Dodgers Acquire Jack Flaherty

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2024 at 6:30pm CDT

The Dodgers and Tigers are in agreement on a trade sending right-hander Jack Flaherty to Los Angeles, reports Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press.  The Tigers will receive catcher/first baseman Thayron Liranzo and shortstop Trey Sweeney, according to Robert Murray of FanSided.  The Dodgers have now officially announced the trade.

After much speculation, the Dodgers add the best pitcher to be traded at the 2024 deadline.  Flaherty, 29 in October, sports a 2.95 ERA in 18 starts this year.  Among pitchers with at least 100 innings, his 32 K% ranks fifth in all of baseball.  He’s also trimmed his walk rate to a career-best 4.6%.

A first-round pick by the Cardinals out of high school a decade ago, Flaherty earned a fifth-place Rookie of the Year finish in 2018.  He followed that up by finishing fourth in the NL Cy Young voting in 2019, capped by a run of 16 starts in which he had a 0.93 ERA.

After stumbling in the shortened COVID season, Flaherty was limited to 78 1/3 innings in 2021 due to oblique and shoulder strains.  The shoulder issues persisted into 2022, a season in which Flaherty pitched just 36 innings.

Flaherty avoided the IL last year, but was ineffective for the Cardinals and was shipped to the Orioles in a deadline trade.  His struggles in Baltimore were enough that the club moved him to the bullpen before the end of the season.

Seeking to rebuild his value and re-enter free agency, Flaherty inked a one-year, $14MM deal with the Tigers last December.  He missed a few starts due to back pain, but otherwise Flaherty has been an ace for the Tigers.  At seven games out in the wild card, Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris opted for a pair of prospects from the Dodgers rather than a qualifying offer and draft pick compensation.

With Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the IL for a triceps injury, the Dodgers sought a front of the rotation arm to pair with Tyler Glasnow.  They may have it in Flaherty, and the club also saw Clayton Kershaw make his season debut last week.  Righty Gavin Stone, who opened the season as the Dodgers’ fifth starter, has been a mainstay all year.  Yamamoto may yet return, while Walker Buehler is currently on a rehab assignment for hip inflammation.  Dustin May, Tony Gonsolin, and Emmet Sheehan are all out for the season, pushing rookies Justin Wrobleski and River Ryan into the Dodgers’ rotation.  Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman shipped veteran starter James Paxton to the Red Sox last week.

The Dodgers, who also added Kevin Kiermaier, Amed Rosario, Tommy Edman, and Michael Kopech in recent trades, sought an impact arm this month and were also linked to Garrett Crochet of the White Sox.  Crochet, who was not ultimately traded, would’ve fit better with the Dodgers’ hefty payroll, but his October availability was in question.  Flaherty has about $4.67MM left on his contract this year, on which the Dodgers will pay a 110% tax.

The Dodgers had three prospects on Baseball America’s recent top 100 list, and none of them were required to rent Flaherty from the Tigers for the remainder of the season.

Liranzo, 21, has split his time between catcher and first base for the High-A Great Lakes Loons this year.  He’s got a 106 wRC+ in 314 plate appearances this year after raking in A-ball last year.  Liranzo represented the Dodgers at the Futures Game earlier this month.  MLB.com assigned Liranzo a 50 grade, calling him “one of the best young catching prospects in baseball.”  Prior to the season, Baseball America also assigned a 50 grade to the switch-hitting Liranzo, saying he “projects to be an average defender overall” with above-average power and a below-average hit tool.

Sweeney, 24, was drafted 20th overall by the Yankees back in 2021 and was sent to the Dodgers last December in a deal for reliever Victor Gonzalez.  As Oklahoma City’s shortstop, Sweeney has an 87 wRC+ in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League this year.  MLB.com gave him a 45 grade, noting that he has “stayed at shortstop longer than most scouts expected.”  BA also put a 45 on Sweeney prior to the season, saying he “has the ceiling of a second-division shortstop.”

Projecting prospects is tricky business, which is why I defer to the experts.  But compared to the returns for Trevor Rogers and Yusei Kikuchi, the Tigers’ side of this trade feels underwhelming.  At any rate, the first-place Dodgers have significantly bolstered their rotation as they look to return to the World Series for the first time in four years.

The Tigers’ rotation now features little beyond Cy Young frontrunner Tarik Skubal, with Reese Olson on the IL with a shoulder injury.  The Tigers seemingly never got close to trading Skubal, though they did move veterans Mark Canha, Andrew Chafin, and Carson Kelly along with Flaherty in the last two days.

