Red Sox Have “Momentum” With Xander Bogaerts

By Darragh McDonald | December 7, 2022 at 1:15pm CDT

1:15pm: Abraham tweets that there is “momentum” between Bogaerts and the Sox.

11:40am: The Red Sox and shortstop Xander Bogaerts are meeting this morning, according to Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe. The sides are in “heavy discussions,” according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post.

Bogaerts, of course, has spent his entire career with the Sox thus far, having been signed as an amateur back in 2009. He worked his way up to the majors by 2013 and had a tremendous breakout season in 2015, firmly establishing himself as the club’s shortstop. He’s held down that job ever since, making at least 134 starts at short in each full season from 2015 onwards, as well as 52 starts in 2020.

Bogaerts signed an extension with the club in 2019, which was generally considered to be very team-friendly. It had the potential to keep Bogaerts in Boston through 2026, though it also afforded him the opportunity to opt out after 2022. Bogaerts just continued to mash in the four years since that extension was signed, hitting 82 home runs and producing an overall batting line of .304/.376/.503 from 2019 through 2022. That level of production has made it clear for some time that Bogaerts would opt out, which is perhaps why the Sox went out and grabbed Trevor Story in free agency a year ago. The club reportedly made a feeble attempt at another Bogaerts extension back in April, but that went nowhere and Bogaerts eventually opted out.

Boston’s chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom has continued to insist that retaining Bogaerts is a priority for the club, despite Bogaerts seemingly getting stronger interest from other clubs like the Padres, Cubs, Phillies and Diamondbacks. However, it’s possible that there is now some more urgency towards a reunion. As Abraham notes, there was a call last night between Boston’s owners and executives, with the contents of that conversation perhaps leading to today’s meetings.

Bogaerts entered free agency as one of the “big four” shortstops, alongside Carlos Correa, Trea Turner and Dansby Swanson. Turner has already come off the board, securing an 11-year, $300MM deal with the Phillies. MLBTR predicted that Bogaerts would get $189MM over seven years, or $27MM per season. However, the market has generally been strong so far this offseason, with most players beating their projections, sometimes significantly.

The Sox have primarily been active in the relief market so far, adding Kenley Jansen, Chris Martin and Joely Rodriguez to their bullpen. Those deals have brought their 2023 payroll to $157MM, per Roster Resource, with a competitive balance tax calculation of $177MM. The Sox paid the luxury tax this year but would still be shy of next year’s $233MM threshold even if they added close to $30MM on a Bogaerts deal. However, by going over in 2022, they’ve dented their compensation if Bogaerts signs elsewhere. Since he received and rejected a qualifying offer, the Red Sox would get a draft pick if he joined another team but their CBT payor status bumps that pick to after the fourth round when it would have been just before the third round otherwise.

In the event a deal does get done, it’s likely that the club would use a similar infield mix to last year with Xander at short, Story at second and Devers at third. Devers is entering his walk year, meaning it’s possible that a similar “will they get it done” situation plays out next year with him instead of Bogaerts. For 2023 though, a Bogaerts signing would likely push Enrique Hernández back into center field on a full-time basis, lessening the club’s need to worry about that spot.

It depends. If the red sox were truly serious, an in person meeting today would be a full court press with HENRY attending.

That kind of effort and personal attention may start to heal the bridge a bit from everything bloom did wrong in the last 12 months with Bogey.

Bogaerts has been such a class act it’s not out side the realm of possibility he could be going just to tell them in person he’s moving on.

I’m hoping they resign him, and honestly Henry & co. have always had a weakness when it comes to their image which has taken significant damage since the deadline. If they can resign him, in some part it likely will be due to media coverage (ie Judge), free agents signing elsewhere (“insert any and all FA name here”) and the addition by not subtracting press release.

Maybe this thread is a good place to relocate JoeBrady’s request in an older thread….

What is Bogey worth to each of you?

      I said $196/7 with up to three consecutive joint options, 2030 – 24m/14m, 2031 20m/10m, and 2032 16m/6m.

I also threw in escalators for PAs 250k, hrs 250k, mvp voting 500k, gg 500k, silver slugger 500k.

I wouldn’t go a dime over 6/135m outside Fenway. It’s always scary signing Boston hitting FA’s. The numbers always go down if it’s a neutral or pitching friendly park.

