Here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day today:
1. Mets turn the page on an era:
The departures of Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso during the Winter Meetings, in conjunction with last month’s trade of Brandon Nimmo, mean that three of the Mets’ longest-tenured players will all play elsewhere in 2026. President of baseball operations David Stearns was already facing plenty of pressure this winter to improve the roster after a disappointing year where his club missed the postseason in Juan Soto’s first season on the roster. With Diaz and Alonso officially out of the organization, that pressure is rising even more.
How will the Mets respond to those losses? A pursuit of Munetaka Murakami or Kazuma Okamoto could make some sense to replace Alonso at first base, and Robert Suarez remains a logical replacement for Diaz (alongside Devin Williams) in the ninth inning next year. Those replacements won’t be enough by themselves, however. New York remains in desperate need of help in the outfield and continues to look for help at the front of their rotation. Bringing in a top free agent like Kyle Tucker in the outfield or Tatsuya Imai in the rotation would surely help fans in Queens get over the losses of franchise stalwarts like Alonso this winter.
2. What’s next for the Orioles?
On the other side of the coin, fans in Baltimore were jubilant as their club finally made the big splash they’ve been hoping to see for years. With Alonso now in the fold for the next five seasons, the Orioles seem unlikely to take their foot off the gas just yet. They remain involved in the market for high-end rotation pieces, and it wouldn’t be a shock to see them add someone like Framber Valdez to the front of their rotation in free agency alongside Alonso. Of course, the free agent market isn’t the only avenue for improvement available. The addition of Alonso displaces Coby Mayo and Ryan Mountcastle on the team’s depth chart, and Mayo in particular could be the sort of high-end trade chip who makes landing a top starter in trade like Edward Cabrera or MacKenzie Gore (both of whom Baltimore has been connected to this winter) all the more feasible. What’s the next move for president of baseball operations Mike Elias?
3. When will the dam break in the rotation market?
For all the activity in and around this year’s winter meetings, things have remained quiet on the rotation front this winter. The market for relievers has been bustling all winter, with only a handful of the top closing options still available. The market for position players has been slower, but hitters did start to come off the board after Kyle Schwarber re-upped in Philadelphia, with Alonso and Mike Yastrzemski both signing yesterday. Every top free agent starter remains on the market besides Dylan Cease, however, and the trade market has seen no movement outside of the Red Sox adding Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo.
Will things get moving in the coming days? It’s certainly possible. This week’s meetings surely hosted a number of important conversations between buyers and sellers on the trade markets, giving teams like the Mets, Orioles, and Cubs a better idea of which starters could actually be attainable for them while allowing sellers like the Marlins and Nationals to see which teams might come closest to their asking prices. In free agency, meanwhile, some reporting has indicated that Imai will begin visiting teams now that the Winter Meetings have come to a close with an eye towards signing before the holidays. Given that Imai’s posting window closes on January 2, the right-hander’s free agency could potentially serve as a catalyst that kicks the larger market for starting pitching into gear.

Has Coby Mayo proved that he can hit upper level pitching enough to be the center point of a higher tiered trade for a starting pitcher ??
I can say I don’t want him one for one with a trade for Mitch Keller (a non-top tier pitcher) so, I’d say no.
Balt should say no straight up for Keller as he’s expensive. Mayo starting hitting at a high level in sept.
Started hitting in September? You mean when teams not in the hunt bring up farm hands to see what they got? Poor sample size.
1 for 1 maybe-maybe not, but a smaller piece with Mayo would be more than fine for Keller. It only took two pieces for Burnes, who’s in a much higher tier.
One of the problems with Mayo being the highest piece in a trade for Keller is specific to the Pirates–we don’t need a right handed bat that hasn’t shown proven power. PNC Park wouldn’t be a great fit for Mayo.
Well I’m just talking talent for talent. I haven’t heard a link between the teams.
Mayo has the talent for sure, and hasn’t gotten a full shake yet. He’d be a great chip in any SP deal.
Keller is cheap, not expensive
Maybe for a 4th starter caliber, but someone in demand will warrant a better headliner. Groupthink industry prospect rankers (and any writers who echoed them for couple years)don’t like to admit when they are off.
The one stud from Balt overhyped system was Gunnar (not even a first rounder). Westburg also good-but on IL too much. The 1/1 guys from tank and Basallo need to step up.
