The Diamondbacks and Mariners are among the teams “thought to be vying for” Marlins closer Tanner Scott, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. At least a dozen clubs have reportedly shown some level of interest in Scott’s services, with the D’Backs and M’s now joining the Orioles, Dodgers, Phillies, Yankees, and Royals as publicly known suitors.
Scott threw another scoreless inning in Miami’s 6-2 win over the Brewers last night, extending his scoreless innings streak to 17 2/3 frames. For the season as a whole, Scott has a superb 1.18 ERA over 45 2/3 innings, with a 28.7% strikeout rate and similarly excellent numbers almost across the board — with the glaring exception of his 14.8% walk rate, which sits just a few decimal points away from being the very worst in baseball.
While these control problems make Scott less than an automatic lock in the ninth inning, this is his second consecutive season of tremendous results as the Marlins’ closer. Since Miami is in seller mode and Scott is a free agent after the season, the left-hander is one of the most obvious players to be moved by the July 30 trade deadline, and several contenders are naturally reaching out to the Marlins about Scott’s services.
Arizona, in fact, already completed a deal with Miami about another southpaw reliever just two days ago, picking up A.J. Puk for two prospects. Heyman’s report doesn’t specify the timing of the Diamondbacks’ inquiries about Scott, so it does seem possible that the D’Backs might’ve pivoted to Puk as a backup plan if the Marlins’ asking price for Scott was too high. On the flip side, an argument can easily be made that Arizona’s shaky bullpen needs more reinforcements than just Puk, so it is easy to imagine that trade as perhaps laying some groundwork for future talks, once the Marlins explore what other clubs are willing to give up for Scott.
Diamondbacks GM Mike Hazen told reporters (including Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports) that the Snakes could add more relievers, and the team was continuing to focus on acquiring pitching before turning to acquire any position players. “We’re still gonna stay engaged in every market, you never know when an opportunity is gonna come up,” Hazen said.
The Mariners are another team who has already been very active in advance of July 30, as Seattle has acquired both Randy Arozarena and Yimi Garcia in respective trades with the Rays and Blue Jays. Like with the D’Backs and the Puk trade, Seattle’s acquisition of Garcia probably doesn’t close the door on the possibility that the M’s might also aim to land Scott, though the Mariners have a far more glaring need for offense than pitching. Depending on how much prospect depth or financial flexibility the M’s have, Seattle could opt to focus its upcoming moves towards adding more bats, rather than bring Scott into what is already a pretty solid bullpen.

We can really just say every team looking to buy at the deadline is interested in Tanner Scott.
Simm
Yeah every single team in contention would want Scott. He very well may end up brining the best return of any player traded this deadline.

Scott Servais is interested in Scott’s services

Scott’s Totts. I just wanted to type that

Dbacks are going for it. With the way the Mets, padres and dbacks have been playing of late the braves may very well miss the playoffs. Heck even the cards and pirates may pass them by.
It’s going to be a crazy last two months in the NL wild card race.

I’m hearing that the Guardians would trade Emmanuel Clase for a controllable MLB OF or near ready top OF prospect AND a mid level starter with at least one more year of control – IF the other team is also willing to take on Myles Straw’s contract. A lot of tangible factors there, but find it interesting they would trade Clase. Maybe because his salary doubles next year.
Simm
They were rumored to being open to trading him in the offseason. This sounds like one of those if someone wants to overpay they will listen but most likely nothing happens.

You’re hearing g this? Sources, please. I don’t see them moving Clase.

C’mon Baltimore. Kimbrel isn’t getting any better.
skinsfandfw
The defense failed Kimbrel last night against the Pads, but I’d love a Scott homecoming at the Yard.

*against Miami
Padres game was 100% on Kimbrel

He blew the Yankee game too right before All Star game. He’s just not reliable as a closer.
skinsfandfw
How many are? There’s like 3 or 4 in the entire game?
I’m not defending Kimbrel, just saying elite untouchable closers don’t grow on trees.
Yankee Clipper
Yankees need someone like Tanner Scott, so instead of trading for him they will (in the words of Michael Kay) “continue investigating the market” while other teams actually trade for him.

The Blueprint is seek out pitchers that dominate with a certain non traditional slider, called the Roger Beshens Football Slider.
The Rays learned it in 2018 when they saw Glasnow in Pitt throwing it.
Bendix learned this, took advantage of the information and ran with it.
Now the Dbacks are smart and know the blueprint, got PUK and just maybe going for another one,
Dbacks are content with Sewald, Jarvis, Mantiply but would love to upgrade.

