Here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day today:
1. Gore to return to Nats
The Nationals placed left-hander MacKenzie Gore on the injured list a couple of weeks ago due to inflammation in his throwing shoulder. Thankfully, he’s coming back after a minimal stint and will start today’s game. Reliever Orlando Ribalta has been optioned as the corresponding move for Gore, per Mark Zuckerman of MASNsports.com. The Nats aren’t playing for much at this part of the schedule but it’s nice for the club and for Gore that he’s getting back on the mound before the winter kicks in. That will at least provide some assurance that nothing is lingering into the offseason. Gore is a speculative trade candidate this winter since he’s down to two remaining years of club control and the Nats don’t seem close to contending. His health is therefore of interest to other clubs around the league as well.
2. Detmers injured?
Angels lefty Reid Detmers departed yesterday’s game with an apparent injury. Per Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register, the southpaw said afterwards that he wasn’t in pain but his arm felt “dead” on the outside of his elbow. He’s getting an MRI today. Detmers is having a really good season out of the bullpen. The Halos will have to decide this winter whether to keep him in a relief role or stretch him back out as a starter next year. Perhaps the outcome of this MRI will play a role in that decision.
3. Mets sliding
As of a few weeks ago, it looked like the National League playoff race would be a real snooze. Going into the day on September 3rd, the Mets had the final Wild Card spot. The Reds and the Giants were each five games back. Fast forward to today and the Mets still have that final playoff spot but the situation is far less cozy. They have lost five in a row, which has shrunk their lead over the Reds and Giants to just two games, with the Diamondbacks and Cardinals also in the mix. It doesn’t get easier from here, as the Mets take on Jesús Luzardo and the Phillies today. The subsequent six games are also against tough teams, as the Mets host the Rangers and Padres for three each.

Big shoutout to the Yankees best reliever, Austin Slater. It was a very nice deadline pick up for the Yankees. Guy’s probably gonna get a big reliever payday in the future…
Indeed things getting too close for comfort with colossal payroll Mets. It just takes 1 of the Reds/Giants to make up a mere 2 games.
Fox has Baseball Night in America tonight and features the Mets trying to avoid a sweep in Philadelphia — the Phillies’ magic number this morning is down to 7.
That would be so Mets if they sign Soto but miss the playoffs because of the reds
sad tormented: If they miss the postseason, it will be because of themselves, not the Reds or any other team.
Dodgers still have 7 games with the Giants. They can affect who they play in the Wild Card round. (assuming the Phillies don’t collapse too).
As a long time Mets fan no surprise to me.
Mickey Mouse Callaway no managerial experience 2 wasted years
Rojas Yankees Bench coach no experience 2 wasted years
Mendoza Yankees Bench coach no experience 2 more wasted years.
Mendoza is completely lost right now just as the Mets are as I sadly predicted on earlier threads only to ridicule responses. But hey that’s cool because this is an opinion board and my opinion is no more valid than anyone else’s.
Can we please hire a real manager next year as this year is done; even if we limp in, we will get tossed out early,
Derek Shelton is waiting by the phone.
Canosucks: Mendoza didn’t do badly last year.
Blue,
I just read an article that I agree with; how Mendoza always looks to tomorrow and tries to squeeze an extra inning out of a starter having a bad day and then follows up with a bad reliever as not to waste a game in my mind he has already thrown away. Poor lineup choices and substitutions.
Leading to the horrible stat that the Mets are 0-65 when trailing after the eighth inning in 2025.
As for last year I said it at the time, the Mets players came through in a “heroic” way to overcome a lot of his managerial mistakes; this year they are not.
Thanks Blue you are spot on to read; TR
The Mets did well last year down the stretch, but I’d argue it had very little to do with Mendoza and more to do with the chemistry of the team and leaders he had in the dugout. The guy is making poor decisions on a nightly basis, never two steps ahead, never two guys up on the pen at the same time, just in case, repeats his mistakes, can’t manage a bullpen for the life of him, poor lineup decisions, goes with bad matchups… and most importantly, he can’t fire up his team when they absolutely need it, now.
It’s not mendoza’s fault this year they’ve had core guys disappear/regress this year (hello, nimmo and vientos?) and injury issues with pitching
Mets fans should take solace knowing that the Padres are tanking.
@DanFan
Would be quite funny if the Giants & Reds make it into the playoffs.
Even the Cards has still a far chance
Mets aren’t doing what they *need* to do and *should be doing* to keep Juan happy. That’s why his numbers are down, that’s why he’s unhappy, that’s why the team is struggling.
Take care of the man, treat him right.
