Poll: Where Will Jurickson Profar Sign?

By Leo Morgenstern | January 23, 2025 at 12:11pm CDT

After more than a decade in the majors, Jurickson Profar finally lived up to his top prospect billing in 2024, his age-31 season. The switch-hitter slashed .280/.380/.459 with 24 home runs, 10 stolen bases, and an NL-leading 18 hit-by-pitches. He did just about everything well, posting a high walk rate, a low strikeout rate, and above-average power numbers. His 139 wRC+ ranked 15th among qualified batters, while his 4.3 FanGraphs WAR placed him among the top 25 position players in either league. Even better, his Statcast expected metrics matched his actual output; his .364 xwOBA put him in the 92nd percentile of MLB hitters. With numbers like that, it was no surprise that Profar started for the NL All-Stars in the summer and collected a Silver Slugger at the end of the year.

Profar turns 32 next month, and his age, along with his spotty track record from 2012-23, will limit his earning potential in free agency. That’s why he ranked below fellow outfielders Anthony Santander and Teoscar Hernández on MLBTR’s Top 50 Free Agents list, despite outperforming both of them in wRC+ and fWAR last season. Nonetheless, the possibility that he could repeat his All-Star performance in 2025 should entice several suitors, and for that reason, Profar is easily the top outfielder still available on the free agent market. What’s more, his ability to hit from both sides of the plate, along with the fact that he is not saddled with the qualifying offer or seeking a particularly long-term commitment (he’s eyeing a three-year deal) should make him a good fit for any team in need of an impact bat in a corner outfield spot.

Indeed, with Santander off the market, the Profar rumor mill has picked up in recent days. According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, “a number of teams” are interested in his services, including the Blue Jays and Astros. After signing Santander, Toronto is set in the corner outfield department with Santander in left field and George Springer in right. However, the Jays could still use another bat, and they could facilitate the addition of Profar by rotating Profar, Santander, and Springer between the corner outfield and the DH spots. GM Ross Atkins recently made it clear the Blue Jays have money left to spend this winter as they strive to return to contention after a disappointing 2024. There is no doubt that Profar would help them move toward that goal.

As for the Astros, they could desperately use some more thump in the outfield after trading Kyle Tucker to the Cubs. With manager Joe Espada on the record that Houston would like to limit Yordan Alvarez’s playing time in the field, the club’s current outfield options include Jake Meyers, Chas McCormick, Mauricio Dubón, and Taylor Trammell. As I wrote back in December, “It’s not hyperbole to say that could be one of the worst offensive outfields among contending teams.” Thus, it’s easy to see how Profar fits into the picture. The only question is if GM Dana Brown has the payroll flexibility to make such a signing. Earlier this month, KPRC’s Ari Alexander reported the Astros were “unlikely” to sign Santander because it would require a contract that would put them “well into the competitive balance tax for the second consecutive season.” Profar won’t command quite as high of a salary, but the Astros are already above the first luxury tax threshold as it is (per RosterResource). So, Brown might need to make a trade to clear some payroll before he can pursue any more free agent additions. Offloading Ryan Pressly’s $14MM salary from the books would surely help.

While Feinsand did not name any other suitors, the Royals are one more team that has been linked to Profar this winter. Joel Sherman of the New York Post connected the two sides back in November, writing that the Royals had “their eye on” the left fielder. However, there hasn’t been much smoke to that fire since, and Sherman’s report came before Kansas City traded for Jonathan India. Still, the Royals continue to seek another impact bat for their lineup. Although reporting has suggested they’d prefer to work on the trade market – they inquired about Nolan Arenado earlier in the offseason – signing Profar is another route they could take.

Two further landing spots to consider are the Angels and Tigers, both of whom were reportedly interested in Santander before he signed with the Blue Jays. Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press described the Angels as one of the “frontrunners” to sign Santander, while Jon Heyman of the New York Post also mentioned Santander when he linked the Angels to Pete Alonso, acknowledging that the outfielder was a better positional fit. The Angels currently have Taylor Ward and Jo Adell penciled into the corner outfield spots, but Ward is a potential trade candidate (even if rumors of his availability may have been overblown) and Adell has hardly done enough to warrant a guaranteed starting job. Anthony Franco recently wrote about what the Angels could do next in a post for MLBTR Front Office subscribers, and he touched on Profar as a potential target.