My understanding of Prospects is that they have not proven anything against MLB pitching. (If you meant AAA, then yes, Mayo has proven it).
You can project, maybe predict, but no proof on players with less than 1 year of service.
Mayo wasn’t that great in AAA last year.
He looked amazing in September. He was always going to take a while longer due to his size and swing.
Nope. Just came here to say that. He ain’t headlining a Gore trade (or even Cabrera, although the Marlins extreme need for an affordable 1B may make that a different calculation).
In this market, Mayo could not be more valuable
What market? 1B are not generally valuable at all.
Mayo had a good month statistically in September, but the strike out rate is still concerning. Mayo won’t headline a deal for Gore in my view. Honestly, A Keller/Mayo focused deal does make sense. I know Keller isn’t a superstar, but he’s really dependable and maybe getting over to Baltimore will unlock more. Other options in Pittsburgh are Michael Burrows (who is underrated and Houston is said to like him), but do you trust Burrows more than Keller? I also tend to believe Keller won’t be traded this off-season. Pirates have to send a message to their fans they want to win and trading a guy who is solid, if not spectacular, who takes the ball every 5th keeping your team in the game would not be a good message to the fans.
Pirates need Lowe and mayo. They should be all over him
PIrates have loads of pitching talent. Trading their 5th guy for a hitter is PRECISELY the right message to the fans.
A .217 hitter is not a high-end trade chip. We used to refer to players like Mayo as an AOO. Another Overrated Oriole.
You do not understand the market conditions and Pittsburghs budget restraints
I think you’re overvaluing Mayo’s potential and undervaluing Keller’s dependability.
Mayo could turn things around and turn into a high-profile trade target by the trade deadline mid-season and give a really good return for the Orioles if they’re competing as they’re expected to. But he doesn’t have that value right now.
Keller, meanwhile, has proven himself as a 3/4 starter. He’s not the most attractive pitcher but definitely worth more than Mayo, particularly as starting pitching is in short supply and middling (so far, again, he could be much better) right-hand bats are currently glutting the market.
If you actually think Mitch Keller, a 30 year old 2 WAR pitcher making 15m a year, has more trade value than Mayo, who is just a couple months beyond prospect status as a consensus top 25 prospect in baseball, you are really kidding yourself.
No he’s right. Keller is a league average pitcher. Mayo (so far) is a failed big-time prospect playing a low value position. There are LOTS of dudes like that around. There aren’t lots of healthy, 30-start SP’s who are capable of delivering league average results around.
I’d say Mayo right now is worth a good reliever.
There’s not a top 25 prospect, in mob history that failed after 250 at bats. Dude is 24 and has a 25 homer season already. Sure there’s concern, but for the price it’s worth it
This gives me hope that Henry Davis, top overall prospect in MLB before he was moved up to MLB will figure it out. 660 PAs in, though, and he still has -1.4 WAR…
Ha ! I’m from the louisville area. That was a really bad pick. Taking a catcher that may have to come off position ?
Davis was never the top overall prospect. He was taken number 1 because would sign for less than the actual best prospect in that years draft. Which the pirates could possibly justify becasue they spent the money they saved on other good draftees.
Man, you’re right. Totally thought he was. Good call.
Terrible draft strategy
Marlins fan here. Yesterday there were lots of comments about Mayo for Cabrera. IMO, the trade should be something like Mayo and a top 15-20 prospect or a controllable reliever for Cabrera.
Also IMO -though none of my business-, Gore would require Mayo and a top prospect just because he has more control years and has yet to reach his full potential.
And about Keller, that’s a tough call. Keller is very dependable, will give the team at least 150 innings of 4-4.50 ERA and that’s pretty valuable, and his contract is also team-friendly… But is not “young” and has no upside. Maybe 1-on-1 but with some prospects changing sides as well.
I just checked Gore’s service time and has more than Cabrera. I take what I said back, Eddy should be more valuable.
Mayo is younger than Judge was when he started with a .179 batting average and lower war. You know who hit .211 and was worth 0 WAR in their first full season? A guy named Kyle Schwarber.
Mayo showed every sign of things clicking in September. He is a stellar athlete. It often takes several months to a year for prospects of this variety (size) to start to clock at the plate at the major league level. Your “AOO” things makes look like an uninformed troll or a ragebait bot.
