The Opener: NLDS, ALDS, Rojas

By Nick Deeds | October 9, 2024 at 8:50am CDT

Here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world today:

1. Phillies, Dodgers facing elimination:

Both NLDS series are on the verge of ending in an upset after the Phillies and Dodgers each fell to their divisional rivals last night, leaving them just one loss from elimination. The Phillies will send lefty Ranger Suarez (3.46 ERA) to the mound in Queens with their season on the line, while the Mets will hope to knock their rival out of the race with veteran southpaw Jose Quintana (3.75 ERA).

Meanwhile, a tense Dodgers-Padres series continues tonight with right-hander Dylan Cease (3.47 ERA) on the mound for San Diego on just three days of rest. Cease started Game 1 for the Padres but was pulled after struggling through 3 1/3 innings where he surrendered five runs on six hits and a pair of walks with two strikeouts. The Dodgers have not yet announced who they’ll counter Cease with, but all hands will be on deck in a potential elimination game.

2. ALDS kicks back into gear:

After an off-day yesterday, both ALDS series — each tied at 1-1 — are back in action today. Guardians right-hander Alex Cobb will take the mound in Detroit after making just three starts this season due to hip, shoulder and finger injuries. The Tigers have not yet announced a starter for today’s game. Thus far, they’ve operated with ace Tarik Skubal as their only true starter as the rest of the pitching staff takes on more flexible roles as directed by manager A.J. Hinch in what the skipper has termed “pitching chaos.”

Later in the evening, the Yankees will send right-hander Clarke Schmidt (2.85 ERA in 16 starts) to the mound in Kansas City opposite veteran righty Seth Lugo (3.00 ERA in 33 starts). Schmidt’s only postseason experience is an 11.57 ERA in three appearances out of the bullpen back in 2022 while Lugo is coming off a solid performance against the Baltimore in the Wild Card Series, where he pitched 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball and struck out six Orioles against just one walk.

3. Rojas day-to-day headed into Game 3:

Turning back to the NLDS, the Dodgers may face elimination with their lineup at less than full strength. Veteran shortstop Miguel Rojas has been playing through an adductor injury this postseason, and he was forced to leave last night’s game in the third inning after aggravating the injury. The shortstop told reporters (including The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya) after the game that he’ll need to see how he feels today before he’ll know if he can play in what could be the final game of L.A.’s season. Rojas noted that in the past the next day is “more painful” than the initial problem when it comes to aggravating his adductor injury. In the event that Rojas isn’t available, the club seems likely to turn to Tommy Edman at shortstop, moving him in from center field where he would then be replaced by Andy Pages. First baseman Freddie Freeman has also been playing through an ankle injury that has left him visibly hobbled on the field, as seen last night when he limped to the dugout after hitting a single and being lifted for a pinch-runner.

Did anyone have the Phillies getting eliminated by the Mets when their NLDS match-up was finalized?

I had both the Padres and Mets in the playoffs but for the Mets I had them in for the wrong reasons. I thought Batty would emerge as a very solid player, JD Martinez would have a bigger impact and Senga was going to lead the staff. Padres just had a good team and Preller hit a slam dunk in the Soto deal.

No, but if the trend stays course the Mets should win the WS. When the Brewers make the playoffs they determine who makes the WS. Everyone that beats them in the playoffs makes the WS. Then it is 3 WS wins and 1 WS loss. The Dbacks beat the Brewers last year and lost the WS setting up the Mets to win.

They did go 6-7 against them this year so pretty much evenly matched. Underdogs sure, but it’s not a huge upset if it happens.

I had the Mets and Tigers winning their WC series. I spoke with a Mets fan at a Jays game about a month ago and they really sold me on the team. I also picked them to win their series against Philly before it started. A NY team will likely make the finals. I had picked LAD over SD and KC to lose the WC so I’m not going to say I’m clairvoyant 😉

sad tormented: One thing the Padres and Mets will have to stifle is their opponents turning it up a notch to force game five. Padres, Tigers, Royals and, if there’s going to be one NY team, I hope it’s the Mets. I’ll always pull for the Mets for what they did to the cubs in 1969.

I see the Dodgers still having about a 25% chance of winning the divisional series against the Padres. I would not put it past them for their hitters to carry them.

In March, I had picked Tatis to be the regular season MVP. Obviously, his regular season was not near that level and also included injuries. But he is displaying in the postseason the talent that makes him truly elite.

A lot of pressure this next game on LAD, especially if Freeman can’t go with his early exit from last game. Hoping Cease can have a do-over. Thinking LAD should have spent 2B last offseason for some reliable pitching.