Seems like the M’s dodged a bullet with Gregory Santos’ knee which is a relief. With the Yimi García trade, and giving up Clase who was our #10 prospect, I’d be more into bringing up Logan Evans to complete the bullpen, rather than giving up prospects for a rental who’s going to be a free agent after this season. We need hitters, and our farm system is our only way to attain them, given John Stanton’s track record of being cheap.
24TheKid
They are transitioning Evans back into the rotation as they said his stuff didn’t tick up coming in relief, he won’t be in the bullpen.
SweetLouGrit253
Good to know. Wasn’t sure how that was playing out.
Ringorbust
Clase wasn’t our number 10 prospect. MLB pipeline is widely inaccurate. He’s closer to 20 for people who know the Ms system.
yanks2323
Gotta like other teams stocking up while the Yanks stand bye. Enjoy the unemployment line Cashman!

Dbacks bull pen now has 7 solid relievers (Sewald, Ginkel, Puk, Martinez, Thompson, Mantiply and Jarvis. Do they need to give up the farm for a rental eighth? I doubt it. I think they pivot to another lefty instead, who will be more affordable.
If they felt they had to have both Puk and Scott, they would have gone all in on the pair. Trading in two separate transaction raises the price. I think they inquired as part of due diligence before deciding on Puk only at a more affordable price.
desertdawg
Hazen has always said he has no problem with trading prospects if it brings in the player they want and need. That be said he was shooting for a starting pitcher last year and he then said he did not want to give up the whole farm to get a rental starting pitcher. Would not surprise me if he would land Scott, he would probably have to overpay though, which then would not say this could be a bluff and disguise and end up landing Crochet from the WSox if he was to overpay in prospects.
scottaz
desertdawg
I agree. Crochet makes the most sense to the Dbacks of any pitcher on the market. I’d overpay for him. He’s young, has multiple years of control, probably should function as a reliever the rest of this year, but could slide into a starter role next year and could fill in this year as a starter if any one of Kelly/Rodriquez/Montgomery gets injured/doesn’t come back from current injury/underperforms. I like that flexibility and only Crochet offers it.
Angels & NL West
What do you think it would take for the Dbacks to get Crochet?
Ghost of hermanfranks
lawlar, jmar, diaz nelson henry wont cheap
desertdawg
Looking at the WSox roster, I think they would look at Lawler, Jones, Ciccone and another mid 30 prospect. It would be a big gamble, but that does give you a couple of years of Crochet before he goes to arbitration. Reading a couple articles on the WSox, you have to remember that there are a couple of scouts that were with the D’Backs farm system now on the WSox front office and they know the talent just as well as anyone on the talent they would be asking for. Would Hazen take the gamble,????.
scottaz
Angels &
Based on the fact that the WSox already turned down two offers, I think there are two realities. One reality is that the WSox and many commentators on these threads think Crochet will fetch a tremendous return, like what desertdawg suggested below. The other reality is what Major League GM’s are willing to offer, like what was turned down twice already.
I’m in the second camp. I think the WSox will either refuse to trade Crochet or compromise and accept the best offer they actually receive.
So, I think it’s possible the Dbacks would offer one of Lawler/Jones, but not both. In other words 1 Top 100 prospect, but not two. Something like Jones, Walston, Adrian Del Castillo and Bryson Brigman
Ghost of hermanfranks
wouldn’t skubel and crochet cost the same? if im the gm im asking for diaz lawlar and even Nelson. effing erod amd merrill and henry putting the hurt on hazen
desertdawg
Have to look at the D’Backs right now and looking to next year, Hazen is also looking at 2025 starting staff you have Gallen FA after 2025, Kelly 37yrs old, Rodriguez signed thru 2028, Montgomery 2025 option. So looking at that I would say Crochet would be a possibility to consider.
24TheKid
I think there’s a solid chance the Mariners will pull off a Chisholm and Scott trade. Marlins scouts were in Everett watching the Aquasox play a week ago, but no coincidence they were playing Arizonas A+ team that night. If it happens I would guess it starts with Montes and Arroyo and then add on from there, probably Logan Evans.
SodoMojo90
Laz should be untouchable.
Zippy the Pinhead
So Chisholm is now a Yankee. Scott is a great fit to shorten the game for the M’s, but if everyone else wants him, I suspect he’ll go somewhere else. It’ll be interesting to see if they make a trade with the White Sox after their final game of the series today. Luis Robert would be a good pickup.
g-man
France had the same OPS as the team average when he was traded, .662.
