Kazuma Okamoto Travels To U.S. For In-Person Meetings With Teams

By Steve Adams | December 29, 2025 at 11:55pm CDT

Star Nippon Professional Baseball third baseman Kazuma Okamoto has traveled to the United States for a series of in-person meetings as he enters the final stretch of his 45-day posting window, per a report from Yahoo Japan (hat tip to Yakyu Cosmopolitan). Okamoto and agent Scott Boras are narrowing the field of interested clubs as Okamoto nears his early-January deadline for an agreement.

To this point, each of the Blue Jays, Pirates, Red Sox, Padres and Angels have been prominently linked to Okamoto, who’ll turn 30 next June. The longtime Yomiuri Giants star, who’d been their team captain prior to being posted, is one of the most consistent sluggers in Japan. He’s a career .277/.361/.522 hitter in NPB who has reached 30 home runs in all but two of his 11 seasons. That includes 2025, when injuries limited him to 69 games, and 2024, when he “only” hit 27 homers in 143 games.

However, despite hitting a career-low 15 home runs this past season due to an elbow injury, Okamoto had the best production of his excellent NPB tenure on a rate basis. In 293 trips to the batter’s box, he slashed .327/.416/.598 with a robust 11.3% walk rate that matched his minuscule 11.3% strikeout rate. His 24.3% line-drive rate from this past season was a career-high, and Okamoto’s .271 ISO (slugging percentage minus batting average) was the second-best mark of his career, trailing only his 41-homer season from 2023.

Like countryman Munetaka Murakami, Okamoto is a corner infielder whose glovework concerns big league teams. He’s considered a better defender at third base than Murakami but is still viewed by many clubs as a player who’ll likely spend most (if not all) of his first MLB contract as a first baseman and/or designated hitter. Those defensive concerns contributed significantly to Murakami settling for a two-year deal that fell well short of industry expectations. Defensive concerns surrounding Okamoto aren’t as prominent, nor does he have the alarming swing-and-miss profile that also contributed to the bearish market for Murakami. However, Okamoto is four years older. Next year being his age-30 season will likely limit the length of his forthcoming contract (though perhaps not to the same extent as Murakami).

Of the teams connected to Okamoto thus far, there’s no clear favorite. The Blue Jays presumably still have Bo Bichette ahead of him on their wishlist — possibly Alex Bregman as well. Boston has also been pursuing both Bregman and Bichette (likely in that order). The Pirates have already acquired one first base option, signing Ryan O’Hearn, and have another in Spencer Horwitz. If they were to make a real push for Okamoto, they’d need to be confident in his ability to play third base. The Angels have a clearer path to playing time at the infield corners (particularly third base). The Padres won’t be displacing Manny Machado at third base, so Okamoto would need to play first base, with Jake Cronenworth manning second base and KBO acquisition Sung Mun Song shifting to the outfield or a utility role.

Of course, it remains perfectly plausible that other, yet-unidentified clubs are in the bidding. The A’s, Mariners, Twins, Rangers, D-backs, Marlins, Mets, Cubs and Nationals all have varying levels of questions at the infield corners. Not all of those teams have significant money to spend this winter — the Rangers, Twins and D-backs are all known to be reducing payroll relative to recent seasons — but any of the bunch could get creative with backloaded contract structures and/or shed payroll by another means to make room if Okamoto is deemed a sufficient upgrade. That’s a largely speculative list, to be clear, but given Okamoto’s track record in NPB, it’d be a surprise if “only” five MLB’s 30 teams had any interest in signing him.

It bears noting that while Okamoto was originally set to be posted on Nov. 19, MLBTR has confirmed that his posting didn’t become official until Nov. 21. That pushes his window to sign a contract with a big league club from the original Jan. 2 to Jan. 4. Whichever club signs him will owe the Giants a posting/release fee equal to 20% of the contract’s first $25MM, 17.5% of the next $25MM and 15% of any dollars thereafter. That fee comes on top of the value of the contract itself. Subsequent earnings (club/player options, performance incentives, award bonuses, etc.) fall under that umbrella as well, once they’re officially reached.

