The Red Sox and outfielder Wilyer Abreu had some extension talks a couple of years ago, reports Tim Healey of The Boston Globe. “It wasn’t the right moment to do it,” Abreu told the Globe. “So I just wanted to play and see what happened in the future.”
The Sox have done a number of extensions since Craig Breslow was hired as chief baseball officer in the fall of 2023. Brayan Bello and Ceddanne Rafaela were signed going into the 2024 season. One year later, Garrett Crochet and Kristian Campbell put pen to paper. In August of 2025, Roman Anthony inked an eight-year pact. Also in August, Aroldis Chapman secured a much more modest extension, adding an extra guaranteed year before he hit free agency.
Abreu was approached around the same time as Bello and Rafaela. At that time, Abreu had just 28 games under his belt. Star prospects can get huge contracts even with less than a year of service time. Anthony got a $130MM guarantee, for instance. Julio Rodríguez got $210MM from the Mariners. Wander Franco and Corbin Carroll also got into nine-figure territory.
But Abreu wasn’t quite ranked as high as those guys, so he wouldn’t have received an offer in that tier. He probably would have been closer to Rafaela, who got $49.3MM in new money. Campbell got about $59.2MM in new money a year later. Samuel Basallo got $67MM from the Orioles and Michael Harris II $72MM from Atlanta.
It’s unknown what the Sox offered. Whatever it was, Abreu decided to bet on himself instead. Since then, he has put together two solid seasons. He got into 247 games over the past two campaigns, hitting 37 home runs and stealing 14 bases. His combined .250/.320/.464 batting line translated to a 113 wRC+, indicating he was 13% better than league average. Add in some strong defensive grades and FanGraphs considered him to be worth 5.5 wins above replacement over those two seasons.
He has provided that value despite being mostly a strong-side platoon guy, with a career .205/.271/.318 line against lefty pitchers. The Sox have indicated they hope to give him more run against southpaws this year. Healey writes that Abreu spent the offseason working on getting better against lefties, in addition to getting into the best shape of his life. Time will tell if Abreu can unlock a new gear but he’s already proven to be valuable.
That hasn’t led to big earnings yet. His service time is just a bit north of two years, meaning he won’t qualify for arbitration until after the 2026 season. He’ll be slated for three arb seasons and is on pace for free agency after 2029. As players approach the open market, they generally gain more earning power, and that could be extra true for Abreu if he takes his performance to another level. The two sides could reignite extension talks but there doesn’t seem to be much smoke there. “I can listen,” Abreu said of the prospect of the Sox trying again, “but I haven’t talked to them.”
Another guy the Sox tried to extend a couple of years ago was first baseman Triston Casas, though nothing got done at that time either. Since then, he has effectively been on the opposite trajectory to Abreu, as he has struggled greatly in the past few years. Back in 2023, he seemed to establish himself as a legit threat, hitting 24 home runs and slashing .263/.367/.490 for a 131 wRC+. Torn cartilage in his ribcage limited him to 63 games in 2024. He got out to an awful start in 2025, hitting .182/.277/.303, before rupturing the patellar tendon in his left knee in May. He was on the injured list for the rest of the year and still isn’t 100%.
Casas spoke to Chris Cotillo of MassLive about the past extension talks, clearly putting his focus on the future. “I don’t have any regrets about the way that I handled the situation,” Casas said. “In the moments that I was not agreeing to anything long-term, I felt like I could take the field and post an .850 OPS rolling out of bed. I was just that confident, and I still think I am that type of player. I didn’t think that ’23 reflected my best baseball, and it was still great. Now, I feel like my best baseball is still ahead of me.”
Despite his talents, the Sox clearly felt they couldn’t rely on Casas after a couple of injury-marred years and with his status still questionable going into 2026. They acquired Willson Contreras this winter to cover first base.
That leaves Casas in a bit of an awkward spot now, as he’s getting healthy but may not have a spot when he’s ready. He’s still not playing in games but tells Cotillo he could be doing so by Opening Day “for some affiliate,” seemingly suggesting he could be on a minor league rehab assignment when the rest of the team starts the regular season. The designated hitter spot is pretty clogged at the moment, with the Red Sox having to find playing time for their outfield group, which consists of Abreu, Anthony, Rafaela, Jarren Duran and Masataka Yoshida.
Casas does have options and could be kept in the minors after his rehab is done, though that would arguably be a waste of his talents, considering how he has already shown himself capable of being a middle-of-the-order hitter in the big leagues. A trade would make some sense but perhaps the Sox don’t want to sell low on Casas. A few injuries could change the calculus but it will be interesting to see how the Sox navigate the apparent logjam in the coming weeks and months.
Infielder Brendan Rodgers is in camp on a minor league deal and looking to earn a roster spot but he departed today’s game with right shoulder pain. “It’s pretty sore right now,” Rodgers said to Christopher Smith of MassLive. “All the (strength) tests were actually promising. … So just trying to be optimistic and, see how we feel tomorrow.” Rodgers says he’s not scheduled to go for any imaging tonight. He underwent surgery on that shoulder back in 2019. He dislocated his left shoulder in 2023.
Rodgers is a tough fit for a bench infielder job. He’s been a subpar hitter throughout his career. He has often received strong defensive grades but hasn’t played a position other than second base since 2021. Teams generally need their bench infielders to provide more versatility than that. Even with the Romy González injury, the Sox have Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Andruw Monasterio, Anthony Seigler, Nate Eaton, Nick Sogard and Tsung-Che Cheng as healthy infielders on the roster.

Uhhhh Triston, 2023 WAS your best season. It’s been all downhill since then.
Yep, and when you are 25 or so and someone offers you $50 mil+(or whatever) which you’ll get by your 31st birthday, you take that. I know everyone eyes the $40 mil per year that Soto, Tucker, etc got, but let’s not forget, it’s $50 MILLION dollars(or whatever was offered). Not generational hundreds of millions, but holy cow, it’s a boatload of coin.
@casual….Correction, *many* take that $50 M. Some may have plenty of confidence in their own abilities and aim to be paid what the market will bear when they reach FA.
Having awareness of how one is motivated (internal vs external) is a big factor too.
Has anyone else noticed that Tristan Casas has never been seen or photographed in the same room, at the same as Bobby Dalbec?
Triston Casas is exhausting.
Keep him away from microphones at all costs.
Why? He was asked some questions and he answered them. Why do you find that exhausting?
