AL Central Notes: Crochet, Clevinger, Wacha, Lange

By Mark Polishuk | June 16, 2024 at 4:27pm CDT

Unsurprisingly, the White Sox have set an “exorbitant” asking price on Garrett Crochet in early trade talks, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale writes.  As we already saw this past winter with the Dylan Cease trade negotiations and the eventual deal that sent Cease to the Padres, the Sox are naturally out for the biggest return possible when moving any of their most valuable trade chips.  Crochet definitely fits that description, as he has broken out as a starting pitcher this year and is under arbitration control through the 2026 season.

Chicago isn’t likely to drop its demands much (or even at all) until closer to the deadline, and Crochet’s arbitration control also gives the Sox some extra leverage since the team doesn’t need to move the southpaw any time soon.  If anything, Crochet having a full and healthy season as a starter might only increase what the White Sox might be looking for in trade talks during the offseason, when the Sox could speak to a wider array of potential suitors.

More from around the AL Central…

  • Sticking with the White Sox, Mike Clevinger told reporters (including MLB.com’s Scott Merkin) that he is set to begin rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte.  The plan is for Clevinger to start on Tuesday and Sunday in Charlotte before then possibly being activated from the 15-day injured list if all goes well.  Clevinger hasn’t pitched since May 23 due to a bout of elbow inflammation, and he has a 6.75 ERA over 16 innings and four starts this season.  Clevinger’s season already got off to a late start since he didn’t sign his one-year, $3MM free agent deal with Chicago until the start of April, but if he able to return healthy, he’ll have over a month to audition for interested teams heading into the trade deadline.
  • Michael Wacha is slated to make a rehab start with the Royals’ Arizona Complex League team tomorrow, manager Matt Quatraro told MLB.com’s Anne Rogers and other reporters.  This might be Wacha’s only rehab outing, as Quatraro indicated that the Royals are planning to have the veteran righty back in their rotation next weekend.  Wacha signed a two-year, $32MM contract (with an opt-out after this season) with Kansas City this past winter, and delivered a 4.24 ERA over his first 68 innings as a Royal before a non-displaced fracture in his left foot resulted in an IL stint.  June 1 was the retroactive start date of that IL visit, so returning by next weekend makes for a relatively quick return for Wacha, which is good news considering the tricky nature of such injuries.
  • Alex Lange had to leave the mound during an outing with Triple-A Toledo on Friday, and the Tigers reliever was in visible discomfort with an apparent upper-body injury.  Lange was set to undergo tests this weekend and the team hasn’t yet given any official word on his status.  Detroit optioned Lange to Triple-A last month after he posted a 4.34 ERA and (more distressingly) an 18.9% walk rate over 18 2/3 innings this season.  Lange has long battled control problems but his stay in Toledo seemed to be bearing dividends, as he had only a 2.9% walk rate and a 3.12 ERA over 8 2/3 Triple-A innings.

Why would you trade Crochet? Start the rebuild with him!! You just can’t keep trading guys with value. Trade Reinsdorf and Getz instead!!

Crochet is signed through 2026. During this time the White Sox will not be contenders. You trade him now for assets that will help in the future when the team plans on contending again. Weakening the already weak team now to strengthen it later is exactly what they should be doing.

        @Blackpink

Agreed. I don’t think they’d get as much as they did for Cease but they could still get a nice return.

O’s fan here and I’ve heard packages centered around Coby Mayo which seems like a fair opener towards a deal. Something like a top 25-ish type prospect with a few more lower-tier or long term project type guys might get it done. Teams might balk at Crochet’s lack of track record so I’m not sure it they’d be able to nab two top prospects.

If I was the White Sox I would take Mayo for Crochet for sure no doubt. They need a 3b or at least a 1b long term. As for the Orioles I just wonder if Crochet is the right guy. I can’t see him pitching in October unless he gets shut down before then and doing that is risky. I liked a Luzardo for Mayo deal prior to the season but Luzardo hasn’t played well. The Orioles imo need a lefty starter who is at least a number 3. If the Braves fall apart over the next month Sale or Fried would be perfect but I wouldn’t count on that happening.

Well of course they’d accept Mayo for Crochet. Doubt the Orioles would even offer him.

Nope. O’s won’t trade Mayo for a guy with a limited track record as a starter and that type of injury history. If Chicago keeps running him out there every 5 days, he’s likely to wind up on the IL.

