Tigers, Framber Valdez Agree To Three-Year Deal

By Anthony Franco | February 4, 2026 at 9:20pm CDT

The Tigers land the offseason’s top remaining free agent, reportedly agreeing to a three-year deal with Framber Valdez that guarantees $115MM. The deal, which is pending a physical, allows the star left-hander to opt out after the second season. It contains a $20MM signing bonus and an unspecified amount of deferred money. Valdez is represented by Octagon.

Valdez reunites with A.J. Hinch and gives the Tigers a lethal 1-2 pairing at the top of the rotation. He’ll slot behind Tarik Skubal atop a starting staff that suddenly looks like one of the best in the American League. They’ll be followed by Reese Olson, Jack Flaherty and Casey Mize if everyone gets through camp healthy. That’d push KBO signee Drew Anderson into a swing role, while second-year righty Troy Melton can either pitch out of the bullpen or wait in Triple-A for a rotation spot to open.

The Skubal-Valdez pairing may only be together for one season, as the two-time defending Cy Young winner is a year away from what should be a record-setting free agent contract. Skubal and the club went to a hearing this morning that’ll determine whether he makes $19MM or $32MM for his final year under club control. The arbitrators will not reveal their decision until tomorrow, and Chris McCosky of The Detroit News confirms that neither the Tigers nor Skubal’s camp are aware yet of which way they’ll rule. The Valdez pickup is an independent decision.

It’s the kind of win-now strike for which much of the Detroit fanbase has waited all offseason. The Tigers had a fairly conservative trade deadline, and their biggest moves before tonight had been retaining Flaherty on a $20MM player option and Gleyber Torres via the $22.025MM qualifying offer. They also brought back setup man Kyle Finnegan on a two-year deal and added Anderson and closer Kenley Jansen on one-year contracts. They’d done a decent job building depth but without pushing the chips in for an impact player in what could be Skubal’s final season in the Motor City.

Valdez brings the ceiling that Detroit’s other acquisitions had lacked. He’s a two-time All-Star who has finished top 10 in Cy Young balloting in three of the past four seasons. Valdez worked his way from an unheralded amateur signee to the big leagues in 2018. He spent his first two seasons working in a swing role for an Astros club managed by Hinch. Valdez moved into the rotation permanently during the shortened 2020 campaign and has been one of the best pitchers in MLB over the last six years.

The southpaw has posted a sub-4.00 earned run average in each season since he became a full-time starter. He has been exceptionally durable as well, only twice landing on the injured list in his MLB career. He fractured his left ring finger when he was hit by a comebacker in Spring Training 2021. He was back from that injury by the end of May. His only other IL stint was a two-week absence for elbow inflammation early in ’24. He returned without issue and wound up making 29 starts between the regular season and playoffs.

Valdez is tied for 14th in starts and ranks fifth with 973 innings dating back to 2020. He has a cumulative 3.23 ERA in that time. That includes sub-3.00 showings in 2022 and ’24. Valdez was among the most consistent top-of-the-rotation starters in MLB — at least until the second half of his walk year. He posted an earned run average between 2.82 and 3.45 in each season between 2021-24. He topped 175 innings in each of the latter three years.

For the first half of last season, Valdez was on a similar pace. He took a 2.75 ERA over 121 frames into the All-Star Break. Valdez came out of the Break with two more quality starts and was sitting on a 2.62 ERA (a top 10 mark among qualifiers) as August arrived. He picked a tough time for arguably the worst couple months of his career. Valdez was blitzed for a 6.05 ERA with a dramatically reduced 17.7% strikeout rate over his final 10 starts. His sinker velocity dipped slightly, and opponents teed off on it in August and September. There’s no indication that he was tipping pitches, and it seems like the issue was mostly poor execution.

Valdez also found himself at the center of controversy during a start against the Yankees on September 2. Two pitches after giving up a grand slam to Trent Grisham, he hit catcher César Salazar in the chest with a 93 MPH sinker on a cross-up. Salazar was clearly expecting a breaking ball and didn’t have time to react to the fastball. Valdez didn’t check on the catcher in the moment. Salazar was not hurt and finished the game without issue.

The pitcher denied that the cross-up was intentional. Salazar did his best to publicly downplay the incident, saying he pressed the wrong button on his PitchCom. Even if that’s the case, the pitcher’s seeming lack of concern on the mound made for poor optics. Valdez said postgame that he had apologized to his battery mate.