His numbers are down? A 30/30 season and just the third player ever with 35+ homers, 30 steals and 115 walks…ok
Yes they are down, yes he is unhappy, yes he is being mistreated by the organization.
What about how many players in history have had 43+ HR, 23 SB, and 92+ walks?
What about how many players have had 51+ HR, 19 SB, and 98 walks?
Yards: How do you know he’s unhappy? You’ve heard this from him?
What’s your solution? More free box suites? Private plane rides? Evian shower water? Support your claims.
I dont follow the Mets. From afar, it seems like Soto is having a very Soto-like season. What are the Mets doing, or failing to do, that’s holding him back?
He’s a troll.
Reminder to MLBTR users:
“Yards of Camden” (recently (“Backinthebleachers” and “Boycottsidneysweeney” is an infamous known troll who keeps changing his name and profile to evade bans and mutes. His previous usernames are TheOpener, The Voices, Evan Stanleyson, TrojanToss, oi0ewt98er, TheFormerPlayer, Fan of the Umpires, VoiceofREASON, soulefh, Owensboro, 88 Brooklyn Dodgers, BinHenders, California 8, Alvo Sumatro, tikiagedola, Masculinetimwaltz, and rachelmaddowishot.
I know this because he uses the same schticks. Lately he’s been using controversial and irrelevant political references while also making the occasional “trade top 4 prospects” and the “10 teams are better than this team” thing going, hoping to start long-winding reply chains.
Some of you may be familiar with him, as a reminder, his past schticks are:
– “The next time they’re referred to as the “Trashtros” there’s going to be a problem.”
– “underrated city/team in all of sports, you can ask anybody”
– “Rome, Starke, Verducci, etc.”
– “Saw (injury) before seeing the rest of the headline and immediately figured it was about Mike Trout. Fragile guy.”
– “Outside chance at the hall of fame, (exaggerated percent) chance”
– “The joke is on the “A’s” if they leave Oakland like the pathetic cowards that they are.”
– If Joe Mauer got into the Hall of Fame which is laughable then it will be an outrage if they really do actually end up rejecting (player)”
– “Not 1 single other player from (veteran)’s rookie season is still playing for the (subject team). Almost unbelievable.”
– “Sign Trevor Bauer. Trevor is Waiting.”
– “Votto should be brought back for a 1 or 2 year retirement tour”
– “Did Toronto really sign a bad bodied first baseman to 500+ million?”
– His new schtick: Outlandish extension offers.
At this point, just mute him, report him or ignore him, because this type of trolling is the worst, it has compelled me to call him out like this
Tim, please for goodness sake’s IP this God-awful troll.
Not an air guy, but I’m aware IP can be modified fairly easily. Tracking the user’s would MAC address (tied to the device itself) to block would be more effective but more difficult (maybe?).
Not an IT* guy
My man Steiny bringing all the receipts, love it! Haha 🤙🏽😎🤙🏽
“Votto should be brought back for a one or two year retirement tour”… That one’s actually kind of funny, though.
Mets collapsing in sept
BIG surprise
@chandlerbing
Correct, it’s not really newsworthy as it is expected. It’s like reporting that the leaves are changing colors and falling.
Mets are collapsing and water is wet
Funny thing is that there will be articles about that
@Oppo nacho
I apologize for my mistake. Yes, you are correct, that will still happen to…
Unfortunately, with 3 wildcards, a collapse is meaningless. Mets can back in and win the WS with a .500 record.
Detmers’ elbow felt dead? I’m no doctor but that does not sound good.
According to Aaron Boone “he’s in a good place”…
“Rub some dirt on it, Reid. You’re fine.”
Would be nice to think that Detmers will come round like Adell, but he’s become ancient history and not necessarily good history. My suggestion is to let him go if it truly is serious. If not, see if he makes it through spring training. If not DFA him.
If the Mets manage to back into the playoffs, there will be a lesson to learn for other teams: The games in April and May really do matter.
It’s almost unfathomable to think the Mets could be a playoff team. I’ve been watching them all season and aside from a few short runs of brilliance, they’ve been unwatchable since mid-June. I keep waiting for them to go on a hot streak similar to what we saw in April-May, with that lineup and the rookie pitchers who have been pretty impressive so far, but I think it is what it is at this point. You can’t win with 4-5 inning starting pitchers and multiple unusable relievers (Stanek, Helsley). But if their competition is the Reds and Giants, I think .500 ball from here on out will get the Mets into the playoffs (where, who knows, anything can happen).
Mets lineup is far better than any of those teams behind them, problem is cannot sustain their position much longer with 5-innings outings and a limited bullpen.
