The Tigers announced this morning that they’ve designated right-hander Charlie Morton for assignment. Right-hander Tanner Rainey had his contract selected to replace Morton on the 40-man and active rosters.
This surely isn’t the ending that either Morton or the Tigers were hoping for when Detroit acquired from the Orioles on the day of the trade deadline. Even then, however, Morton was in the midst of an up-and-down season. His first five starts with Baltimore saw him get torched to a 10.89 ERA as he walked 13.9% of his opponents. That led him to be demoted to the bullpen before the end of April, and he spent roughly a month in a multi-inning relief role before injuries in the rotation created an opening for the righty to start again.
Once Morton was returned to the rotation on May 26, the rest of his time in Baltimore saw him pitch to the mid-to-back of the rotation results the Orioles were hoping for when they acquired him with a 3.88 ERA and 4.17 FIP across 11 starts and 60 1/3 innings of work. In that time, he struck out 22.7% of his opponents and walked 8.9%. Those numbers were serviceable enough that the Tigers decided to bet on Morton’s recent performance and history of mid-rotation success, including his 3.87 ERA in four years with Atlanta.
It’s a bet that did not pay off. While Morton threw six innings of one-run ball during his first start as a Tiger and pitched to a perfectly solid 3.63 ERA with a 3.77 FIP across his first four outings (despite a clunker against the Angels in his first start at Comerica Park), the wheels came off with a five-run outing against the Athletics in West Sacramento at the end of August. Things only got worse in September, as he pitched to a 12.75 ERA across four starts with more walks (13) than strikeouts (11) while averaging just three innings per start. Morton’s struggles reached a crescendo on Friday, when he surrendered six runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two in 1 1/3 innings of work against his former teammates with the Braves.
The Tigers will now put Morton through waivers. It’s likely at this late stage in the calendar that he will go unclaimed, and if that comes to pass Morton has more than enough service time to reject an outright assignment and head into free agency early. All told, the veteran will walk away from the 2025 season with a 5.89 ERA and 4.98 FIP across 140 2/3 innings of work. That includes a 7.09 ERA and 5.20 FIP in his nine starts in a Tigers uniform. That tough performance makes Detroit’s decision to cut ties with Morton somewhat unsurprising, and even after Friday’s game Morton and manager A.J. Hinch both told reporters (including Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press) they didn’t know if Morton would pitch again for Detroit.
Perhaps if the Tigers were in a more stable position in the playoff picture then it would be easier for them to give Morton another opportunity to get right. The Guardians’ recent surge toward the top of the standings has put a lot of pressure on Detroit ahead of the final week of the season, however. Cleveland currently sits just one game back of the Tigers in the AL Central after winning ten games in a row while the Tigers have lost five straight. Detroit’s playoff odds according to Fangraphs are down to just 85.1% entering play today after sitting at approximately 100% as recently as September 6. That increased pressure is forcing more aggressive moves than other teams that have already clinched a playoff spot are making at this point in the calendar.
As for Rainey, the right-hander pitched for the Pirates earlier this year but struggled to a 10.57 ERA in 11 appearances before being designated for assignment. He eventually caught on with the Tigers on a minor league deal and has posted a 2.66 ERA in 19 appearances for Triple-A Toledo. That success in the minors isn’t likely to outweigh his career 5.44 ERA in 209 big league appearances, but perhaps Rainey will look good enough in a couple of appearances in the majors that it could help him either hold onto a 40-man roster spot with Detroit this offseason or find a contract elsewhere.

But his postseason track record is stellar.
Most of that was compiled five years and more ago. Safe to say that he isn’t the same pitcher anymore now at 41.
I know, I’m just regurgitating the line MLBTR keeps spewing forth about him every time I see his name here lately, it seems. In a way to say something positive I suppose, out of respect for his longevity in the game since he appears to be as cooked as a glazed or braised Sunday ham.
Bet if he made a start against the Mets he’d throw 8 shutout innings.
