April 9: Lamet cleared waivers and has been assigned outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City, per the team’s transaction log at MLB.com. He has more than enough service time (nearly six years) to reject the assignment in favor of free agency, if he chooses.
April 6: The Dodgers announced that right-hander Dinelson Lamet has been designated for assignment. The move opens up a roster space for fellow righty Gus Varland, who has been called up from Triple-A.
Lamet’s minor league deal was selected to the active roster on April 1, and he has posted a 2.08 ERA over three appearances and 4 1/3 innings of work. While a small sample size, Lamet’s 16.7% strikeout rate was uninspiring, and he allowed a solo homer to Michael Busch during 1 1/3 frames in yesterday’s 9-7 Dodgers loss to the Cubs. If Lamet is the proverbial 26th man on the roster, Los Angeles seems willing to risk losing him on outright waivers in order to add a fresh arm in Varland, though it is certainly possible Lamet clears waivers and remains in the organization.
This cup of coffee with the Dodgers represents one of Lamet’s better stretches of pitching in the last four years, as he has a 6.63 ERA over 111 1/3 innings with four different big league clubs since the start of the 2021 campaign. Once a promising starter in the Padres’ rotation in 2019-20, Lamet has been set back by injuries and a consistent lack of control when facing MLB batters.

It’s a revolving door of relievers!
Dorothy_Mantooth
Really tough being the 25th or 26th man on the Dodgers roster these days. Lamet had performed decently in the 3 games he got into and now…DFA time! Second RP so far this season to feel the wrath of Friedman.
deweybelongsinthehall
Really tough to be the final reliever on any club given how pitchers are used/abused today. This is what Tampa has done for years and while they’ve been successful getting to the dance, it doesn’t prove you can get a WS title this way. It has always been the last player on the roster is in jeopardy but in the last 10 or 20 years it’s gotten ridiculous.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Seems like the Dodgers do it to the extreme though. It’s not often you see a guy pitch the ninth in a save situation and then DFA’d 48 hours after that. Second time of this “sign ’em, use ’em then kick ’em to the curb” approach by the Dodgers already this season at least. Seems kind of crass & exploitative, no? Something is afoul with this Dodgers team & the stench is increasingly coming from the front office & behind the door marked A.F.
mohoney
It’s not exploitative against players who have over five years of service. They can refuse the assignment, file for free agency, and still retain their salaries. Teams are only let off the hook for the money if players secure another major-league job. For guys with at least three years of service but less than five, they can also refuse an assignment, but they lose their salaries by doing so. In addition, players can only be outrighted without consent off the 40-man roster only once in their careers. Any subsequent outright assignments can be rejected with retention of salary.
Plus, these outcomes only happen after players clear waivers. Every other team gets a chance to add these guys without giving up any trade capital. They can’t really complain if every other team gets a chance to add them and decides against it.
It’s MUCH worse for guys who still have options remaining. They keep getting screwed out of their salaries for every 10-day stint they spend in the minors.
Fever Pitch Guy
Ignorant – MLB is aware of the situation and has been discussing a minimum days requirement when pitchers are added to major league rosters.

Appreciate the Dodgers for thinking they could fix another pitcher the Rockies couldn’t. More smartest guy in the room activity please.
taran7
Well actually, they did fix him, for as long as they wanted him.
amk1920
He got a save for them but Rockies fans aren’t used to winning games so that’s a tough concept

The very slow moving wheels of justice for high profile cases. It’s typical. Any of us normal peons would be under the jail by now.

The apparent dichotomy is purely about the business of the game. Male professional sports leagues are supportive of gambling, even with all its ills. It dominates sports now, legal or not.
Abuse of women? not an optic to easily sell.
RunDMC
Pretty impressive he secured a save in that cup of coffee.
MWeller77
I think a brief stint where you get a save should called be a cappucino or a latte
RunDMC
Really wish he was able to catch a can of corn in his cup of coffee. But please, no pepper games.
I’m hungry.
BlueSkies_LA
I was at that game, ready to bury my face in my hands when Lamet was brought in to save that one run lead in the ninth.
truthlemonade
Between Lamet and Nabil Crismatt, two relievers were sent down after brief performances which were actually really good.
What would be the position player equivalent? Playing one game and going 1-3 with a walk and and a double.
Unclemike1525
Pretty sure name recognition and that ERA will get a shot somewhere else.
highflyballintorightfield
You know how to stop the Dodgers from doing this? Someone claim the pitchers when they hit waivers. Until that happens, why should they stop?
User 2161944466
It’s amazing how much Dodger corruption was swept under the rug during the Gil Garcetti era. Now that the uber progressive George Gascón runs the show, it’s gotten even worse. Tax cuts, fraudulent charitable foundations, the over aggressive prosecution of Puig, and turning Echo Park into some sort of freak show just to gentrify is only a handful of reasons that the Dodgers are despised by those in the know
BlueSkies_LA
Well you certainly know it all.

At first I thought also like many it’s tough being the 25 26 guy , up and down , but then if u think about it, as a collective group , there are now tons of AAAA guys getting called up to replace guys , so lots of guys get a few weeks or so to make mlb money.
A few weeks in the bigs once or twice or three is a lot of money to career minor leaguers.
MLB-1971
My comment from April 1 spot on. It’s just how MLB works.
“MLB-1971
April 1, 2024
Carry – agreed. My crystal ball says after he is called up for someone who is injured, he will last about a week before he gets his DFA.
Most people on this site assume when someone is called up they are supposed to be good and stay on the roster for years to come. That is simply not so. Some call ups are true prospects who will last and contribute, but a significant 40% to 60% are roster churn, depth call ups who are optioned back to AAA, or for players out of options, DFA.”
MLB-1971
The average team in the MLB used a roster of between 57 – 60 players/ pitchers per season, so if the MLB roster is only 26, then there are a hell of a lot of call ups and optioning back to AAA or DFA when a player has used all three of their option years. The whining is something that will have to be negotiated at the next bargaining agreement. Injuries happen. Underperformance happens and the must be a mechanism to add and subtract players. Most people forget the minimum wage for a MLB player is about $4000 per day, so 4 weeks cumulatively on an MLB roster is about $112,000 or double the average household income in the USA. I do not think most players mind making their income for the year since most players who are out of options have signed contracts for over $100,000 each, and most are well over that.

Lots of salt over Dinelson Lamet. Dude could have been anyone’s for a wad of used chewing gum last season and now, since he’s had a decent week, everyone is pressed about the Dodgers usage of the scrap heap to eat innings.
Rickey O'Sunnyvale
How dare the Dodgers sign a minor league player, give him a chance to show his stuff in a MLB save situation and then free him to pursue other opportunities.. Heartless buggers..
Liberalsteve
That was their intention?
B-rocker
Lamet and Crismat must surely feel abused by the Dodgers since both of them are still in the organization. Either could have declared for free agency but no. Still wearing blue.
BlueSkies_LA
Hardly think they have the Midas touch. Lamet is still Lamet, a borderline journeyman reliever now stashed away in the minors. The Dodgers go through a lot of these warm bodies to burn innings over the course of a season. A few years ago one of them came and went so quickly his name was applied to the back of his jersey with tape.
BlueSkies_LA
Weak. Very weak.