Did that have any impact on his market value? It’s impossible to know from the outside, though one imagines some teams asked Valdez about the incident during the free agent process. It’s worth noting that a Detroit team managed by his former skipper is the one that eventually signed him, so it seems they don’t have any concerns about his makeup or clubhouse presence.

The late-season dip in production and Valdez’s age were probably bigger factors in his extended free agent stay. He finished the year with a 3.66 ERA across 192 innings. His 23.3% strikeout rate and 8.5% walk percentage were in line with his career marks. It’s a solid strikeout and walk profile, but his game has always been built more around ground-balls. He has a career 62% grounder rate and kept the ball on the ground at a 58.6% clip last season, the third-highest mark among pitchers with 100+ innings.

It’s not the whiff-heavy approach that someone like Dylan Cease brought to the table this offseason, though Valdez’s statistical profile isn’t that dissimilar from that of Max Fried. They’re both ground-ball specialists who sit in the mid-90s with a sinker that leads the profile. Fried commanded an eight-year, $218MM contract last winter. The biggest difference is that came in advance of his age-31 season, while Valdez turned 32 in November.

Although a one-year age gap might not seem like much, teams have been reluctant to make long-term commitments to free agent pitchers at 32. Zack Greinke, Jacob deGrom and Blake Snell are the only pitchers that age or older to command five-plus years since 2011. They’d all had at least one Cy Young on their résumés by that point. Valdez’s inconsistent finish essentially took a six-year contract off the table. MLBTR predicted a five-year, $150MM deal at the beginning of the offseason. That he remained unsigned into February made it increasingly apparent that a five-year contract wasn’t going to be out there.

On the surface, Valdez seems to have done fairly well despite signing a week before the beginning of Spring Training. The deal’s true value can’t really be known until the extent of the deferrals are reported, however. The sticker price comes with a massive $38.33MM average annual value that’d rank 10th all time. The net present value will be reduced to at least some extent by the deferred money.

Regardless of the contract breakdown, this easily goes down as Scott Harris’ boldest free agent move in his four years running baseball operations. It’s Detroit’s first nine-figure investment since the ill-fated Javier Baez deal, which was signed under former GM Al Avila. The Harris front office hadn’t gone beyond $35MM on a free agent. That was their two-year contract to re-sign Flaherty almost exactly a year ago. There are some parallels with Valdez in terms of waiting out the market to get a high-end starter for short term, but this is obviously a much more significant investment.

The Tigers ran a $188MM competitive balance tax payroll last season. They’re going to top that this year, though the extent isn’t clear. RosterResource currently estimates their CBT number around $237MM while penciling in the midpoint of the arbitration filing figures as a placeholder for Skubal. The arbitrators don’t have that luxury, meaning that CBT estimate will change by $6.5MM in one direction or another. It’s also using the base $38.33MM annual value for Valdez, which overshoots the actual number to an unknown extent until the deferral breakdown comes out.

Detroit also forfeits draft capital because Valdez rejected a qualifying offer from the Astros. They’re a revenue sharing recipient so it’s the lowest penalty, their third-highest pick in the 2026 draft. That’s currently slated to be their Competitive Balance Round B selection, which is 69th overall. The Tigers could look to trade that pick — Competitive Balance selections are the only ones that can be traded — rather than losing it as the compensatory pick. They’d then forfeit their third-round selection (#98 overall), but another team might be more willing to give up something of value for the higher draft choice and accompanying slot value that makes it worthwhile for Detroit to lose the third-rounder.

Houston never had any interest in meeting Valdez’s asking price. As luxury tax payors, they receive a compensation pick after the fourth round. That’ll land around 133rd overall. Houston traded for Mike Burrows and signed Tatsuya Imai and Ryan Weiss to backfill the rotation depth, even if they’re unlikely to replace the ceiling that Valdez brought.

