Chicago Notes: White Sox, Cubs, McCarthy, Junis

By Mark Polishuk | February 11, 2024 at 9:32am CDT

The White Sox acquired outfielder Dominic Fletcher in a trade with the Diamondbacks last week, though the deal may have been something of an either-or proposition.  According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Sox had the option of picking either Fletcher or Jake McCarthy in the deal, with pitching prospect Cristian Mena still headed back to the D’Backs as the return piece in the one-for-one trade.

Fletcher and McCarthy share a similar profile as 26-year-old, left-handed hitting outfielders who can play any of the three positions on the grass.  McCarthy was the 39th overall pick of the 2018 draft and has more Major League experience, with a .261/.331/.380 slash line over 736 plate appearances in the Show.  A fourth-place finish in NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2022 seemed to hint at McCarthy’s potential as a building block for the Snakes, yet a tough 2023 season saw him relegated to the minors and then to the Diamondbacks’ bench as the year developed.  Arizona’s willingness to move on from either player and the Southsiders’ decision to take Fletcher provides some interesting wrinkles to this trade, and it might be interesting to revisit this deal in a few years’ time once we see how the careers of Fletcher, McCarthy, and Mena have developed.

Here’s more from the Windy City’s two teams…

  • Though the top four in the Cubs rotation seems set and several candidates are vying for the fifth starter’s job, Jakob Junis “recently” drew some interest from Wrigleyville, as per The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma.  The depth of the interest isn’t known, though it might’ve been something of a due diligence move by the Cubs since no formal offer was made.  Junis’ experience as a swingman means that he wouldn’t have necessarily even been in the rotation, so the Cubs could’ve been looking at Junis to bolster the bullpen and also add even more depth to the starting mix.  In any case, Junis is no longer an option, as the right-hander signed a one-year, $7MM contract with the Brewers last week.
  • In another piece from Mooney and Sharma, they look at the Cubs’ unsettled third base situation.  Patrick Wisdom and Nick Madrigal seem poised to get the bulk of playing time, with Christopher Morel getting the occasional start at the hot corner, and Miles Mastrobuoni or rookie Luis Vazquez providing further depth.  There’s enough uncertainty here that Mooney/Sharma feel the Cubs might again make a trade deadline move at the position, akin to their deal for Jeimer Candelario this past summer.  Of course, the Cubs have also been linked to Matt Chapman this winter if the team still had a bigger-ticket free agent upgrade in mind, though a longer-term answer might block top prospect Matt Shaw, who has been working out as a third baseman this offseason.
  • Reports surfaced last month that the White Sox were speaking with development company Related Midwest about the potential of building a new ballpark on a portion of land in Chicago’s South Loop area.  Related Midwest recently released a series of artist renderings to media (including MLB.com’s Scott Merkin) about what this new stadium and the associated “ballpark village” area might look like alongside the Chicago River, as well as some proposed renderings of how the area around Guaranteed Rate Field could be developed if the Sox moved to a new site.  Obviously a lot of hurdles still have to be crossed with the White Sox, developers, civic and state officials, and many other parties before this proposed ballpark could become a reality, and the earliest possible opening date would seem to be 2030, since the team’s lease at Guaranteed Rate Field runs through the 2029 season.

The Illinois Sports Facility Authority still owes $50 million paying off the Sox current dump. The governor of Illinois doesn’t believe in tax dollars being used on a private entity. After hearing him say that and knowing he struggles with the truth, looks like the taxpayers are building Jerry Reinsdorf a second ballpark

Oldguy, Jim Thompson GOP, was responsible for the taxpayers paying for Reinsdorfs current ballpark. And former GOP Gov Geo Ryan responsible for the ‘early retirement debt’ created In Illinois.
Just for the record – Pritzker had his hands in neither.

Sox fan Jim Thompson pulled the plug to stop the clock before midnight to get a deal done. What I’m saying is Reinsdorf will have a second park paid for by the taxpayers. He has a sweetheart deal where he gets every penny from the bar across the street that the state built and he failed to develop anything where the old park was because he gets every penny from parking cars in that lot. Same strategy as last time of “I’ll move the team to another state”. Sure you will Jerry. Plus the current Dem Governor JB Pritzker who can’t be trusted, only since you mentioned parties, after hinting that he won’t, will fund it with tax dollars and he personally will find a way to profit from it

Thanks to JB, now when your car is burglarized sitting in the parking lot while you’re watching a game, and the suspect is caught. The suspect will be out of jail and back on the streets to do more damage before the 7th inning stretch.

The Safe-T Act that he approved and signed off on, is everything BUT safe.

Yea that darn scoundrel who made off with $50 of crap out of your car definitely deserves to rot in jail because he can’t afford bail, whereas the white collar crook who steals millions should get to relax at home because bail is pennies to him. I know which one is a bigger threat to society and it’s not the guy busting out windows.

Given that white collar crime by its description is non-violent and much less common than ‘blue collar” crime per capita, one can argue fairly enough that widespread blue collar crime may indeed be a bigger threat to society.

As ‘small crimes” are ignored, the social trust that binds society breaks down.