Been watching the Mets for 60 years and this is the worst pitching staff I have ever seen from them. With a $ 350 MM payroll this is the worst team $ can buy. Poor roster construction, poor coaching, a manager who can’t in game manage or manage the poor roster he has been provided.
The Team’s trade deadline deals made them worse and gifted the Giants some good young players that are helping them.
Where is Dicky Lovelady when they need him? LMAO
Spot on Robrock30; with you and the 60 years
At least we got ours and were blessed to watch the ’69 and ’86 WS Championship Teams and know the difference between quality rosters and winning teams and what has been provided over the past 40 years.
I learned the fundamentals in Little League and from watching MLB in my youth to differentiate the Game from what it has become currently. It is really sad.
That sweep you pulled off in SF is looming so large. Gave you the tiebreaker and cemented the Giants selling position. It’s crazy how important some mid year series turn out to be.
Reds doing their best on the out-payrolled tour. You have to give those kids credit for hanging in there despite the lack of help from the front office when they needed it.
we need to do a better job in the comments
You need to do a better job at finding a new schtick
Censorship alive and well!
Of course it is, and properly applied to limiting subjects discussed and not opinions expressed. MLBTR is a privately owned site whose owners want to limit content to baseball. There are plenty of internet sites where message boards are a free-for-all. MLBTR just is not one of them.
You’re absolutely right, Dunsel, as long as it’s governed evenly across all opinions, which it has not been in the past. Cheers!
Fair enough on the place, but maybe so many people choosing to ignore the situation is a massive part of the problem. It might hurt to think about, but it isn’t just going away by itself anytime soon.
@foppert3 Nobody is ignoring anything. That’s what other social platforms are for. Most of us here choose to not have such discussions on MLBTR. I may go off-topic sometimes but my preference is to stick to apolitical baseball discussions and many others do so too.
Ok. As long as the smart people (ie the moderates) are onto it. Not sitting back and letting the dumb people (ie the extremists) sort it out. It has to stop. It impacts the world.
For some perspective, a 24yo Australian girl reached out to her old man yesterday. Told me what happened. All conflicted about it. Obviously not keen on the message he was sending about a modern woman’s place in the world, but also aware he had a wife and kids. She wanted to talk about it. I just hope you people are as well.
What situation are people ignoring? Tough to follow the conversation if some comments are getting pulled.
I assume it’s Kirk.
One can argue the merits and problems of extreme viewpoints without insulting the intelligence of those with whom one disagrees. Avoiding insults and ad hominem arguments is the first step towards civil discourse.
Ha ha. Nice attempt at sounding intelligent.
Extreme views are dumb. Either direction. They ignore counter information. Ignoring information is dumb. No way around it. If dumb offends you, let’s go with not smart. Hopefully that makes you feel better.
Far better to challenge those with extreme viewpoints than to just insult them. I suspect that quite a few have not given their positions real analytic thought. Try asking them to explain their viewpoint, listen respectfully, and then explain yours. Some won’t engage in intelligent discussion, but some will. Then shake hands. You might be surprised at the results.
Dumb is dumb. If you are getting offended by that, your degree of precious might also need to be looked at.
I’m Australian. We are real good with differing viewpoints. Don’t worry about that. It’s why we happily fluctuate between centre left and centre right. What we also do is shoot down the extremists well before they get an opportunity for any real power. Our last election was prime “fark off with your extremism”. Look it up. We know there dumb is dangerous. Seems to work well. In short, you are preaching to the converted.
In what regard?
I’m happy to see that MLBTR lopped off the initial inappropriate comments regarding recent events, so that we can get back to discussing the Mets circling the drain.
@BHJ – I am happy to have missed out on the stuff that was removed (I can only imagine the idiocy), but will always be quite enamored with Mets circling the drain discussions.
Let’s see, next 10 games, angels go 9-1.
Astros go 1-9
Angels like to come from behind.
Force a tie
Remember the titans
Remember the Mariners.
Detmers is finally just taking it one pitch at a time and attacking hitters. I’d love to try to see if he can do that as a starter.
Did you hear HHJJ;
He has elbow pain and a dead arm; Angels are my second team as it doesn’t conflict, and I am a few miles away from the Big A.
I was Bummed to hear and text my other Angel Honks
The Mets are done. They won’t make the playoffs and I hope they don’t so they can fire Mendoza, Hefner and Stearns. They won’t actually fire Stearns but they should. Every move he’s made has been a failure. They have no leadership, every pitcher is ineffective and can’t throw strikes.
