Joey Votto’s 2011 Salary

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 23, 2010 at 6:51pm CDT

The Reds may or may not offer Joey Votto an extension this winter, but he's setting himself up for a massive raise, even if Cincinnati doesn't offer a long-term deal. Votto leads the National League in batting average, on base percentage and slugging percentage and is second in RBI and third in home runs. He's just three homers and three RBI away from leading the league in every triple crown category and has a 1.023 OPS since the All-Star break, so he's showing no signs of slowing down.

The Reds have enjoyed three-plus seasons of dirt-cheap production from their first baseman, but that's about to change. Votto goes to arbitration for the first time this winter and he's comparable to a group of first basemen that earned significant raises in their first seasons of arbitration.

To determine how much Votto can expect to earn in 2011, let's compare his numbers to the ones some current first basemen had entering their first seasons of arbitration. Here are the stats Albert Pujols, Miguel Cabrera, Justin Morneau, Ryan Howard, Prince Fielder and Mark Teixeira had leading up to their first arbitration seasons, plus the salaries they ultimately agreed to.

  Reds Votto

Please note that Fielder, Teixeira, and Pujols signed multi-year deals that included their first seasons of arbitration. 'Age' shows the player's age at the time of the signing, not his current age.

Votto’s rate stats are comparable to Cabrera’s, but Votto has played significantly fewer games than Cabrera had. Fellow-Canadian Justin Morneau had similar homer and RBI totals to the ones Votto has now, but worse rate stats.

Howard and Morneau, both super twos, parlayed MVP seasons into substantial raises, but Morneau settled for a modest $4.5MM salary, whereas Howard signed for a record-setting $10MM. Votto, an MVP candidate this season, could ask for something in between. It would not be unreasonable for him to seek a $7MM salary through arbitration this offseason if he keeps hitting like this.

Clayton Kershaw: Extension Candidate

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 23, 2010 at 4:55pm CDT

It's becoming common for teams to sign promising young pitchers to extensions, but the Dodgers haven't locked up their young arms with the same frequency as other clubs. Instead, they have generally obtained starting pitchers through free agency this decade (Darren Dreifort, Andy Ashby, Derek Lowe, Randy Wolf, Vicente Padilla and Hiroki Kuroda are some noteworthy pitchers to sign with the Dodgers as free agents since 2000).

It's not easy to develop pitching, and the Dodgers haven't had an overwhelming amount of young starters worth extending, but that's no longer the case. Chad Billingsley and Clayton Kershaw have become two of the team's best pitchers, so they are candidates for extensions this winter.

The last pitcher to sign an extension was a young left-hander, like Kershaw. It's possible that the Ricky Romero extension – a deal that was based on the ones Jon Lester and Yovani Gallardo signed – becomes a model for a contract between Kershaw and the Dodgers. Here's how Kershaw's current numbers compare to the ones those three starters had when they signed their respective deals:

Clayton Kershaw

The pitchers are comparable, but Kershaw stands out. He is younger than the other three pitchers were when they signed extensions, he has a lower ERA, more starts and innings, a better strikeout rate and fewer hits allowed per inning pitched. Kershaw's walk rate is the one blemish on his record, but he's walking fewer batters than ever this year (3.9 BB/9).

Romero, Lester and Gallardo were heading into their final pre-arbitration seasons when they signed their respective deals, all of which were worth $30MM or so. This winter, Kershaw will also be entering his final pre-arbitration season, but he will be in position to seek more guaranteed money. After all, he has pitched more innings, posted a better ERA and struck out more batters at a younger age. The Dodgers would do well to lock Kershaw up to a five-year $30MM extension, but Kershaw's representatives would have reason to ask for more.

Manny Ramirez Likely To Hit Waivers This Week

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 23, 2010 at 3:25pm CDT

There’s a good chance Manny Ramirez will be placed on waivers early this week and traded later this month, according to ESPN.com’s Buster Olney. Ramirez, who was not placed on waivers today, according to ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark, would have to approve any trade or waiver claim because he has a full no-trade clause.

About three quarters of Ramirez’s salary is deferred, so he makes just $1.1MM between now and the end of the season despite his hefty $20MM salary. Ramirez earns the remaining $3.4MM in deferred payments, which would presumably make his salary easier to absorb.

The Dodgers are now 8.0 games out of a playoff spot, so they would likely be open to trading Ramirez, who recently returned from the disabled list. The Rays, White Sox and Rangers are among the teams that could have interest in the slugger, though all National League teams would have to let Ramirez through waivers for an American League team to have a shot at him.

Cody Ross Awarded To Giants

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 22, 2010 at 3:13pm CDT

SUNDAY, 3:13pm: Ross was awarded to the Giants, according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro. Ross will join recently-acquired outfielders Pat Burrell and Jose Guillen in what's become a very crowded outfield scenario in San Francisco. In addition to that trio, the Giants also have Aaron Rowand, Andres Torres, and Nate Schierholtz.