He hasn’t even been to the U.S. and his posting window ends in a few hours (metaphorically, not literally). He procrastinates like a lot of us do. I think that is beautiful.

I bet he and his agent did a lot of the legwork as far as researching which teams can fit him in best and feeling out which ones are seriously interested already. Him coming stateside now likely just means he’s narrowed his choices down to a handful of suitors. No sense in wasting time/energy/money traveling to all 30 teams in a month when realistically maybe only 5 of them are likely going to enter the bid.

Imai has to sign by Friday. Perhaps the best offers are lower 9 figures guaranteed since addition of Japan club tax instead of 150mil+. Boras may have to talk client into a shorter term with opt-out acceptance if the market says “prove it” to get close to what he was able to get Cease.

Wow-Boras might not be the ideal agent with a firm deadline. Good bidders/businesspeople don’t want their offers relentlessly shopped around by him and put through media sycophants with much time to spare. NYE or day might be logical approach of those genuinely interested.

CWS – Boras is Yoshida’s agent and the Sox paid over the moon for him.

This isn’t his first rodeo. I have faith that Boras gets the right deal for his client.

Love him or hate him, he gets his clients good money.

Not the best comp since Yoshida hasn’t worked out well. My point is that of a businessperson and leverage of using deadline against his games/leaks. A club may be happy (yet not desperate)for example to go as high as 5/110mil (plus fees to Japan)-but won’t do it several days ahead of time. Clubs can play the same negotiating games based on experience.

long – I think the general slowness of the free agent market could be something the union points to, especially with this being the last full offseason before the CBA expires.

6 out of the Top 7 non-posted free agents are still unsigned, and the Top Two posted players got very little interest …. that’s highly unusual based on memory.

cws – Two years ago it was painfully obvious the Boras clients all agreed to hold out until January/February, under his direction. THAT is blatant player collusion, but of course owners aren’t gonna file a complaint about it.

          FYI

Just two seasons before the first CBA was signed, teammates Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale had held out together in spring training. The pair had demanded a joint three-year, $1 million contract, split down the middle to keep Dodgers ownership from pitting the two against each other in negotiations — and the duo also told Los Angeles to speak with their agents, which was not the norm at the time.

Players than agreed to language against collusion of owners would also agree.

I would hazard to guess that there is some owner collusion and some player collusion. But I doubt that many players are refusing to take early offers to their liking. Probably several teams have a preferred choice and are keeping their options open by waiting on their second and third choices. Plenty of time left to be ready for Spring!

Call it wishful thinking, but here’s my dream scenario: the Yankees are working behind the scenes on Bellinger, Okamoto, and Imai – and this time they’ve laid down the law with Boras. No more games. No more using Yankee offers as leverage to drive up bids like they did with Soto. Shop it around, bring us your best number, and let’s get these deals done – or we walk.
And when Boras tries his usual song and dance? Hal looks him dead in the eye and reminds him whose son he is. Big George didn’t build this empire by getting played, and neither will his legacy. The Steinbrenner name still means something in the Bronx, and it’s time Scott remembers that.

@conspiracies…I don’t think I would. Suarez isn’t a game changer. We 100% know what the Pirates would get with Suarez. Okamoto could be more than that. He’s always been viewed as the “safer” option of the Japanese players that have been posted, so to me and hopefully some other Pirates fans, that is a Bryan Reynolds floor. A .285 hitter with a 25 homer ceiling. Maybe it’s just me, but I’d rather have a .285 hitter who hits 15-25 homeruns in the Pirates lineup, than someone who hits ,230 and 35-40 homeruns. And I only say that because the Pirates don’t have anyone to get on base. 5-10 more homeruns only equates to 10-15 more runs as the lineup is currently constructed. They just don’t have the guys to get on base. For a small ball lineup to work, you need a lineup full of small ball guys. For a big bopper lineup to work, you need guys to hit the ball out of the ball park. The Pirates don’t have that. The Pirates need guys who can extend the inning.

I agree, I think I would rather have Okamoto as it stands now. assuming things translate remotely close, Okamoto would be on base more striking out half as much while still having a 30+HR power potential. Other than the posting fee, probably much cheaper and younger and maybe able to get over 4 years of control.