A lot of teams on the periphery of competition were also buyers, so I guess it wouldn’t be a deadline without them too.

Bought isn’t the word. At TDL teams traded. FA’s are bought.

Good point, Brew. You don’t get very much at the deadline with bucks, you get it by trading from the farm. You have to give up prospect capital.

@Mojo, I’ll have to find out where my beloved HS English teacher is buried before I have that conversation wit her. Will be sure to get back to you though if find a map and then get a response. But until then I was just trying to distinguish that typically when teams are accused of “buying championships” etc,, it’s usually not via the trade route.

Pretty sure bought is the term the journalists covering baseball have been using far before most of us were even alive.

Buyers and sellers have a very different connotation vs “traders.” We all understand that pure cash isn’t making these deals happen, but often teams are making things happen with their cash who would be considered “buyers”, aka receiving better trades due to taking contracts that aren’t the most desirable in a vaccum.

Maybe the same word “buy” can be applied at TDL as FA purchases off season, but it can be used as a double-edged sword. When ridiculed (see original TAKERDBACKS post above and below) for “buying” a winning team (as opposed to earning a winner through multiple building strategies) I like to distinguish between trade buyers and FA buying. Didn’t mean to upset anyone, I won’t do it again.

Brew: I wasn’t upset. Still not. All good. LAD just used two farm hands to land a good rental hurler who should help them in October. Whether one sees the prospects land in the majors (eg .Andy Pages) or uses the prospects to bring in other major talent, or spend on free agents, its all to the same goal. Winning ball games. Some people seem to think there’s a right and a wrong way to do that.

I appreciate that you handle it with class. I’ve tried to be civic with my Dodger friends and family despite my life-long painful relationship with your team.

Good luck in the stretch run. No more injuries would be nice. The Phils didn’t land Skubal and LA didn’t get Crochet so it gives everyone else at least a fighting chance. Look out for Cease tomorrow night, he’s on a historic roll.

You have endless prospects and you’ll have your two Japanese ringers next year but sure buy another star and give up nothing. Spending $1B wasn’t enough? Oh no we only have 9 capable starters right now what will we do without a 10th?!?!?

The Dodgers have only the 5th highest payroll, and only the 13th highest payroll among active players, but keep on talking about the billion-dollar thing. Newsflash: every franchise will be spending in the billions over the next ten years, not just the Dodgers.

Liranzo and Sweeney is a steep price to pay for a 2 month rental. But that’s the trend at this TDL. Pitching is unbelievably pricey. A good year to be sellers for sure.

Those aren’t even top 15 prospects. Sweeney we acquired for caleb ferguson. Liranzo might pan out. But it’s absolutely worth trading for a guy who’s putting up prime buehler numbers for a postseason run.

With C/1B locked up this was a trade the Dodgers had to make. Good job on them waiting till the final 30 mins to possibly get a better deal. Bit surprised this offer wasn’t topped in the AM today by another team

Harris was being lambasted on Detroit Sports Radio right up until the trade finally happened. After he screwed up the E-Rod trade, and then didn’t have a backup plan last deadline, doing nothing was not an option. Fans wanted him fired if Flaherty was not traded and not extended. It was like watching musical chairs, as one by one, teams acquired a different starting arm. It really looked like Harris would be without a chair once again. Luckily, neither Crochet or Taillon were moved. Harris was able to take whatever last minute offer he could get. He had no where else to go.

Doesn’t matter to the Dodgers. They can pick close to last in the draft every year and still have a better farm system than 90% of the other teams somehow.

My comment was more about the trend we’re seeing with cost for TDL pitching across the board. I didn’t mean to insult Dodgers fans, and I’m truly sorry if I did. Congrats on getting Flaherty.

But a decade ago it seems like it wouldn’t have cost as much as today for a TDL rental mid- to upper-tier SP. I wonder if this notion bears out in the trend data though, maybe it’s just me.

Do the Yankees not have a thriving minor league system to draw from? Aside from the few who they shuttle from AAA to the majors, I’m not aware of any highly coveted prospects coming up at any level.

Not really. They have a few prospects that look really good, but I’d cap it at 3 or 4.

Spenser Jones is the most notable with Dominguez returning to the Big Leagues.

Ben Rice has shown promising offense, but is still adjusting.

They also have a couple pitchers that broke out. But, their other “good” prospects are still in their early development (Arias and Mayea).