Great summary! I’ve been a huge Abreu fan since Day One, but the difficulty against LHP and the inability to stay healthy for a full season are a concern. The health issues are a big reason why he each of the past two years he’s started out very strong in April/May and then faded, particularly in Sep/Oct.
If Abreu can stay healthy and put up even just a .750 OPS against LHP then he’s a lock for 30+ HR to go along with his GG defense. This is definitely a prove it season for him, Mayer, and Casas.
That is why I question making him into an everyday player. If he can’t last the whole season as a strong-side platoon bat starting 4 games a week, won’t he only break down faster if they try to start gum 6-7 games a week?
I wouldn’t lump Mayer in with those two. There is a lot riding on Mayer because there is no real backup plan if he falters or gets hurt, but at the end of the day he just turned 23 and has about 125 ML at-bats to his name. He doesn’t *have* to prove anything this year, although he will have every chance to and it’ll be outstanding news for the team if he does right away. It’ll also be understandable if he isn’t Nomar right off the bat. At his age he has plenty of time to improve and would have to be genuinely horrible to get written off after this season. At most you could say this season will be important for him trying to shake the “injury prone” reputation but that’s still not the same level of urgency as the other two.
On the other hand Wilyer is about to turn 27. He’s got a lot he has to prove in ’26 because if he can’t become passable against lefties now in his athletic prime and with a couple seasons under his belt, it will be fair to question whether he ever will. How he does this year will mark the difference between him being looked at as merely a nice complementary player vs. being a legit stud and building block of the lineup.
And Casas as a 26 year old has to prove he can even make contact with a ball enough to hold down a roster spot. If he continues to look like Bobby Dalbec this season he can count on being non-tendered or shipped for peanuts this winter to see if he can revive his career with some hopeless team like the Rockies.
Casas and Yoshida would probably both benefit from being traded to a smaller market team. They don’t really fit the Colorado timeline and the Rockies don’t have much in terms of talent in the minors. Speaking of Colorado, I have no idea what their plan is. This year they can’t even pick higher than 10th in the draft if they finish last again. Honestly they should try to move Condon and Holiday for as much young talent as possible. 3-1 returns on both guys for top 200 prospects they should jump on it.
Colorado having no plan, no clear path to becoming a contender within 5 years, no farm system, and no meaningful organizational depth at first base is exactly why they should be very interested in trying to re-launch the career of a guy like Casas. If he goes and has a monster year or two there they will be able to trade him for some prospect capital that actually would help stock their farm system.
Yoshida I have always felt would be a perfect fit for a team like KC or Minnesota that doesn’t necessarily emphasize blasting a ton of homers and prefers to emphasize putting the ball in play. He could line singles and doubles all over their ballparks. But with his salary and inability to play the outfield I’m just not sure they will ever match up for a trade.
Yeah they absolutely need to take some shots. Otherwise the future is pretty grim all around.
Colorado has a timeline?
Yeah probably not.
Just saying a healthy Yoshida hits 25+ HR’s if he was playing 81 Home Games at Yankee Stadium.
My point is he could be a productive player if healthy for an entire season…. but it won’t be with the Red Sox.
Trade him to the Cardinals for lefty reliever Romero and throw in another one of Bloom’s draft picks that he made while with the Sox and throw in 12 million which makes him 12 mill for this year and next.
I am going to be very curious to see how Casas comes back. He is such a huge question mark. I kept waiting for Dalbec to have that big breakout year and it never came. I think Casas is a step above, but we really don’t know. I have much more confidence that Abreu is going to breakthrough this year.
Good point about Mayer, we have very little to go on based on his limited playing time. I hope he is the real deal and gets plenty of starts at either 2nd or 3rd this year (assume 2nd and Durbin at 3rd).
I agree I think Casas is actually a much better player than Dalbec ever was. I think Dalbec just caught lightning in a bottle in 2021 but otherwise his track record in the minors kind of hinted all along that strikeouts were going to be a problem and that while his power was big, he wasn’t much of a hitter. He’s fulfilled his destiny as a guy just good enough to rake at AAA but useless at the next level.
To be fair we always knew Casas was going to whiff plenty too, but he flashed much better bat to ball skills than Dalbec ever did. It’s a shame he hasn’t been able to fully put it together yet but I’m still rooting for the kid. Hopefully he can have a strong bounce back and be the big power stick they failed to sign over the winter.
Dirty – Casas had a .365 OBP his first two seasons (2022/2023), therefore I have no problem with his strikeouts.
Absolutely. If he’s hitting/getting on, I don’t care if he strikes out too. Dalbec never hit or walked enough to justify it. He was a 2 outcome guy.

Career of Casas in MLB

Career of Dalbec in MLB
1065PA, 36.6%K!!!, 7.7BB, .713 OPS
I don’t know why you’re comparing Casas to Dalbec; they’re clearly in different weight classes.
Dalbec was always a red flag because he’s already struck out over 30% in the minor leagues, which can’t be said for Casas.
The only problem with Casas is his health, if he is healthy he is a power and a big bonus for the Red Sox.
I am comparing them because Casas before his injury was going through an ugly regression in his plate discipline – see K% near 32% in 2024 and BB% dropped below 10% in 2025, with slower avg. exit velocities in each year’s data from 2023, 2024, and 2025. The aggregate numbers look great because he was that good in 2023 and April of ’24 but he’s been moving in the wrong direction ever since. So yes Casas does need to prove he is not going to wash out like Dalbec did.
I already said in one of my posts you’re ripping that I see Casas as being a much better skilled baseball player than Dalbec ever was, but if the results end up being the same (all hype, little production) in the end, what difference does it make?
I want better for Casas, to be clear. I hope he fulfills his promise and gets back to looking like the guy we thought he’d be by now. I’m not rooting against the kid but if he isn’t able to figure it out this year then you’re looking at a guy who needs a long leash to play through struggles but he’s on a team that is trying to win now. They won’t put up with that forever.

Read my post again carefully.
Dalbec already showed a strikeout rate above 30% in the minor leagues—that was a red flag; his strikeout rate increased even more in MLB.
Casas didn’t have these problems in the minor leagues.
In 2024, the sample size is too small to draw conclusions about Casas’s strikeout rate.
It’s safe to say that in 2025, Casas returned to a 24.1% strikeout rate, Also, the sample size is small, so there’s no point in comparing.
