honestly. $100M-$110M range/5 years (that includes the signing bonus too though).

He’s not a power guy, not good with the glove. Some reports have him average in LF, others have said he’s below average. He’s certainly got raw power, but it doesn’t translate often to the game. He’s projected to hover around 15-20 HRs in the majors.

He’s a contact hitter with an incredible BB/K ratio.

I have a weird feeling Yankees stand pat and roll the dice on internal options for the most part plus re-signing Judge, possibly trying to offload IKF and/or Gleyber for pitching/depth and calling up Volpe, etc and then crossing their fingers on Donaldson etc.

Why not go into the season with Cabrera in LF? I know the Yankees believe it’s a requirement to have a former All Star at every position, but why not give a young, versatile athlete a chance to prove himself? If he struggles, corner outfielders can be found basically any time. Young energy is exactly what the Yankees need with or without Judge.

I’m pretty certain that Cabrera is intended to be the utility player, since he plays so many positions so well.
The long and the short of it is we need a steady left fielder. Hopefully that’s Benintendi, but if not then Cashman will need to find someone.

Having jettisoned away Jordan Montgomery and traded away all of their LH MLB ready prospects, I suspect if they do something in free agency with pitching it should be with Carlos Rodon. This would especially be the case if the Giants steal away Aaron Judge.

Also, this winter they should be working on a contract extension for Severino. He is one of five players whose contract expire at the end of 2023 along with Donaldson, IKF, Bader, and Peralta. Amazingly they have to pay Donaldson $8M not to play for them in 2024. What a life.

I don’t know about the old days, but I don;t think any player wants or likes being booed. At some point it is going to effect future players when they have a choice on where to play. In the old days the team owned you, and you had no choice!

The problem I have is that many fans act like it’s only the Yankees fans that boo. Far from it. How about the Phillies with Alex Bohm? Or the Mets fans with Baez, Lindor, etc, etc. Fans of many different teams in a variety of sports boo, especially those in larger, more competitive markets.

Players don’t like it but they sure like those $300Ms going into the account. In this hypercritical age, if cops, teachers, and preachers can get slammed and publicly torched, players can certainly take it when they play poorly.

If not, take less money to play somewhere you won’t get booed. Sometimes you can’t have it both ways and you’ve got to put on your big boy pants and just admit when you’ve done poorly, own the criticism like a man, and work through it. If you’ve got to leave because of it, fine by me – you’re too soft to be in NY then. And, I don’t even agree with the concept of booing because I think it’s just an ineffectual emotional response (like yelling at the TV).

I met this guy once who told me that in 1830 my ancestors in Congress passed the Indian Removal Act and he was mad he lost his land like that’s my problem. I had a few bucks in my pocket so I gave it to him thinking that would be the end of it, but no. He started making a scene telling everyone that I thought twelve dollars could erase history.

Right. No wonder looked so familiar. Good one. I was focused on mlb , trying to recall my old baseball cards. Cubbies w a good stach. I was a bit fooled by the blond though to be honest. Why I went tabler or sutcliffe. Tidrow was darker if I recall correctly.

Why would the Yankees pivot to the top of the SS market, if Judge signs elsewhere? They’d bail on the kids now, because Judge left? Doesn’t make sense. They’d need two starting outfielders but not a SS.

But if they got a really fast shortstop he could run out there if he had to. And you think the Yankees don’t know what they’re doing. Yeesh.

    Question?
Shohei is pitching every sixth day. Angel way again for 2023 I understand.
Is he comfortable with that. Is that in his opinion maximizing his energy balance for hitting and pitching?
    Why I ask ?
If he goes to another team will they have to adjust to a six man rotation. ?
Teams/contenders that have established 1,2 and 3 starters ( Angels other than Sho don’t)will be affected negatively.
How will that play out moving forward.
Maybe it’s best for him in Angels uni after all.

Guys who are pencilled in for 30-32 starts a year aren’t gonna be happy. Sorry Verlander Cole Scherzer Gausman Nola et al you’re only pencilled for 25/26 starts. No way. It’s $$$$$$

They can all still pitch on their regular schedule. It’s the 6th guy who will have the adjustment and might have to do some long relief when schedule doesn’t line up.

Doesn’t it seem a given that the Yankees will try to move Josh Donaldson and Aaron Hicks before shopping for free agents?

It seems a given they will use them as an excuse not to shop but can you really see them paying another team to take those contracts?

Emack I agree with you. No I do not see them paying money to get rid of those contracts. That is something they are loath to do as their history will show. And who would want those players, unless most of their contract is paid off by the Yankees, or they included some major prospect, which they would not do either. Cashman does not have the GM chops of say theo epstein, who would’ve been found a way to do it.

I think Carlos Rodon is the power play here. The Red Sox are the team that really needs him, but I have my doubts they will spring for the cash. SO New York needs to make a strong play for Rodon, solidify the dual aces threat that most teams need these days in the postseason. If NY doesn’t sign him, some middling Midwest club like Minnesota or Texas will sign him and his great pitching will go for naught like it did last season with San Fran.

I agree with C-Ro (as I’ve affectionately named him). He’s the way to go to push the team forward in the pitching side.

Clip I agree with you, but in my view the Yankees problem now is on the hitting side, not the pitching side. They seem to manage to splice together and put together a decent staff every year, with the aid of their astute pitching coach blake. The latter is one positive thing that GM Cashman has done.
Largely, we have not lost in the postseason because of our pitching, even when it was not so good.

As you well know, every year what dooms us, ultimately in the postseason is our pitiful impotent offense. That’s the area that needs to be dramatically improved. You don’t have to be a genius to understand that you start by excising the useless carcasses of donaldson, Hicks and I KF. Then you play the kids who are ready to play, and acquire the Premier free agents that you can. Just bringing back Aaron Judge is not going to do it , or we will end up with the same disappointing demise as this year. But unfortunately that’s probably all that Cashman will do ,other than filling in some areas of need with dumpster diving as he usually does. And then think he’s such a genius for discovering a diamond in the rough.

Avoiding the shortstop market for 2 years in a row is a bad idea.

Someone has to play 3rd next year and missing out on Correa or Turner is going to be a huge mistake in the long run.

Doesn’t surprise me. The problem with the Yankees is Hal Steinbrenner and Brian Cashman. Until they’re both gone nothing will change.

If you have major league SS prospects why would you pay $300 million for one? Especuially ones who aren’t going to produce for you the way they did for their previous teams.

Because that’s where the FA depth is, they can play other positions. prospects can be traded and prospects are unproven.

The question is if they want to win now or rebuild.

That’s exactly right emac. And just because you have prospects, doesn’t mean they’re going to work out, we’ve seen this show before with the Yankees. Bunch of overhyped prospects that turned into total busts. And meanwhile a few more years of the championship window is wasted waiting for these prospects to develop lol.