Then the players on the Phillies & Dodgers need to pull up their big boy pants and actually play some winning baseball. I think they lost their motivation with all the cash they’re rolling around in. If they don’t advance, it’s because they had no desire to win.

“I think they lost their motivation with all the cash they’re rolling around in. If they don’t advance, it’s because they had no desire to win.”

Some guys get paid and do lose motivation after getting paid.

Some guys get paid and still play hard.

          This happens in every sport.

Ohtani Betts Freeman definitely don’t have the same energy Tatis Jr Machado Profar and Merrill have. And it shows.

Not saying they’re lazy but they definitely don’t seem as motivated and it shows.

Some players get paid and get lazy unmotivated
Some players get paid and still give it their all
          And there’s guys between 0 and 60
          That’s facts

I’m determining motivation based on more than just one post season appearance for betts freeman Tatis jr machado Profar etc.

Dodgers didn’t seem all that motivated from betts freeman in 2022 or 2023. They definitely don’t seem motivated by betts freeman and ohtani this year plus others.

Padres were clearly motivated by Tatis jr machado in 2022. And definitely motivated by them this year.

No need to get your panties in a bunch when ppl call you out for being wrong.

          I Believe:
There is a difference between lack of motivation and lack of performance. The one is not necessarily an indicator of the other. To attribute a lack of motivation to any of these superior players, Dodgers, Padres or otherwise indicates a complete lack of understanding of the kind of human it requires to excel at the highest level. Yes they get paid ridiculous sums of money but by and large they are not motivated by the money. They are motivated by their desire to excel in their chosen professions. I venture to say people like Betts and Freeman and Ohtani, whom you referenced, are more motivated by Tatis and Machado than they are by other factors, especially financial reward. All the motivation in the world isn’t going to help you hit a nasty slider. Bat speed and a great eye will.

There’s no sense of urgency. You’d be hard pressed to find instances where they’re motivated to over come adversity. Esp given their payroll. You’re paying the best of the best whether it’s free agents trades home grown talent and there’s no leadership for when the going gets tough when someone punches you in the mouth.

David Robert’s shat himself over a ball bouncing into the dugout good lord.

Celebrating when thing go right is easy

But they fold when it gets tough.

Why the dodgers haven’t won anything since the 80s.

This NYM team reminds me so much like the 2011 St Louis Cardinals team. They play loose, for each other and have been amazing late in games with clutch hitting or pitching. They are riding a hot wave and it’s must see TV with them late in games when the score is tied or they are down.

None of the “bye” teams came out cold like they did last season when it was very apparent. This time Cleveland scored 7 runs in Game One, Yankees scored 6, Dodgers scored 7…so it’s not a narrative to be pushing this postseason that the bye week hurt any body. And I haven’t heard one player or coach or manager complain about it.

I’d prefer if MLB shortened wild card to one game series. That would give top 2 seeds a big advantage, and that way they don’t sit for a week. Then make division series 7 game series. No series should be 5 game series.

John Smoltz after {Tatis Jr’s} 3rd series homerun: “He’s San Diego’s Shohei Ohtani!”

    Tatis’ postseason stats: .500/571/1.417/1.988

    Ohtani’s: .231/.231/.462/.492

Uh, no, no he’s not. Ironically, even when the opposing team is jacking HRs Smoltz is still bringing up Ohtani, who’s on the bench flipping his hair back and forth.

Just goes to show you that you can have the most expensive player on the field and it still doesn’t matter. Too many overpaid players not contributing when it matters. Sure, 50-50 in the regular season but you’re hitting .231 when it matters the most?

Another example is when he was talking about Ohtani’s fly out to CF and talking about how amazing it was because “most people would’ve given up on the pitch”.

Ohtani is an amazing talent, no doubt. The LAD are an awesome team, who have some really ill-times injuries that are killing them, unfortunately. But, Smoltz’ commentary is off, imho, and it actually takes away from Ohtani’s accomplishments when he’s tossing out superlatives for a fly out.

Furthermore, without taking your privilege into consideration, have you ever thought that there might be blind people who are listening to the descriptions of the game, or is it only sighted people that complain.

To mute your speakers, you can click the sound icon in the Windows Notification Area of the Taskbar. You can also mute your mic in Microsoft Teams by selecting the mic icon in your taskbar or pressing the Windows + alt + K keys

Travis, I don’t care about the stats themselves, but when the announcer can’t give credit to anyone without bringing up an uninvolved player who is not currently performing in the series, it detracts from the player.