That said if you have any concerns about it not remotely translating move to Suarez first as he is a known performer and you know what to expect.

Long run, if either one gets signed I would be thrilled.

How about we split the difference:you guys sign Imai and Suarez and we sign Okamato and Gallen or Mahle.

Then we figure out and get a good lefty OFer, or trade for one and we might just sniff the outside of the WC.

It’s not the best fit if we’re honest. He can’t play 1B there, and right handed power just dies at PNC. He’d have to play third and figure out a way to provide value without a lot of HR’s. That’s a tough one, and I think they can find a better way to spend $15m or whatever a year, plus the check to Japan.

You don’t fix an offense as bad as the Pirates were last year without taking some chances.

When the Pirates had a hole at 3B in 2015, they threw some money at Kang, and that worked out very well in the short term. Not so much once he got hurt and became an alcoholic, but 98 wins doesn’t happen without him.

Also, what are the better options?

I mean, sure, if we’re talking fantasy, I’ll take Bo Bichette to play SS until Griffin is ready and play Triolo at 3B.

But the day the Pirates outbid the field for a free agent that all the big market teams want is not quite here yet, and won’t happen under the current CBA. Anything the Pirates could offer, another team can afford to match, and no one’s going to choose Pittsburgh when they could play for a more consistently competitive team.

They have a shot at lower tier free agents and guys like Okamoto, where there’s risk involved in whether the guy will be a plus player.

Doubt Bregman would even consider it. But again, you can name a number of 3rd baseman available via a signing or trade who are more known products, that’s all
Here’s a franchise that continually cries poor that seemingly has been awakened by the comments of their generational pitcher. Good for Skenes. They’ve brought in two bats so far and still need another (or two). They already have question marks like Cruz who although he hits homers occasionally is generally a below average hitter. They have another in Reynolds, who dipped big time last season. Add to that an entire line up of question marks and your idea is to take a chance and add another who may or may not pan out for a price tag that for this owner is quite costly. Ok.
Your points are well taken and if the choice comes down to either him or Triolo at 3rd, yeah, why not? I just think there are proven options out there.

I guess I’m just not seeing those proven options out there. Suarez is the closest, but is 35 and is a poor defender. And I honestly expect him to get a Polanco sized commitment, which is probably more than the Bucs would spend.
A guy like Donovan would work, but depends on what they want. Not much left to deal at this point.
Bohm’s been mentioned, but he’s $10M plus the trade cost, for a one year rental of a non power guy.
All I’m hoping at this point is we don’t end up bringing IKF back and relying on “internal improvement” yet again. They’ve made a really good start, but need to finish the job.

Please note, I’m not disrespecting Okamoto
I’m glad the Pirates are “in” on him

I’m guessing the White Sox are done adding corner infielders this offseason after signing fellow Nippon star Munetaka Murakami. Right handed hitters Miguel Vargas and Lenyn Sosa figure to play more 3B, DH and perhaps be the short side platoon partner with lefty hitting Murakami at 1B.

The White Sox have great organizational depth with middle infielders and will probably need to eventually shuffle one of their shortstops like Colson Montgomery over to the hot corner where his power bat would profile nicely. This could especially become a priority if they select generational SS Roch Cholowsky as expected with the first pick in next summers Draft. Cholowsky will be on a fast track from UCLA to MLB and could see his White Sox debut as soon as 2027.

If the White Sox pull another Japanese FA “shocker” this winter I’m hoping it will be for 27-year old ace Tatsuya Imai who’s posting window closes this coming Friday.

The White Sox have to take Carson Boleman with the first pick. 6’4 210 lbs. lefty averaged over two strikeouts an inning as a prep, didn’t allow an earned run his junior season.

Bonemer, Antonacci, Carlson and I still think Javier Mogollon is a big time prospect on the infield.

Sox take Boleman and should look at adding some prospects at 1B/C/OF in the top of the draft.

Unless he has a catastrophic injury, Roch Cholowsky will be the #1 pick. He is the best college SS in 20 years. Out of high school he was expected to go in the 1st round and has gotten better in college. He has 4 plus tools, 60 grade or better. The only thing he doesn’t do exceptionally well is run. He has the footwork, the quickness, the instincts, and the arm to stick at SS long term. The only reason the White Sox would pass on him is to save money.