You need to look at Casas’s full season.
But even then, these are players with different potential.
They’re completely incomparable players.
Dalbec is a triple-A player
Casas is an MLB player.
I hope I’m wrong and I hope you’re right. In my opinion looking only at season-level data with young players can cause you to miss a lot. For example, it happens all the time where guys come up and get off to a scorching hot start, and then pitchers figure them out and they never look that good again. The reverse also happens probably even more where guys need some time to adjust before they fully get going. Aggregate data won’t show you those inflection points, and the small sample size argument only goes so far because guys who post sub-.600 OPSes for an extended period of time rarely go on to give you a large sample size to work with anyway.
You are taking the comparison too literally. I am not saying they have the same skill set and same weaknesses. I am saying if Dalbec does not reverse some worrying trends with his approach that started showing up in 2024 and mostly continued in 2025 until his injury, he is heading to the same fate as Dalbec.
Dirty – I don’t mean to interject here, but Dalbec is heading to the same fate as Dalbec? ;O)
I’m really looking forward to today’s game, lots of starters playing their last game before leaving for the WBC.

Sale vs Bello should be a great matchup. The game is free on MLB.TV and on WEEI.
Wish I was there!
Whoops! Good catch on the typo. Obviously should have said Casas needs to reverse some worrying trends. My hope is that since they have first base covered with Contreras and plenty of bats who should be “good enough” for the DH mix for a time, he won’t be overly pressured to rush back too soon before he’s comfortable.
Fever- I did not see the game but this is twice that Bello’s numbers have not been impressive (obviously still very early). How did he look? Who is standing out in spring training so far? Wish I had more time to try to watch games, but not easy as a teacher to find time until the summer.
Uncle – No need to worry about Bello at all. He’s older now and he has a longterm contract, so results in ST aren’t that important. Working on pitches is the priority, and that’s what he is doing. He is re-establishing the changeup and adding a devastating curve, that’s why the results haven’t been there yet. As further proof, he’s shown no signs of anger or frustration as he normally does when things don’t go well in the regular season. He will be fine.
The pitcher I wonder about is Gray, who hasn’t pitched yet but is scheduled tomorrow. Cora said Gray’s age (referencing a “veteran program”) is the reason he hasn’t pitched yet, which is ironic considering Sale is the same age and has already pitched twice. Let’s hope they are not trying to cover up some health concern with Gray.
Saying who is standing out is a loaded question, veteran players with secure jobs don’t push hard for results in ST. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to spend as much time in camp as I usually do because I am out of state for a while, but from what I’ve seen and heard Duran is the one who stands out the most. He is driving the ball like he did 2 years ago, in part trying to adapt to the 3-hole. His homerun off the lefty Sale was quite impressive. I think Duran will be silencing the critics who have claimed 2024 was a fluke.
I admire you for being a teacher, it’s an important profession.
Only thing I worry about is that his changeup looks exactly like it did last year. No bueno
Fever- Sounds like it is even more significant that they did not trade Duran. I still keep seeing rumors for him being moved for someone like Baty which seems like the dumbest possible move. Thanks for the update. Reading the box score really limits the feel of what is really happening in the games.
Uncle – All reports on Duran are the Red Sox value him for highly, therefore there’s zero chance of trading him for Baty. And with 3 years of team control remaining, there’s no reason to trade Duran now. As we saw today, serious injuries could happen at any moment. Thankfully it was avoided with Roman.
Yes box scores and stats don’t give the full picture, watching the games does. I’ll watch as much of the WBC as I can, but it’s when I get my new MLB.TV subscription for the year that I really can follow the team as closely as I prefer.
Dirty – I included Mayer because he can’t stay healthy, so he needs to prove his injuries are behind him. If he didn’t have the injury issues and was on schedule for OD, I’d say start him at 2B. I do NOT want IKF as the OD 2B, but I think he very likely will be.
Meyer should be OD Short Stop, Story should be at 2B.
“Prove it” year but not “make or break” year. I’m on board with that for those 3. Abreu proves he can be an everyday player and he should be extended.
That doesn’t change the fact that as a 23 year old with hardly any big league experience, Mayer does not in fact have to prove anything this year. Xander Bogaerts struggled and hardly proved anything his first full season. Did he not still turn out to be an excellent player who provided plenty of long term value?
Again, I didn’t say “make or break” as if I’m implying he’s out the door if he gets hurt or doesn’t hit. But Marcelo absolutely has to “prove” he can stay healthy. If his body fails him again, he’s no longer going to be considered the heir apparent to 2B/3B/ or SS.
I don’t even know what you’re trying to argue semantically, then. I didn’t say you said it’s a make or break year. You said he has to prove something this year, and I said no he doesn’t. He is young enough still that we should be prepared for the possibility he doesn’t prove anything until next year.
Now you, after saying it is not a “make or break” year for him, go on to say if he has injuries again that he will no longer be considered a vital piece of the team’s future infield plans? How is that *not* make or break? One year to solidify yourself as “the guy” or else you’re out sounds pretty make or break to me.
Mayer has too much invested in him to be out the door if he cannot finish the year healthy. But, after ending 4 consecutive years on the IL… there are major questions, including from those of us who were skeptical of his being annointed as the SS of the future back when he was drafted and had proven *nothing* while Bogey instantly got deemed expendable.
This year probably isnt mayer fighting to stay on the team. But if this year ends like the others I do see him moved into a depth role if the team can obtain a better option via trade or free agency. This is probably Mayer’s last turn with an inside track where the job is his to lose. After this season, he’ll need to fight tooth and nail to reclaim a starter role.
As far as Casas is concerned, he needs a little more focus on baseball and a little less focus on nail painting, sunbathing, and face mask sideshow hijinks.
First off lose the attitude. I wasn’t replying to you. I agreed with was FPG said but interjected and clarified that it was not a “make or break” year, but a “prove it” year. You’ve jumped in between and are standing your ground on your belief that Marcelo “doesn’t have to prove anything”… which is flat out wrong. Sorry. He does. He has to prove that this isnt going to be a 4th straight lost season to injuries since he was drafted 4th overall. Yep he’s only 23 and no one has given up on him yet, but if he can’t “prove” that he can play more than 90 games (most he’s ever played), then that’s a pretty serious red flag… probably making 2027 the “make or break” year.
