Diamondbacks Seeking Veteran Reliever
The Diamondbacks could have two potential holes to fill in their rotation depending on what happens with Doug Davis and Brandon Webb after the season, but GM Josh Byrnes also wants to add a veteran reliever according to Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic.
"We've had our share of adversity this year, and in the bullpen it's not going to be a smooth ride for six months," Byrnes said. "We'd like to have people who can sort of understand that a bad game is going to happen but not let it happen too often and set an example that way."
Arizona's pen was supposed to be anchored by Chad Qualls, Scott Schoeneweis, Tony Pena and Jon Rauch, but Rauch and Pena were traded, Qualls battled injury, and Schoeneweis dealt with the unfortunate passing of his wife. The foursome combined for a 4.46 ERA in 163.1 IP for the D-Backs this season.
Looking the list of available free agents this offseason, could Bobby Howry or Octavio Dotel make sense? Maybe a Brandon Lyon reunion?
Odds & Ends: Wagner, Astros, Haren, Mora

- Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reconstructs the day that the Red Sox acquired Billy Wagner with help from the hard-throwing lefty himself.
- If you ask Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle, Astros owner Drayton McLane sets an open tone for the entire organization.
- Justice believes the Astros need to add an innings eater this offseason and says he expects them to shop for bargains.
- Dan Haren says he wants the D'Backs to bring Brandon Webb back next year, according to Dan Bickley of the Arizona Republic.
- Melvin Mora tells Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun that he'll never tire of thanking the Orioles, even if they don't exercise his option after the season. It would be a shock if the O's picked up Mora's $8MM option.
Odds & Ends: Redmond, Mauer, Bay
Another round of links…
- Backup catcher Mike Redmond wants to re-sign with the Twins this offseason, according to Sid Hartman of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Rookie Jose Morales has been backing Joe Mauer up lately, so the Twins have options behind the plate.
- Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press says the Twins "are expected" to try to sign Joe Mauer for about $120MM over seven years after this season. If Mauer hits free agency after next season, he'd probably see multiple offers worth more than $120MM.
- The Red Sox will have an opening in left field after the season and Curt Schilling knows how he'd attempt to fill it. He said on WEEI's The Dennis & Callahan Show that he'd rather re-sign Jason Bay than pursue Matt Holliday because Bay has proven he can play in Boston.
- ESPN.com's Keith Law reports that the D'Backs are about to sign their first European player. Andrea Pizziconi, a 17-year-old Italian, has a "promising" slider and may develop into a four-pitch pitcher.
Odds & Ends: Webb, Chapman, ChiSox, Brewers
Wednesday evening link session…
- ESPN.com's Buster Olney thinks Brandon Webb is right in not accepting a compromise deal from the Diamondbacks. He lists multiple teams that would be willing to offer the former Cy Young Award winner a lucrative one-year contract, including the Dodgers, Angels, Cubs, White Sox, Yankees and Red Sox.
- Scott Merkin of MLB.com gathered this quote from White Sox GM Kenny Williams, regarding his outlook heading into the offseason: "No. 1, I don’t like what I see on the free agent market, and what I do like, it’s going to cost you a No. 1 pick. "
- According to Jorge Arangure of ESPN.com, Aroldis Chapman's agent will be present at Yankee Stadium this weekend to take in a game against the Red Sox. Chapman, though, will remain in Andorra.
- Arangure also "tweets" that Cuban first baseman Jose Julio Ruiz has finally become a free agent. The 25-year-old hit .305/.408/.467 over 52 games in the Serie Nacional last season before suddenly defecting to the Dominican Republic.
- According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, Brewers manager Ken Macha is likely to return for a second season. GM Doug Melvin knows exactly where the blame should lie for his club's disappointing 2009 campaign, and it's not on the skipper: "It came down to starting pitching," Melvin said Tuesday. "Overall, we lacked depth. When we had to reach down … (it wasn't there)."
D’Backs To Release Eric Byrnes This Winter?
Scott Bordow of the East Valley Tribune suspects that the Diamondbacks will consider cutting ties with Eric Byrnes this offseason and would be willing to eat the final year of his three-year, $30MM contract.
Arizona's outfield is set for 2010, and it doesn't include the injury-plagued Byrnes. Conor Jackson will start in left field, Chris Young is expected to start in center and Justin Upton will play right. Gerardo Parra, after a fine rookie campaign in 2009, will operate as the fourth outfielder but should find regular playing time.
D'Backs GM Josh Byrnes will certainly try to work out a trade before simply releasing the 33-year-old outfielder, who has played just 76 games this year due to a fractured hand, but it might be hard to find a team willing to take on his salary. "The Diamondbacks will take a lot of grief if they release Byrnes," concludes Bordow. "But it would be the right thing to do."