The Blue Jays, Orioles and Pirates were recently linked to Valdez. ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reports that the Twins surprisingly jumped in the mix as well. He was probably a unique target for a Toronto club that already runs six deep in the rotation. Baltimore could pivot to a mid-tier starter like Zac Gallen (the last unsigned player who declined a QO), Chris Bassitt or Lucas Giolito. A mid-rotation arm is also possible for Pittsburgh. At the very least, the Bucs figure to add a fifth starter for a few million dollars. Minnesota has a solid rotation but reportedly kicked the tires on a Freddy Peralta trade as well, seemingly staying on the periphery of the market for a potential impact arm.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reported the three-year, $115MM agreement with the opt-out after year two. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was first on the presence of deferrals. Jon Heyman of The New York Post had the $20MM bonus.

But it kinda makes sense to trade him now if he wants to maximize his value and get 400+ million dollar contract. Will the tigers give that to him? Genuinely curious about that cause if not why keep him when the tigers could trade him get probably a #3 pitcher back plus a few really good prospects. Is a cy young frontrunner on a ok team worth what he’s gonna make vs the tigers payroll limitations vs what his value currently is on the trade market. Personally I’d trade him in a heartbeat for the right package but im also not a MLB GM

100% sure they are trading him now, simply because Skubal will be highly agitated that the Tigers were willing to give Framber $38 million a year for three years and yet declined to give him $31 for one.

Why wouldn’t they, depending on what they might get in return? They likely couldn’t find someone as good as Skubal but in terms of wins, they might get a package that could make an impact in 2026.

@gbs This in no way makes trading Skubal a certainty, however it does make it a bit more likely. Id say it definitely decreases chances of signing him longterm.

That said I hope he stays and they make a run this season. That is of course so long as they do not do so at the expense of turning down an insane offer.

Skubal will pitch his heart out for Tigers in 2026 if they keep him because he has $400 million on the line.

Tigers were never going to extend Skubal.

I think 51-49 they keep Skubal, hope so, because the Dodgers are in the best position to offer Sheehan, Stone, Ryan and Ferris – no other team not even Mets could offer that much for a one year rental.

Cubs could sent Hoerner or Shaw plus Taillon and Wiggins. Red Sox could send Duran Tolle and Early. But neither Red Sox nor Cubs would do that.

They missed the chance of realisticlly extending him some time ago. Probably in early 2024. When he really broke out in early 2024 the risk/reward of testing free agency was exponentially shifting in his favor.

With Skubal’s history he is going to cash in and I cant blame him. This is a player offered nothing scholarship wise at first and almost could not play in college. The shoe is now on other foot and he has earned the leverage hes created.

Why would they trade him after paying almost $40 million avv for Valdez unless they are getting an absolute haul from the Dodgers. My guess here is if Tigers win their case he is not going anywhere at least until trade deadline so either way Dodgers will get him for the stretch run to win their 3rd straight title.

I think the Dodgers say sure. Roki or Sheehan? I think they would then immediately extend Skubal to $500M or something ungodly. Like the Glasnow deal.

I hope they don’t trade Roki though.

Even for just this year, if that should be the way it works out, why can’t the Tigers have nice things? They just strengthened their rotation. They already strengthened their bullpen. No need to tear things down.

About the Skubal trade noise, as a GM, you have to balance potential return now with that at the deadline and measure them against the compensation pick for losing Skubal after a QO …assuming that still applies then, while recognizing the Tigers are plenty good enough to win the division with him.
LA could make an offer that might appeal to Detroit and they would be one of the teams that should. Only because the team that makes that deal has to have a legitimate chance to sign him to a contract/extension to “justify” the cost the Tigers would consider sufficient.

Sheehan would be the only one from the starting squad involved, No way Roki would be dangled.

In any case unless the Tigers fall out of contention, Skubal stays. The. Top three of Tarik, Framber and Jack made over 30 starts last season. That’s good consistency.

@Swing This makes trading him more realistic. However someone still needs to meet cost of acquiring him which is his talent plus the comp pick from QO and now the even higher opportunity cost from 2026. So ultimately this increases his cost in a trade which was already very high.

I think if they are rolling they will keep him and get the draft pick back from the QO. If they are not doing so well they will flip him at the deadline for a haul.

@Hank Id say its unlikely hes traded now. Prior to the deadline seems like most likely if for some reason they get off to a really bad start.

However, nobody is truly untradeable and at some point there is an offer that a team cant refuse. Thatcant refuse offer at times might be extremely unrealistic for another team to offer. In this case I dont see someone wooing Tigers to point if moving him right now.

See Coby Mayo, who finally started having some success in the bigs last September after having to keep waiting and waiting for an opportunity.

