AL East Notes: Rosario, Peraza, Chapman, Orioles, Wong

By Mark Polishuk | March 9, 2024 at 8:35am CDT

Before Amed Rosario signed a one-year, $1.5MM deal with the Rays, the Yankees offered the infielder a one-year contract with a significantly higher $4MM salary, the New York Post’s Joel Sherman reports.  While Rosario can earn another $500K in bonus money with Tampa, agent Ulises Cabrera told Sherman that his client was more interested in steady playing time than in extra guaranteed salary, as Rosario would’ve been ticketed as a bench or backup option in the Bronx.  Since Yankee targets Rosario and Enrique Hernandez have now both left the free agent market, Sherman feels the team will keep looking for veteran infield depth, and perhaps might pursue players currently on other rosters who might be cut or squeezed out of jobs late in Spring Training.

Oswald Peraza, of course, is ostensibly already slated to be New York’s backup infielder and backup shortstop in particular.  However, the Yankees might prefer to continue Peraza’s development by giving him everyday work at Triple-A rather than more a sporadic part-time role in the Show.  There is also the question of Peraza’s health, as a right shoulder issue has been bothering the infielder for the last two weeks.  Manager Aaron Boone said the Yankees don’t consider the injury to be overly serious for now, though Peraza is undergoing testing to determine the nature of the problem.

More from around the AL East…

  • The Blue Jays offered Matt Chapman a two-year contract before he signed with the Giants, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.  Given how long Chapman lingered on the market, it isn’t surprising that the Jays made a late bid to gauge his interest in a return to Toronto, even if Chapman’s “first choice” as per Heyman was reuniting with his old manager Bob Melvin in San Francisco.  It can probably be assumed that the Blue Jays’ offer contained a player opt-out after the 2024 season, given how Chapman’s eventual three-year deal with the Giants has opt-outs after each of the first two years, plus both sides have a mutual option for the 2027 season.  Re-installing Chapman at third base would’ve solidified the Jays’ infield situation, even if it would’ve made for a crowded mix of players fighting for regular work at second base and in backup roles.  Had Chapman re-signed, Justin Turner would’ve been limited to first base and DH at-bats, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Davis Schneider, and Santiago Espinal all would’ve been vying to be the right-handed hitting side of a second base platoon with Cavan Biggio.
  • Virtually all of Kolten Wong’s Major League experience has come as a second baseman, though his appearance at third base in yesterday’s Grapefruit League game marked his first time at the hot corner since college, Wong told MLB.com’s Jake Rill and other reporters.  “That’s just how the trend is going nowadays, is being versatile,” Wong said, and he is more than happy to shift positions if it means winning a job on the Orioles’ roster.  Wong is signed a minor league deal with Baltimore and is looking to rebound after a dismal 2023 season, though he’ll be in for a tough competition on a roster loaded with young infield talent and a couple of more established veterans in Jorge Mateo and Ramon Urias.
  • David Rubenstein’s impending purchase of the Orioles took another step towards completion yesterday when the league’s ownership committee approved the sale.  (ESPN’s Jeff Passan was among those to report on the news.)  Rubenstein will now need approval from the eight-man executive council, and then receive at least 23 of the votes from all 30 ownership groups in order for the sale to be completely finalized.  The process isn’t expected to run into any roadblocks, so the sale could be official in April.

Your generation and its viewpoints will only become less and less relevant from now until you’re all gone; relegated to the history books like all the other dumb and wrong generations that came before you.

So will mine, but I hope I have the grace to let it happen without sounding like you when it does.

Also lots of players have nice years for Rays. It’s more likely to lead to success presumably than earning more playing time in a bench role in NY. Also some players from places like Dominican like playing in FLA. It’s close to home and, at least in places has more of a Hispanic vibe around than say Cleveland probably does. Hispanic isn’t technically right word but idk what is.

Have you ever been to Washington Heights? 90% Dominican at the very least. Florida really outside of Miami doesn’t have much Hispanic flavor. I lived for 30 years in the NYC metro area and have spent the last 10 in sunny Florida. Definitely much more cultural diversity in NYC. Just my opinion.

Florida’s tax code is way better too, having half his games taxes in FL over NY is a substantial pay increase. It’ll probably end up being a 1-1.5MM loss, in total after all things considered for Amed. Still, seeing 5MM go to Anderson, and both Urshela and Rosario signing for 1.5MM still seems odd, they both seem more valuable than Jackie.

I wonder, having watched Chapman these last few years, if he also wanted out of Toronto so he could get back to a grass field.

He continues to look very athletic at 3rd, yet it seemed like a number of balls got by him or got to him a little faster then he expected. The metrics still liked him overall at 3rd, but his defense might benefit further from getting back to grass. No position in baseball, arguably, is more directly affected by turf then the ‘Hot Corner’.

Either way, wish him the best in SF and hope the Giants fans get to enjoy his wizardry with the glove. (and his absolute cannon of an arm)

Not one to compare turf to grass, but I would have to imagine that the outfielders are more deeply impacted (or affected) than a 3B? We will miss his arm, but we need more consistent power from the corner spot.

I think he just wanted out of Toronto, for some reason we’ll never find out. The flare up with the manager may have been some visible frustration. Never really seemed to think TO was home. Maybe it was “hair envy” with his SS….maybe the shenanigans of the last season last game.