He’d throw a no-hitter against the Tigers. The Indians should give him a flyer.
The Indians can kick rocks. Detroit is going to survive just fine. Better to get a losing streak out in the regular season and not the playoffs. Detroit will rebound and win the division, and whoever the Indians will play if they get in will sweep them. Their former all-star closer is a game fixing cheat who won’t be there for them, and other than Ramirez and Kwan, I can’t name another hitter for them, let alone another pitcher. Tigers have all-stars and quality starters at every offensive position, the Cy Young winner at #1, a solid #2 with Mize, and Flaherty is a solid #2 when he is on. Tigers will be just fine in October, and if Illich actually pumps money into the team during the offseason, the Tigers will have a nice dynasty opportunity going while Cleveland will be first round postseason exits the few times in the next decade they actually make the playoffs.
Problem is if they don’t get their head out of their butt they won’t even see the post season! This has to be one of the worst collapses ever in Major League history, this team has imploded! If they miss the playoffs Harris should be fired immediately, they knew they were having issues at the break, yet he continued with his dumpster diving model to try and fix the situation. It reminds me of the Dumbrowski years when we had the lineup to win but never had the bullpen!
I agree that Harris should get the axe, but I wish I knew how much fault should be placed on ownership. They could’ve threw a bone at Ohtani, or perhaps Alonso and tried to trade Torkelson for pitching. I was nervous about Flaherty, Cobb, and Torres being the only big name guys being signed. I felt like the staff needed someone better than Flaherty. Fortunately for me, Flaherty was an average pitcher, and Torres was amazing. Cobb did about as much as I thought he would. I just feel like Illich should’ve let the cash flow and that this is the best chance they will have. I guess we will see if Illich was lying about saying 2025 wasn’t their best shot if he spends money in the offseason. I’m still hoping this team wakes up and gets a hot streak during the playoffs and gets that elusive title. If Harris was sitting on his hands and Illich was trying to up the profit, they can give their rings to a deserving Tiger fan.
I think Harris was under the impression that Detroit is now set-up long term for contention, and so didn’t want to rock the boat too much at the deadline by going hardcore. Well that is looking like it could be a fatal mistake. Paddack and Morton were absolute bottom of the barrell scrubs, one level up from Quad-A at best and appears were only acquired because somebody had to pitch a bevy of major league innings during the second half. You can’t let this season be like Baltimore’s 2024; after a quick playoff exit you go into 2026 and tank it. You gotta go for the brass ring when the opportunity is basically handed to you. Nothing is guaranteed next year, for we all could be dead.
So not so long ago people had changed their tune about Harris because they were winning way more games than expected and looked great. Then they go through a dry spell and he should be fired???? Should they fire Hinch too?
Im not happy that things are going south right now but no one deserves to get fired dude.
Harris and Ilitch need a wake up call. Any casual fan could see the flaws on this team. Lack of pitching depth and the need for a couple more veteran bats. Harris clutching his prospects instead of acquiring proven MLB players will be the fall of this team. The owner is cheap and the front office thinks they’re smarter than everyone else.
Hmm. Rainey has a 10+ era.
And a career 6.0 walk rate. But Fetter still has a few days to fix him.
Rainey has always had commend issues but he’s really struggled post-TJS the last few seasons. Any possible upside he might have is still probably more than Morton could offer.
Putting him in a MLB roster during a pennant race is insane. He was awful in Pittsburgh.
You must not be familiar with our pen.
If there’s options worse than him, I am shocked they made it this far.
It’s sad to think that Charlie’s potentially last game in the majors was a 6-run clunker loss to the Braves. He’s had a great career.
Morton 7.08 era while with the Tigers, Paddock 6.12 ERA. Best record in baseball until these 2 arrived. 🙁
The Tigers definitely had the worst deadline of any potential playoff team, they cheaped out big time.
Pinstripes…they did not. They got Finnegan and Montero for a weak pen and they have rocked. They gave up little to do that. Sewald is TBD, but the two starters they got did not work out for sure. The bullpen was their biggest weakness at the time and they addressed it.