Ross will be arbitration-eligible for the final time following this season, should the Giants choose to tender him a contract.  The outfielder earned $4.45MM for 2010 and therefore San Francisco will owe the slugger a shade over $1MM for the remainder of the season.

It's likely that the Giants put the claim on Ross in order to block division rival San Diego.  The Padres are in need help in center field and possibly could have used Ross as he started 70 games at the position in 2010.

FRIDAY, 2:23pm: The Giants claimed Ross, sources tell Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. That's unconfirmed, but the Braves and Phillies did not win the claim. The Marlins, who aren't sure whether the claiming team actually wants to strike a deal or just wants to prevent a rival from making one, have until Monday to agree on a trade or pull Ross off of waivers.

1:47pm: An unknown National League team claimed Cody Ross on waivers today, according to Jayson Stark of ESPN.com (on Twitter). Stark reports that the Marlins are expected to explore a deal with the claiming team.

The Phillies and Giants, two teams thought to be potential suitors for Brad Hawpe, could have interest in Ross as well. The Padres just lost Tony Gwynn Jr. to the disabled list, so they would presumably have interest in Ross. The 29-year-old is under team control for 2011 as an arbitration-eligible player, so even a non-contender could have claimed him.

Jon Jay has been playing well in St. Louis, and Randy Winn has been serviceable, so the Cardinals don't appear like a natural fit for Ross. The same goes for the Rockies, Dodgers, Reds and Braves.

Ross has a strong 4.9 UZR/150 in just over 1,000 innings in the outfield this year, but his offense hasn't been as good as his defense. His .261/.312/.390 line doesn't compare to the numbers he posted in 2007-09. About $1.1MM remains on Ross's $4.45MM salary.

Adam LaRoche Not Drawing Much Interest

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 20, 2010 at 4:24pm CDT

The Diamondbacks can trade Adam LaRoche to any team now that he has cleared waivers, but he isn't drawing much interest, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). That's a little surprising given the first baseman's 21 homers and .273/.340/.493 line, but it won't concern the D'Backs.

As Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com reported yesterday, the sides have had preliminary discussions about an extension. There's mutual interest in working out a deal, though talks have been general so far. Rosenthal adds that the D'Backs would prefer to sign LaRoche to a favorable extension and move prospect Brandon Allen to left field (Twitter link).

LaRoche makes about $1.1MM between now and the end of the season and there's a $1.5MM buyout on the team's 2011 option to take into consideration, too.

Poll: Brad Hawpe’s Next Team

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 20, 2010 at 3:54pm CDT

Brad Hawpe has played his last game in a Rockies uniform, but his major league career isn't over. The Giants, Rangers, Rays, Red Sox, White Sox and Phillies are some of the teams that could have interest in Hawpe. The Padres recently lost an outfielder to the disabled list, so let's not rule them out completely.

The Rockies could technically trade Hawpe, since they designated him for assignment, but Troy Renck of the Denver Post suggests they would not prevent Hawpe from signing a deal. With that in mind, it's time to make some educated guesses:

Which team will Brad Hawpe play for next?

Odds & Ends: Inge, Damon, Draft, Lilly, Manny

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 20, 2010 at 1:10pm CDT

One year ago today, the Mets released Livan Hernandez. So far in 2010, Hernandez has a 3.06 ERA and ranks in the top ten in the NL in innings pitched and complete games. He doesn't strike anybody out, but his walk rate is low and he's headed for the 200 IP plateau once again. Here are some links for Friday as we contemplate Hernandez's surprising season…

  • Brandon Inge and Johnny Damon are now on waivers, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney (on Twitter). We should soon know if the two Tigers clear.
  • Baseball America presents the compensation picks in the 2011 draft and total bonuses from 2008-10. The Nationals, Pirates and Blue Jays have have spent the most on bonuses.
  • This doesn't count towards their draft spending, but the Pirates signed Colombian shortstop Dilson Herrera for $220K, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
  • ESPN.com's Buster Olney doubts that Ted Lilly would clear waivers this month. The left-hander, who tossed a two-hitter last night, would likely be claimed by a contending team.
  • Jamey Newberg lists the hurdles the Rangers will face if they want to acquire Manny Ramirez from the Dodgers this month. As Newberg explains on MLB.com, a lot would have to fall into place for the Rangers to acquire the slugger.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post points out that the Mets' decision to let Darren O'Day go at the beginning of last year has not worked out for New York.
  • Mark Kiszla of the the Denver Post says Todd Helton “needs to hang up his No. 17 Colorado uniform and retire.”
  • Joe Beimel, a free agent after the season, would like to keep playing in Colorado, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post (on Twitter).

