Carlos Rodon Seeking Six-Year Deal

By Steve Adams | December 5, 2022 at 11:43am CDT

With Jacob deGrom and Justin Verlander off the market — to the Rangers and to the Mets, respectively — Carlos Rodon is the clear top starting pitcher left on the free-agent market. As one would expect for a 29-year-old lefty (30 next week) who opted out of the second season of his contract on the heels leading the National League in strikeouts, the asking price appears quite high. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that agent Scott Boras and Rodon have been seeking a six-year deal at an annual rate of $30MM or more. (Notably, that report pre-dates Verlander’s new agreement with the Mets.) Heyman suggests that the Yankees are the large-market team that is most focused on Rodon at present.

As always, it’s worth taking early asking prices with a grain of salt to some degree. That’s not to say Rodon can’t reach six years and/or a $30MM+ annual value, but it behooves any free agent to at least initially set a lofty asking price. A six-year deal for Rodon would put the lefty in rarefied air, as the list of free-agent pitchers to secure such a commitment is quite short.

No free-agent pitcher has pulled in six-plus years on the open market since the 2019 Winter Meetings, when Gerrit Cole (nine years, $324MM) and Stephen Strasburg (seven years, $245MM) managed to do so. Prior to that pairing, the only free-agent deals of six or more years in length over the past decade have gone to Yu Darvish, Johnny Cueto, Max Scherzer, Jon Lester, David Price, Zack Greinke (twice!) and Patrick Corbin. Starting pitchers earning more than $30MM annually are similarly rare; Cole, Strasburg, Scherzer, Price, Greinke, Verlander, Clayton Kershaw, Trevor Bauer and deGrom are the only pitchers to ever reach that level.

For Rodon to join either group of arms, he’ll need to convince the market that the injury troubles that dogged him for much of his early career are in the past. Rodon has undergone shoulder surgery and Tommy John surgery in his career, and due to those injuries pitched just 232 1/3 innings at the Major League level over a four-year period (2017-20).

However, the former No. 3 overall pick returned to the White Sox on a one-year, $3MM deal in 2021 after being non-tendered, and broke out with one of the best seasons of any pitcher in the sport. Through mid-July in 2021, Rodon was the clear front-runner for American League Cy Young honors and quite arguably the most dominant pitcher in either league. Shoulder fatigue down the stretch dropped his velocity and relegated him to just six starts over the final two months, and durability concerns “limited” him to a two-year, $44MM deal with the Giants — one that allowed him to opt out of the contract after one season if he pitched at least 110 innings.

Rodon not only reached 110 innings — he dominated to the tune of a 2.88 ERA through a career-high 178 frames. He held his velocity late in the season, averaged better than 5 2/3 frames per start and took significant strides toward alleviating some durability concerns. He paced the National League in strikeouts this past season and has now turned in consecutive campaigns with a sub-3.00 ERA. Dating back to Opening Day 2021, he leads all Major League pitchers (min. 200 innings) with a 33.9% strikeout rate. He rejected a qualifying offer from the Giants, which may slightly impact his earning power, but that consideration shouldn’t be a major encumbrance for an in-his-prime, ace-caliber pitcher.

That’s especially true now, because with deGrom and Verlander off the market and little to no frontline starting pitchers clearly available in the trade market, demand for Rodon should be extra-steep. He can justifiably hold out for max years and/or dollars and go to the highest bidder, knowing that teams in need of an ace have no readily available alternative. Unlike Verlander, who surely prioritized signing with a win-now team due to his age, Rodon can consider a broader field of suitors. To this point in the offseason Rodon has drawn interest from as many as nine teams, with the Yankees, Dodgers, Mets, Rangers, Twins and Orioles among the team’s reported to be involved in his market to at least some extent.

I still think the Rangers end up signing him. He and deGrom will be a monster 1-2 punch for however long they can stay healthy. It would result in about $130M/yr being paid to 4 players (deGrom, Rodon, Semien and Seager) but the Rangers don’t seem to care. They want to build a perennial winner and having these 4 would be a pretty darn good basis for doing so.

The dude scares the crap out of me with his shoulder and elbow health history. He’s dominant when healthy, but if it was my checkbook, I don’t think I’d sign off on him as my top pitcher. If he’s your 2nd or 3rd starter and you don’t “need” him to be dominant/healthy to succeed, I’m all for it… but health is a big question on him.

Verlander is much more proven and a tier above Rondon. Even roughly 10 years older, Verlander has a better health history than Rondon.

If Rondon wants $30-$35m/year, he won’t get 6 years.

If not healthy, they’re “only” out $62mm on two starting pitchers. What are the odds that both stay healthy for an entire season? DeGrom’s contract stretches out to 39 years old and Rodon’s to 36 years old in your scenario. If Rangers do that they have absolutely no discipline. In your scenario, that is $835mm in contracts to 4 players. Four? For a team that is not very good. These type of contracts is what keeps bad teams bad for a long time.

It’s not about being “smart”. It’s just common sense that most GMs would not do this. Then again, some GMs in bad teams with deeper pockets do weird things out of desperation to try to save their jobs for short-term results at the expense of the long-term future of the club.

Well he’s good, but not so good that trading him is going to hurt for 20 years. He’s certainly replaceable and is probably better suited at 2nd, his bat is overly elite at 2nd and the defensive requirements are less which should increase his value there as well

If the Jays move him to 2nd, he’s never re signing. So…. Use the equity you have in him paired with Moreno and get a legit SS in FA and a Legit Ace through trade.

I mean look at what FA pitchers are valued at right now! Pretty sure the Crew plans to wait until the deadline to see where they’re at regardless. Either way, you can imagine you’d better start with Moreno, add Tiedemann, zulueta and Barger, and we’ll consider taking Bo. It would take a ridiculous offer to get Burnes or Woodruff.