Replacing him with an ace and loading up on more talent before he leaves for free agency. Still don’t think the tigers have anything close to a serious contender with their lineup. Valdez allows them to compete while getting experience for their young bats.

The Tigers aren’t getting an ace for him. No team in win now mode is trading an ace (plus more) for Skubal. No team, that isn’t in win now mode, is going to trade anything for a 1 year rental.

The Tigers were 12 games over .500 last season and a WC team. They aren’t paying Framber what they are just to remain somewhat competitive while trading away the best pitcher in baseball.

This makes no sense at all for a contending team. If he’s traded at all it will be at the deadline because the Tigers are out of it.

Brown doesn’t have the same type of success against Seattle. The Texas offense just sucked this year. I remember when Brown tossed 6 no hit innings and then Arozerana hit a grand slam and then Bryan Abreu blew the save. It was bad.

This isn’t to hate on Pittsburgh but if I were a top end free agent I would be wary of signing there too. They haven’t taken winning seriously in a long time. In my mind I wouldn’t be sold that they are committed to winning for the duration of my contract. I think if they go for it again next year after having a winning season their fortunes on the free agent market will be different.

So it’s World Series or bust for the Tigers? I really would like to see them keep Skubal/Valdez as a 1-2 punch but I also have trouble seeing the Tigers pay Skubal $32 million. I think they should trade him to the Dodgers or Mets and they will get a River Ryan or McLean in return to maintain a 1-2 punch.

Ground ball machine behind a bad infield defense. The O’s haven’t prioritized defense at all. I hope Albernaz fixes that but we also added Polar Bear and Ward. Not exactly 2 guys who stand to make you better defensively. Holliday was awful at 2B and Gunnar’s best position is very likely 3B.

I never liked the Valdez fit. He was just the best of what was left.

Agreed about Ward and Alonso. I do think Holliday with show improvement with a year under his belt at 2nd. This off-season has been a huge disappointment IMO despite spending the $$ for Alonso. Baz is injury prone, Elfin is coming off an injury, and the bullpen is still a mess. Signing Giolito, Bassitt, or Verlander isn’t going to cut it.

We need a lot of things to go right. I really like Baz and think he’s going to pop this year.

This bullpen looks bad to me though. Elias has consistently put one together so I’ll wait and see but it was infinitely stronger on paper opening day last season.

Kittredge would’ve been behind Cano, Dominguez, and probably Soto in the pecking order to start the year. He’s unquestionably the 8th inning guy now. Akin is now your top lefty—paired w/ 35 year old journeyman Enns. Not a lot of certainty down there.

They did. One both could be true, two the Jays gave Cease 7yr which is a huge difference, three short term deals are always accompanied by a higher AAV because the length is very favorable for the team, four Valdez is definitely more consistent and a safer bet then Cease and IMO he’s just a better pitcher period. I’d definitely label the Blue Jays an overpay before Detroit, the Tigers at least know they will get solid return on investment for most if not all of the deal, Toronto can not say the same thing.

I know it’s only 2 guaranteed years potentially 3 total but interesting they are willing to give a 32 year old outsider $38M a year but low balled Skubal during extension talks while also negotiating him so hard during the arbitration process? If they tacked on 3 years for the age difference plus another year for the discrepancy in talent we get a 7yr-$265M deal, let’s lower the AAV to a round $35M being after all it is 7yr compared to 3yr, so 7yr-$245M. Wasn’t the last known offer from them after his 2024 season and something like 4yr-$100M? Just very interesting they would come in so low on their own CY Young winner then a year later give a 32yr old that high of an AAV, even if they came close to that 7yr & $35M annual deal after his first CY Young he might have considered staying.

Extension talks are old and Arb numbers are usually capped. If Tarik just gives Detroit a number on an extension to stay with the team that drafted him in the 9th round, I think they would meet it. Or come darn close. He was drafted where he was as a “favor” to Boras.

Well I definitely don’t fault the Pirates to try to compete with that price…holy overpay. I can’t even imagine what Skenes and Skubal are going to command on the market…

The Pirates and Orioles both deserve to miss the playoffs because of this. The Tigers deserve another shot.

