Michael Pineda To Undergo Labrum Operation

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | April 25, 2012 at 4:05pm CDT

Michael Pineda has a tear in his right labrum and will undergo arthroscopic surgery next Tuesday, according to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News (Twitter link). The 23-year-old will likely miss a full year, MLB.com's Bryan Hoch tweets. The Yankees acquired Pineda in an offseason trade that sent their top hitting prospect to the Mariners, but the right-hander has yet to pitch his first inning in pinstripes.

On paper the Yankees have a relatively deep rotation even without Pineda. Andy Pettitte continues working his way back to the Major Leagues, where he’s expected to join C.C. Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda, Ivan Nova, Phil Hughes and Freddy Garcia.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports examined the Pineda-Jesus Montero trade earlier today (before this afternoon's news), declaring the Mariners the early winners of the swap. Yankees GM Brian Cashman says Pineda was healthy when the Yankees acquired him in January, Hoch tweets. Pineda, a rookie in 2011, won't be arbitration eligible until the 2013-14 offseason.

Offseason In Review: New York Yankees

By Tim Dierkes | April 25, 2012 at 10:07am CDT

The Yankees restructured their rotation with trades, free agent signings and an extension this past offseason.

Major League Signings

  • C.C. Sabathia, SP: five years, $122MM.  $25MM vesting option for 2017 with a $5MM buyout.
  • Robinson Cano, 2B: one year, $14MM.  Club option exercised.
  • Nick Swisher, RF: one year, $10.25MM.  Club option exercised.
  • Hiroki Kuroda, SP: one year, $10MM.
  • Freddy Garcia, SP: one year, $4MM.
  • Andruw Jones, OF: one year, $2MM.
  • Raul Ibanez, DH: one year, $1.1MM.
  • Eric Chavez, 3B: one year, $900K.
  • David Aardsma, RP: one year, $500K.  Includes $500K+ club option for 2013.
  • Total spend: $164.75MM

Notable Minor League Signings

  • Andy Pettitte, Russell Branyan, Bill Hall, Dewayne Wise, Mike O'Connor, Jayson Nix, Manny Delcarmen, Clay Rapada

Trades and Claims

  • Acquired SP Michael Pineda and SP Jose Campos from Mariners for C/DH Jesus Montero and SP Hector Noesi.
  • Acquired LF Exicardo Cayones and RP Diego Moreno from Pirates for SP A.J. Burnett and $20MM.
  • Acquired RP Cesar Cabral from Royals for cash; Royals had claimed Cabral in Rule 5 draft.
  • Claimed SP Brad Meyers from Nationals in Rule 5 draft.
  • Claimed C Craig Tatum off waivers from Diamondbacks.

Notable Losses

  • Jesus Montero, Hector Noesi, A.J. Burnett, Bartolo Colon, Jorge Posada, Luis Ayala

Even before November began, longtime Yankees GM Brian Cashman addressed his biggest offseason concern, signing Sabathia to a five-year extension hours before the pitcher was expected to opt out of his remaining four years and $92MM.  It's really a six-year, $142MM extension, with protection for the Yankees if the big lefty has a significant shoulder injury in 2016.  The guaranteed portion of Sabathia's new deal is a record average annual value for a pitcher, but I still think he would have found a bigger overall guarantee on the open market, and therefore, the Yankees signed him at a discount.

Cashman neared a deal to re-sign Garcia in late November.  After posting a 3.62 ERA in 146 2/3 innings, Garcia may have had better offers than one year and $4MM, but he preferred to stay.  At the time, he wasn't aware how far he'd be pushed down the team's rotation depth chart.  Even with Sabathia and Garcia in the fold, the Yankees still hadn't matched their 2011 rotation, as Bartolo Colon was a free agent at the time.  The team's starting five projected to round out with Ivan Nova, A.J. Burnett, and Phil Hughes.  The Yankees' rotation still didn't seem much improved, but Cashman changed that drastically with a pair of moves on a late January day.

