Mets, Oliver Perez Not Close To Deal

By Tim Dierkes | January 20, 2009 at 2:53pm CDT

According to SI.com’s Jon Heyman, the Mets realize now they won’t be locking up Oliver Perez quickly.  Their reported three-year, $30MM offer is not on the table and Perez is still seeking about $60MM over five years.  It’s the same old story regarding their backup plans: Ben Sheets, Randy Wolf, and Jon Garland.

Prince Fielder Staying Put

By Tim Dierkes | January 20, 2009 at 12:01pm CDT

Adam Mertz of The Capital Times talked with Brewers GM Doug Melvin yesterday.  Melvin was asked whether he would commit to Prince Fielder for the entire year, and the GM replied, "Yeah."  Melvin said he never discussed a Fielder trade and hasn’t received inquiries on his first baseman.  Melvin doesn’t seem too worried about settling Fielder’s ’09 salary with Scott Boras.

Mertz also learned that Melvin expects Ben Sheets to sign elsewhere, though the door remains open.

Mets-Sheets Chatter

By Tim Dierkes | January 19, 2009 at 11:50pm CDT

MetsBlog’s Matthew Cerrone transcribes some comments from SI.com’s Tom Verducci, and also provides his own insight into Ben Sheets’ possible demands.  The Mets like him, but they want to do a heavily incentive-based deal similar to Brad Penny’s.  Sheets, having had a much better season than Penny, is apparently seeking two years and $18MM or so with a third-year option.

I’m surprised Sheets would want to lock himself in for multiple years given the down market.  If he’s confident in his health, a straight one-year deal could be best.  Sheets did already turn down such an offer from the Brewers (their offer of arbitration), but that was back on December 7th.

Reds Unlikely For Abreu, Sheets, Oliver Perez

By Tim Dierkes | January 19, 2009 at 4:48pm CDT

John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer talked to Reds GM Walt Jocketty, who is currently focused on hammering out one-year deals for arbitration-eligible players David Weathers and Edwin Encarnacion.

Fay inquired about free agents such as Bobby Abreu, Ben Sheets, and Oliver Perez.  Jocketty indicated that all three are out of the Reds’ price range.

Mets Considering Sheets, Not In On Pettitte

By Nat Boyle | January 18, 2009 at 9:28am CDT

David Lennon of newsday.com reports the Mets are keeping Ben Sheets on their radar as the market for starting pitching begins to thin. However, even in this thin market, they are apparently not considering Andy Pettitte:

"As for Pettitte, a person familiar with the club’s thinking said the Mets are not involved with the former Yankee."

Their primary focus still remains on Oliver Perez; however, should that fall through, Sheets is being looked at as a viable alternative.

"For his part, [Mets GM Omar] Minaya has played it cool, suggesting that he has other options… Two of the most intriguing names still available are Ben Sheets and Andy Pettitte, with the Mets only recently showing interest in the former Brewers ace. A person familiar with the situation said yesterday that Sheets is now being discussed, but it’s unclear what the parameters of such a deal would be."

John Harper of the New York Daily News makes his case for Ben Sheets here. And here, Tom Haudricourt clarifies the implications of a Sheets/Mets deal for the Brewers:

"If Sheets signs with the Mets, the Brewers would get their second-round pick next June, not their first. The Mets already have surrendered their first-round pick to the Angels for signing closer Francisco Rodriguez. Sheets’ ranking among Class A pitchers is 79.038; Rodriguez’s is 87.196. Thus, because Rodriguez is ranked higher, the Angels would get the Mets’ first-round pick, not the Brewers. That’s the way the system works."

Rosenthal On Andruw, Nady, Lyon, Madson

By Tim Dierkes | January 16, 2009 at 3:00pm CDT

The latest from Ken Rosenthal…

  • The Braves are pulling back for the moment in their search for an outfield bat.  They’ll hope for a free agent bargain or the right trade.  Rosenthal says they’re torn about Andruw Jones.  The Braves seek a right-handed hitter but aren’t dead set on it.  They were unwilling to meet the Yankees’ demands for Xavier Nady.
  • Brandon Lyon’s agent is telling teams he has a two-year, $9MM offer in hand (Kyle Farnsworth money).  The Tigers or Twins are possibilities there, while the Cardinals may have offered one year.  Jon Paul Morosi confirms Detroit’s interest, but says they’ve yet to make an offer.  Morosi believes the Tigers have about $5MM left in their budget.
  • Ryan Madson turned down a three-year, $12MM extension from the Phillies.  The Scott Boras client is eligible for free agency after the season.
  • Execs have all kinds of concerns with Oliver Perez: his flyball tendencies, frequent walks, and inability to reach 200 innings.
  • The Yankees have little interest in Ben Sheets and Freddy Garcia.  The Rangers, Mets, and White Sox remain in the mix for Garcia.
  • The Brewers and other teams are in on Braden Looper, while the Orioles and Dodgers have backed off.
  • Edgardo Alfonzo is playing well in the Venezuelan Winter League and could make a comeback.

Cards Could Pursue Free Agent Pitchers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 15, 2009 at 6:26pm CDT

According to MLB.com’s Matthew Leach, the Cardinals would love to upgrade their rotation and could do so via free agency. Ideally they would trade an outfielder for pitching, but the Cards are interested in pitchers with limited health risks willing to sign a short-term contract.

Leach confirmed with Jon Garland’s agent that the Cardinals "have called," but nothing has happened beyond that. Leach breaks down the chances that Andy Pettitte, Braden Looper, Randy Wolf, Odalis Perez, Ben Sheets or even Oliver Perez ends up in St. Louis.

The Cardinals appear unlikely to add a reliver or a second baseman.

Jon Garland Rejects Offer From D’Backs

By Tim Dierkes | January 15, 2009 at 3:39pm CDT

According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, starter Jon Garland rejected a contract offer from the Diamondbacks.  The offer is unknown, but Piecoro believes the D’Backs have about $4MM left to spend this winter.

Pedro Martinez, Ben Sheets, and Jason Jennings are also on the radar.  Piecoro figures Braden Looper would make sense based on his similarity to Garland.

Mets Lose Lowe; What’s Next?

By Tim Dierkes | January 13, 2009 at 10:50pm CDT

Ben Shpigel of the New York Times looks at the Mets’ plans now that Derek Lowe has signed with the division-rival Braves.

Contrary to Jon Heyman’s report yesterday, Shpigel says the Mets have not yet made an offer to Oliver Perez.  He expects that to happen within a day or two.  The Mets are also "weighing a run at Ben Sheets, but are wary of his injury history."  This Sheets-Mets idea is picking up steam.  Sheets is also a "person of interest" for the Rangers, but they have not made an offer.  Randy Wolf seems to be Mets’ fallback plan.  David Lennon says the Mets are also involved with Jon Garland.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the Wolfs of the world – do those guys all end up with one-year, $8MM deals?