Best guess is that Morton reflects upon the season and decides that this is it for him. He has been on the one year deal mode for awhile – terrific guy and a really nice career as a late bloomer.
Makes some sense. At best, he’d have one start left in the regular season. Most likely the team will go with Skubal, Flaherty, Mize and pitching chaos the rest of the way IF they do make the playoffs. Morton really doesn’t fit that plan in general and based on how he has pitched as of late..
Who has two thumbs and thinks they see the next Braves pickup!?… This guy right here folks.
Orioles should bring him back for the final two weeks
Honestly….Tigers should have put Charlie in the Bullpen….he was okay in the Orioles bullpen for a bit
He was just so inconsistent all year long
Yankees should sign him to insert between Field and Rondon for the march to World Series victory!!!
Who are Field and Rondon???
Johnny and Bruce
Huh?
‘bout time. And Yankees fans are delusional, among other things.
We are getting a 40-man playoff waiver for Charlie to get in the playoff roster due to Hal’s friendship with the Donald.
The Yankees will be a tough out in the playoffs.
But Tigers announcer told us how exciting it was they had Morton because their great manager loved him and they would be great together. Was this a lie?
Yikes getting DFA for Rainey? That’s not a good way to go out
Bring back Brennan Hanifee IF the Tigers somehow make it to the playoffs.
Nice man, very fan friendly and a calm demeanor. It sounds as if it might be time to hang up the cleats. Thanks for your time in Tampa Bay.
You pray for rain, this is what you get…….
His goose is cooked.
Back to the braves real quick lol.
You should play the lottery!
Postseason odds were 100 percent then went down to 85 percent………we need to stop with these playoff odds lol
Postseason odds are still 100%… MLB doesnt want that mess in Cleveland making the playoffs. Maybe the Tigers won’t be the #2 seed anymore, but theyll start winning once they hit the road next week; and Cleveland is due to lose a few games
Thats great and all but if Cleveland keeps winning and Detroit keeps losing then the MLB will get the guards whether they like it or not.
Or, they find some more gamblers in Cleveland…
/satire
I guess his off-season vacation is starting a week early.
Officially. He started his vacation 7 weeks ago.
This trade was stupid from the get-go; the Tigers gave up a good reliever prospect for a troubled starter. It went even worse afterwards. Hopefully Harris has to explain why he opted for the expensive and disastrous Morton/Enns-swap.
Gruß,
BSHH
RP prospects are a dime a dozen. And Enns sucked. Morton had a good bit of bad luck too 5.20 FIP with Detroit. Not that is good btw.
I think Enns was a separate deal, not traded for Morton.
Charlie was and still is a warrior however it’s time to hang up those cleats and enjoy fly fishing or something of that nature. Good luck to you buddy..
blah blah blah I’m not seeing any mention here at all about his once-in-a-century 200 career HBP!!! 😤😤😤
Harris has had three drafts that help comprise the Tigers’ highly-touted farm system.
Question: Shouldn’t it have produced a couple of college relievers by now?
He drafts lots of high school pitchers and he drafted Melton did he not who has looked great.
Melton; Draft: 2022, Detroit Tigers, Round: 4, Overall Pick: 117
Harris was hired 2 months after ’22 draft.
Love Melton. He might rate right behind Skubal & Finnegan on my current trusted pitcher list. That’s about where the list ends, too.
I was just kind of wondering why we don’t seem to develop many relievers. We’re always going through other people’s garbage.
My bad. Questioned it as I typed it. Cheers dude.
You acquire a starter with a 5 ERA and you get what you deserve.
Watching Tork whiffing at balls below the strike zone after letting fastballs right down the middle go by without a swing is uber-maddening.
Another cheating Astro pitcher who sucks when there is no trash can to help. If his career is over, good riddance.
Full panic mode
Seems Morton may have reached the end of the line. Great late career resurgence but the past couple of seasons have been ugly
Karma from last year.