A hell of a lot more than SD has.

All of the other teams played in 2020. Why did they bother if it meant nothing? As I recall, SD was pretty upset when they got bounced from the postseason in 2020.

Please don’t try to say they would have rejected the trophy.

@ElysianPark all of the other teams played in 2020 for money, just like the Dodgers; players wanted to get paid and teams wanted to make money.

That’s why they bothered playing in spite of ’20 being a glorified exhibition

It wasn’t a crack at the Padres, it’s just the fact that Dodgers win the deadline every year and don’t make it in the postseason. Who knows, this year could be different.

Padres wrecked their whole team from last year and change it every year… no wonder there’s no chemistry

How many of these Padres farm system prospects in the past 5 years or so are “elite” major league players? None. Preller drafts these guys, moves them up the system WAY too quickly and because he’s supposed to be an “expert talent evaluator” other teams bite.

The dude can spot excellent minor league players, but couldnt spot real major league talent if it landed on his face.

@Blackpink. You mean they sold the farm “again” for a bunch of relievers. Next year they might sell the farm for some other types of position players. After many years of watching this process repeat itself over and over, I’m past the point of trying to figure out if it’s sustainable or not.

It is, but those of us who’ve been fans for decades are well aware that this current run is unprecedented. I always felt like the Dodgers would be competitive, and we have had a history of Rookies of the Year and Cy Young winners.

But this is beyond anything I could have hoped for. Ownership is printing money and using it to improve the team every year during the season, and holding out for the right talent in free agency/offseason.

Yeah, the Dodgers seemed to realize that having a good team (in a good city, I have never been so ill just assume) helps them get more money, that the can then reinvest in the team, and it’s like printing money!

As a Sox fan, I can’t really complain. We have had a ton of recent success. But let that be a warning! The good times won’t last forever! Enjoy your 90+ win and playoffs spot every season

If you’d actually read Heidegger, you’d know that every aspect of Dasein is infinitely deferred, because we are the beings-unto-death, with no unmediated access to the ontic.

Heidegger did not write about money, but it too is necessarily, by definition, ‘deferred.’ As money, it circulates endlessly, never alighting upon the Real. Even in an exchange for goods or labor, the recipient of money owns only a representation of a potential reality.

Nah not a Cashman type deadline trade. He’ll overpay by sending some solid prospects for a #3 starter and a solid BP arm which will both flounder in NY before finishing the year on the IL. That way he can blame bad luck for falling short once again. Bringing back Jameson Taillon and getting Neris from the Cubs would be a Cashman move.

Some Tigers fans are unrealistic about how fast Harris should be turning the team around. This is only his 2nd year. I think he’s doing exactly what he should be doing: continuously trying to stockpile and upgrade talent.

You have to pay to watch games on TV even if you live in LA. You have to pay a higher ticket price than anywhere else in MLB after sitting in an hour of traffic to park up that dreadful hill. Most fans get there late and leave early — the LA way. You purchased two Japanese superstars to put butts in the seats and increase your global fanbase. Well done. You saw the Yankees do it for many years and want a piece of the action too. We get it. The roster is full of ringers as the endless funds needed to take on all sorts of contracts is laughable compared to other franchises whose owners supposedly have all the money in the world when you know that in reality the money to spend on players isn’t straight from the owners pocket (unless you’re the Guggenheim family apparently) and rather from TV and marketing revenue. Stop acting like this is some level playing field and the Dodgers are geniuses just because you attached yourselves to their success.

One of the most overated pitchers in the game. He benefited by being in the weakest hitting division in the game. Its not hard to have a low ERA when you are playing agaisnt teams with such low run production. Same reason why Skubal’s era is low. Competition matters

Cleveland, Minnesota and Kansas City are all Top 11 in runs this year.

Also, the Tigers have played White Sox same # as every other team, their season series with CHI is backloaded. Instead DET just finished their season series with Cleveland, one of best offenses in league

So I’m not sure what the point of your post was…other than to highlight your inability to decipher basic team stats, your general ignorance on baseball … or was just a sad troll attempt for any type of attention because mommy ignored you as a child

3-4 AL Central Teams are in the playoffs hunt.
Last time I checked, that was the most competitive Division in the AL and maybe all of baseball.
The Tigers are 7 games out of a playoffs spot and they are winning home and away series against many NL and AL playoffs teams.