What kind of a track record does Mayo have in MLB?

None, yet. But the O’s still wouldn’t make that deal, imo. Crochet will blow up before he reaches 150 inns if the White Sox keep putting him out there.

Mayo is in A ball because he’s on an injury rehab fella. He was tearing up AAA. He’s big league ready and looks like he’s going to be a stud.

Crochet is leading the league in Ks, and will continue to do so until his arm, which is not ready for 150+ inns, blows up. Not his fault. It will be management’s fault.

As long as the White Sox trade Crochet by July I would say they are playing it smart. But acquiring teams should be very concerned for the rest of 2024.

They would need so many things to go perfectly in order to contend while Crochet is under contract. Dude is making basically league minimum first year of arb, due to the injuries, keeping his future arb costs down. Either cash in now for a kings ransom or get an extension to keep him around for the next go if nobody meets your price. Throw in a new front office unattached to previous regime players and you’ve got a hot stove

Junior and Crochet aren’t FA til 2027. Crochet is also on an innings limit(which is 100IP-120IP something like that). When you hit rock bottom it can only go up.

You’re talking about a major league franchise owned by serious people. We’re talking about the White Sox owned by JR. Big difference.

And, yes, I’m a lifelong Sox fan. I stopped giving JR any of my money many years ago. I hope they end up with the worst record in baseball history this year.

Tigers pitching makes no difference this year since they can’t hit. I get they scored 13 runs yesterday but they were almost no-hit today. Without consistent hitting all the pitching in the world won’t win you anything. Maybe “boy wonder” Harris will trade some of the Tigers surplus pitching for some hitting, but doubt it

Hopefully that is the plan. It sucks to be so close to a wild card berth and see games like today. Hopefully the plan includes making some trades to fill in the gaps.

Move Carson Kelly and call up Dingler.
Send Baddoo down and recall Parker Meadows.
Harris is right (so far) to see what they have before making big signings like Avila or big trades like Dombrowski. They weren’t going deep in the playoffs even with a hitter.

You can’t continue to wait. Have good pitching, get some bats. Who says pitching will be good next year….I miss Mr I….Tigers had the best 1B in baseball and still signed Fielder…I would take Dombrowski in a heartbeat. Play to win today. Tomorrow guarantees nothing. Don’t waste this great rotation.

Those moves sound good. Jung should be brought up sooner than later too.

It is frustrating when the pitching is good and the hitting doesn’t match up but I too like what Harris is doing for the most part. In relation to SS I don’t though. Baez needs to go or be benched at least and they need to go get themselves a young stud SS. Kreidler is not the answer, I like Leonard but he’s a huge unknown and McGonigle is supposedly 2B bound eventually.

Look at the standings for the last 5 years MISTER ILLICH. That’s what you have.

Are you Al Avila? Sounds like your thought process is just to throw money at the issue (i.e. your master plan a coue weeks ago to trade for Stanton) vs developing players and filling in the gaps with signings/trades. Because that worked so well the last time they did it!

      Hard no Superfife. Try again.

Who said anything about throwing money around? Please confine yourself to reality and actuality. Yes. I first suggested Stanton during the off season, I believed him ready for a health and bat rebound, the point being, the Yankee want to shed payroll and they will give prospects to do it. I don’t understand why the concept was so difficult to grasp.
It’s still true, more now than ever. My point last week was that the Yankees probably do NOT have the prospect capital necessary to shed payroll AND add frontline guys.
IF they want to sign Soto or add quality this season, they need to dump payroll.
        Rizzo what remains of $17+$6
        LeMahieu remainder of $15, $15, $15
        Grisham remainder of $5.
Not even mentioning Stanton (this off season it was a good idea) has 17 hrs this year but his insane contract would have purchased prospects for Detroit if we had done it when I originally suggested. (And now we could have traded him with his 17 hrs, too bad. )

“Does Cashman have the nerve to empty the cupboard?”, was the question, basically.

Tiger fans should actually consider what they could possibly get for anyone and everyone save Tork, Greene and Vierling.

LA has needs. Ibanez rocks! Ect., ect., ect.

Now, you know what they should do?
        Who should they hire?

Twins could really use a solid SP like Luzardo or Crochet. We’ve got the prospect capital to do it too, just depends on what the Sox want. They won’t be competitive for a few years now so maybe some top AA or high A prospects?