I would say the opposite for neither team throwing that kind of money at a #2/3 starter already in his early 30s

Crazy how many people on here don’t realize Framber number can’t be used in direct correlation to what Skubal or Skenes will get. Framber is short term so his AAV is inflated, I’m sure Skenes could sign 3yr-$200M but will be get $66.67M over a 8-10yr deal? Absolutely not. That’s your difference, Skubal was already looking at well over $35M AAV long term, I don’t think Framber deal changes anything or will even be used as an example during his FA negotiations because of the context and the fact he was going to beat that number anyways, same goes for Skenes because his AAV will be even higher.

I have no idea why people assume Skubal is getting traded. With Framber they have a much improved shot at going deep in the PS. I can’t imagine that a Skubal trade would improve their chances this season. They are a better team with Skubal.

I’d assume the Tigers, after signing Framber, are going for it this season, and would not want prospects. Any team trading for Skubal would be in win now mode, and would want to trade prospects, not an MLB level asset. The Tigers trading Skubal now, just doesn’t make sense to me.

I’m pretty sure it’s more of the desire for the drama rather than anything else.

At this point I think the Tigers wreck any credibility they have with their fanbase if they signed Valdez just to trade Skubal. This looks like a desperate attempt to win it all while they still have Skubal. And yet somehow still feels like a slap in the face to Skubal.

They waited until after the arb hearing to announce the signing as to not influence the arbitrators…or Skubal and Boras.

Hopefully Detroit is loading up rather than pre-replacing Skubal in preparation of trading him.

Or, conversely, I hope Detroit is pre-replacing Skubal in preparation of trading him to the Orioles.

Skubal,Framber, Flaherty, and Mize is the 2nd best 1-4 in baseball. (ICU, Dodgers.)

The orioles failed for not offering this deal (perfect for them with the player opt out), or he didn’t want to go to Baltimore. So much for the experts’ predictions.

Nice signing. Nice rotation. Skubal was always going to FA to negotiate w/ 30 teams not 1 and he’s going to sign with the highest bidder.

The Orioles were smart not to pay this money, but they are not smart to have waited until February 4th to have figured that out. How does Elias not know weeks ago that Valdez’s asking price is too much? He may know the value of players, but his timing and foresight are horrible. Now, with two weeks before spring training, Elias is once again left to figure out who he can sign or trade for. He does this every year….

They’re going to lose the arbitration case with Skubal
They’re NOT going to trade Skubal.
They have the best pitching in the AL Central now
I would guess, barring serious injuries, they are 90% lock for the playoffs

If they can average 4.5 runs per game for the season they can win the WS

They might even get Skubal to resign, but not until after the WS.

The Tigers made their bed. I believe they are going to ride out the season with Skubal. If they have a bad season they might trade him if they can get a package worth while at the deadline.

Who is going to give them an elite package for Skubal now, knowing he is going to be a one year rental? Boras is taking him to FA. The only 2 teams that seem feasible are the Dodgers and the Mets. Even if they do make a deal I don’t see it being a windfall for the Tigers because everyone knows they have limited leverage.

Skubal won’t be traded, if at all, before the Trade Deadline now. Tigers can’t make a “vote of confidence” move like this signing only to upend it before it gets battle-tested, especially in their Division.

Having him for this season and next at least covers the Tigers of having a stud at the top of rotation for 27 if there is a season.
This should be jacks last season in Detroit, don’t know what mize deal looks like and as much as I want Skubal back I doubt that ends up being the case.
27 rotation could be Valdez, Olson, jobe, melton and ????.
Rotation and bullpen both look to be very strong. Hopefully we see progression from Keith, tork, meadows in the lineup this summer. Still looking for McGonigle to be in for opening day.

Tigers 2014 rotation: Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, David Price, Anibal Sanchez, Rick Porcello, and 6th man/spot starter Drew Smyly. The last member of that rotation was traded away in 2017 when Verlander went to Houston.

    World Series winners from 2017-2022:
    2017 – Astros – Verlander
    2018 – Red Sox – Porcello
    2019 – Nationals – Scherzer and Sanchez
    2020 – Dodgers – Price
    2021 – Braves – Smyly
    2022 – Astros – Verlander

In 2014 Robbie Ray also made his MLB debut for the Tigers. He won the Cy Young in 2021. Porcello won the Cy Young in 2016 with Boston, Scherzer with Washington in 2017, Verlander with Houston in both 2017 and 2022.

If starting pitching won championships, the Tigers would have won in 2014.