The Yankees first made a bold trade, acquiring Pineda and Campos from the Mariners for Montero and Noesi.  The Pineda-Montero component represented the type of old-fashioned need-for-need swap of young MLB-ready players we rarely see.  If Pineda stays relatively healthy and settles in toward the front end of the Yankees' rotation for the next five years, Montero will have to become an elite designated hitter to match that value.  Campos has more upside than Noesi, so it seems Cashman convinced Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik that Seattle needed to even out the deal.

On the same day, the Yankees secured Kuroda to a one-year free agent deal at a lower salary than he'd been earning with the Dodgers.  Kuroda had a consistently excellent four-year run with the Dodgers, though at age 37, there's plenty of uncertainty as he takes on the American League for the first time.  In trading for Pineda and waiting for a deal with Kuroda, Cashman chose to pass on $80MM+ commitments to available starters such as Yu Darvish and C.J. Wilson.

With a sudden overload of fifth starter candidates, Cashman set out to unload as much of Burnett's $33MM as possible.  The Pirates were willing to take on $13MM of the bill.  After the deal, the Yanks still had a formidable fifth starter battle between Hughes and Garcia.  Cashman, however, could not resist the allure of further boosting his depth with an essentially risk-free $2.5MM minor league deal with the unretired Pettitte.  Pettitte's return after sitting out all of 2011 is a double-edged sword: he has rust to shake off, but the 39-year-old is surely well-rested.  With seven starters for five spots, there's always the chance someone will be unhappy.  But I wouldn't trade Garcia or Hughes now because of Pettitte; the team will need all seven starters to get through the season.

On the position player side, the Yankees entered the offseason with everything locked down aside from designated hitter and bench roles.  Jones and Chavez were retained affordably for the latter, while Ibanez gets a shot at the DH job.  The minimal commitment to Ibanez will give Cashman the flexibility to seek a midseason upgrade if necessary.  Cashman's best minor move may have been the dirt-cheap Aardsma signing.  The hard-throwing righty can be retained for just above the league minimum in 2013, and could provide a second-half boost in 2012 after he recovers from Tommy John surgery.  After dislocating his ankle on a trampoline during Spring Training, Joba Chamberlain seems unlikely to provide an expected second half bullpen bonus.

Perhaps we shouldn't go overboard crediting Cashman for Sabathia and Pettitte — most GMs would make those moves given the opportunity.  But Cashman did show restraint against dangerous free agent contracts, instead swinging an old-fashioned baseball trade for Pineda.  With a revamped rotation and a returning strong offense, the Yankees are a World Series favorite for many.

Please note that this post was originally written at the end of Spring Training along with the rest of MLBTR’s Offseason in Review series.  The post was written before it became clear that Michael Pineda’s dealing with shoulder issues.

Sherman On Cardinals, Mets, Hughes

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | April 25, 2012 at 8:25am CDT

The Cardinals are defending their World Series title without Albert Pujols, Chris Carpenter, Tony La Russa and Dave Duncan, but they’re off to an 11-7 start nonetheless. One general manager recently went out of his way to note that “the Cardinals are a good organization” in a conversation with Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Here’s more from Sherman, starting in St. Louis:

  • Cardinals GM John Mozeliak says successful organizations can’t rely on one particular person. “To have sustained success, it is about being deep in all areas,” Mozeliak told Sherman. “So you are not reliant on any one person or one area of strength.”
  • Sherman wonders if the Mets might be able to spend on a long-term extension for David Wright since they didn’t re-sign Jose Reyes and the contracts of Johan Santana and Jason Bay will expire following the 2013 season (the Mets hold club options for 2014). The Mets have ignored overall organizational depth for too long, Sherman writes.
  • When asked about Phil Hughes’ slow start, Yankees GM Brian Cashman pointed out that pitchers such as Tim Lincecum, Adam Wainwright and Jon Lester have also struggled early on. “Based on the list, [Hughes] is in pretty good company,” Cashman said. “I think his stuff has been better than the results.” Cashman doesn’t sound interested in demoting the right-hander to the minors or moving him to the bullpen.