Yeah I don’t think discounting Mayo is something the O’s are going to be doing and honestly neither should we.
Putting him in a package for ECab or Gore has a lot of value and I agree with Habeto for Keller it’d probably be 1v1 with a couple of prospects going both ways. Keller hasn’t gotten better as he’s gotten into his prime, the opposite actually and while he’s a viable 3/4/5 he shouldn’t be valued more.
As a Pirates fan, I don’t follow Orioles prospects as closely as y’all do obviously, so perhaps he is much better than it seems. But these stats are the same things we were saying about Henry Davis and Oneil Cruz. Maybe Mayo will turn out differently than Davis and Cruz (and I honestly can’t give up on Davis just cause I like his player mentality) but it is just plain true that Mayo has not yet proven himself. He very well could be great but a month of stellar play doesn’t necessarily prove anything when it comes to trading for a proven arm.
And the markets for SP is definitely more competitive than 1B prospects to be. So WAR comparisons aren’t necessarily helpful here.
Also, part of the equation is what the Pirates need. If we trade Keller for someone like Mayo who *could* be good but is decidely unproven thus far, it would be seen as an abject failure of our front office. We need a proven bat now and Keller (combined with another prospect) should bring back a proven bat not a hoped for one.
Keller is a good pitcher. But his ceiling is set. Youre not giving Mayo any credit for having a much bigger upside, which would factor into any trade.
And this is why is up to the Orioles to decide who to trade with, and who much are they willing to pay.
Do they need a dependable arm to help them navigate through the entire season (Keller)? Or do they want a talented, front of the rotation arm with some injury risk (Cabrera)? Or maybe something in between (Gore)?
What it is for sure is that one of the Mayo, Mountcastle, and Basallo is on his way out of Baltimore.
They do have a Keller-type arm in Kremer, so I would say Keller shouldn’t be a priority. They need either an ace or a #2 if they want to beat NYY and TOR.
The Rockies signed, off of waivers, a journeyman 1B named Blaine Crim last year, off the Rangers AAA team. Crim and Mayo have nearly identical minor league numbers.
Crim is older and obviously not worth as much, but 24 year olds (like Mayo) who hit in the minors but not (so far) in the majors and can only play 1B are just not worth that much.
Is there any reason you guys are not going with Basallo as your catcher and trading Rutschman? I haven’t followed your catching situation much at all but I feel like Basallo’s future at 1B is dim given the Alonso signing and keeping either Mountcastle or Mayo (or both, I guess if something goes wrong in the trade market).
Seam:
So Crim’s hitting isnt as good as Mayo’s. After all, Crim played in the PCL, aka the Arena Football League of baseball. For example, the Mariners have their top pitchers skip the PCL because they dont want them to get shell-shocked while they develop.
Also, age is a big factor as Crim is a year older than AAA average last year, while Mayo is more than four years younger than AAA average.
——–
I dont think you thought that one through.
Habeto — Basallo is not getting traded. He’s the first International signed and developed player…since decades. They signed him up for 9 years at club friendly rates (he won’t make more than 10 million until after Pete’s deal is done).
Not getting traded: Basallo or Henderson.
99.99% not being traded: Holiday and Bradish.
Everyone else, yeah sure. Got a great discount on an All Star closer that on the mend. Again…
And that makes completely, totally sense. Focusing on the surplus at 1B, then it is pretty much Mayo or Mountcastle.
M’castle won’t net any impactful starter, so all roads are leading to Mayo. The good thing about it is that you guys have several potential trade partners: Cabrera, Gore, Keller… but I would add arms like Freddy Peralta, Griffin Jax, or even Nick Lodolo. Most of them would require more than Mayo, but you get the point: the most value out of what you are willing to give up.
In all cases, and if I’m the Marlins POBO, I’d offer you two trades, either:
1. Mayo and Austin Overn (#30) for Ryan Weathers and Anthony Bender
OR
2. Edward Cabrera for Mayo and Bradfield Jr.
Habeto — For sure Mayo is enough to headline any trade, but headline is the key word. That being the case, there are all sorts of scenarios for a TOR arm.
Mike Elias spent the 2025 trade-deadline filling the farm with options for trades. It’s easier to see a trade with DC that may have any easier time taking prospects back that are further from the Show than the Marlins would like.
