Star Nippon Professional Baseball third baseman Kazuma Okamoto has traveled to the United States for a series of in-person meetings as he enters the final stretch of his 45-day posting window, per a report from Yahoo Japan (hat tip to Yakyu Cosmopolitan). Okamoto and agent Scott Boras are narrowing the field of interested clubs as Okamoto nears his early-January deadline for an agreement.
To this point, each of the Blue Jays, Pirates, Red Sox, Padres and Angels have been prominently linked to Okamoto, who’ll turn 30 next June. The longtime Yomiuri Giants star, who’d been their team captain prior to being posted, is one of the most consistent sluggers in Japan. He’s a career .277/.361/.522 hitter in NPB who has reached 30 home runs in all but two of his 11 seasons. That includes 2025, when injuries limited him to 69 games, and 2024, when he “only” hit 27 homers in 143 games.
However, despite hitting a career-low 15 home runs this past season due to an elbow injury, Okamoto had the best production of his excellent NPB tenure on a rate basis. In 293 trips to the batter’s box, he slashed .327/.416/.598 with a robust 11.3% walk rate that matched his minuscule 11.3% strikeout rate. His 24.3% line-drive rate from this past season was a career-high, and Okamoto’s .271 ISO (slugging percentage minus batting average) was the second-best mark of his career, trailing only his 41-homer season from 2023.
Like countryman Munetaka Murakami, Okamoto is a corner infielder whose glovework concerns big league teams. He’s considered a better defender at third base than Murakami but is still viewed by many clubs as a player who’ll likely spend most (if not all) of his first MLB contract as a first baseman and/or designated hitter. Those defensive concerns contributed significantly to Murakami settling for a two-year deal that fell well short of industry expectations. Defensive concerns surrounding Okamoto aren’t as prominent, nor does he have the alarming swing-and-miss profile that also contributed to the bearish market for Murakami. However, Okamoto is four years older. Next year being his age-30 season will likely limit the length of his forthcoming contract (though perhaps not to the same extent as Murakami).
Of the teams connected to Okamoto thus far, there’s no clear favorite. The Blue Jays presumably still have Bo Bichette ahead of him on their wishlist — possibly Alex Bregman as well. Boston has also been pursuing both Bregman and Bichette (likely in that order). The Pirates have already acquired one first base option, signing Ryan O’Hearn, and have another in Spencer Horwitz. If they were to make a real push for Okamoto, they’d need to be confident in his ability to play third base. The Angels have a clearer path to playing time at the infield corners (particularly third base). The Padres won’t be displacing Manny Machado at third base, so Okamoto would need to play first base, with Jake Cronenworth manning second base and KBO acquisition Sung Mun Song shifting to the outfield or a utility role.
Of course, it remains perfectly plausible that other, yet-unidentified clubs are in the bidding. The A’s, Mariners, Twins, Rangers, D-backs, Marlins, Mets, Cubs and Nationals all have varying levels of questions at the infield corners. Not all of those teams have significant money to spend this winter — the Rangers, Twins and D-backs are all known to be reducing payroll relative to recent seasons — but any of the bunch could get creative with backloaded contract structures and/or shed payroll by another means to make room if Okamoto is deemed a sufficient upgrade. That’s a largely speculative list, to be clear, but given Okamoto’s track record in NPB, it’d be a surprise if “only” five MLB’s 30 teams had any interest in signing him.
It bears noting that while Okamoto was originally set to be posted on Nov. 19, MLBTR has confirmed that his posting didn’t become official until Nov. 21. That pushes his window to sign a contract with a big league club from the original Jan. 2 to Jan. 4. Whichever club signs him will owe the Giants a posting/release fee equal to 20% of the contract’s first $25MM, 17.5% of the next $25MM and 15% of any dollars thereafter. That fee comes on top of the value of the contract itself. Subsequent earnings (club/player options, performance incentives, award bonuses, etc.) fall under that umbrella as well, once they’re officially reached.

He hasn’t even been to the U.S. and his posting window ends in a few hours (metaphorically, not literally). He procrastinates like a lot of us do. I think that is beautiful.
Somehow I can’t believe that was due to procrastination.
Maybe he was busy drinking elderberries.
Maybe his mother smells of elderberries
There is Zoom.
He had to wait for Ohtani’s interpreter to get out of prison.
No. And that is honestly a terrible joke to get upvotes.
Not at all. He has been figuring out which teams are serious, narrowing that down to a few, and is now doing his “college tour.” Timing is just about right far as I can tell.
I bet he and his agent did a lot of the legwork as far as researching which teams can fit him in best and feeling out which ones are seriously interested already. Him coming stateside now likely just means he’s narrowed his choices down to a handful of suitors. No sense in wasting time/energy/money traveling to all 30 teams in a month when realistically maybe only 5 of them are likely going to enter the bid.