Meanwhile, Petzold described Santander as a potential backup plan for the Tigers if they could not sign third baseman Alex Bregman. Considering that talks between Bregman and the Tigers are reportedly “at a standstill,” perhaps Detroit will pivot to Profar. After all, if the Tigers had interest in one switch-hitting corner outfielder, it stands to reason they’d have interest in another. While Riley Greene has one corner outfield spot on lock, manager A.J. Hinch could play Profar in the other corner. In addition, Profar could occasionally platoon at DH with Kerry Carpenter, who has struggled against left-handed pitching so far in his young career.

It would also be foolish to count out a reunion between Profar and the Padres. San Diego clearly likes what he brings to the table, having acquired him four separate times, first in a trade and then as a free agent in 2021, ’23, and ’24.  Moreover, Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller worked in the Rangers’ international scouting department back when the team first signed Profar in 2009. It’s hard to imagine Preller could have lost interest now, given that Profar is coming off the best season of his career. On top of that, the Padres certainly still have space for him, having made no moves as of yet to replace his bat in the lineup. The big question, however, is if San Diego can afford to pay what Profar is seeking. The Padres are reportedly trying to reduce their payroll from its current $208MM projection (per RosterResource), which means they might need to offload some salary before considering any upgrades in free agency.

One more team that showed interest in Santander this winter was the Red Sox, but Chris Cotillo of MassLive suggests Boston is not actively pursuing Profar. That makes sense in light of manager Alex Cora’s recent comments that he hopes to use Masataka Yoshida in the outfield more often; Boston’s outfield picture is already quite crowded. In addition to Yoshida, the Red Sox have a pair of young, talented corner outfielders in Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu. They also plan to use Ceddanne Rafaela as an outfielder “as much as possible” instead of shuttling him back and forth between shortstop and center field. On top of that, the Red Sox have top prospect Roman Anthony to consider. The promising outfielder could be ready for his MLB debut at some point in 2025.

Meanwhile, the Yankees and Mets were both serious suitors for Hernández earlier this winter, but the Yankees filled their hole in the outfield with Cody Bellinger, while the Mets presumably addressed that need by signing Jesse Winker. Other contenders that have already addressed needs in the corner outfield include the Orioles, Phillies, Cubs, and Dodgers. Notably, the Braves are one team not on that list. While they have not been linked to any notable free agent outfielders so far this winter, they were thought to be exploring the outfield market back in November. They could certainly use another outfielder if Ronald Acuña Jr. opens the season on the injured list, and even once Acuña returns, they might prefer an upgrade over Jarred Kelenic. According to RosterResource, their projected payroll currently sits about $31MM below last year’s final figure, which should give them plenty of flexibility to offer Profar the kind of contract he’s looking for.

So, where do MLBTR readers think Profar will ultimately end up? Have your say in the poll below:

no shot, they are very transparently focusing on the bullpen for any remaining moves. I would ask any Reds fan looking for outfield help where you see the weak link. Steer and Friedl to me are locks, and between Fraley, Fairchild, Benson, Hinds, Dunn, Hurtubise, and Rodriguez there is a big league RF, either individually or in the aggregate. That’s without even venturing into the McLain as CF mythology.

Until MLB grows a set and realizes it’s best for the sport for all thirty clubs to have similar opportunities. What made the 2003 and 2004 ALCS so special is because the Sox and Yankees hadn’t faced each other before outside of 78 in such meaningful moments. If the Dodgers get to the WS each year, outside of Dodger fans and those for the opponent, who’s watching?

The Mariners have made it abundantly clear that they don’t want to spend the money to be in contention for titles. They won’t be making any meaningful additions to the offense through free agency. They have passed up multiple opportunities to address the teams needs, this off season, and over the past couple years.

They’ll just run it back with this squad, then re-assess at the deadline. In fairness, their deadline activity is always way more exciting than their offseason activity (Castillo, Arozarena, etc.) so let’s hope that continues to be the case.

They can’t seriously start the season with this roster of infielders and get away with it.

It’s risky heading into a season with a reliance on the deadline to address the shortcomings they already know they have. Prices will be higher and the competition with be fiercer.