Google it. Jack grew up a Dodger fan, pitching in high school at Harvard Westlake in rotation of Max Fried and Lucas Giolito. He always had his best starts pitching at Dodger Stadium when he played for the Cardinals. I’m sure if these next 2 months go well, he’s gonna want to stay at home if the Dodgers offer him a contract.

Overpay!!! In a sellers market the Dodgers took my Tigers to the woodshed and we get two players whom we will probably never see in the lineup and they get the top expiring contract pitcher on the market. And if Flaherty keeps pitching great he will sign a big contract with a legitimate contender next year, like the Dodgers. Frustrated Tigers fan.

Sweeney will probably be in the lineup soon replacing Baez. He looks more like a future backup IF but could be more. Anything is better than Baez.

They didn’t get enough for Flaherty though.

I think they could have gotten a better return for Flahery. Look at the Rogers and Kikuchi returns. The problem with those returns vs what they did get is Sweeney and Liranzo help fill organizational needs at SS and C. The Tigers have OFers, so Loperfido and Stowers aren’t needed. Norby…they could have used him…shift Keith to 1B.

I wonder if Liranzo was the highest FV prospect they could get?

@ Motor. I was shocked by what the Astros gave up for Kikuchi, who is also a rental. I think the Pads (who were coveting Flaherty) would have offered SP Snelling and some other lower tier prospects, and maybe they did, but Snelling isn’t as polished nor highly ranked (anymore) as Liranzo.

Liranzo and Snelling had great years last year but neither is doing as well this year. I like the looks of Liranzo more after reading up on him but I think the return the Tigers got was light. I do like Snelling though and I liked Lesko even more, despite his terrible season.

I think the Tigers waited too long hoping for a better deal and ended up taking the best prospect they could get, but not necessarily the best package.

I am glad that Harris at least had the sense not to accept similar “low ball” offers for Skubal. That is they kind of blunder that can get you fired.

The league appears to be “testing” Harris like they “tested Avila”.

Most of the Tigers players on their next contender are going to have to come though AA Erie and AAA Toledo.

A Ball Lakeland Flying Tigers just won a championship so all is not lost for Tigers fans. The Tigers now have a “Top 10” farm system.

They just have to be careful not to get fleeced in trade deals.

Liranzo has some of the highest exit velocities in the dodgers org and he’s a 20 year old switch hitting catcher. He’d be a top prospect on teams without Rushing and Cartaya ahead of him. I think he led his league in HR last year too. He could turn into something special with the right coaching.. Trey Sweeney is depth but at least he plays middle infield. This trade was done mostly to get a high risk/high reward catching prospects like Thayron into the system.

Remember, ERod hung Harris out to dry. He said he would waive the no trade clause to the Dodgers but when his agent asked for an extension the Dodgers said no. Then ERod said no.

I agree with those here who think other GMs are testing Harris. So far, it doesn’t look like deadline deals are his forte. If he’s going to make a splash in the trade market it’s going to have to be in the offseason.

We have enough prospect currency to pull off a Dombrowski like Cabrera deal. or a Scherzer from Arizona one. Does Harris dare?

I’m all for building a sustainable system but they need to add this offseason to the current team like you and Stymedone said. Show us their Cabrera deal to get the fans excited again. Spend some if that prospect capital. GET A REAL SS WHO CAN HIT (Kim, Adames?). Then why not go get Yandy Diaz….TBs prices were reasonable at the deadline. So the Tigers trade Flaherty for two low rung minor league players and Toronto gets three players for Kikuchi including two who were on Houston’s major league roster??? Kikuchi has an over 6.00 ERA since June and Flaherty ERA is close to 2.00. Harris and Greenberg wait to the end of the deadline and get nothing that can help the roster in the next few years. I am trying to give Harris the benefit of the doubt but we got nothing for Flaherty and Toronto gets three players for a struggling pitcher. I am sure Houston would have definitely traded those three players for a much better pitcher in Flaherty. The Dodgers were desperate for pitching in a sellers market and the Tigers get fleeced.

I’m a jays fan and I was very pleasantly surprised at what the jays got for Kikuchi ,even just the starting pitcher Bloss was good enough IMO. I honestly thought that he would go to the dodgers considering the Japanese connection with not only players but market both local and international. The only thing I could think is not only did the jays get a better offer but maybe the players didn’t like him either. I can’t figure out why the astros would pay more for Kikuchi then they could get Jack for. Kikuchi has durability going for him aswell as being a lefty out of the pen in shorter playoff series which would fit the LAD better but maybe Huston liked that aswell. I really can’t figure this out? Isn’t the Tigers Manager a former Astro? Maybe there is some bad blood somewhere and the deals were different?