RP – Juan Gutierrez – $401K
RP – Esmerling Vasquez – $400K
RP – Clay Zavada – $400K
RP – Leo Rosales – $403K
RP – Blaine Boyer – $433K+
RP – Daniel Schlereth – $400K
Other commitments: Chad Tracy – $1MM buyout, Jon Garland – $1MM or $2.5MM
Non-tender candidates: Conor Jackson, Daniel Cabrera
D'Backs Managing General Partner Ken Kendrick told Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic in June that the Major League payroll was around $76MM, and it will be "the same or more" in 2010. I have their '10 commitments at $52.5MM or $54MM, depending on what happens with Jon Garland. Then we have to add arbitration raises for Montero, Drew, Ojeda, Qualls, and Boyer, which Piecoro feels will cost an additional $5.5MM. In total the D'Backs have about $60MM committed for next year at the high end, operating under the assumptions that Reynolds falls short of Super Two status and Webb and Jackson are retained. The Diamondbacks would have at least $16MM to work with this winter.
If GM Josh Byrnes prefers to shake things up, he could decline Webb's option, non-tender Jackson, and trade Snyder. Those moves could slice $13.65MM from the '10 payroll, though it's a stretch to think Byrnes could find a team to take on Snyder's entire contract. Snyder's trade value is at a low point, so keeping him for now makes sense. I think Byrnes will ultimately exercise Webb's option. The December decision on Jackson will depend on his performance on the instructional league and in winter ball. Jackson is trying to come back from a nasty bout with Valley Fever, and if they keep him the D'Backs can attempt to cut his salary the maximum 20%.
The D'Backs are set with Drew and Reynolds on the left side of the infield, while Allen and Roberts are unproven on the right. Roberts has seen lefties a disproportionate 37% of the time, a big contributor to his strong rookie season. Allen showed huge power in his Triple A Reno stint, but hasn't done much otherwise this year. Theoretically a healthy Jackson could move back to first base and the D'Backs could use Parra and/or Byrnes in left field. If Jackson is non-tendered, it would be reasonable for the D'Backs to use that money to sign a left fielder.
Montero, Reynolds, and Upton had strong years, and Drew is a solid bat at short. With question marks at four other positions, look for the D'Backs to consider importing at least one position player (Piecoro guesses it'll be a second baseman).
Even if Webb is retained, Byrnes will need to sign a starting pitcher. Byrnes doesn't necessarily need to go cheap here; he could fit $15MM for John Lackey into the budget. But realistically he'll look to the second tier, with names like Randy Wolf, Joel Pineiro, and Carl Pavano. That'd leave a few million for a veteran reliever.
Byrnes' moves could mirror last offseason's (Scott Schoeneweis acquired and Felipe Lopez signed to a $3.5MM deal in December, Jon Garland signed for $7.25MM in January, and Tom Gordon signed for $500K in February). We seem to say this annually about the Diamondbacks, but with the right free agents and few more young hitters maturing, they can compete.
Webb Not Interested In Restructured Deal
We've seen speculation that the Diamondbacks could decline Brandon Webb's $8.5MM club option in hopes of negotiating a more favorable deal, as risky as that sounds. Given the $2MM buyout, it's a net of just $6.5MM for the D'Backs in 2010.
Bob McManaman of the Arizona Republic spoke to Webb today, and the pitcher said he is not interested in a restructured deal. If the Diamondbacks decline the option, Webb will hit the open market. Talking to Scott Bordow of the East Valley Tribune, Webb referenced John Smoltz's $5.5MM guarantee, noting that "he's got a little bit of age on me and my surgery wasn't even close to his."
Webb's preference is still for the D'Backs to pick up the 2010 option. Despite what's been written I'd be surprised if they don't.
D’Backs Rumors: Snyder, Webb
Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic has the latest on the D'Backs' offseason plans…
- Chris Snyder will undergo back surgery tomorrow and the operation figures to hurt the catcher's trade value. The D'Backs have relied on Miguel Montero this year, so they don't need Snyder as much as they expected to when they signed him to a $14.25MM deal last offseason. The contract and Snyder's .200/.333/.352 line would likely have prevented the club from trading the 28-year-old even if he wasn't having surgery tomorrow.
- The D'Backs tend to avoid incentive-based contracts, but they may consider one if they approach Brandon Webb about restructuring his current deal. When Tim interviewed Josh Byrnes earlier in the year, the D'Backs GM said he prefers to avoid bonuses because he likes having a stable payroll and wants to avoid clubhouse distractions.
Odds & Ends: Webb, Griffey, Hoffman

Odds & Ends: Reynolds, Gammons, Orioles
Some late night links after Jake Peavy allowed three runs in five innings in his first start for the White Sox…
- Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic notes that Mark Reynolds is likely to fall short of qualifying as a Super Two, meaning he'll have to wait until after 2010 to become arbitration eligible. He also says that it "does not appear there have been any discussions about a long-term deal with Reynolds, but the club does not seem averse to the idea of an extension."
- ESPN's Peter Gammons writes about how great Victor Martinez has been for the Red Sox since being acquired at the trade deadline. He also praises Casey Kotchman, but I think I'd rather have Adam LaRoche, who has a 1.053 OPS since the trade.
- Orioles Manager Dave Trembley indicated that the team needs someone to hit behind Nick Markakis until some younger players like Matt Wieters and Adam Jones are ready to do it, according to MASNsports.com's Roch Kubatko.