AL East Notes: Byrd, Bowden, Hall, Valentine, Pettitte

By Zachary Links | April 22, 2012 at 10:28pm CDT

In lieu of their game tonight, here's a look at items on the Yankees and Red Sox..

  • With the Cubs in rebuilding mode, Marlon Byrd expected to be traded but was surprised by the timing, writes Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe.
  • Former Red Sox pitching prospect Michael Bowden might be able to find his groove with the Cubs, writes Brian MacPherson of The Providence Journal.  Bowden was sent to Chicago as part of the Byrd deal and should finally be given the chance to pitch consistently at the major league level.
  • Veteran Bill Hall told Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports that teams assume that he will not play in Triple A because he elected free agency after failing to make the Yankees’ Opening Day roster.  In actuality, the utility man says that he opted out because of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's strange schedule in 2012.  Because of ballpark renovations, they will be playing "home" games in six different cities this season.  The 32-year-old says that he's willing to play in the minors and get started right away.
  • Buster Olney of ESPN.com (Insider sub. req'd) writes that manager Bobby Valentine is not to blame for the Red Sox's poor start.  Olney expects the club to comb the trade market early and wouldn't be surprised to see pitcher Aaron Cook called up to the varsity squad prior to his opt-out date.
  • Meanwhile, Valentine is rather critical of his own performance, writes Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe.
  • Andy Pettitte's comeback quickly went from an interesting story to a necessity for the Yankees, opines Mike Bauman of MLB.com.

Quick Hits: Red Sox, Angels, Garcia

By Dan Mennella | April 21, 2012 at 10:13pm CDT

A few odds and ends as a rather eventful Saturday in MLB winds down …

  • Red Sox GM Ben Cherington offered embattled manager Bobby Valentine a vote of confidence following this afternoon's disheartening loss. Cherington told reporters, such as CBSSports.com's Danny Knobler, that he's "very satisfied" with Valentine's performance, noting that the skipper is doing the best he can with the current roster (Twitter link).
  • To that end, Cherington did allow that the team's sluggish 4-10 record "does increase the urgency" to find solutions for a battered pitching staff, tweets Alex Speier of WEEI.com.
  • The money saved in the acquisition of Marlon Byrd will not affect the Red Sox's luxury-tax calculation, according to Speier, a loophole MLB recently closed (Twitter links).
  • Touted Angels infield prospect Jean Segura's future with the club may be in question now that the Halos have locked up shortstop Erick Aybar and second baseman Howie Kendrick to long-term contracts, writes Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com.
  • The Halos have not fared particularly well in signing relievers to multiyear contracts of late, writes Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times, a trend that GM Jerry Dipoto is trying to rectify by piecing together a cheap but effective bullpen of undervalued types. The Angels' list of relief flops includes the likes of Brian Fuentes, Justin Speier and Fernando Rodney.
  • Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he still has faith in Freddy Garcia when asked whether the right-hander was "running out of time," according to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News. Garcia has gotten off to a poor start, including an ugly outing today, and is a candidate to be moved (either to the bullpen or perhaps elsewhere) when Andy Pettitte is called up from the minors.

No More Personal Service Deals & Milestone Bonuses

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | April 20, 2012 at 11:13am CDT

Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association have agreed to put an end to personal service deals and milestone bonus clauses, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports. Existing contracts with these deals or bonuses won’t be affected by the changes, which were agreed to this month.

Albert Pujols and Ryan Zimmerman recently signed long-term contracts which include personal services provisions and Alex Rodriguez has milestone bonuses associated with his contract. However, MLB and the union say these bonuses violate baseball’s collective bargaining agreement. The sides have agreed that the CBA doesn’t allow players to agree to deals that include obligations beyond their playing careers.

MLB is trying to prevent teams from finding loopholes that enable them to evade the luxury tax, Stark reports. Personal service deals and milestone bonuses aren’t considered guaranteed money and therefore don’t count against the luxury tax.