I know the O’s like Bradfield because he’s a sure fire CF, and the Orioles are weak there, but I’m not too sure others think of Bradfield as well as the O’s do. If it gets Edward Cabrera, it’s done.
No but he was better towards the end of the season. Probably not league average but better than he was… but you cant deny his power is off the charts and I would argue needs regular abs to find his place. Which he wont be getting now. Showers is a perfect example of a guy who’s blocked and just needs some seasoning that wont happen in his current situation.
Will see if Mets are willing to sign any long term deals. Appears Stearns is in control and he isn’t signing deals where players will be past there prime… I can see them signing a couple guys to short term deals but don’t see them signing Tucker or any of the Japanese players… Also, Stearns wants the young guys to play Baty, Benge, Mauricio, Vientos and Williams, step up and join the young pitchers….time to deliver!!!
Maybe, I don’t think the Mets fan base is gonna be willing to suffer through losing seasons relying on too many young guys.
It’s really easy to say just play this young guy. Lots of young guys don’t succeed right away. Some not at all.
My guess is they will pivot to other guys.
“Maybe, I don’t think the Mets fan base is gonna be willing to suffer through losing seasons relying on too many young guys”
Well relying on older players we barely ever make playoffs and only been past NLDS TWICE in a decade.
I’m fine letting the kids fill up as many positions as possible, seeing what’s what, THEN signing on to players who fill voids.
I don’t see the logic in signing players to long term deals now when we’re not a balanced team. It’s like buying a bunch of random ingredients not knowing what you’re trying to cook.
People are acting like if we don’t win now we never will? What the hell is that? We’ve always been trash but now there’s some deadline?
I don’t want to hear about Cohens “championship in first 5 years” crap. David Stearns is not beholden to something Cohen said while boasting and posturing to the media YEARS before he was a member of the franchise.
He’s a billionaire, they all say stupid crap to influence media and idiots.
I think you will be in the minority when it comes to Mets fans. Which is who I referenced.
I’m Not saying they should spend on aging players. I’m saying the expectation of many Mets fans is that big bucks Cohen spends his way to a championship.
There are lots of ways to build a core. Look at the dodgers…they have what smith? As their main homegrown core member?
I get they have pages and some others on the team. I’m talking core guys.
How old and how long are the dodgers signed up to?
Betts age years left
Freeman
Ohtani
Smith
Snell
These dudes have long contracts that pay them into mid 30’s or longer. Freeman’s is lessor now but wasn’t short when he signed it. Through what age.
Point being who in the hack has a young core than it’s been going good for and won? A couple of teams in recent years?
Is the Phillies core mainly homegrown?
Mets core may not be the one they need but you don’t have to create this homegrown core to be good. Unless you don’t have real money to spend. The Mets have the money. The just need to select the right players.
Not sure why you left out ALL the homegrown dodger pitching, ranging from HoF to trade pieces.
Even ignoring that, the Dodgers ABSOLUTELY had homegrowns play a factor in getting here.
They were able to let Belli walk, like Pete.
They were able to trade young guys for Mookie Betts and others.
Then, when the team was more fundamentally sound, signing superstars.
I left them out because most of the homegrown pitching hasn’t done much to lead them to back to back World Series titles.
If you want to go back to years ago, okay.
I also said core guys. List their core guys that are homegrown?
As far as a farm system to add guys. The Mets have a farm system right now that they could trade for just about anyone or more than anyone.
Dodgers position players
Betts
Freeman
Ohtani
Muncy
Teoscar
Smith (homegrown)
Edman
Pages (homegrown, was benched)
LF is open but last year wasn’t homegrown.
Two guys of 9 that are homegrown.
Starters
Ohtani 1
Snell 2
Yamamoto 3
Kershaw (homegrown, now gown)
Glasnow 4
Sasaki 5
Sheehan (homegrown) 6
The numbers are their projected starters this year…6 of them, 1 being homegrown.
Pen has some more potential homegrown players. Though their top two guys are Diaz and Scott, neither are homegrown.
Dodgers have prospects that fill holes. They aren’t the core of the team. They have prospects that allow them to trade for anyone.
The Dodgers don’t have a big part of them team being homegrown then fill in with others. It’s just the opposite.