“It is essential to the idea of a law that it be attended with a sanction; or in other words, a penalty or punishment for disobedience. If there be no penalty annexed to disobedience, the resolutions or commands which pretend to be laws will, in fact, amount to nothing more than advice or recommendation.” — Alexander Hamilton

@Mike I do agree all criminals should be in jail unfortunately bail has nothing to do with criminals since they’ve yet to have a trial. So in your opinion people should rot in jail for the crime of being too poor to afford bail before ever even having the opportunity to defend themselves in a court of law, how very authoritarian of you.

You should have a card tied to your social security and crimes you commit should cost you more money to access goods

And if you accrue a certain amount of crimes you should be put into reflection time on an island away from a society. Adult time out.

I think that’s where the ballpark village angle helps Jerry with more public funding. If it was just only a stadium, there is no way the city would help him out again, but with the many other revenue sources to be developed along with the stadium(housing space, office space, retail space, etc.), there’s more incentive for the city to support it.

Not gonna happen. Even true WSox fans like myself who live on the SSIDE (Bridgeport) would never and will never pay for Jerry’s park.
And we all know Jerry ain’t paying for anything, not in his nature.
So it’s all lovely and dreamy but D.O.A.
And btw, G Rate Field is anything but a dump twit. It’s beautiful inside, it’s the area around the park that sucks.

Athletic writers just throw names out there. The pair get fans all excited about signing players, then when player sign elsewhere, it promotes fan hostility towards Management. Today Athletic Cub writers are saying, Management needs to be more open minded towards Boras clients. Is it possible Management is being open minded, just not to the liking of Athletic writers?

For some reason David Ross would bench him the day after he hit for a “Homerun run cycle” including a walk off slam. Plus if he gets the chance. I can get my Morelquez jersey. I wouldn’t be able to put 54 on the back since #4 is taken by Canario. I would figure something out. With my luck Morel would be traded a year after I get a custom jersey.

The reason why a couple of you have never heard of these players is because you are not true baseball fans..Any “Real” Baseball fan has heard of Fletcher and McCarthy..Being a baseball fan is not just about Judge, Trout or Ohtani..Both of these guys have been on the D-backs 26 man MLB roster..Being a true Baseball fan is knowing about entire rosters of players and even their minor league prospects, not just the stars..If it upsets you that much or you can’t handle news about lesser known players, then leave and go get your real entertainment from such things as The American Dog Show…

Let’s cool it with the speech about who is a real fan or not. I am a very knowledgeable fan but there is no right or wrong way to be a fan. Yes saying things like some of the commenters here have said are stupid but so are your comments.

The White Sox chose a potential GG caliber defender in Fletcher. He’ll help to protect a questionable rotation.

Not only does Fletcher have better defense than McCarthy, he’s a better rounded player. Several of McCarthy’s tools project as below average. MLB.com has never included him in the Dbacks top 30 prospects for good reason.

Mena has upside but he’s shown next to nothing in the minors. There should have never been a choice.

Actually, McCarthy was their 8th ranked player in 2019.
      That’s not never.
Also MLB.com’s rankings are widely perceived to be a joke in the industry

That’s my mistake. I also noticed that right after posting. I’m still of the opinion that he’s a two tool player.

FYI, the MLB itself utilizes the pipeline’s top 100 list (their own resource), in addition to BA and ESPN when handing out the prospect promotion draft picks:

“If a player who was rated as a preseason Top 100 prospect by MLB Pipeline, Baseball America, and/or ESPN (at least two of the three) and was on his team’s Opening Day roster goes on to win the Rookie of the Year Award, the club is awarded a Prospect Promotion Incentive pick after the first round.”

That’s a direct quote from the 2024 draft order on MLB.com

I think I would have chose Fletcher as well. He had a nice, albeit short stint in the majors last year. I’m curious to see if he adds some more “pop” to his game.

He’s a small dude but appears to have good power for a guy his size. The Sox have been near MLB worst in RF for like 15 years straight, like they haven’t even had someone who can field the position much less hit, so as long as he is not god awful he will be a massive improvement. Yet Sox are so bad it hardly matters.

Yeah even if he doesn’t have massive power I think he can still be a really nice addition. Maybe a Nick Markakis type?

I am guessing the Snakes will trade McCarthy when teams are adjusting rosters/filling injury voids at the end of spring training.

With Dru Jones proposed to be ready for the ML in 2025, your right It would not surprise me if McCarthy is moved to another team.

The stadium renderings look too nice for the White Sox fan base. They’re content in their grittiness and squalor shtick. They’ll say things like it’s too yuppie, there isn’t enough space to park to play cornhole, and it’s too close to the city where people actually bathe and get haircuts.
Just improve their existing dump and fence it off from the rest of the city

White Sock stadium is arguably the best venue in all of baseball, so you missed that small detail.

Also read the above quote that I posted

I’m a Sox fan, and this is utterly ridiculous comment, as was your quote above. I’m sure 3 people gave thumbs up to each of them too, as if that’s possible.

Reread the quote, augusto. And you must be right- they must just be phantom thumbs ups! Or it’s a conspiracy. Or something.

The “said nobody ever” response to your quote is the truth, your “quote” is not. There is nothing incredible about Sox park except the gullibility of fans who pay money for tickets.