It’s entirely possible they would prefer to see what they have in prospects like Young and Locklear at that point.

So, I think we will see another addition or two. I don’t expect household names. But really, they need five position players.

Yep, and given the M’s absolutely need for offense, I think most teams are willing to wait until we overpay out of sheer desperation. Getting a little late in the process to move an arm, so I think any upgrade would be marginal at best at this point.

Myaccount, I certainly want them to surprise us, but I’m not holding out any hope. They’ve actually subtracted from their terrible offense, this off-season, instead of improving it.
Ownership doesn’t want to spend money, so there is no real hope for improvement

Any team that signs this bench player based on last years carer numbers will regret it. If the Tigers need a RH OF, (yes I know he can switch), they would be better off signing a platoon player, or actually signing a 3B so Vierling could play his best position.

Profar was without question the best bargain FA signing last year in all of MLB.

He’s a Padre at heart, been working out with his lil’ brother Tatis all winter, and I’m convinced he won’t be nearly as successful playing anywhere else.

Profar had the best stretch of his career through first half of last year, with a ridiculous number of game-winning and clutch hits. Then returned to his norm in the second half. He’s a great teammate and it would be perfect to have him back in LF with the Pads. But he’s probably not going to be worth 3/40 or more, especially with that nagging chronic knee issue. Some team will sign him for that or more I’ll be glad Jurickson finally gets paid.

Eh, even from Aug 11 to the end of the 2024 season Profar’s OPS was above .700. Not great, admittedly, but it’s not like he fell through the floor and I haven’t seen clear evidence this was other than the random placement of his worst weeks rather than a return to established levels of weaker performance.

The .250 BABIP August 11 on, suggests a rebound, though the .321 BABIP through August 10 probably suggests the opposite given Profar’s career BABIP of .271.

Normalize his 2024 BABIP in the context of his numbers from 2021 on and he’s not nearly as good as his slash line, but it’s not as if his 2024 was all luck.

I’d be more chary of his below average defense everywhere, which with normal luck plus age-related decline puts even 3/40m on the high side.

      While he didn’t have a 146 OPS+ in the 2nd half, it was 123 OPS+. Still better than his career 92 OPS+ prior to 2024 and 109 OPS+ as a Padres prior to 2024.

I think that performance equal to his 113 OPS+ and 1.5 WAR average with the Padres is more likely going forward than another 3.6 WAR season.

So what is that worth for a 32 year old player? Somewhere around what the Padres are rumored to have offered, 1 year at $8 million with an option year. In this market maybe he will get a small amount more but the dearth of offers seems to indicate that the rumors of a possible 3/45 deal far overshot the mark.

I want to amend that. After looking at his stats a little more I realized that the Padres placed Profar in LF full time in 2022 for the 1st time. He had a 3.0 WAR that season. Then Melvin didn’t want him back in 2023 and he signed with the Rockies as a free agent. In 2024, back in his happy place in LF in Petco, Profar put up a 3.6 WAR. Maybe that is who he really is as a LF and teams recognize that. Does that mean he will get that 3/45 deal after all?

The Giants could use a switch hitting DH who can also play the OF and emergency 2B. Profar has had success in the NL West so the ballparks shouldn’t be an issue.
The flip is who to remove from the 40 man. Wilmer is an option but he can’t be traded without his consent (5/10 rights). Villar is out of options but he does have good power and can play all the infield sans SS. Encarnacion is intriguing as a OF/1B option with power. It’s probably Villar who SFG could flip to Seattle as they need some cheap power at 3B.

They just have to look at his brief time playing in the mother of all hitters parks (COL) to see he has zero interest in playing anywhere but SD.

Shocked the Padres are leading the poll. The Padres have multiple holes to fill and not enough money to fill them.

Maybe the Astros if they trade Pressly but why the heck didn’t the Astros just keep Tucker?

Most of the big spenders have spent. Good luck Profar.

The Astros turned 1 year of Tucker, who they were never going to resign, into 3 years of Isaac Paredes, 5 years of Hayden Wesneski, and 6 (or almost 7 if they play service time games) years of Cam Smith.

It was a pretty great move for the Astros.