Trust me, Judge isn’t performing either, so I get the small sample size, but Tatis’ series has been amazing and he deserves the credit.

        Travis:

        A) I’m not criticizing Ohtani – he’s a phenomenal player

        B) He is not “the best player” statistically or otherwise. One of the best? Sure, he certainly is.

        C) I’d argue Tatis is also one of the best players in the league. But why talk about Ohtani during Tatis’ ABs when Tatis is hitting HRs (and Ohtani is hitting fly outs?) I don’t get it as a neutral observer.

Of course they will talk about Ohtani, Betts, Freeman, etc. But he constantly talks about Ohtani when he’s uninvolved in the plays occurring on the field. It’s weird and poorly timed commentary, especially when Ohtani’s not having a good series.

Another example was when Darvish was pitching an amazing game, yet Smoltz was discussing Ohtani, who was sitting on the bench. I don’t recall hearing a game where they referenced a player so often who wasn’t doing anything.

Travis: I stand corrected. If you meant the NL, he is the best hitter. If he pitched, I would agree he’s the best player, but he’s a DH. Next year he very well may pitch, and then he rightfully should be considered for the best player again. But he doesn’t play the field at all, and hasn’t all year.

I guess it’s semantics and just a difference in perspective on whether he’s the best player in the NL right now; but Smoltz is just really bad.

Here’s another one for you: Smoltz said Ohtani is “HUGE, and looks like a linebacker.” He doesn’t.

Potentially, and if pitching, he very well could become the best player in MLB. Now back to reality…Maybe you haven’t heard, but most failures to return to form after 2nd TJS happen once the pitcher actually starts pitching again. Like in major league games. Roughly 95% never return to form. Give me 5 great pitchers who have? I can wait for your answer. And clown? Why those are fightin’ words boiy ! I’ve only heard Curtis Granderson and Chris Archer do post-game commentary but I think they’d great. Ironically enough, I thought Aaron Boone did well as a commentator, I never figured he’d get the Yankees job straight out of the booth lol

I will say these ALDS games between Yankees and Royals, with Bob Costas and Ron Darling, not so great. Costas is very boring, Darling is okay but Bob’s bringing it down, just my opinion.

Bob Costas goes for the very low-key standup comedy routine. But he’s so dry and deadpan nobody realizes he’s trying to be funny …I think he got Darling to fake laugh twice in this evenings game. It’s an experiment in baseball play-by-play commentary that has failed miserably. (On top of that , Costas eyesite is so pore he kept misjudging outs for hits and got overly excited for nothing.)

League MVP voting is completed at the end of the regular season. Even if that’s not the case, it’s hard to argue against Ohtani’s numbers and him achieving something that’s never been done before in any regular season.

Lindor had another great season, but Ohtani had an even more unprecedented career year. Ohtani flirted with a triple crown so that’s also a factor.

Freddie Freeman looks more like Bill Buckner than Kirk Gibson.

Nah, like Gibson who was injured rather than Buckner who was healthy.

Both Buckner and Gibson had their best professional days as Dodgers.

Mets as the wild card team beating the top seeds as the Phillies and d backs did last year. The Mets lost verlander & Scherzer from last year, who were mostly injured anyway. Their replacements have preformed better.
Dodgers no surprise of an almost early exit. Roberts runs his players into ground by mid September . More concerned with division titles than World Series.

If you’ve got players running into the ground, wouldn’t it be in a team’s best interest to win the division to secure a first-round bye so players can rest up? I don’t any team begins a season aiming to be a wildcard seed.

Dodgers do not run their pitchers into the ground now, that was the Lasorda era. Now Dodgers pull pitchers after 5 innings in regular season. The problem to the extent that there is one is that they signed elite pitchers who were high injury risks like Glasnow and Kershaw. Buehler and Miller did not rebound after injuries. If from among those four, two had been healthy and good, the scenario would be different. On the offseason, the Dodgers need to sign a number four starter who is not elite but durable and reliable. With their offense, a guy who can take the mound and regularly go six innings allowing three runs would be useful.

Dodgers ran their pitchers into the ground last year and this year. 5 innings and they still get injured? Ouch

Padres have the best team, Phillies have the best starting pitching, Mets have the MOJO, Dodgers have the stars and pressure, Yanks have the stars and pressure, Cleveland has the overall pitching.

Short of the bullpen Cleveland has 0 pitching. One established stater and two scrap heap guys they’ll they’re rolling the dice with. Saw what happens in game 2 when you push your bullpen.