Love this deal, Sweeney has gotta be making his MLB debut at SS Thursday, he seems like he could be a solid everyday player. And Liranzo looks like a solid catching prospect. Looks like he struggled a bit this season after hitting 24 homers the year before… but a catcher who hit 24 homers, that’s a strong starting point. Tigers did everything right with Flaherty.

This league is an actual joke. Hard to believe people listen to LA “fans” trying to peddle the narrative that “their favorite team does it too!” I wish the Dodgers had stayed healthy all year so their actual team could fall short of a title because you knew the second they had any adversity (winning your division every year and being up by 6.5 games isn’t enough) they’d buy, buy, and buy some more. Kershaw or Buehler may not even be in the postseason rotation, or maybe Gavin Stone, but who cares when you can just purchase a shiny new toy thanks to your daddies the Guggenheim family who have endless money and get help from the other garbage teams of the league providing you any extra talent you want.

They are the smartest team in baseball and play by the same rules that 30 owners created. Change the rules if you want, but don’t be mad that they are brilliant at raising homegrown talent, retooling players that others gave up on and not overspending on guys like Kikuchi or Adam Jones like others? Smart ass baseball minds! They never panic.

Homegrown talent? When you can buy 70% of your roster how many “homegrown” guys do you actually need to hit on? Only Lux/Smith homegrown from the lineup (Pages/Outman not even playing every day). Rotation currently doesn’t include Buehler, and Kershaw has been signing back up as a FA forever. Treinen, Hudson, Kelly, Brasier all bought. Get that garbage out of here. Just admit that your team has an advantage. Go ahead, be a fan, but stop trying to justify it. It sure as hell isn’t fair, no one said it had to be, but at least acknowledge it.

I’d say Smith, Lux, Pages, Kersh, Buehler, Miller, Stone, May and Graterol are all pretty good “homegrown talent”. I’d say Seager and Bellinger were pretty good even though LAD let others pay more for them. I agree they have advantages, but you discount all of the intelligent stuff they do and you get caught up on money like a jealous B. They’re just smarter. It’s not like SF and TOR didn’t offer Ohtani the same offer. Others try and fail. Keep hating!!

Once again we see how pitiful Harris is. 2 straight years he has one of the top pitchers and barely gets any value from this one. Typical of Harris, at least he didn’t trade for Maton again

First he traded for Maton, Sands and VIERLING. The Vierling piece of that trade has turned out really well so who cares about the other two. They won that trade.

I was initially pissed at the return, and I still think he could have gotten a better return. But…he did get a SS who can likely play now and a catcher of the future who is 50 FV. Two areas that they needed to address got addressed. I have liked Sweeney since he got drafted but he looks the part of a backup IF. I didn’t know much about Liranzo (because I was hoping for Rushing or Cartaya) and did some reading and like what I read. He might end up better than Rushing or Cartaya.

Having said that, they needed to get more. This wasn’t a good enough return for Flaherty. Harris/Greenberg better have a good offseason.

If he re-signs Flaherty this winter because he did him a favor sending him to LA, then it’s a decent trade. He did send him to a team that should have a great chance of getting to the World Series. Maybe he remembers that and signs with Detroit this offseason, but getting Illitch to spend the money might be tough, I wish Jack the best. At least Harris didn’t give Skubal away for nothing!

Good pickups for the Dodgers at a very reasonable price. As we all know, the stretch run will tell the story of whether or not the chemistry works or not. SD and AZ are right there, and have already had the pleasure of beating them the last 2 years.

Outstanding haul by Detroit today. With Madris putting a lock on first, they can bring back someone off the I.L with no problem for now. I’m surprised no one wanted Urschella, but he plays very well for Detroit. 2 big position players is a great pick up. Detroit has three O.F on the I.L, so I hope Carpenter or one of them can learn to play first as they are all left handed hitters.

Exactly…..I had hoped they would sign Flaherty, not Paxton. The lefty or righty issue didn’t matter, IMO. Flaherty was more likely a bounceback candidate at age 28 than Paxton was going to be a solid addition.

Jack Flaherty was average before he started throwing the Roger Beshens Football Slider in May 2018.
That was the FIRST YEAR in his PRO career he could avg over 1 K an IP.
Same for his school buddy Max Fried, Fried for the 1st time in his career found the RB Football Slider and averaged Over a K an IP.
Then Giolito another HS buddy started avg over a K an IP in 2019, He decided to shorten his arm path after learning the RB Football Slider.

