The Orioles are staying at Camden Yards for the foreseeable future, as Orioles chairman John Angelos and Maryland Governor Wes Moore announced this evening. The organization, the state of Maryland, and the Maryland Stadium Authority have agreed upon a new lease that will keep the Orioles in Baltimore for another 30 years. Per Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner, the deal includes two five-year extension options that could extend the terms of the lease into the 2060s.
The news brings to an end negotiations regarding the Orioles’ future in Baltimore. The club first moved into Camden Yards back in 1992 on a 30-year lease that was set to expire just three months from now, at the end of the 2023 calendar year. The Orioles held a five-year extension option on the club’s current lease but declined to exercise it this past February with the goal of reaching an agreement on a longer-term deal later in the year. That goal has now been achieved, though the specific terms of the deal between the club, the local stadium authority, and the state are currently unknown, with full details on the lease expected on Friday.
Angelos had previously been reported to be seeking additional funding and public land in the stadium deal as recently as last month, with Angelos reportedly interested in replicating The Battery in Atlanta, which houses not only the Braves’ Truist Park but a complex of various commercial and residential uses including apartments, restaurants, shops, and event spaces. Complicating those desires is the agreement the Maryland Stadium Authority has in place with the Baltimore Ravens, which contains a clause requiring parity between the Ravens and Orioles regarding the terms of their respective leases.
While it’s unclear if any of the funding or land Angelos was seeking is part of the new lease agreement, it’s worth noting that at the time of the report, sources indicated to The Baltimore Banner that the Orioles would not receive the land and funding they were seeking, and Kostka now reports that plans for a Battery-style development in Baltimore were taken off the table. Regardless of the final terms of the agreement, Kostka notes that the new lease will unlock $600MM worth of state-financed bonds that the Orioles will be able to use to renovate the ballpark in the coming years.
With negotiations regarding potential relocation and stadium renovations nearing varying conclusions in Oakland (or rather, Las Vegas), Tampa, and now Baltimore, MLB continues to clear the way for a potential expansion effort in the coming years. That said, there are still teams that have expressed a willingness to move out of their current stadium: in recent weeks, comments from both Brewers owner Mark Attanasio and White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf have indicated a desire to secure public funding for stadium renovations in the future.

It would have been a shame to see Camden yards sit vacant or become a minor league park had Angelos got his way. This is great to see.
MagicOriole
I mean if Angelos wanted that, that’s what would’ve happened. He deserves a lot of blame for a lot. Not this.
BaseballisLife
Angelos got his way. It’s why the Orioles will be staying for the next 30 years.
BrianStrowman9
Angelos doesn’t have much liquidity and MLB didn’t support a move. He eventually got what he could but certainly not what he really wanted. There’s no public land donation coming his way.

If he still wants the land, he will just have to buy it with his own money.

Land also has to be for sale to buy.