Not even the White Sox can be that inept, can they?

I just red this about his agent:

Recently, a report suggesting Bellinger’s mind-boggling demands created tension and drew strong criticism towards his agent, Scott Boras. During a recent episode of his podcast Nothing Personal, former MLB executive David Samson blasted Boras.

“You have to know that Boras is ridiculous. He’s unreasonable. He doesn’t make sense. He’s actually an industry joke,” said Samson, who was president of the Miami Marlins from 2002 until September 2017. “Scott Boras is out there somewhere asking for an insane amount of money and getting bailed out by older owners or newer owners, or anyone who somehow is subject to his spell.”

This guy could fill so many need the Yanks have expressed. A right handed hitting, high contact low strikeout player that can play both Corvette positions. At worst he could be a righty platoon to compliment McMahon at 3b and possibly Rice at 1b. When Stanton is inevitability injured he can get
more ABs as a 1b/DH/3B. It makes too much sense. If he shows he can handle both righties and lefties and high velocity then trade McMahon.

Because I think the Yanks would make a substantial offer and let out be clear that McMahon wouldn’t be an obstacle gym him getting 500 AB? Plus the opp to be the loan Japanese player in the largest media capital in the world wouldn’t hurt too? Ohtani on the West with him on the East? Baseball’s version of Godzilla vs King Kong?

Yankees won’t offer the highest contract for him to be a bench player. He wouldn’t accept anyway I would imagine. He probably wants the opportunity to play everyday.

He’s not gonna sign anywhere where he doesn’t have a near-guaranteed everyday slot. That’s why Murakami ended up where he ended up. The Japanese imports know they have to prove themselves quickly, and playing every few days isn’t gonna cut it.

Article doesn’t even mention the Tigers who clearly lack help on the left side. It shows me that even the writers, who normally come up with the craziest of rumors, KNOW that Mr. Harris never even entertains certain players joining the team. Keep sitting on your hands Scott…the fans in Detroit will support anything.

Laughable. I do follow the minor league teams all the time. Each year, I attend several games in Erie, Toledo and Grand Rapids. The Tigers don’t really have any great options for 3B in the system. And I don’t buy into the narrative that we would be blocking anyone. Teams can always move on from players under contract if better players are developed. With our payroll, bringing in a average 3B for a term of 3-4 years isn’t an issue. Scott just refuses to make a move. Offering Torres a QO was beyond comprehension for an org that has Perez; Colt; Hao Yu; McG and Max Anderson. None of the above seem to have the arm for SS or 3B. To make matters worse, they haven’t provided any path forward for Anderson or Lee, in particular. Meanwhile, other than Rainer, not much in the system for the left side. He needs to make a few decisions and make a few trades. Rodriguez; Briceno; Clark; McG and Rainer shouldn’t be dealt, but others need to be traded to get some depth at SP;3B and Ss at the minor league level.

He and Cohen are still angry about Boras and last year with Alonso and also getting burned by Sasaki and his agent.

I’m pretty sure the only information Heyman is getting this year is from Boras which is why we are hearing nothing.

And Puma’s source is in Texas.

Sasaki is not as big a deal though they were pissed that they gave him so much information and finding out later he wasn’t considering anyone but the Dodgers.

They are pissed about the Boras stuff with Alonso last year, among other things. Cohen especially.

Note Heyman isn’t getting anything about the Mets right. They are not talking to Boras so Heyman has nothing.

I think every team gave Sasaki something they thought would help. If they didn’t want to give him the info they didn’t have to. And I don’t think he was only going to sign with the Dodgers, although they were definitely one of the finalists.

All things being equal, they had two of his WBC teammates who could tell him what the team offered in terms of pitching tech and coaches, as well as their training staff.

He had valid concerns and it played out over the course of the season. Putting aside my being a Dodger fan, I think he chose correctly. The Dodgers had the pitching depth to send him down and shut him down while working on his velocity. I don’t know if the Mets, or any other team would have been in a position to do so. We might be hearing how he never panned out because they couldn’t afford to shut him down because of the pennant race.