If you are just dying to argue with someone, move along. Someone will bite. Until then, consider reviewing your comments before posting and ask yourself if they add to the conversation. You come across a bit more aggressively over critical than necessary. Cheers 🍻
Exactly
Sean – As always, you get it!
With Mayer getting injured basically every year despite his young age, how will he stay healthy as he gets into his late 20’s?
Even if the surgery resolved his wrist issue permanently, what about his chronic back issue?
Dirty – Speaking only for myself (since I first mentioned the “prove it”), if Mayer can’t stay healthy this year then the Sox are forced to move another player into the starting 2B role. It would also mean far less chance of an extension, and a greater chance he is packaged in a trade for a quality player.
Whereas “make or break” implies he gets buried in the minors or traded for a “change of scenery”, thus following in the footsteps of Grissom.
Make or break means potentially career derailing, and I agree he’s too young to be written off at age 24 (after this season).
The back issues aren’t chronic. That’s more made up nonsense.
GaSox – Did you hear his explanation for wearing the ski mask? He said it’s because he was cold.
Either way it’s total crap. You know why? Because there are pictures of him sunning himself on the grass in Fenway, during the summer, with bare feet and shorts and shirtless, wearing the same mask. Obviously he wasn’t cold then.
GA: people are spending way too much time obessing over Casas apperance and habits. Fans know he’s quirky. as long as he is putting the work in (which by all accounts he is) it doesn’t matter what color his nails are or if he’s wearing a face maskt.
Forced to move another player into starting 2B in the sense that someone has to physically play second base when he can’t, yes.
Given his billing as one of the team’s top prospects and someone they’ve been waiting several years for I think it’s doubtful they move off of considering him the future leader of the infield after this year unless he manages to look truly downright godawful with nothing positive to build off of.
I appreciate there is the difference you explained between prove it vs. make or break, I just don’t think either quite applies to him yet. I think neither label applies to Mayer this year, the prove it label applies to Abreu, and Casas is in the most dire of straits where he both has something he needs to prove and it’s a make or break proposition for his tenure in Boston.
Acell- I’ll respect your right to your opinion.
However, others tend to expect less, as you call it, ‘quirkyness’ and more ‘professionalism’ out of those who wear the team uniform.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and, we could debate the degree to which things create unnecessary tension within the clubhouse or distractions to the goal of the team.
At least if the mlb thing doesnt work out Casas is polishing his resume for the bananas
Excuse me, I was confused and trying to make sense of what you were saying because my notifications said you were replying to me. Makes a lot more sense that you weren’t.
Any hostility perceived as coming from my end is just that: perceived, not intended, so sorry if I’ve offended but you can settle down too. That’s just my writing style, I tend to be matter of fact and err on the side of belaboring the point because text is so easily misconstrued. Hence why I don’t bother approaching the message boards with the unserious and more humorous tone I bring to speaking.
But apparently I’m not allowed to participate in conversations unless I agree with everything that has been said, because disagreeing with a point someone made and expressing a specific reason why means I’m dying to argue with someone. I’m not looking to have any flame wars here so I’ll go ahead and make sure to only reply to any of your future comments if I agree with them if that’s the kind of conversation you find most interesting. Cheers!
GA, you are spot on that Casas to this point has seemed far more interested in cultivating his reputation as a “quirky guy” than honing his craft. I haven’t given up hope on him yet but I am definitely at the point where I only want to hear his name because of something he did on the field or in the batter’s box.
DW – dont let anyone else here get you down or change your posting style or frequency.
I enjoy reading your thoughts on here, and it’d be a shame if they became fewer and further between

Not at all what I said… but I have a feeling that you know that. You’ve clearly taken Gas lighting 101 at some point in your life. It’s a required course for those of us who grew up in New England. Cheers 🍻
Appreciate the kind words GA, and likewise! I enjoy that there are a lot of fellow Red Sox fans on here who aren’t shy about speaking their minds. Definitely get some interesting perspectives if nothing else. Though I can safely say for myself that I have learned plenty from conversations on here and am glad I can count on it as a place to engage with informed people and it’s not just a hivemind like other prominent websites turn into.
GaSox – I admit I don’t follow the ‘Nanas too much, didn’t even think about them as I drove through Savannah twice recently, but don’t they have to be really athletic and good with the glove? That would rule out Casas, although I get you’re probably thinking he would fit in appearance-wise.
I think Casas will eventually end up with his own podcast and maybe radio show. The dude loves to talk, a lot. It’s like Kevin Millar raised him.
Dirty – I often wish we’d all be having these discussions while sitting around a Boston bar owned by Bill Lee, as being able to see facial expressions would make it even more enjoyable.
GA: to this point I have not seen him display a lack of professionalism. He shows up to work, plays hard and the only alleged players that seemed to have a problem with him aren’t on the team anymore and I’d hazard a guess to say those “veterans” were the same ones that a showed a lack of professionalism themselves toward him and other younger players like Duran spoke about.
disagree Dirty water. Fans and others to overanalyze and overact to Casas habits because baseball players used to lack personality.
Today was a great step towards proving he belongs in the starting lineup. I completely support this kid and I’ve always been confident he was the correct pick at #4. Juuuuuuust need to see some September baseball from him!
Sean – Absolutely! I am very high on Marcelo and have been for a very long time. He is so talented in the field at multiple positions, and his mental makeup is fantastic. Cool as a cucumber with a great personality. I really, really hope he can stay healthy. And I hope he gets a fair chance to head north with the team, instead of being kept down for service time purposes.
“ Just a .750 OPS” left on left is no small feat for a guy with a career .581. A .750 OPS is above average for all MLB hitters regardless of platoon split and likely well above the left on left average. Plus they don’t really need him to do that with their surplus of (unfortunately also lefty) corner OFs
“Just a .750 OPS against LHP”. Fat chance he goes from .589 to anywhere near .700 much less .750.
Loving this Ward kid! Whatcha think about him?
Sean – Wow he’s fast!
Sean – Obviously I should have also said Ward reminds me of Duran, opposing fielders cannot sleep on this kid. We saw that today, TWICE!
Love it when a player is both incredibly fast and super aggressive on the bases. The Braves looked around when he took 2B on that single to the outfield as if he was cheating lol
Casas has had injury problems and is on a team who os trying to win now. He’s probably a better fit on a team that will actually allow him to play.
Seems like Boston could work out some sort of trade involving Casas and Yoshida, with a rebuilding team willing to take on some salary.