If you are trading Burnes its to free yourself from Yellich. Unfortunately for the Brewers he’s the reason you won’t be keeping both Burnes and Woodruff long term.

Agents and the players association would not go for that at all.
Incentive bonuses are used in some contracts though. Bonuses for awards like MVP, CY Young are the most simple. With some pitching contacts, innings pitched is tied to option years like in the new Verlander contract where if JV pitches 140 innings in 2024 he will earn a player option for 35m to pitch in 2025. Rondon had an innings pitched level in his contract which he achieved thus allowed him to opt out of his contract and elect to free agency for a new contract.

Considering he’s only 30, bet his price went up too!

I wanted a six year deal too but my company said they only plan a quarter ahead in case they want to layoff people to make the stock price go up!

It is silly but think about the deals Jake and JV signed. The Rangers just popped 5 yrs/$185 to a 34 yr-old and the Mets 2/86 to a 40 yr-old. Meanwhile Rondon is just turning 30 and coming off two of best seasons. More than one team will offer him 6 yrs so it will take 7 to get a deal done. He’s the last shiny Ace toy on the shelf expect Boras to charge a premium and get it too. I do think its silly too, but its silly season in the MLB.

It’s interesting that the Dodgers and Mets use the same philosophy of crazy high, but short-term deals. This would seemingly imply Rodon isn’t going to those clubs.

VPH there is no way Rodon will go the Mets now. I think they made the right choice with Verlander. The Mets are spending now so they can both save $ later and save prospect capital as they build up a top-level minor league system.

Cardinals with their payroll should be a player. Nothing going on at the top of the order and the next pitching hopefuls from the farm in 24. Pay a drunk sailor price for SP upgrades or eek the NL Central. I doubt DeWitte decides to change his ways in his 17th season. He turns 82 next season. Focus of franchise lately is investment in Ballpark Village, a multifunctional dollar capturing enterprise to make rich people a little richer.

Seriously though. That is a LOT of cheddar for a dude who just tossed 178 innings. And with his injury history, it mind as well have been 378 innings.

Yeah warning signs in 21. First injury free season then poof, faded in August, velo dropped to the high 80s and not useful in the playoffs. Whoever signs him has to be prepared for load management. Be prepared to dink around in September-October

Based on this year’s market and his past two seasons that’s not a completely impossible goal… but six years for a guy with his injury history and rather overnight emergence as an ace?

I think he could maybe get more like 2 years/$75M or 3 years/$112M. And if the bidding war gets intense maybe 4 years/$150M.

I can’t see him getting 5 or 6 years guaranteed, even if he dropped his ask to a $27M-$29M AAV over the length of that contract.

There’s not much of a difference between desperation and ignorance. Considering his stats are pretty consistent between above/below .500; 1st,2nd,3rd time thru the order, 5 2/3 innings average by start is pretty much what’s expected out of a starter you could make the argument for a 6yr deal regardless of injury concerns.

It’s really dependent on where the team that signs him is positioned to compete and when or if it becomes a albatross.

IMO, VERY high risk, given his arm issues to go 6 years at *any* $ figure; $30M per seems like a big-time roll of the dice. Oh, BTW, small article fact check: Rodon did *not* lead the NL in Ks; Corbin Burnes led the league.

Boras will advise Rodon to hold out as long as possible to get the best deal available but if his client wants to just sign and get it over with, he will allow him to do so. If someone like the Rangers offer him 6/$180M soon, Boras will let the other teams know that he has an offer to his satisfaction and give them one last shot to make their best and final offer. If this is the case and Judge decides to wait out the market, then there will be no consolation prize of Rodon for the Yankees or the Giants. He’ll be long gone by then.

Could do 5 @ $28M per, with opt-out after one and/or two years, and a club option for the sixth, with a buyout of $10M.

Thus, either he gets the sixth year or the buyout, which brings his 5-years to $30MM. And he has the benefits of opt-outs if he has another good year or two.

The Braves, Phillies, and Mets playing one another are definitely replacing the Yankees and Red Sox playing one another as what
    fans nationally will be following.

The NL East has had the Rays and Jays that competed, but few
actually bought into them. And I firmly believe the O’s will be
better than all of them within the next 1-3 years….but they won’t
get the respect….the narrative will be that the Yankees and Red
    Sox did it wrong.

It’s steep, but the richest franchises can afford it. It’s $144M less than Cashman foolishly gave to Cole.

That’s not to say it would be a good contract, but they could absorb it.

The Giants saw him all season. It’s always noted that Farhan doesn’t go for multi-year contracts (unless it’s for Judge). Giants have the room to offer Rodon a 4-6 yr contract, but they are always an afterthought in listing teams in the serious chase for signing him. Are they not seriously pursuing b/c they know his medical so well—and something gives them pause for a 4-6 yr contract? He was said to be irritated with Giants several times during the season b/c of the defensive limitations behind him, and how the BP lost blew games after he left with a lead and a potential win. And, there are other teams with more realistic playoff potential. So, maybe there is a serious mutual disinterest in a return.

Six years doesn’t seem too unreasonable for a 30yo pitcher. $30MM AAV does seem unreasonable though, given his history. 6/140 maybe?

6/180m for Rodon is utterly absurd. Two excellent years but only a 155 inning average.
Long injury history. A 5th and 6th in Cy voting, not 1st and 3rd. Not even a 6 inning guy.

Zack Wheeler wasn’t quite as good, but was more durable, was clearly underperforming with a bad Mets organization, had a clearer recovery path, was clearly thoroughly recovered from TJ when the Phillies went out on a limb to give him 5/116m after seasons of 182 and 195 innings. .