When I read that that the Yanks were expecting to acquire a top-tier available starter and trade Nestor, I was almost hoping we’d trade Flaherty to the Yankees so we could have gotten Nestor as part of the return. We have a pretty significant problem right now… we need innings! There’s no timetable on Olsen’s and Manning’s returns from the IL and Mize is out for at least another month. We can’t go another two months doing 4 bullpen games a week. Gonna be a loooong rest of the season.

Flaherty’s back has been an issue of late. While he’s been really good while on the mound, and hasn’t missed more than a couple starts, the fact that he’s been receiving shots for back pain must raise flags and diminish his value as a rental.

You can have the best hand in the house and not know what to do with it and/or how to play it.
This Tigers deal is a big miss for the Tigers Front Office.
They had an All Star top of the rotation starter to deal.
They accepted a couple of “lottery ticket” players deep in the Dodgers farm system?!
They should have insisted on one of the Dodgers major league ready rotation arms in AAA and then another player/prospect with nice upside.

    Great deal for the Dodgers.
Below average deal for the Tigers.

The Tigers would have been better off extending Flaherty like they did years ago did with Fister rather that accept such an low offer for Flaherty.

Go read up on Liranzo. He actually sounds pretty good. He was rated as high as #3 in the Dodgers system according to one prospect evaluation, I think BA listed him at #74 in their top 100 and he has 50 FV. Not a lottery ticket. Still, I think they could have done better for the overall package.

Flaherty wanted to test free agency. At least that is what I read. Nothing saying the Tigers can’t sign him this offeseason.

Obviously no one ponied up the asking price for Skubal so why would they trade him? It just screws the starting staff for next year.

The Dodgers system has been reduced at the upper levels by promotions and many trades.

I had read a little on both the guys they received and they could be diamonds in the rough and/or future trade bait.

The best thing Al Avila did was when he hired Ryan Garko as Director of Player Development. Since then, the Tigers have been trading for and unlocking value in players that other teams did not see like Reese Olson, Gipson-Long Kerry Carpenter and others.

Apparently, the Yankees leaked their questions about Flaherty’s medicals that tanked his value, according to reports.

Flaherty has been traded and signed as a FA before and no other team thought his medicals posed any big problems?!

The Orioles made a huge mistake in not ponying up for Skubal.
Could be another “one and out” of the AL playoffs for them.
Harris was smart in not taking a “low ball” offer for Skubal.

Is this Cashman’s NYY’s way of trying to drive Flaherty’s trade value down?!

Or are there real concerns about his medicals?!

Liranzo is worth more than the pick. He had a wicked year last year and so-so this year. I think that BA had him in their top 100 around #74.

Sweeney should play SS now just so we don’t have to look at Baez strike out anymore.

But I think they could have gotten a better overall package.

Although I feel like the Tigers didn’t get that one good prospect I was hoping for, I’m glad Jack Flaherty didn’t break down as he does every year. For all we know, Flaherty pitches a few games more then ends up on the Dodgers’ IL before seasons’ end.

I’m not a scout. Don’t get caught up with the sports talk radio people. They don’t know anything about anything and have ZERO accountability for sharing their mindlessness with the public. When it comes to trades, it’s still the ‘Rule of Seven’. It takes seven years to evaluate a trade.

He has been the subject of hardly any high-profile arrests, as few as none. He says the right things about ownership. He is a skilled puppet, doing what he is told, rattles no Tiger cages,

What the Tigers did for Flaherty was stand him up heading downhill in his delivery. He had the classic backward bend and the back will be okay with that until one bright afternoon when somebody didn’t take their stretching seriously. Everybody has heard of “muscle memory”…well, the muscles remember what was done to them too and won’t tolerate repeated insults. They will produce pain and stiffness and hitting them with cortisone only masks the problem. Flaherty’s tenure in Detroit was mostly successful as long as they kept an eye on him and let him know between innings if the was falling back into old habits trying to throw harder. We’ll see if the Dodgers spot it and how diligent they will be monitoring him. Given the result of the final few minutes, I doubt if Harris told them how to keep Jack healthy. He’s where he belongs, where he came from, and I hope it works out for him. And maybe Pee Wee found a sleeper who will bloom in Detroit down the road….we’ll see.