Flock as a confused Orioles fan you don’t understand what a win now team is supposed to do. They are supposed to win. Losing Tucker hurts their chances of winning in 2025.

You are extremely linear (and limited) in your way of thinking about roster construction.

Trading 1 expensive year of a guy who was 100% gone at season’s end for several players who can potentially help extend their window was very shrewd, especially considering their reported financial constraints.

And again, it is “Floch,” not “Flock.” With an H, not a K. It is not a reference to birds, despite my Orioles fandom.

That ONE YEAR could be the last time the Astros are a contender. I don’t think the Astros are extending their windows at all i think it’s closing rapidly. Valdez is a free agent at seasons end doubtful he’s coming back. Altuve is in the twilight of his career. And if they are trading Tucker why not keep trading guys? Even with Smith they have a terrible farm system

          You don’t get it

And again it’s autocorrect dipstick. Get over yourself.

No, you clearly don’t get it and you always seem to go well out of your way to demonstrate that. MLB FOs have to operate within the constraints of reality and sometimes reality forces you to do things you might not actually want to do. Tucker is great but he’s also gone after 2025, and in all likelihood, the 3rd round draft pick they would get for him will not become a player as good as Isaac Paredes (much less Tucker himself) and also would require several years to even reach the majors.

So they accepted reality and turned Tucker’s final year of control into 3 years of an all star 3B who will absolutely thrive in their ballpark thanks to an extremely shallow LF, plus a decent pitcher with 5 years of control and a very good prospect who has already reached AA. Did it make them a bit worse in 2025? Yes, it did, but it also made them better in 2026 and 2027.

And it’s not my fault you’re too lazy to proofread your posts.

He could be gone after 2025. Why sacrifice the 2025 season when you are in win now mode?

You don’t get it. You gotta pick a lane if you really want to win it all. Exactly what the Orioles should be doing but they can’t figure it out either.

The Astros were never going to give Tucker 8-10 years and $400+ million in free agency, especially when money is already reportedly tight, so this would have been his last year there. No “could be” about it.

And they didn’t sacrifice the 2025 season, they got back 2 immediate contributors, including a 2024 all star in Paredes.

It has nothing to do with if they were going to sign him or not. It’s about 2025. Their window is closing and frankly with that trade they probably just closed it.

I think that move has a much greater chance of extending their window than closing it, and their FO clearly felt the same way.

They still have Yordan, Diaz, Altuve, Walker, Paredes, Pena, Valdez, Kikuchi, Brown, Hader, etc. They’re still the team to beat in the AL West.

So many players waiting until the last minute to make a decision. Is it the players? owners? agents? Who is too blame. Baseball needs to enforce some kind of deadline possibly February 1st or something. The off season and the winter meetings are so anticlimactic now.

I think he’ll eventually find his way back to the Padres. He’s had a nice career resurgence there and it’s probably no coincidence his new career best season came playing for Bob Melvin (as was his previous best in Oakland). Maybe backload a multi-year deal so the expensive years come as other high salaries are coming off the books

I mean, I know everyone was expected to sign with the Jays this offseason, but this does seem like a realistic target for them. DH, OF and can play 3rd in a pinch (a weak spot for the Jays already), probably comes at a reasonable number on a 2-3 year contract.

    Reply
    • Canuckleball

No he can’t play 3rd. It’s been over half a decade since the last time he played 3rd. He’s an outfielder and a DH.

His career pattern also says he’s due for a colossal collapse year, so the Jays and pretty much everyone else should probably be wary.

While he has worked hard and seems to be a good teammate, he is not a big money guy and whoever gives him big money is asking for trouble. He was heavily overpaid with his initial contract with the Padres and didn’t really pay for himself. One good year with the Padres after returning is still trying to balance out the account from his first contract period.

He still owes the Padres, he would be wise to sign for a reasonable price and stick around and ride that wave into the sand. I say that because the Padres are not going to be getting any better. They shot their wad and flaccidity is on its way.

I voted “another team” specially the Yankees. Profit is 3b/of and a lefty bay. He can play 3b shifting jazz to 2b or spell in lf on days where bellinger spells goldy at first. Plus it gives the Yankees some grit and bay to ball skills. The problem is they’ve gone cheap again or they are after someone higher profile.