Where’s Imai at?
Seattle hopefully!
Imai has to sign by Friday. Perhaps the best offers are lower 9 figures guaranteed since addition of Japan club tax instead of 150mil+. Boras may have to talk client into a shorter term with opt-out acceptance if the market says “prove it” to get close to what he was able to get Cease.
Padres are now int the “prominently” connected group – haven’t seen them referenced in previous posts. Likely due to being “financially restricted” or something.

I stand corrected with apologies.
I’m rooting for the Pirates.
For the same money as ohearn but with a goofy Imanaga style option? If he opts out they can opt in for a longer higher AAv. Giving him an opportunity at 3B. Also keeps the posting fee down
I’d rather have the pirates sign saurez
@conspiracies…I don’t think I would. Suarez isn’t a game changer. We 100% know what the Pirates would get with Suarez. Okamoto could be more than that. He’s always been viewed as the “safer” option of the Japanese players that have been posted, so to me and hopefully some other Pirates fans, that is a Bryan Reynolds floor. A .285 hitter with a 25 homer ceiling. Maybe it’s just me, but I’d rather have a .285 hitter who hits 15-25 homeruns in the Pirates lineup, than someone who hits ,230 and 35-40 homeruns. And I only say that because the Pirates don’t have anyone to get on base. 5-10 more homeruns only equates to 10-15 more runs as the lineup is currently constructed. They just don’t have the guys to get on base. For a small ball lineup to work, you need a lineup full of small ball guys. For a big bopper lineup to work, you need guys to hit the ball out of the ball park. The Pirates don’t have that. The Pirates need guys who can extend the inning.
It’s not the best fit if we’re honest. He can’t play 1B there, and right handed power just dies at PNC. He’d have to play third and figure out a way to provide value without a lot of HR’s. That’s a tough one, and I think they can find a better way to spend $15m or whatever a year, plus the check to Japan.
I’m not. Some teams can afford to make mistakes financially or in a playing sense. The Pirates can’t in either regard. Too much of a question mark. There are better options
Cubs need another starting pitcher more. Padres even more so.
Blue Jays setting sights higher.
Pirates, Angels or Red Sox?
Would be cool if White Sox pulled a shocker.
I agree the Padres do need pitching, but they also need slug. The power numbers were dreadful last year.
If the Padres can move Cronenworth, I’d agree this would be a perfect move for them. But that’s a tall order.
I’m guessing the White Sox are done adding corner infielders this offseason after signing fellow Nippon star Munetaka Murakami. Right handed hitters Miguel Vargas and Lenyn Sosa figure to play more 3B, DH and perhaps be the short side platoon partner with lefty hitting Murakami at 1B.
The White Sox have great organizational depth with middle infielders and will probably need to eventually shuffle one of their shortstops like Colson Montgomery over to the hot corner where his power bat would profile nicely. This could especially become a priority if they select generational SS Roch Cholowsky as expected with the first pick in next summers Draft. Cholowsky will be on a fast track from UCLA to MLB and could see his White Sox debut as soon as 2027.
If the White Sox pull another Japanese FA “shocker” this winter I’m hoping it will be for 27-year old ace Tatsuya Imai who’s posting window closes this coming Friday.
I really liked him for the Red Sox before they added Contreras. If they were to sign him now, and it turns out he can’t play 3B well enough, he’d be a wasted bench player.
How many years did DEVERS play 3B? HOBSON before him? Don’t think Boston places too high a bar on defense at that position. Average will be an improvement from most years.
RedSox have not been “prominently” linked to him… “loosely” is the better description.
SD is a beautiful city
it definitely is! getting over run with homeless population, however. sadly
I didn’t realize Boras was his agent. I guess that rules out the Pirates!
Feel the same way about the Angels chances. Need him, as our 3rd base options aren’t great, but we’ll see..
That’s exactly what I thought when I saw that Boras is his agent. The ONLY way he comes to Pittsburgh is a decent overpay.
Hopefully this one breaks the next dam.
I’d love the Mets to meet with him bc they are still 1-2 bats short. Baty is decent and Polanco will split time at 1B/DH, so there are options.
He won’t sign somewhere he doesn’t have an obvious slot to play almost every day. And who knows how he feels about DH.
He would get the lion share of time at first.
Murakami unexpectedly signed with the white Sox for unexpected terms. Maybe okamoto does the same? Twins hopefully. They need some new blood in the lineup
Angels for sure.
Pirates or angels. Outside chance of dbacks
Imai was supposedly coming over to do the same thing this week. Now he’s ‘meeting teams via Zoom’, and is confused about why the interest in him is tepid.