Casas on his own makes little enough he could be dumped, but, of the team doesnt feel its getting value back commensurate with the potential things go nowhere. And thats whats happened so far.
Yoshida is simply overpaid. Henry is on record of Bing particularly adverse to paying guys to play on other teams.
After how Sale turned out, I dont expect Henry to greenlight eating a massive amount of salary again anytime soon. Im surprised he covered 4m/yr on Hicks so soon.
GaSox – They are paying a good amount of Hicks’ salary to pitch for another team. But overall I agree with that belief, if a player has value don’t pay him to play elsewhere. The Red Sox are not a deep enough team to dump Yoshida’s contract just to open up a roster spot.
Is it really much different from paying pitchers for two years when they don’t pitch the first? The Red Sox have done that with Giolito, a small return, Hendricks, less than nothing in return, and now Sandoval, who doesn’t have a place in the rotation and has never pitched out of the pen. Just find a way to get Yoshida off the roster because there are several other players who can fill his role and not weaken the lineup. Right now there is a surplus of infielders that is almost as bad as the outfield situation. Anyone of that group is of more value to the roster than Yoshida.
life – Name one guy in the surplus (not projected to be on the OD roster) who is a better hitter than Yoshida.
Even projected starters like IKF are far worse hitters.

I don’t understand why so many people want to get rid of Yoshida.
He’s a good touch forward and has dealt with injuries over the last two seasons, but September 2025 and the playoffs showed it’s too early to write him off.
Given the uncertainty surrounding Romy, Casas and Mayer (where they will be at the start of the season), Yoshida isn’t blocking anyone.
Fever- It doesn’t seem like Yoshida has been getting many at bats this spring. I know he is just a DH and maybe they are trying to look at the young players, but I expected to see him in the lineup more often. I have not missed any info. about an injury have I?
Uncle – I’m glad you asked!
My man Yoshida played left field on the 20th against Northeastern and on the 21st against the Twins, then he left for the WBC in Japan where he’s been with Ohtani and Suzuki etc.
I’m happy to report he is not injured, and I expect him to perform very well in the WBC while playing outfield.
Thanks Fever- I completely forgot about him being in the WBC.
I actually don’t mind his/her posts historically either. Seems well informed and knowledgeable and a Red Sox fan. All positives imo. Opinionated is cool with me too. I didn’t tell him/her to post less. Just addressed the aggressively over critical response directed at me as if I challenged him/her to a duel. TBH I just think we have different definitions of “prove it year”.
Sean – youre all good in my book as well. Im a very live and let live sort of folk who just enjoys talking baseball and hearing the thoughts of others, even those who try to push me to using a different standard of proof or those who have different opinions to mine like Acell or All in the Suit you wear.
Some folks here, even though its a rumors site, they want to see unimpeachable proof of something before admitting its more likely than not. Others of us see lots of smoke, and figure, thats good enough to imply some kind of fire.
Some of those other posters I reference, with their unique standards of proof, it rubs certain others wrong and they dont get along great to say the least LOL… I just try to look at anyone folks post through the lens I see a patterns of their posts taking over the years.
It’s baseball, amd, its spring training. Despite recent snow falls, cabin fever had to be breaking soon. And im glad to still be here 1 more years to see another season!
GaSox – I am THRILLED you’re still here! I really hope the Sox cut the crap and give us another memorable season, even if it’s just an ALCS appearance. It can happen, but everyone would need to be on their A-game ….. players, coaches, manager and front office.
“even those who try to push me to using a different standard of proof” – You mean the guy who always tried to silence us by saying if we don’t provide a direct quote on video then it never happened? I still say you have the patience of a saint!
Fever – you literally got a laugh out loud from me, and, yes, I do mean that exact individual who i know you don’t get along with as well as I do lol….
I still say he’s a good egg if you filter things through his particular lens.
Any baseball is good baseball is how I see it. Lord knows theres a little ‘clan’ of individuals who’ve done their best to try and make sure I didnt live to see this season, but thats about greed and if I were to pass on, she gains claim to my estate.
Until this winter, I could never imagine someone being so… evil as to call someone’s doctors and insurance companies to have their statements, bills, and medical documents redirected to a secret po box to get their health insurance cancelled and interfere with cancer treatment. And its not like im any Warren Buffet! No MASSIVE payday involved even… oh well.
Take life’s pleasures where you can, and live your best life each day youre still here.
Good quote to end a long day on. Cheers 🍻
GaSox – For the longest time he and I were cool and I hung with him, until I realized he was trolling me by quickly dismissing the logic, quotes and links I took the time to provide. That’s what trolls do, never admitting they are wrong and never giving the other person credit for what they say and provide. It’s just a massive waste of time replying to someone who has no intention of even listening. Then he started getting personal with namecalling and insults, of course that is something I don’t tolerate. He even teamed up with KD against me.
It’s not often I’m speechless, but I have no words for what your ex did. Some people just don’t have a conscious, they obviously don’t believe in the hereafter. As for the estate, I thought you divorced long ago?
I have always appreciated life’s pleasures more than most, because I am cognizant of the fact there are no guarantees in life. Tomorrow is never guaranteed for anyone, which is why I want the Sox to win NOW!
I believe I seen that happen on Law & Order
cdc – hi!
It’s even worse now with AI, can’t even trust video as evidence of anything. Tik Tok is like 90% AI now and many don’t state it.
speaking of which GA, the comments have been easier to sift through since you know didn’t pop up with a new screen name.
Fever – not yet, its still pending which means i need to at least outlive the final trial, which, is set to be by jury probably later this year.
It’d be nice to celebrate at a red sox game if the trial would go as I would expect… even those here on the board that don’t particularly care for my opinions, id like to believe they don’t actually prefer me dead LOL.
But yes, let’s hope the taste of the postseason last year has the kids hungry for more!
Acell- I never got those changing of screenname games. Writing style, comment types, they give people away anyways.
Then again, I didnt even know waaay back that it was an option, and, had to make this new account from the days when I was AtlSoxFan. So technically there’s still the old username, but, no overlap. Call it technological ignorance.
GaSox – Really sorry to hear it’s been drawn out so long. I’m guessing that was her goal all along.
I have never understood how anyone could wish death on another person, unless the other person was a convicted killer or something. I’ve always believed in karma, if you wish evil things on others it will come back to you like a boomerang. In terms of energy (positive or negative) you get what you give.