It’s not my money and I don’t work in the front office so I’m not that concerned with going that deep into the particulars. It’s clear based on the free agent market he is worth more than the $20 million per year he was signed for, so give him a raise to the $25-30 range and how ever many years it takes to keep him in Boston for life. I guess from a value perspective 5-6 years at that rate would be ideal so you can bring him back for cheaper if he plays out his late 30s which would presumably be decline years. But if he wants 7 or 8 I wouldn’t let that get in the way of retaining the face of the organization.

I am a lifelong Sox fan and although I don’t live in Mass anymore still watch, depending on what time has allowed, between 100-150 games a year via MLB TV, attend all the games while they are here playing the in-market team where I now live, and still make it back to Boston to catch a game or two a year at Fenway. I do this to watch players like Bogey, who is one of my all time favorites, not to watch Henry save a few bucks or to watch Bloom tout the latest prospect rankings, So if they’re going to play cheap on our star players and fan favorites, I might have to start responding in-kind.

10/300, to make him a Boston lifer. It’s stupid money, but as Pedro says, he carries a torch for the team. If he goes, Devers probably goes next year.

I’m sure they would eventually find success with other stars, but thats a lot of unique-feeling branding to the fans that gets lost.

That was literally what chaim’s extension offer did, and, it was an insult.

They should also apologize for blowing up the locker room and demoralizing the team with the Vaz trade which didn’t do anything for the salary cap. If, IF, you do something like that you have the guts to have a team meeting with guys right when you call Vaz into the office to tell him about being traded, in person. There’s a right way to do things like that, and, a wrong way.

My guess is that since Bogaerts loves playing in Boston so much, he agreed to meet with Boston once he had an offer from another team that he was willing to accept. While that goes against Boras’s philosophy, he will respect whatever his clients ask of him. This is probably the one and only chance for Boston to step up to the plate and re-sign him if they are truly willing to do so. I’d expect an announcement by the end of the week on Bogaerts. Hopefully, the Sox step up to the plate and pay him what he’s worth but I’m not overly optimistic they will get a deal done. I’m sure the Padres are in the mix somehow here and perhaps the Giants too. It’s going to take a 7 year deal to retain him.

Half joking maybe, why would Bogaerts take a five year deal when other teams will offer at least seven years unless the AAV is spiked up. It may not need to be 40M a year for 5 but it would need to be at least 37M a year.

The starting rotation is still a mess. but bringing back Eovaldi would be a mistake, He’s an above average pitcher but he can’t stay healthy. Velocity and K rate was down last season. Gave up 20 HRs in just over 100 innings.

Not saying he can’t come back but his history says otherwise. Time to move on and not repeat the same mistakes. If they give him a contract with expecting that they’ll get what he did last season and anything over that is a bonus then he’s your guy. If they’re going to give money expecting 2021 stats then they will be disappointed.

          Who is a great question.

The ownership has always been swinging to one extreme to the other, and General spend in bunches; Gonzales & Crawford after 2010, Ramirez, Sandoval and Porcello after 2014, Price & Kimbrel after 2015. I think they are trying to change the “Cheap now, overspend later”. Since they are pressed up against the cap or over cap 5 out last 6 years, it’s tough to spread out signings. But, as time goes on, and more payroll roll off books and prospect begin to hit big leagues, im expecting FA signings to spread out.

True, GM. They are hearing the disgruntled rumblings of Sox fans – at least they are being attentive. I’m sure there are deals on her table for XB from competing teams, too. I’m glad they’re meeting, but I question the sincerity of the Sox willingness to sign XB.

I think XB is to the Sox what Wilfork was to the Pats – important.

You act like the “fans” have more knowledge/skill/resources at GMing than people who’s job it is. Doing what the fans say, instead what the experts say, is the road to ruin.

    Remaining wishlist:
    – Bogaerts/Correa
    – Devers extension
    – Taylor Rogers if cheap (Lefty to the pen)
    – Noah Syndergaard as a 2 year flier but I’d even lock him up for up to 4 years depending on $$$ and expect him to be a #3 type with upside and risk
    – Justin Turner one year deal (leadership, righty bat, revolving DH, 3B, 1B)
    – Vazquez back… as good as Wong and McGuire were at the end of the season I don’t think I trust that over a full season.
    – make a surprise trade splash for a middle of the order bat

Interesting. In my original top-11 wish list, I also had Bogaerts, Rogers, Syndergaard & Turner. With the Jansen signing, Rogers becomes a luxury, but at the right price, I’ still be okay.