Nope. He had decided he was going to the Dodgers…that’s what ticked teams off. He had already told someone he was not considering any other offers. It came out later.

It’s business, but Cohen felt Alonso didn’t share the same loyalty as Cohen did. That’s why you didn’t hear much from them regarding Alonso this year. They were completely out. All of the noise was planted by Heyman to get the Sox and Os to start bidding.

They have tightened up the FO so nothing is trickling out like last year, when Post (Puma and Heyman) had a few moles. That’s why Heyman lately has put up unfounded tidbits about interest in Framber, Bellinger, today Imai.

They treated Alonso like they didn’t want him when everyone, including Alonso, expected him to be a Met for life.

They gave him a 7 year offer to take him to age 36 at a very fair AAV. None deferred.

He told them he wanted to test the market.

Then last year, they offered him on a three year deal at that same AAV ($23m) coming off a poor season.

Instead he and Boras shopped it around knowing he had no market. Then got Cohen involved against he and Stearn’s better judgment. Shopped each incremental offer and dragged the feet while Stearns was stuck leaving a hole. Finally, Boras got the deal that had the AAV he wanted (30m) and a chance to opt out.

That doesn’t sound like someone who thought they’d be a Met for life. The said he was opting out RIGHT after an embarrassing exit from the season.

I love Pete, but he showed just as much “disloyalty” as people say Cohen has.

He didn’t snub them. They had no interest. Except they said the right things and didn’t badmouth him. Which in fairness neither has Pete.

Again in mention of Okamoto I wish Cleveland was added to the ranks. The concern over his defense leads me to believe he’d be the perfect fit for near full time use at 1B and to take over 3B for those 30 games (and probably growing as he ages) a season that Jose Ramirez is at DH. A RHH with solid contact skills and good power sign me up. The Murakami signing gives me hope that he isn’t completely out of their loop. Doubtful but nevertheless mildly hopeful, I really like this player.

The 3rd base options are all projects, and if Okamoto’s market has dropped, like it seems it has, it could be a very reasonable opportunity…though it probably doesn’t fit the A’s timeline, so, I’d assume it won’t happen.

I think someone Sox? Jays? will move on Okamoto instead of Bregman, saving themselves a LOT of money on a reasonable gamble that could pay off big.

Pittsburgh and Cleveland aren’t exactly a hotbed for Pacific Rim players but both offer exactly what this guy needs on the field for the next few years — to be surrounded by strong pitching and young cores of talent.

The Pirates are due for a winner and Okamoto provides exactly what they need to finish off their emerging core. In the same infield with Konnor Griffin, yowza!

Well, good luck. You had all glove there before with smallish Ke’Bryant Hayes so enduring a more plodding powerful presence (who at least delivered low error rates) making up for it in the batter’s box is a good trade-off in my book. It’d give your lineup real gravitas if he can produce anything remotely close to his Japanese stats.

Snowball is right? If injured perhaps. As Nutting’s fellow owner down the pike in Cleveland Paul Dolan shrugged it off and blithely put it when asked about an extension on Francisco Lindor, ‘Enjoy him’. You have four glorious years.

I hope you guys can get together with Griffin and make a Jackson Chourio type 8 year deal so he can dispense with any more silly minors play which he has clearly outclassed. If only we’d picked him!

Griffin is the player i thought he was going to be. Hopefully hes the next Bobby witt for us and they build around him at a premium position.

Some owners are cheap though. I think nuttings the worse when it comes to that and you cant blame management or cherrington for having to do with what they are given.

Hats off to cherrington though. Hes made some smart moves this off-season. I think he really changes the tone of the organization outright if they land okamoto so fingers crossed.

yes, I know he’s a free agent- so this is a sarcastic post- but I’m betting the Red Sox are looking for ways to trade prospects for him, as spending money this off season seems to not be on the agenda (so far).

It seems like the Sox are only going to make 1 big move- and if that involves trading for Marte (not saying it is or they should), they may not pony up for anyone and let Meyer play 3rd and let Bregman get his payday elsewhere.