I think expansion is more likely. 2 deserving cities right there though.
BaseballisLife
One of the two will get a team.
Beff Jagwell
I hope both get a team. Would be nice to have SLC too but I’m not sure the market is big enough for a baseball team. I could be wrong though.
SocoComfort
As a Braves fan it’s nice to have a monopoly on the south which no other southern team has in other sports. New Orleans was always a city that I found intriguing for MLB to expand into. Nashville has shown to be a good sports town with their teams including their soccer club.
Beff Jagwell
I don’t think N.O. would be a good baseball city honestly, at least not for MLB. Good in theory, but probably not in practice.
websoulsurfer
One expansion team in south and one on west coast.
Beff Jagwell
Absolutely no more on the west coast, they have too many as it is. Charlotte, Nashville, etc are better options as there is a greater chance to draw from fans outside of their immediate region. West coast is saturated with teams and limited additional markets due to population density of geographical regions.
Brian 38
Yeah, the Braves will be the hurdle for Charlotte and Nashville. Braves won’t give up the revenues easily as seen with the O’s/Nats “agreement”.
But at a league level, it just makes sense to tap into those markets. I forget who has a minor league team in Charlotte now, but that stadium is beautiful with the skyline in the background of RF.
PiratesFan1981
Why go by population density? It hasn’t done much for several teams. The MLB should look at location geographically. Use Arlington Rangers as example to brand an expansion team. MLB needs more west coast teams because the east is too clustered together. Salt Lake, Portland, Vancouver, or even Dallas are some cities that come to mind with ideal locations to draw in fans. You may laugh at Salt Lake idea, but they have casinos like Vegas and geographically, a brilliant location to draw crowds in surrounding areas of Utah. It was once a thriving city and still can be once it gets national attention again. They are surround by bodies of water and can flourish in city size and population. I think Salt Lake would be a brilliant place to brand an expansion team. OKC is another one but may struggle with Arlington, Kansas City, St Louis, and now Vegas in the mid-west regions. Who knows, OKC probably could pull it off and have a solid foundation for an MLB team. Oklahoma City Steers 🙂
BaseballisLife
Portland is a bigger market than Nashville and within 100k of Charlotte.
Salt Lake Valley is bigger than 4 existing MLB markets.
MLB should put a team in Portland.
KingOmar
Shame on you. Portland sucks because of its housing crisis. It is not lawless.
Pads Fans
Portland and either Nashville or Charlotte. I think Nashville has a leg up on Charlotte because it already has an organization pushing for a team there. Dombrowski used to be part of that group.
Pads Fans
Brian, It’s not quite the same. Nashville is a 4+ hour drive to Atlanta. Baltimore is 40 miles from DC.
Pads Fans
That may be the dumbest thing I have seen posted here today. Portland is both beautiful and growing as a city, its GDP per capita is exploding, and the crime rate is not in the top 100 cities in the US. Of teams that currently have MLB teams or that are in consideration for one it would not rank in the top 20 in crime.
There is no organization named ANTIFA. It literally means anti-fascist, which the entire US should be. We fought two wars over it and defeated fascism both times. If you are not anti-fascist, that says a huge amount about you as a person. Hitler lovers are not welcome in my world.
Please take your ignorant, bigotted diatribes elsewhere.
Brian 38
Pads Fans – I realize that. I live in Baltimore and have family in TN, MS, AL, SC, FL, and GA.
The Braves have had that market for decades. Multiple teams have been in and out of DC in that same time. TBS brought the Charlotte market to Atlanta when the superstations started their growth as early cable mover. Baltimore never had that same type of footprint much past NOVA. Once you get south of Richmond, I bet there are more Braves fans than Nats fans even now. My main point is more that Atlanta will have to be bought out like Baltimore was when the Expos moved to DC. Maybe not the same degree, but the same direction.
Pads Fans
Portland is pretty awesome. Especially compared to other large cities I travel to. The housing crisis is hitting everywhere. Corporate ownership of single family homes and the fact that new housing is just not being built is driving up prices. In one area of San Diego 30% of all housing units, houses and apartments, are owned by 5 companies. Those 5 companies control the entire market and can set any price they want for housing. 4 of those companies used to be major builders. Now they just buy up the existing housing and drive up the prices.
Lanidrac
Does Florida not count as part of the South because their terrible attendance isn’t a threat to the Braves’ monopoly?
But what about Texas?
Lanidrac
There’s still Portland as a good-sized market on the West coast. Plus, I think MLB would prefer not to have both expansion teams in the same region.
Pads Fans
Everytime I am in Nashville I try to catch a Sounds game and half the caps in the stands are Braves.
Atlanta doesn’t own the broadcast rights to Nashville like the Orioles have in in DC since 1983. They won’t have to be bought out in that regard. But the new Nashville major league team will definitely have to win over all the lifelong Braves fans in the area.
One of my clients is in Baltimore a few blocks away from Camden Yards. They were afraid they would lose their lease from the state in this whole deal. Looks like they will be staying there a while longer at least.
Lanidrac
The Orioles had to make agreements with the Nationals only due to sharing the same metro area.
The Braves have no territory rights outside the Atlanta metro area, let alone in other states; save for areas where their games get blacked out on some national TV broadcasts, and even those territories are often shared by up to as many as 6 different teams.
Lanidrac
There are some effects to drawing from a larger regional area like with the Rockies, but it’s usually a very small effect. Most MLB attendance comes from residents in the metro area or tourists. Besides, most Utahns care a lot more about basketball (NBA, WNBA, or college) and college football than they do about baseball. I know, because my mother grew up there, my sister and her family live there, and I have a lot of extended family living there with biannual family reunions.
In what world is Nashville on the East coast? It’s specifically the South that has grown the fastest and deserves at least one of the upcoming expansion teams.
Dallas isn’t big enough for another team with the Rangers right next door. San Antonio, maybe?
Speaking of which, they are called the Texas Rangers, not the Arlington Rangers, for a very good reason! They even went to the trouble of getting a well-deserved exemption to continue to reference that special law enforcement agency after MLB made the rule that you can only use the state name for your team if it’s the only team in the state (which is why the Marlins changed their name).
Lanidrac
No, Salt Lake City’s MSA ranks 46th in the U.S., well below the current smallest market with a team, Milwaukee, at #40.
Lanidrac
No matter how far “Braves’ Country” stretches, they still have no legal right to block anything beyond the Atlanta metro area. They didn’t need to buy out the Cardinals to start putting other teams west of the Mississippi, especially in Kansas City, did they? They didn’t even need the Braves’ permission to put teams in Florida.
How many Braves fans in Nashville or Charlotte would switch loyalties if they got their own teams remains to be seen, but the Braves still can’t do anything about it if MLB wants to expand over there.
Pads Fans
He is talking about TV market. Nielsen DMA specifically which measures the number of TV households in a market. Population is really not a consideration for MLB teams.
The Salt Lake market is #30 and is larger than KC (#34), Cincinnati(#36), and Milwaukee#37). Not sure where he got the 4 number unless he was including Las Vegas at #40.
Nashville is 29th and about 2k more TV households than SLC, Charlotte is 22nd, and Portland is 21st.
Most people don’t realize that the Salt Lake Valley stretches south all the way to Provo while the MSA only includes towns as far south as Murray.
BaseballisLife
TV is a bigger part of most team’s revenue than attendance and is certainly as important as population in choosing where expansion teams will be placed.
The Salt Lake TV market is so much more than just the city. It’s really one city from Provo to Bountiful.
Its a large market and one of the fastest growing in the nation.
PiratesFan1981
I seriously like the idea of Salt Lake and Portland or Vancouver being expansions. Then reconfigure the divisions so cities in the west are actually in the west. Central is actually in the central and east teams are east. Maybe add the south by reducing divisions teams to 4 with 2 wild card teams. Top 2 team gets a bye in a best of 3 series in WC round.
James Midway