The Rockies’ 2011 Rotation

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 20, 2010 at 12:26pm CDT

Ubaldo Jimenez, Jhoulys Chacin and Jason Hammel will probably be in the Rockies' 2011 rotation, but the remaining two spots are considerably harder to predict. Jimenez is a Cy Young candidate, Chacin is striking out a batter per inning as a 22-year-old and Hammel is putting together a second consecutive solid season. The Rockies could theoretically fill the rest of the rotation from within, but that's not necessarily what they'll do. Here are their options:

Esmil Rogers and Aaron Cook are under team control for 2011, so Jim Tracy could just slot the pair into the rotation. It's not that simple, though. Rogers recently joined the rotation after pitching out of the bullpen for much of the season and Cook, who is under contract for 2011 at $9.25MM, could become trade bait. The Rockies entertained the idea of trading him this summer, so there's no guarantee that he starts next year in Colorado.

This could be the final season in Denver for two of the team's most recognizable left-handers. The Rockies have a $7MM option for Jeff Francis but they may decide that's too much to commit to a pitcher who missed all of last year and much of this year with injuries. Francis is on the DL with left shoulder soreness now, but he has struck out three times as many batter as he has walked, so the 29-year-old can pitch when healthy.

Another left-hander, Jorge de la Rosa, is sure to hit free agency after the season. He missed time early in the year with a finger injury, but has posted solid numbers since. The 29-year-old has a 4.74 ERA with 8.7 K/9 and 4.9 BB/9 in 68.1 innings, which should be enough to attract serious interest in the offseason.

The Rockies probably can't count on Greg Reynolds and Christian Friedrich, a pair of prospects who don't appear to be big-league ready. Many expected Reynolds, the second overall selection in the 2006 draft, to be an option by now, but he is still pitching at AA and his numbers are just OK, so the Rockies certainly aren't about to hand him a rotation spot.

Friedrich, 23, entered the season as the 33rd-best prospect in the game, according to Baseball America. He has been hittable at AA and his 8.0 K/9 strikeout rate is impressive, but not as eye-catching as the career 12.0 K/9 rate he had going into the season. Meanwhile, 2009 first rounder Tyler Matzek is striking opponents out, but he has posted 6.2 BB/9 batter so far and certainly needs seasoning.

Letting Francis and De La Rosa walk would leave the Rockies with a thin rotation, especially if they trade Cook. Their best pitching prospects are either adjusting to the upper minors or still in the lower minors, so it's hard to imagine immediate help coming from the system.

Troy Renck of the Denver Post suggested on Twitter that the Rockies will add a veteran pitcher to next year's rotation. It does seem likely that the Rockies will pursue one or more starting pitchers this offseason, whether that means bringing back Francis, bidding on De La Rosa, or pursuing a different free agent starter.

Pirates To Spend, But Not On Top Free Agents

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 20, 2010 at 10:02am CDT

Team president Frank Coonelly told 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh that the Pirates will "significantly increase" their payroll in 2011, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. They won't double the $44MM payroll they have in 2010, but expect the Pirates to spend a significant amount.

They may boost payroll, but if the Pirates were on Cliff Lee's list of possible 2011 teams, he can probably cross them off. The Pirates still don't plan to build through major free agent acquisitions, according to Kovacevic.

"We're not going to add a No. 1 starter in free agency," GM Neal Huntington said. "We're not going to add a true, major-league power bat in free agency."

Huntington has other ideas and if this week is any indication, the Pirates are putting them in place. The Pirates signed Mexican pitching prospect Luis Heredia and locked up top draft picks Jameson Taillon and Stetson Allie to multi-million dollar bonuses. As Taillon explained to Chuck Finder of the Post-Gazette, "that'd be a pretty mean trio right there."

Now, the Pirates are one loss away from clinching their 18th consecutive losing season and those three right-handers aren't ready to turn the team around yet. We should expect the Pirates to be active in free agency this offseason. Earlier this summer, Coonelly told Kovacevic that he plans to be "aggressive," so the team could look to buy low on free agents, add non-tenders or make other moderate forays into the free agent market.

Team And Transaction-Only Feeds

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 20, 2010 at 10:00am CDT

If you'd like to filter MLBTR's information by team or limit it to transactions only, we've got you covered.

In the navigation bar, check out the Feeds By Team dropdown.  Clicking on the name of a team returns all the posts that reference that club.  For example, this page displays only posts with Braves-related rumors.  The newest will always be on top.

Next to the word "Braves" you'll see an RSS button and a Twitter button.  The RSS button leads here, to the URL you'd put into your RSS reader to receive only our Braves rumors.  The Twitter button takes you to @mlbtrbraves, which shows all posts involving the team.  The MLBTR team Twitter pages are also a place to quickly receive info from team press releases, even if that info is not used on the main site.

If you'd prefer to monitor only actual transactions, we've got several options.  Our Transactions page shows only posts marked as transactions, such as signings, trades, DFAs, and releases.  You can also get this same info on Twitter and RSS.