Why wouldn’t MLB accelerate the approval process for Rubenstein. There’s no chance he doesn’t get approved and if they’d do it now the Os might make one more roster move to bolster the pitching staff in case Bradish can’t pitch.

Why should they? He’s going thru the normal process just like every new owner. You may be disappointed if the change in ownership doesn’t result in the change in payroll you hope for. After kicking out the money for the purchase, assuming they have more money and are willing to spend it, is quite the leap. Also, having new owners does not suddenly change how much revenue the team is expecting in 2025. Hope you’re right.

Respectfully, hate this take. No ownership group is ever perfect, but I think they were better than many. Winning/Post season teams every decade, spent money on home grown and free agents, and most importantly…lead to this glorious thing they are now.

I know others see it differently, but I’m a fan.

The Angelos are a (bird in the hand) and I have no idea about the new groups (2 birds in the bush).

Yep, me too. Glad it’s over. Have not been a Peter Angelos fan since he chased Pat Gillick, Davey Johnson and Jon Miller out of town in the late 90s. That little ego trip led to 14 consecutive losing seasons. Just couldn’t leave a good thing alone, could ya Peter.

Hey new owner guy Rubenstein if you’re looking for an ownership style to copy from previous Orioles owners, choose the Hoffberger one. Please!

Was it really a “good thing” that Angelos couldn’t leave alone? Williams destroyed the franchise from the bottom up in the years leading up to the ’83 WS victory and afterwards. Jacobs was the worst owner by far of the bunch, squeezing every penny out of the franchise while decimating the product further. Your points about Miller and Gillick are valid (Davey was self-inflicted) but Angelos spent money on talent and tried to put a winner on the field, the opposite of Jacobs.

This Orioles fan is old enough to remember the Eli Jacobs era of the Orioles and fans welcomed Angelos as a conquering hero. If you go back to the late 1990’s, the Orioles had a payroll of about $150M.. They lost in the ALCS. There was a fire sale the following year and the rest is history.

The over hyped Yankee prospects thing has been going on for 50+ years because of the parochial nature of the NY based media. Sure, there have been overhyped prospects from other organizations but the overwhelming tendency is for NY media figures to be so far up the Yank ass, they over hyped almost all of them.

It’s most teams… in fact it’s more prominent with most teams other than the Yankees. The difference is the Yankees media market is more prominent.

Examples of prospects that were hyped far above any Yankees prospects (as in top 5) are: Jo Adell, Addison Russell, Andrew Benintendi, Lucas Giolito, Oscar Taveras, Jurickson Profar, Miguel Sano, Jesus Montero, Dominic Brown, Brian Matusz, Joey Gallo, Yoan Moncada, Alex Reyes, etc.

Yankees prospects weren’t ranked nearly as high as these players.

Well, if the fact a player can’t stay healthy is the bar then the same could be said for Bird, Frazier, Andujar, Severino, etc, etc, etc.

I’m not against that excuse reasoning, but if it’s used to justify some teams’ prospects then that same courtesy should be extended to the Yankees as well. Also, some of these Yankees prospects had far more success than Reyes, even when healthy.

The point is: far more teams have prospects much more highly touted than the Yankees, and those prospects often fail to live up to their hype, or fail altogether. It has nothing to do with the Yankees because their prospects aren’t rated nearly what some of these guys have been. Look at all the failed consensus top prospects over the last two decades or so – just about all of them belong to the other 29 teams.

Peraza isn’t one of them as he’s barely played AAA ball. Isn’t he the succession plan to replace Gleyber Torres after this season? Or have him play SS and shift Volpe to 2B?

The Rays find another diamond in the rough, it is only spring training but Rosario has been on fire and with elite speed and can play all over the field it seems they’ve found another extremely valuable player for next to nothing. While the Yankees bank on extremely injury prone and aging talent, but if you listen to any article you’d think the Rays are gonna finish last 50 games behind NY

Well….that “diamond in the rough” has already not stuck with the previous 3 teams he’s been on in the 6 years he’s been in the league…..something makes a team move on from this guy but of course not in your opinion…..and, the Yankees did offer him as deal but wouldn’t guarantee playing time which made him choose the Rays who did…….let’s see how long your “diamond in the rough” sticks with the Rays…….

SF signed Rodon with a player opt out after 1 season. Manaea player opt out after 1. Stripling player opt out after 1. Haniger player opt out after 2. Conforto player opt out after 1. BUT NONE OF THOSE CONTRACTS PROVIDED A TEAM OPT OUT AFTER 1. Chapman’s contract has a player opt out after 1 AND A TEAM OPT OUT AFTER 1. None of those other “opt out” contracts had that. Yet I have yet to read one writer discuss the significance of that. It means a team has ZERO risk of being stuck with an underperforming player. It means that Chapman has A LOT at risk. So he MUST perform beyond expectations. Why would he do this contract this way? He has said it the other day, he wants to play for Giants for a long time. Again, the team opt out provisions were put in there to motivate SF to sign him. If he has an Mvp season, they probably renegotiate. If he struggles, they opt out and re-sign. Either way, expect him to be in SF a long time.