“If you want to go back to years ago, okay. ”
Yeah, we’re talking about the Dodgers, Friedman took over in 2015.
I’m telling you the value with prospects is having those low cost options to choose whether or not to keep, trade or release and you’re being pedantic about who is on the 2025 team.
You’re skipping all the prospects who got them to this point.
I’m not really interested in splitting hairs with you on this.
This started with the whole let the kids play.
Wanting the kids to all be given a chance to earn spots then fill in with what’s needed. That’s fine and lots of low payroll teams do that.
The dodgers don’t do that…they sign or trade for mlb guys then use the kids to fill in where it’s needed. Building a great farm system gives you options to do this. The Mets farm system is pretty good right now.
Mets aren’t a low payroll team. They aren’t a team that needs to do the let the kids play and fill in later.
Lol Same Old Mets the Wilpon / Sandy Alderson Mets are baaack!
Mets will Met
Cohen is now focused on his Casino Construction Project in the parking lots next to Citi Field. Mets fans enjoy the construction noise and activity. No room for parking who wants fans for the next 3 years.
You can always take the LIRR from Penn Station or Grand Central Terminal. That way you avoid the bridge-and-tunnel crowd who’ll get lost looking for Citi Field.
No. 7 Train for me and if I drive I know where to park in Corona and cross the GCP on Roosevelt Ave. right into Citi Field.
Hit the Lemon Ice King on the way out to the LIE.
“Mets will Met” – my thoughts immediately upon reading about them. They have little in terms of prospects to make trades or fill holes if they trade off the ML roster. They have money, but always seem to have two holes to fill and spend all their money filling one.
I seriously wish they’d get it figured out. As a Pittsburgher, I have no love for the Braves and hate all things Philly, and the other two teams in the division are still a mess.
Mets didnt even make the playoffs with a $341M payroll, last year. Yet, they still hadnt tied up two major players (Alonso and Diaz). Something wasnt right with that club.
Mets fans seem to have one mode — ‘Spend More Money’. You guys need a better strategy than that.
I bet a couple of years ago you were on the “Coupon” kick.
Not sure I understand. Mets fans are about spending, yet the Mets just let go of two quality pieces and did not spend. I am not sure what the Mets are doing, but they have a really nice farm system they can use to backfill some talent or trade for pieces. The Mets look lost in the wilderness right now, but maybe there is a method to their madness. They have some prospects I really do like.
They replaced Diaz before they lost him. And for some reason they’ve never liked Alonso. Their models may be expecting him to decline quickly. In any case, Ryan O’Hearn is almost as good a player. He’s available for half Pete’s price.
“If you’re always rational about every free agent, you will finish third on every free agent.” – Andrew Friedman
Not “every”, just the top 12 or so. The rest tend to go for about projected value or even lower.
Smart GMs, with a budget, can build a successful team from the remainders. 2013 Red Sox are a great example (Napoli, Victorino, Uehera, etc). While everyone was calling it ‘Dempster Diving’ they quietly won a World Championship.
The “World Championship” of Murica, F#&k Yeah!
It’s a quote, you can disagree with the GM of the Dodgers if you want. I’m just the messanger.
Sarcastic:
Dodgers said that? Figures. It reinforces my point, as Im talking about the teams that arent named Dodgers and Yankees.
Looking over Soto’s contract, I wonder if a couple 100 loss seasons by 2029 will cause him to opt out just to sign elsewhere with winning team and not be all that concerned with making less than he would by staying on the Mets. I mean unless he hits lead off, why ever pitch to him? LOL
If Soto is smart he will opt out…
Diaz and Alonso are with other teams because they chose to be–either because of the team, or because of the money–and that goes for both sides. The Mets didn’t want to pay more–and they might very well have been right in their choices. I wonder how much CBA uncertainty is playing a role in at least some team’s caution. Boras is a smart guy–the deal with Alonso is good for Alonso–which means that’s how Boras is really seeing this market
It ain’t about the money, it’s about two quality ballplayers not wanting to have their legacy tied to LOLmets.
And let’s be clear about Pete. He was a 3.6 fWAR player last year, and that was an excellent year for him, at age 30. Here are some other players around the league that were around that level:
Sal Frelick, Masyn Winn, Matt Chapman, Cedanne Rafaela, Shea Langeliers
All very solid players, no doubt. But we’re not talking about a superstar here. Alonso gets a lot of mileage out of those back to back All-Star HR Derby wins. But he’s just a very good player overall, not a great one, and he ain’t getting better. Ryan O’Hearn, who’s available as a free agent, is really just as good.