I think I may have just just figured out one reason why.
I would think for any of these guys flying to the winter meetings to meet teams face-to-face would be a priority, but i guess not
I think it would have been 10-20 years ago. Nowadays the winter meetings are mostly a bunch of front office people sitting in a hotel suite text other front office people doing the same.
This is according to the reporters who still attend.
They should change the name to winter media meetings. Or maybe winter extravaganza. They probably only show up so they don’t get fined
So true. In the age of Zoom there really isn’t any reason for the Winter Meetings and I suspect if not for the MLB Channel’s need for content it wouldn’t happen anymore.
Face to face in person will always be the best in terms of actual communication. Zoom is great for logistical reasons.
I just red this about his agent:
Recently, a report suggesting Bellinger’s mind-boggling demands created tension and drew strong criticism towards his agent, Scott Boras. During a recent episode of his podcast Nothing Personal, former MLB executive David Samson blasted Boras.
“You have to know that Boras is ridiculous. He’s unreasonable. He doesn’t make sense. He’s actually an industry joke,” said Samson, who was president of the Miami Marlins from 2002 until September 2017. “Scott Boras is out there somewhere asking for an insane amount of money and getting bailed out by older owners or newer owners, or anyone who somehow is subject to his spell.”
His job is to get his players the best deals possible, and he’s very very good at it. Of course a team exec is gonna hate him!
David Samson referring to anyone else as an “industry joke” is … well, it’s something. Haha.
Refreshing to have you in the chat Steve
Guy who ran the least successful team only because his father in law bought the team calling objectively the best agent in sports a joke is incredible
Angels, pirates and padres have been the most recently linked clubs. The others have been mentioned to a certain degree.
With boras as his agent this will likely play out until the day before his time is up.
Can’t say I’ve seen one serious report where the Blue Jays were connected to Okamoto in more than a “possible fit” sort of way, so I’m a little surprised to see them as the first team mentioned here.
They are mentioned because they have interest in Bregman. So then the other possible candidates start to be mentioned.
On a slowboat?
Seems like he has his offers on the table and knows that he is going to say yes to 1 of them so, coming over to get the deal done after some face to face time / maybe trying to get a little more.
Dodgers will sign him for future 1B/3B, even if they trade for a utility player or sign Bichette or Bregman, just to mess with the league.
He’s 30. The “future” is now.
If you’re the Dodgers you just watch the process happen. They don’t need to sign players they have no interest in to mess with the league.
Pretty sure winning two consecutive world series and going for a third is messing with the rest of the teams plenty. No need to shoot yourself in the foot just to prove you can do it.
This guy could fill so many need the Yanks have expressed. A right handed hitting, high contact low strikeout player that can play both Corvette positions. At worst he could be a righty platoon to compliment McMahon at 3b and possibly Rice at 1b. When Stanton is inevitability injured he can get
more ABs as a 1b/DH/3B. It makes too much sense. If he shows he can handle both righties and lefties and high velocity then trade McMahon.
Why would he come to NYY to short side platoon, when others will play him full time?
He’s not gonna sign anywhere where he doesn’t have a near-guaranteed everyday slot. That’s why Murakami ended up where he ended up. The Japanese imports know they have to prove themselves quickly, and playing every few days isn’t gonna cut it.
The only trouble with pirates signing saurez would be that the orange gespacho would arrest him fielding a grounder at PNC PARK
Everyone does say that Navy Yard DC is the Bunkyo Tokyo of the US
Why am I not surprised his agent is Boras. I give him credit for getting his clients money but man will I be happy when his name is no longer associated with baseball.
It’s on like Donkey Kong! Every free agent should have a deadline!
Much luck, y’all!
“Of the teams connected to murakami so far there’s no clear favorite” I got a weird feeling the white Sox get in on him
You do realize Scott Boras is a cooperation not just an individual.
corporation.
True, but best believe he LOVES the cameras. He’ll get his screen-time. His private jet at SNA is always gassed up. If media was smart, they’d camp out at the airport to see who he flies in…
The yinzers will riot if he is spotted in the burgh.
Quick !
Track his plane, get the flight plan.
I was just looking through the MLBTR Top 50 and it’s crazy how many guys are still unisigned and it’s almost January.
Tells you a lot about the game…and unrealistic expectations.
Yeah, definitely feels that way, especially from the top guys.
Only if they are all different deadlines, and top FAs come first.
Article doesn’t even mention the Tigers who clearly lack help on the left side. It shows me that even the writers, who normally come up with the craziest of rumors, KNOW that Mr. Harris never even entertains certain players joining the team. Keep sitting on your hands Scott…the fans in Detroit will support anything.
C’mon Stearns, this is a perfect fit.