AL East Notes: Nunez, Valentine, Hutchison

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | April 20, 2012 at 8:48am CDT

Believe it or not, Rays left-hander Matt Moore has never started a game at Tropicana Field. The 22-year-old left-hander will take the mound at home against the Twins tonight for his first Tampa Bay start. Here are today's AL East links…

  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post suggests the Yankees should use Eduardo Nunez as their primary left fielder while Brett Gardner's on the disabled list. Nunez could be part of the Yankees' future, while veterans like Andruw Jones and Raul Ibanez won't be, Sherman argues.
  • It's too early to bet against Boston manager Bobby Valentine, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports writes. Some rival executives say Red Sox president Larry Lucchino tried to regain power by hiring Valentine, according to Rosenthal.
  • Ben Badler of Baseball America introduces readers to right-hander Drew Hutchison, who will make his MLB debut for the Blue Jays tomorrow. The 21-year-old could use some more minor league seasoning, but he's quite polished for his age and could fit in as a back-of-the-rotation starter not unlike Henderson Alvarez. The Blue Jays decided to rely on internal starting pitching options this offseason instead of completing trades or free agent signings.

Yankees Sign Nelson Figueroa

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | April 19, 2012 at 11:19am CDT

The Yankees have signed right-hander Nelson Figueroa to a minor league deal, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweets. Mike Silva first reported that the Yankees had a deal with ACES client.

The Blue Jays signed the 37-year-old to a minor league deal in January, but appear to have released him since. Figueroa started the 2011 season in Houston's rotation, but the Astros released him in August after he posted an 8.69 ERA with 5.3 K/9 and 5.0 BB/9 in 29 innings. He spent most of the season at Triple-A, where he posted a 6.05 ERA with 6.0 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 99 2/3 innings.

Quick Hits: Lannan, Martin, Nationals, Orioles

By Mike Axisa | April 18, 2012 at 10:46pm CDT

Giants closer Brian Wilson will undergo his second Tommy John surgery tomorrow. Over the weekend we heard that his season was over and that another elbow procedure was likely. Make sure you follow @CloserNews on Twitter for all your fantasy bullpen needs. Meanwhile, here's the latest from around the league…

  • Nationals southpaw John Lannan is still not drawing trade interest according to MLB.com's Bill Ladson. His $5MM salary continues to be a problem, with one executive saying "teams would rather use a low-paid Minor Leaguer for the fifth spot before dealing with Lannan's money."
  • The Yankees have no plans to talk to Russell Martin about a contract extension soon, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (on Twitter). Martin will become a free agent after this season, and the two sides briefly discussed a multi-year deal this past offseason.
  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that a panel of baseball officials will help resolve a local television revenue dispute between the Nationals and Orioles. The two clubs share ownership of MASN, but the O's hold a substantially larger stake. The current deal was hammered out when the Nats moved to Washington in 2005.

Quick Hits: Marlins, Jeter, Lincecum, Chisenhall

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | April 17, 2012 at 3:47pm CDT

In a piece inspired by early-season injuries to key relievers Tom Verducci of SI.com points out that closers tend to be inefficient investments. "No one wants to admit it," he writes, "but the modern bullpen is a failure." Here are the rest of today's links…

  • Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria told Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports that he likes what he has seen from manager Ozzie Guillen despite last week's controversial remarks. “He’s very good for here," Loria said. "Excellent. Not only for here, for any team."
  • When the Yankees signed Derek Jeter to a three-year, $51MM contract two offseasons ago, they felt it was an overpay, Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes. But the shortstop played tremendously down the stretch in 2011 and has started the 2012 season well.
  • ESPN.com’s Buster Olney suggests the Giants will likely want to see Tim Lincecum rebound from his early-season struggles before offering him an extension at market value.
  • Indians manager Manny Acta told Jim Bowden on MLB Network Radio that top prospect Lonnie Chisenhall remains Cleveland's future third baseman and won’t become trade bait this summer (Twitter link, audio here).