Padres are a great team. Their postseason play has been fierce. The thought of the Dodgers season ending tonight is beyond distressful. I want the Dodgers to hang on against Cease tonight so we have the glory of a game 5 on Friday. At that point, if the Pads grab the victory, so be it. It has been a terrific season for both of these teams. Phils & Mets too.

@Mojo. Same to ya. Pads need to win tonight on Cease short rest and that will be really difficult. LA doing a BP game is no disadvantage in my mind since their pen has been lights out (especially compared to SPs). If Pads lose tonight, you guys are heavy favorites again. This is crazy stuff man. good luck

I don’t think you can say “heavy favorites”with either of these teams but I do relish the idea of a game 5 at the Ravine. The SD crowd is a factor and kudos to them. But aside from the few bad apples that were a distraction in game 2, the LA crowd is also a factor. I am not worried about a bullpen game. As you noted these two pens are stellar. Well you didn’t mention the Pads pen but I know you agree. 6 hours to go. Will feel like 6 days. Enjoy.

It’s deja vu all over again. At the very least, they gotta let go of Prior. I don’t remember Honeycutt having this many issues with the health of the staff. Prior is just turning all the pitchers’ careers into his own….

That is a great idea Toupee. You’ve finally put your finger on the pitching injury epidemic. Firing Prior will probably also save the likes of Strider and Musgrove and Bieber and a hundred other severely injured pitchers.

The problem with a pen game is that you are running 7-8 guys out there and you hope none of them has their “blow up” night like 1 ip guys tend to have every 6-7 appearances to keep their ERA up around 3.00.

The more guys used the more likely someone give up 3/4 runs.

          Dodgers Bullpen game record:

          2024 – 8 games, 5-3 record, 2.92 ERA

          2022-24 — 24 games, 16-8 record, 3.66 ERA

          We’ll see

All 8 teams in the DS with the exception of probbably the Guards and KC in that order has a high payroll, so is not about who spent the most, but it shows that more times than fewer when an organization spents, there’s a good chance that they’ll still be playing deep unto October. Enjoy the rest of the PS, GO YANKEES!!!!

    Some comments and some questions.

Hearing and reading some interesting things about Juan Soto.

We have read on here about the Nationals being involved in the bidding potentially and heard today that they are preparing an offer expected to be in 12/520 range.

We know that the Mets and Yankees have been called the favorites to land him and read on Yahoo Sports and Sporting News that Cohen is considering a bid over $600 million that would keep Soto a Met through his age 40 season. So around 15/600.

Will the Yankees go that high after Hal’s comment that the current level of payroll is not sustainable?

The Phillies are also rumored to be ready to be in the bidding. That gibes with the way Dombrowski’s M.O. Schwarber, Turner, Soto, Harper as the 1st 4 in that lineup is scary,

I don’t think the Dodgers will be in on him just based on their CBT Payroll already being projected to be over the 2nd CBT penalty threshold and it being their 5th year over the threshold. But who knows how much they are willing to spend.

Then today I started reading from many sources that the Blue Jays are expected to go all in on Soto. They reportedly offered Ohtani a very similar $700 million deferred deal to what he eventually accepted from the Dodgers. NJ.com, Fansided, and even the NY times carried that story. Here is one of those articles: nj.com/yankees/2024/10/friend-of-yankees-juan-soto…

So where do YOU think Soto is going to land and for how much?

I don’t think LAD or NYY will go for it forCBT reasons, especially given Soto won’t likely do a deferred deal like Ohtani did. Of the two the Yankees surprise me the least, but if one of them does, wow! That will rock the league a bit. But who else might win his bidding? Nats and BJs are plausible I guess. Maybe SFG? One of the Texas teams? Wild thought: Mariners?

I agree that Soto is not doing a deferred deal like Ohtani. He just does not have the off the field earnings. About 1/12th of Ohtani’s estimated $35-40 million this season.

Do you think the Yankees are more likely to go all in on Soto if they miss the WS? Or if they win it?

If he’s a WS hero, pressure goes up to sign maybe? But I can also see them waving white flag and say mission accomplished, then stay within reason of the CBT instead. Fun to speculate

I wouldn’t read much into the rumors until Soto declines his QO from the Yankees. That NJ.com article could very well be Boras priming the market for his client.

Winning the WS provides the Yankees a hefty revenue bump so it would be beneficial in their pursuit to re-sign him.

It appears that the anaemic offense of the Phillies didn’t handle the 5 days off very well. Boo hoo, and cry me a river.