I heard a lot of people complimenting the Orioles for signing Alonso and trading for Ward because there’s a dirth of right-handed power bats, and the O’s went out and got two.
But they actually have three because last off season they signed the oft-injured muscle-head, Tyler O’Neill. Who was linked to the Pirates last off season.
O’Neill needs to be on another team if he is going to continue his streak of hitting a homer on six consecutive opening day games.
It’s an upside play for the Pirates or some other team, and he’s only due 16 per for two more years (with an opt out). But I would not be surprised if the O’s paid some of his contract down.
We’ll see. I think the O’s will make two sets of trades for starting pitchers with multiple Birds’ players, prospects and former prospects, flying out of B’more.
Before last year, I would have jumped at the chance for the Pirates to have him but given that he’s only been above league average as a hitter for 3 out of his 8 seasons, he’s far too risky of a bet for the Pirates to pay that amount for, particulary since it sounds like we might be able to get Polanco for less AAV than that (combined with the fact we don’t need more right-handed bats like O’Neill).
I wouldn’t give up anything of note for O’Neill. He has played over 96 games only twice in the last 8 years. He has almost no value.
The o’s farm system really got a jolt in the last calendar year —huge selloff at deadline as well as 7 picks in the top 93 in the 2025 draft (not to mention they will be picking high in next years draft). Yes mayo seems like a logical piece to move but they have a lot of talent on the farm again, and they have their comp balance pick to trade (was a piece of burnes deal)
I feel like the Astros are going to do something in the rotation market this week.
They are in the trade market but they should still sign someone like Giolito.
1. Sign O’Hearn
2. Sign Okamoto
3. Trade Keller and/or Burrows in a package for Adell or Duran or Abreu
Angels & maybe Red Sox want more pitching
We don’t need a Keller as we already have Kremer who is better in almost every facet of the game. Keller would be a 5 in our rotation and to get a 5 for one of our top prospects is criminal
Gore Lopez or Cabrera need to be the pitcher when we are talking about a Mayo trade.
It’s amazing how many fans are against giving up an “ol’reliable’ innings eater for Mayo. First of all, the Orioles know that Mayo’s elite power tool rating is more valuable than that. But secondly, Mayo would almost certainly not be given up as part of a one-for-one deal because he, by himself, wouldn’t net the top of rotation starter the Os need. Mayo and say Brandon Young and last year’s top pick, the catcher, English..
THAT could be what gets a conversation with the Nats about Gore started.
Trading for a highly touted prospect is always like the old game show Let’s Make a Deal. The contestant just won a new refrigerator and they are pretty happy, even though they already have three reliable ones ( in the kitchen, basement, and garage) but then ol’ Monty Hall comes along and says, I’ll offer you what’s behind Door Number 2 right now for the refrigerator. Or whatever is inside the large box you see onstage. Contestant says no. Because they’re afraid they’re going to end up with a broken down jalopy inside that giant box or a trio of Billy goats behind the door. But sometimes the contestant takes a chance, trades away the new item because they have plenty of them already, and they win a trip to Cancun or a brand new sports car. Particularly when the host starts saying…if you take the box, I’ll throw in 1…2…300 dollars. When the contestant still says no, he may even offer both the door AND the box AND cash. That’s more like what the Mayo for a front line pitcher conversation would be like. And everyone commenting here still wants to hang on to that refrigerator. LOL
Not sure Mayo is highly touted anymore.
If the Mets aren’t going to tear it all down (because of rumors now that Lindor & Soto aren’t getting along) than sign Murakami 1b, Bellinger RF, Ozuna DH,, Robert Suarez closer, Framber and either Imai or King, that can put the Mets back together. LETS GO COHEN, ITS YOUR $$
These Mets are giving early/mid 90’s vibes of having a high payroll but not necessarily being competitive. Stearns and Cohen have a lot of heavy lifting to do to right now to make this team better than even the Marlins
They could sign Tucker and have a $1 million payout every July 1 until 2069, since Bobby Bonilla Day will expire within a decade.
“Meanwhile” should START the sentence, not come in the middle between commas.