Know something about the game before making such half baked insults jagwell. Boston did indeed go 20+y a few times the last century betwwen WS appearences, during that time there were no advantages of having 2+ divisions much of the time, much less wild cards.. 1 team went, no playoffs until the 70’s rolled around.
Failure teams? Let’s start with Seattle, which has been around since 1977, wild card advantage since 2k, 3 divisions since 90’s and -0- WS chances.

Beff Jagwell;
Yankees and Red Sox fans are the worst in MLB. Just entitled, spoiled, demanding, classless loudmouths.
MLB bylaws have changed so their teams can’t buy contention and championships anymore. The field is pretty much leveled. Their FO and fans don’t know enough about the sport to even compete.
Keep in mind that those 2 teams finished in last and 2nd last place in the AL East this year, and a turnaround is hardly in the near future for either. And what do their fans demand? – A new FO head, a new manager, and to buy a bunch of big name free agents by giving hem 6-10 year-contracts.

“Imagine if Manny was still there.”
The only way they would have won with him is if he were permanently on the IL and was not allowed in the park to mingle with the Orioles players….
Not to mention that Kramer (13-5) was the winning pitcher tonight.
BrianStrowman9
Gunnar is a better ball player than Manny now. We are in fact better off with Dean Kremer at this point. MM was never going to get $300MM from the O’s nor was he going to sit through the rebuild.
I have good memories of Machado though. He was a good ball player and we won more games with him than we did for a long time without him. Played stellar D for us at 3B. His last year, he was being selfish, trying to play SS. But he also embraced playing 3B for a long time for us when he was one of the top SS’s coming up. & even the year he wanted to play SS it was over Tim Beckham…..
Can’t really blame him for thinking he was a better option.

People have a distorted memory of the Angelos family spending habits. Do some research. They’ve carried top pay rolls and for a long time were consistently middle of the pack. Just spent it on the wrong players outside of 96 and 97 and the 2012 to 2016 teams which ended with them spending on the wrong player. They aren’t as cheap as people think. Never have been. Actually this time being cheap has been the smart choice lol I guarantee if Adley and Henderson and GRod etc want to be locked up they will get it done. Also, spoiler. Not spending big of FA’s last season was the right choice not the cheap choice.

these billionaires need to pay for their own ballpark instead of asking taxpayers to build them one when they don’t get any shares of ownership of the park
Samuel
Agree.
But consider this:
Those parks may be secured with some tax money, but their primarily financed by the sale of long-term government bonds. During the course of a season if you look at your ticket stub (most people here that pot and complain don’t buy tickets to MLB games) you’ll see that a good portion of he cost is for a city tax. So it means that funds are going back to the city to pay down the bonds and any money the city fronted for the construction of the park.
The same thing goes for major construction upgrades for public parks.
One other thing: most of those parks are also used for entertainment events as well, and again – a percentage of the revenue from tickets sold goes back to the city. So it’s not just the sports team that’s using the park.
When you check this out and realize what I wrote is accurate, please explain it to AOC and the other juvenile demagogues in Congress that don’t understand how public buildings, airports, etc, are financed. Speak slowly and use lots of pictures and diagrams (it’s best to have little comic symbols on them) – after all, most of them have degrees from American colleges in the past 30-40 years. Most of all – be patient. Think 4th grade.

Baltimore fans are getting there but as a lifetime fan, I’ve been surprised that there haven’t been more sellouts even in light of the exciting stretch run as the Rays are for real and certainly did not lose to let the O’s in the backdoor.
I hope next year will continue to return, of Angelo’s doesn’t hike ticket prices too high like he intimated when he was talking about extending the youth.