Ive embraced Asia ‘only time will tell” thoroughly these days regarding my life situation. It sums it up quite nicely
GaSox – One thing I’ve confirmed long ago, those who keep changing their handle tend to post very short messages which makes it difficult to notice any similarities in style.
Fever – the stylistic writing cues arent there, but, the off-topic diversions and the propensity to jump to rage bait topics are consistent
GaSox – Sounds like you have someone particular in mind. Sometimes I jump offtopic, usually to lighten things up with humor, hope you’re not hinting about me! LOL! There’s several here, including myself, who vent at times but I don’t think anyone does it for baiting purposes.
You’ve got me curious, any hints? ;O)

These are golden words.
I sincerely sympathize with you and wish you success in overcoming all your problems and staying on this site for a long time to come.
P.S. What you said above takes on even more meaning because, living in Ukraine, there’s no place completely safe from a missile or a martyr.
But when you’re in close proximity to the front line or 50-60 km away, that probability increases dramatically.
But people and including me in Ukraine have been living like this for fifth year now.
Fever – Im thinking about the ones who try to make everything racist and facist and all that ilk.
GaSox – Ahhhh …. got it.
I agree, Steve immediately comes to mind.
It’s been awhile since I’ve seen that stuff, maybe the comments are getting monitored more strictly? Or it could be just because it’s offseason.
Speaking of comments, I’d like to know why they switched the Comments & Likes Notifications from Red/Unread & Black/Read to the opposite. Kinda weird thing to change. LOL
Thank you Bogey.
We’re both in the same fight then, believe it or not. The threats and villians are different, but at the end of the day, they all seek to deprive us of our ability to live, and, the rights and resources necessary to survive.
For me, its cancer and someone who appears to have lost any moral compass. For you, it a well documented (in the western hemisphere anyways) senseless ambition.
A friend of mine from back in law school helped organize donations to fund these small collapsible woodstoves, if I remember the design right it was sheetmetal pieces that could be set into a simple box shape, for when the centralized steam facilities went down and was shipping flat packs of them over to your country. I’d sent 6, although, wish I couldve funded more. Id been deemed totally and permanently disabled several years prior to anything youre facing broke out. For what its worth I come from diaspora of the old polish-lithuanian commwealth on both sides, but, from the 1790-1940s there so many boundary changes and forced relocations… well, after WWII my ancestors were forced to America after being hunted by the red army for having been in the resistance under occupation. Anyways, who knows where those stoves wound up, maybe even someone you knew somewhere.
GaSox – I’m curious, and if you’d rather not talk about it I understand, how long did you know her before marrying her and what about her appealed to you? She sounds like a very evil person, and you’re a smart guy so I’m guessing you noticed warning signs at some point which is probably why you chose to not have kids? Love distorts perception for sure, it’s very common for someone in a relationship to not notice what outsiders likely notice.
It just really sickens me that at a time when you truly need spousal support, instead they are making your life far more difficult. Karma will teach her a lesson eventually, just like it did with Ted’s son.
Fever – ill be a social.l guinea pig – knew her over a year before dating, and dated dated over 8 years before marriage (6 till engagement…)
As they say, love is blind… I almost walked away around the engagement, but, was foolish. Believed in the good in people, and, believed her what she said.
Worst part of all the neglect and endangerment she put someone of a vulnerable/protected class though these days is, she’s licensed and in charge of the care and development of young children, early childhood and pre-k. I thought id seen a warm hearted and caring individual, who had nurturing in her.
I thought wrong. Not unlike some of my baseball analysis lol.
GaSox – Your experiences are quite common. I’m the same way, I’ll trust someone until they give me reason not to. We all have a tendency to remember and think about the good things, while blocking out the bad things. It’s no different than gambling, people remember the wins but not the losses (which is why they keep playing and losing).
Dealing with someone who is good at faking and pretending, yup been there. People who are charming in public, and then turn into monsters behind closed doors. Pretty much every Dateline NBC episode is about that. Nearly every time a husband or wife gets killed, the spouse ends up being involved.
Well just remember you’ll always have myself and others here to support you.
Thank you Fever. You and everyone else.
Over the course of years as they pass into decades, one person at a time you wind up isolated, intentionally.
The goal? Friend by friend, acquaintance by acquaintance any support network you have is constricted, or, partially dismantled.
No matter how highly educated, no matter how street smart or worldly you are. It can happen to you too over the years, without realizing it.
Which is why, these days, I decided to share bits of these events more publicly these days – to other victims, youre not alone. And to those who question if youre started down the path, reach out for help.
Just my 2¢… it is not a character flaw on your behalf that you didn’t anticipate someone you grew to love being evil incarnate
GaSox – So very true! I learned in my 30’s if you have good people in your life, hold onto them. Because as people age, true friends pass away or have serious issues they are dealing with or they simply don’t have the desire to interact with others anymore. And making new friends once you hit the 50’s is really hard, especially as people retire or work remotely. I’ve known multiple people who passed away and left instructions to have only a handful of people notified. No wake, no funeral, no services of any kind.
Sean – One of the best quotes, “The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist”.
Without question, evil is most effective when hidden or denied.
The most intelligent people can fall victim.
Good people have been taken advantage of, deceived and mistreated by bad people since the beginning of time. That will never change.

Believe me, your help, like that of your friend, is invaluable, even if it’s just a dollar.
You haven’t remained indifferent, even though the problem seems far away from the United States.
I can only express my gratitude to people like you who have helped and are helping Ukraine.
I’ve been in the Armed Forces of Ukraine since 2024.
Honestly, I’m mentally exhausted and want to return to my former, civilized life, It’s doubly hard when you don’t see your wife and small children for six months.
However, baseball and the Red Sox provide a distraction from the depression.
People forget how good of a hitter Casas is. Trading him away because they have Contreras for two seasons would be a huge mistake.
Joemo – thanks for the Winning Fixes Everything recommendation. The parallels with the current Sox front office is so scary. I guess Breslow read it too and decided he would follow the blueprint literally step by step
I hope you liked it!
I wonder how much is common across the league and we just notice it more because it’s the team we follow.
Im sure its more or less the same, but its staggeringly parallel
Also, it confirms my suspicion that GM/POBO parties are probably a lot less fun and alcohol driven than back in the day…..lol
Joe – I am so happy both of you read that book! I have referenced it in the past a few times because of the parts about Cora, he was really disliked back in the day. While he is more polished now, there’s still a lot of his old self in him.
