Why would the Twins trade for Manuel Margot when they could have just re-signed Michael A. Taylor? Is there a logical explanation? Or did the Twins and Royals front offices just screw up? (39:45)
- Do you think that Emmanuel Clase could be traded at the deadline if the Guardians out of it? If so, what do you think he’d fetch at full strength? (43:00)

Hope we can finally cease talking about Cease until his contract ends.

The MLBPA is paying for decades of ignoring the needs of the majority of their membership, in favor of ensuring that the Scherzers, Verlanders and Cole’s of the world get their bag of life altering money.
JoeBrady
They did get huge raises for their pre-arb members.

40% of teams making the playoffs does not help either. Small and mid-market clubs will look out for its financial interests just like players that moan and groan, especially with easy cable money taking a hit with macro trends.
Build a team that is good enough or close to being a wildcard & let the deep pocket geographic darlings pay the big long-term FA deals. It is rational since neither side wants a tight salary floor/cap $ range that renders geography meaningless in other pro sports.

There are several layers here. I agree that the focus has been on the upper echelon players in the hopes the funds would trickle down. To some extent, it has, given that the minimum jumped a decent amount in the last CBA.
That being said, I think one huge factor is that players are being brought up earlier than ever (and getting paid). Jackson Courio is a poster boy example.
Data analytics are showing that paying $20M for a year of 36 year old JD Martinez at DH is not feasible. Worse, paying $200M for 6-7 years of Snell. So when these blowhard agents (and media) throw out these ridiculous numbers, it sets up the players for failure. Expectations are totally skewed.
The game is changing. It’s getting faster. It’s getting younger. And it’s getting even more global. The salary structure is adapting to this (Chourio, Yamamoto, etc).

Great podcast today, gents.

Nothing like hearing about the richest 1 percent in the world cry about money.

Call me crazy, but JD Davis got what he deserved. He was pushing for an extra 500k in arbitration Knowing that the contract wouldn’t be guaranteed if he won. They moved on and he lost millions. Don’t be so greedy. Take the 6.4 and get paid.

“Call me crazy”…Its hard for me to believe a one dimensional player like J.D Davis can make over $6M+ playing baseball. I believe his agent probably gave him faulty advice and he didn’t know any better.
wagner13
“JD Davis got what he deserved.”
For what? The arbitrator clearly agreed with him.
Some of you act like these players committed manslaughter. I don’t blame Davis for doing what he did, and it was likewise well within the rights of Zaidi to cut him, given the structure of the CBA. I don’t consider Zaidi nor Davis to be Greedy. You, on the other hand, express irrational hatred for the player, while ignoring that the GM also acted out of his own self-interest
'Tang It
The point is he should’ve known it wouldn’t be guaranteed money. He could have been assured 6.4 but he pushed for 6.9 and now gets like half of that after signing somewhere. It’s short sighted and stupid when there are rumors of the team looking for an upgrade.
refereemn77
Of course he knows it wasn’t guaranteed. And the Giants would have cut him anyway. $500k didn’t make the difference here
'Tang It
Correct, but he would’ve walked away with all 6.4 instead of basically nothing.

Rangers set a good example last year.
Let’s go finish it out boys !
Just try not to trip over Ohtani’s embarrassment and Yamamoto’s ERA while rounding the bases.
GSWfanklay
Hahaha the dodgers Lux can’t play ss Yarmotto can’t get mlb hitters out and Shohie is getting swindled, or he is gambling

Good signing

The commentary involving MN’s front office is excellent regarding their decision making process between re-signing Taylor and their eventual choice on the Margot trade. This is precisely why there are still plenty of Twins fans like me that remain tremendously critical of MN’s Falvey-Levine led leadership. These guys are good for 4-5 of these mishaps annually if you study the organization’s history this past decade.

The San Diego Padres. LOL!