The only place we differ is that, if we re-sign Bogaerts, I’d give serious thought to signing Turner and dealing Devers. Two years from now, Bogaerts could be our 3B.

Signing Bogey and extending Devers would win back some Sox fans and give us a solid window of competing, which looked to be closing. Not too sure Bloom cares about either of those things. Hoping we can get those two signings done plus add an OF, SP and C.

“ As Abraham notes, there was a call last night between Boston’s owners and executives, with the contents of that conversation perhaps leading to today’s meetings.”

This sheds light on what many Sox fans have been saying about Bloom being a puppet of ownership’s decisions. Henry and co are a lot more hands on than other owners, especially having a young guy like Bloom as PBO.

Devers can’t play defense and is an inconsistent hitter batting in the middle of a great offense that allows his numbers to be exaggerated. Lets see what Devers numbers look like when Bogaerts and JD are gone. He’ll still be a butcher at 3B who swings for the fences in every at bat and a selfish ball player. He’s highly over rated and should be traded while people still think he has a big future. Baseball is won with good pitching and defense. Devers doesn’t fit into that equation.

He’s not as good as Yordan Alvarez so he shouldn’t expect more than what Alvarez got. Let him try Free Agency. It should jolt his ego back to reality.

Devers might be the slugger Texas, the Phillies, the Giants or some other club might find interesting. The Giants sound like they have the capital to ink Devers long term after missing Judge.
The Sox need more starting pitchers along with perhaps 1 or 2 pen arms.

@MadMac – Devers will only be 27 when he becomes a free agent. He’s going to require a 10 year deal in order to sign with anyone. Devers is also looking for $30M+ per year. Hopefully they can talk him down to $27M/yr or so but after the contracts signed this year so far, I can see multiple teams willing to go 10/$300M+ for him next year. He’s going to be a tough sign for Boston.

Lmfao. Correa played less games than Bogey over their careers and crushed him in WAR per season. Last 2 seasons Correa was a better hitter than Bogey. He is also a great defensive shortstop while Bogey has been no better than meh in any season. Way below average for his career. Plus he is 2 years younger.

My wife is the biggest Red Sox honk I know, she owns and wears a Bogey jersey, and even she doesn’t think Bogey is as good as Correa

Notice I never said anything about more war. I said I believe his contract will age poorly, he is injury prone, and, a lying cheating dirtbag.

Bogey will cost both less money, and less years. That let’s you buy other players that would add to the overall war total of the team with your money savings, and, a shorter contract inherently carries less risk independent of the Correa related variables.

At 7/189 Xander is exactly the kind of deal the Os should go after. He will likely exceed 200 so I know the Os are out but a .300 hitter with a career obp over 350 to plug into the lineup is exactly what is needed. Henderson at 3rd, Urias or Mateo at 2nd with the other as super utility. Westburg and Ortiz as trade capital for pitching

If you were Bogaerts and you saw the Red Sox fire Dombrowski who brought a championship to Boston, hire a TB exec with next to no experience who gets rid of Mookie in his first move, then Benny and now JD, Eovaldi and possibly him would you resign with Boston for well below market value?

    No!!

As much as Bogaerts loves Boston the environment is toxic so he’s better off going to a team that has a shot at winning a ring. Boston won’t be in a position to win a division for years. He’ll probably be retired before Boston will recover from Bloom.

Take a deal with LAD and spend the rest of your career with Mookie trying to win rings not languishing in the cellar of the AL East.

Madmc44 – Why Devers? Bogaerts is a more complete player. Deal Devers and fill two spots. Devers is a liability at 3B in his 20s. Do you think that will get better? No way. His .936 fielding percentage is peaking. How scary and pathetic is that!!

The Yoshida move reduces payroll by $19MM. Clearly, Bloom isn’t invested in the former Dombrowski players. He’s remaking the team into his image. A cheap under performing group of ball players.