Fever – something something Cora something something something lipstick on a pig….
About sum it up?
GaSox – Haha! Here’s some interesting facts about his short time in Houston:
“An executive confirmed that if the rift between Cora and Hinch had continued, a dismissal likely would have been afoot.”
Cora and Astros television color analyst Geoff Blum reportedly got into a verbal argument on the team bus returning to Houston after their game Aug. 31, 2017.
Drellich wrote that the argument happened after Blum asked Cora to turn down his music because he and “some of the broadcast crew were also trying to reach out to families and figure out which roads were open” in the midst of Hurricane Harvey. The argument continued after deboarding the bus at Minute Maid Park where Cora also “snapped and started screaming” at both Blum and Hinch in front of the team. Witnesses told Drellich it was so aggressive that it looked like it could turn into a physical altercation.
“He should have been fired a long time ago,” Hinch vented to others, according to “Winning Fixes Everything.”
Colleagues of Hinch told Drellich they “felt the trouble started the first month of the season, even back in spring training” and the Aug. 31 altercation “wasn’t the first time they actually had that kind of interaction.”
Drellich wrote that “In Cora’s short time in Houston, he had shown he could be erratic or simply immature.” The book mentions Cora drinking on the night of his altercation with Blum and Hinch.
“Cora really likes to drink,” said someone who traveled with the Astros, according to the book. “Any road trip I was on with him, or plane flight I was on with him, he was drinking a lot. Him and Craig Bjornson, CB, were basically wasted on every single flight. So much so that Cora would turn into the equivalent of like, the scary homeless person that’s talking to themself doing like drunken tai chi in place, and you’re like: ‘Oh my God, what’s wrong with that guy?’ Like, Cora would get that level drunk on basically every single trip.”
“People forget how good”..What you really have to decide with Tristan Casas, is whether you’d rather have an inconsistent, injury prone player or the Wendy’s combo meal that he’d bring back in trade. I’m really hungry right now, so I’m leaning toward the combo meal.
Inconsistent?
2023 – 129 OPS+, 24HR in 132 games.
2024 – 124 OPS+, 13 HR in 63 games (freak injury).
2025 – Another freak injury after 29 games.
In what world can you call him inconsistent? There isn’t even two full seasons of data on the kid yet. People just love to hate the kid.
No, the Red Sox love to show no faith in him. How can the fans be expected to show more faith than the team. The article says Casas is “capable of being a middle-of-the-order” hitter but the Sox seem to feel he is a not worth a roster spot. I wonder why the trade offers will be on the low end.
stymeedone
No, the Red Sox love to show no faith in him.
===================
Is that how you interpret the RS trying to extend him? “We have no faith in you, but would you like to sign a 7-year extension?”.
That’s in the past. That’s not happening currently.
Through no fault of his own Casas became the guy a lot of Red Sox fans thought was worth offering up in lopsided trades. As there is a perception that big-market fans tend to habitually do this is I think that’s where the vitriol comes from.
Of course it’s best to let ideas like bad trade proposals or the thought that a team’s 19th ranked prospect is going to be somebody just wash over you like the waves; the soothing rumble of the endless sea that is the MLBTR commentariat. To dive in and fight the multi-headed hydra that is such stupidity is as futile as Hercules going it alone. There is no Iolaus to illuminate us with his flaming torch; to cauterize the eruptive and constant flow of bad ideas. In their combative moments people lose the difference between the hydra and the sea. And then they say mean things about Tristan Casas.
MuleorAstroMule
Through no fault of his own Casas….
=================
30 Parks summed it up well. The guy is exhausting. I’m fine with folks dancing to their own drum beat. But he put me over the top when he said he was already swinging the bat. When one of the writers mentioned that he was still 9 months away, Casas told them he was swinging a bat ‘in his mind’.
That’s when I started moving from ‘maybe he’s eclectic’ to ‘maybe he’s crazy’.
The same people hating on Casas will be the same people hating on the Sox if Casas is traded and turns into an all star somewhere else.
Joemo…. It is just because the Kid is an “Oddball”…. that’s the nice way to say he is a little “bat doggie doo crazy”.
Casas reality & actual reality are at odds
His career OPS is 800. He has a career OPS+ of 118.
Maybe that’s why he thinks he’s a good hitter?
That’s good BTW, if you need to look it up.
With a four-man bench, there is no way they can carry both Yoshida and Casas. I think Casas starts the year at Worcester, especially since the Sox would gain an additional year of control if they option him for two months.
100% the right call. Marcelo Meyer also.
Gary – As much as I like both players, I agree. Better to work their way back from injury in the minors instead of with the Red Sox.
The AL East will likely be a beast of a division this year. Every game matters, even in March/April/May. Cora needs to take the games seriously and put his best team on the field as much as possible.
What if the best team includes Casas and Meyer? Is IKF really the answer? Keeping them in the minors to get an extra year of control, and deciding IKF has a job before spring trading concludes sounds more like financial maneuvering than trying to “put his best team on the field”.
This. And the problem is relying on Cora to treat those games like its Aug/Sep. Put the best lineup on the field and don’t worry about the match-ups and for gods sake let Slaten and Whitlock have the 7th and 8th instead of hoping Weissert and Kelly can get to Chapman
styme – YES! Financial maneuvering is always a factor with the Red Sox decisions. But both players are currently behind in their regular season preparation, and both players are returning from injury …. that is the main reason why having them start in AAA makes sense. There’s gonna be some rust there, especially with Casas who didn’t even have a chance to fully return from his ribcage injury and may still be hesitant to swing hard because of it.
Also Cora is obsessed with having a L/R lineup from 1-8. Look at yesterday’s, it will likely be the Opening Day lineup except sub Narvaez for Wong.
Rsox – What are your thoughts on Story batting in the 2-hole only because he’s a RHB and Cora doesn’t want Duran/Roman batting back to back? He’s got good speed but his OBP doesn’t nearly justify batting 2nd.
He was their best run producer last year so to me he should be hitting 3rd or 4th
Rsox – Agreed! Story led the team in HR. If Cora wants to stick with the L/R pattern, let Story bat cleanup and put Contreras in the 2-hole. He’s got a career .352 OBP including .380 just a year ago.
Even Durbin would be a better 2-hitter than Story.