If there was any doubt there are Baseball Gods, this freefall proves their existence. The Tigers defied the Gods from Aug. ’24 until the ’25 All Star break, and are now paying the price.
Over course, some may argue it’s not Baseball Gods affecting today’s latest ugly display of “offense,” but useless players like Trey Sweeney popping out on the first pitch with 2 outs and 2 in scoring position in the bottom of the 8th.
Blame Hinch for pinch-hitting Sweeney for Ibanez. Sweeney was coming off the bench cold, and isn’t any good even when he’s been in the game. Then Hinch put in Rainey and blew the game wide open.
I think AJ read too many of his clippings last year. His moves this year haven’t been nearly as magical.
The Tigers actually had a little momentum there after McKinstry’s bloop, but Sweeney blew it with one crappy (as usual) swing. He’s someone that needs to be replaced. He provides nothing.
Terrible trade for a washed up, over the hill starter.
Paddock has not been good either.
The back end of the Tigers rotation has been a black hole all year.
They could have signed Verlander for 15M before he signed with the Giants.
Verlander could have provided veteran leadership and stabilized the back of the Tigers rotation.
He has found his form in August-Sept.
Justin Verlander Stats
SF · 2025 season
3 – 10
Record 3.75 ERA 127 SO 1.34 WHIP
Verlander’s wins and losses would be higher on the Tigers who were hitting very well until the current slump.
Verlander could have produced 5-10 wins for the Tigers enough
to clinch the Division over the Guardians and line up for
the playoffs as the #3.
Seriously, why he would pay $15 million to Cobb but not JV?
Harris is the smartest man in the room. How dare you question him!
You are assuming Verlander wanted to come back. Have you seen a quote from him saying he did? I haven’t. At the trade deadline he looked bad and has kicked butt since then. Morton was on a good run with Baltimore right before the trade deadline. Not every move works out.
He specifically said that it would be fun to end his career in Detroit and to never say never 2 years ago. Can you show me where he said he didn’t want to go back to Detroit?
He might want to come back to Detroit, but does Detroit really need him? Do we need a three and 10 pitcher?
You are reading between the lines BadMojo.
Justin Verlander is 24 innings where he’s pitched good this year. He’s three and 10. Tell me again how he would be any value to the Tigers and at the trade deadline. Verlander was doing nothing worth trading for or signing him or anything. I like Justin Verlander, but he’s not the Justin Verlander of 2010 and you’re complaining about Charlie Morton let’s face it Charlie Morton’s been talking retirement the last four years he should’ve retired four years ago but let’s not act like if we just got Justin Verlander we’d be in the playoffs.
You missed the salient points. Verlander would have won many more than 3 games for Detroit.
Giants did not give JV adequate run support this year.
Verlander has a better Era than: Martin,Paddock, Flaherty and a few others.
Yes hindsight is 20-20.
This is like those old back yard wiffle ball games we played as kids for the Tigers. If they sweep Cleveland at Cleveland next week, they are in. Its wild that its come to this. It’ll be back to the drawing board next season, and this winter we’ll be looking to the farm system for the next great players to come up. Obviously its not looking good, and I doubt anyone would bet they can do it, but we can all hope. GO TIGERS !!!
He’s only a batter away from being just the sixth man too hit 200.
Things get so bad for some teams that in the final week a starter leaking oil is better than a starter leaking even more oil.
Why didn’t the Tigers let Fetter help him?
Maybe the Dbacks can get him for a few games and use him in the bullpen.
What is even worse you gave up Ashman for him and he could become a really good pitcher for a long time. Don’t trade young kids for these over the hill rental veterans.
Riley Greene needs to wake the F up this week. He & someone need to outhit & outfield Jose Ramirez and Stephen Kwan. If they can’t do that, they don’t deserve to win. It’s time for the Tigers to stop playing with their heads up their fkn @$$e$!
Earnings around 160 million
Time to retire and do some good for the world