Agreed. Though i wonder if trying Ceddane there might help his plate discipline
Rsox – His OBP did improve last year, but when he got moved around in the lineup batting 2nd and 3rd his approach didn’t change and the results weren’t good.
True. I just feel like there’s an offensive explosion in his bat waiting to happen
Rsox – I agree, similar to JBJ in his younger days. The question is how long would it last.
It’s too bad he doesn’t get on base that often, because he’s probably the second-fastest player on the team right now?
FPG
Ceddanne Rafaela would have to double his walk totals to merit a rise in the batting order. I do think he will improve this season . Cora should leave him in center where he is most valuable . If he can get his obp to .320/.330 ,it would go a long way to helping the offense.
cdc – hi !
If you leave Rafaela in center, where does KC play if he starts swinging a hot bat again? Not 1B or 2B or SS or LF or RF.
FPG
Is he the starting cf in Worcester.. ?.. Defensively he is quite a dropoff compared to Rafaela in center. Obviously a premium defensive position. KC certainly is a huge question this spring.
Gonzalez will start the year on the IL, so I think Marcelo starts on Opening Day almost by default.
Disagree regarding Mayer Gary. Let’s see what he does in spring training before sdinding him down. also I don’t buy the whole service time manupulation thing that some others here spout off about.
Nobody has any idea what the service time situation will be after next year’s negotiations. I wouldn’t let it influence the decisions on who should play and when this season.
I think it’s pretty much a given that Casas starts the season in AAA only because he’s still not cleared for full baseball activities. He’s taking fielding practice, and running in straight lines, but has not been cleared to run the bases where he would have to plant and twist on the knee. He’s probably at least a month away from being cleared to do that. So there’s virtually no chance he would be ready to start the year in Boston.
Rodgers was yet another first round bust for the Rockies under the old regime. I think we should of cut bait with him sooner. Gold glove at 2nd for 1 year but not much else. Always seemed to be hurt for extended periods of time – maybe got exposed to Bryant 19 in the clubhouse.
I would expose myself to Cesium 137 any day of the week over Bryant 19, if I was a ballplayer.
Interesting that he is credited with 22 Fielding Runs in 2022, but the same system rates him as negative in the rest of his career so he only has 12 Fielding Runs for his career.
I don’t think Abreu or Casas will be extended. At this point Casas shouldn’t even be a topic of discussion til he makes it through an entire season and is productive.
IF Abreu wins a 3rd straight Gold Glove and puts up 20+ HR’s o do not see any chance at an extension. Might be more worth it to explore an extension with Duran
Rsox – They are correct in holding off on Duran. Not just because of his advanced age, but because he has to show last year wasn’t the start of a decline.
Personally, I think Duran will eventually be gone. They are not gonna give up on KC in the OF, and Rafaela will be kept in CF unless his OPS drops below .600
“…their outfield group, which consists of Abreu, Anthony, Rafaela, Jarren Duran and Masataka Yoshida.”
Come on, man! Yoshida is not part of the outfield group, I’m not buying any of that BS. Macho Man will get some reps out there in Spring in a desperate effort by the organization to pump up his trade value as high as they possibly can to elevate the return beyond a sack of day-old donuts
That said, although he has no business in the field and is a turtle on the basepaths, Yoshida’s bat is a actually sorta underrated. He came ready to play in the postseason and actually hit really well over the last few weeks of the season once he got healthy. There’s no real fit for him on the Red Sox but he’d be great in Seattle or Colorado, teams that can use a high-contact lefty DH who smokes lasers into gaps
Because Boston has no need of a hitter “who smokes lasers into gaps.”
@stymie, That is correct, when there’s no position to play him. Four outfielders are on the club who are all better players than Yoshida, and at least one of those 4 outfielders will be in the DH slot. Which places Yoshida firmly on the bench. I don’t see Boston using hime as a super expensive pinch-hitter who doesn’t run well. I see Yoshida traded to a team that has the DH less spoken for
I find the hate on Casas exhausting. As a 23-year old he had an .856 OPS. His injury plagued follow-up season was still an .800 OPS, which would have been close to a top 10-12 OPS from 1B amongst qualified hitters last year.
Basically a bad month to start ’25 before the injury. If you have a bad month in the middle of a full season, people rarely notice. You do it to start the year and then miss the rest of it from injury, people seem to just instantly write off folks.
He’s in a tough spot because the Red Sox just don’t have PT for him right now and his trade value is probably so low it’s not worth moving him, but I would be all in on ‘buying low’ if a club thinks the Red Sox would part with him. This wasn’t some random AAAA guy that got lucky and surprised folks. He’s a first rounder that did everything he was supposed to do on his climb to the big leagues.
Lots of great stuff here nation.. my take on Casas is I would hate to give up on him this early. While he’s quirky (see Lee, Manny insert your own) he has a way of knowing the strike zone.,Works the count, and his power is obvious WHEN healthy. Crazy prediction he mirrors Pete Alonso’s production ( per at bats) these next 2 years. Hopefully in a Boston uniform. Just my 2 cents which will get you a thimble of Dunks or Braises rookie card….
Haha! “a thimble of dunks”
Good one. I agree, people forget how good Casas looked in that one season that he was somewhat healthy. Sure he’s been absolute crap the past 2 years in the very brief time when he has played, but there’s no question he has talent and upside as a power bat who works counts and walks often. What he is after these serious injuries is anyone’s guess, but I wouldn’t count him out to stage an epic comeback however it’ll probably be with another team. With Contreras and our DH logjam before Casas even re-enters the picture, I don’t see much at-bats for the big fella in Boston. He’ll probably launch 35 tanks for some other firstbase-hungry club
Casas has accepted the reality that he will start his rehab at “some affiliate”. If he rebounds then he is absolutely a positive addition to the roster and the logjam gets worse, which would be fine. It is never bad to have more good players, but I, and I think most of nation, have serious doubts about his return.
Tristan SIGN THE EXTENTION DUDE (for your own sake bruh) YOU MAY NEVER MAKE MLB ANYWHERE BRUH…THE PACE OF PROSPECTS IS LIGHTNING BRUH…You have the “injury prone” moniker already,…DON’T BE COCKY BEFORE WE UNDERSTAND WHY⁉️ A failed MLB career is easier as a multimillionaire LOL. But hey if you want to ship boxes poor at UPS some day that’s cool too. Pride is a deadly sin remember‼️💯
