Minor Moves: Coello, Mather, Bass

By Steve Adams | January 28, 2013 at 7:41pm CDT

We'll keep track of tonight's minor transactions right here…

  • The Angels have signed right-hander Robert Coello to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training, tweets Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times. The 28-year-old has allowed 12 runs in 12 big league innings, but he has a 4.05 ERA, 9.7 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9 in 202 1/3 Triple-A innings. He's spent time in the Red Sox, Cubs and Blue Jays organizations.
  • The Phillies have signed both Joe Mather and Brian Bass to a minor league contracts, according to the CBS Sports Transactions page. The 30-year-old Mather hit just .209/.256/.324 for the Cubs last season but still appeared in 103 games. He's a career .219/.271/.357 hitter. Bass, 31, has a 5.16 ERA over 183 Major League innings between the Twins, Orioles and Pirates. The right-hander spent last season with the Astros' Triple-A affiliate and posted a 5.56 ERA in 77 2/3 innings. Bass hasn't appeared in the Majors since 2010.

Minor Moves: Byung-Hyun Kim, Brian Bass

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 17, 2012 at 8:04pm CDT

We'll keep track of today's minor moves right here…

  • Byung-Hyun Kim signed with the Nexen Heroes of the KBO for $437K, according to a link from the Yonhap News Agency passed along by Dan of MyKBO.net. Kim, who's still just 32, has a 4.42 ERA with 8.6 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9 in parts of nine MLB seasons. He famously allowed game-changing home runs to Tino Martinez and Scott Brosius in the 2001 World Series. Kim last appeared in the Major Leagues in 2007.
  • Former big leaguer Brian Bass signed with the Hanwha Eagles of the KBO for $300K, according to a Naver Sports article passed along by Dan of MyKBO.net. Bass, 30, has a 5.16 ERA with 5.1 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 in 183 innings over the course of three seasons with the Pirates, Orioles and Twins. The Pirates granted the right-hander free agency after the 2011 season, but he last appeared in the Major Leagues in 2010.

Minor Deals: Adams, Ryan, Bass, Santos

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 6, 2010 at 9:21pm CDT

We've seen our share of major moves since yesterday, but the minor deals keep streaming in, too. Here they are:

  • The Mets signed Russ Adams and Dusty Ryan to minor league contracts, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. The Blue Jays made Adams their first round pick in 2002, but he disappointed in parts of five seasons in Toronto, batting .247/.313/.372. The Blue Jays drafted Adams as a shortstop, but he has big league experience at second base and in left field. Ryan, 26, batted .199/.333/.349 for the Padres' Triple-A affiliate in 2010. He had cameos with the Tigers in 2008 and 2009.
  • Oddly enough, the Tigers signed a former Mets backstop today. MLB.com's Jason Beck reports that Detroit added Omir Santos on a minor league deal (Twitter link). The 29-year-old last appeared in the majors on the 2009 Mets.
  • The Phillies signed right-hander Brian Bass, according to Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer (on Twitter). The 28-year-old has a 5.16 ERA with 5.1 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 in 183 major league innings.

Odds & Ends: Young, Torre, Williams, Bass, Ethier

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | September 16, 2010 at 9:07pm CDT

Links for Thursday, after lots of chatter about Derek Jeter's acting ability…

  • The Padres will wait until Saturday to activate Chris Young from the disabled list, at which point they'll need to remove someone from the 40-man roster according to MLB.com's Corey Brock (Twitter link).
  • Dylan Hernandez of The Los Angeles Times tweets that Joe Torre has informed his wife and Dodgers GM Ned Colletti about what he plans to do next season, but he will not make his decision public just yet.
  • White Sox GM Kenny Williams chatted with Joe Posnanski about football and the challenges of being in second place. Check it out at SI.com.
  • Brian Bass cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to Triple A, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (on Twitter). The Pirates designated Bass for assignment earlier in the week.
  • Andre Ethier told MLB.com's Ken Gurnick that it doesn't even make sense to comment on the rumor that he'd like to play in Boston.
  • Joe Pawlikowski of FanGraphs argues that the Royals should offer Wilson Betemit a contract this offseason, since he can be something of a "bridge between the present and the future."
  • Indians GM Mark Shapiro told Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports that he and assistant GM Chris Antonetti met with friend and former colleague Josh Byrnes. The former D'Backs GM "would make anybody better," including the Indians, Shapiro said.

Pirates Claim Chris Leroux, DFA Brian Bass

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | September 13, 2010 at 1:27pm CDT

The Pirates claimed Chris Leroux off of waivers and designated Brian Bass for assignment, according to the team. Leroux, a 26-year-old right-hander, appeared in 17 games for the Marlins this year. He struck out 18 batters in as many innings, though he also walked 11. The Montrealer posted a 6.28 ERA in three minor league stops this year, but his strikeout (7.2 K/9) and walk (2.5 BB/9) numbers were good.

Bass, a 28-year-old righty, spent most of the season in the bullpen at Triple A Indianapolis, where he had strong numbers. In 69 innings, he posted a 3.26 ERA with 6.9 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9, though he struggled in 7.1 major league innings this year. He cleared waivers when the Pirates designated him for assignment earlier in the season.

Brian Bass Clears Waivers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 15, 2010 at 12:47pm CDT

SATURDAY, 12:47pm: MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports that Bass has cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to Triple-A.

MONDAY, 3:03pm: The Pirates designated Brian Bass for assignment, according to Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (via Twitter). The right-hander is out of options, so he'll be exposed to other clubs, but the Pirates wanted to make room for Ross Ohlendorf.

Bass, 28, allowed nine hits and eight walks in 6.1 innings for the Pirates this season for a 12.79 ERA. The Pirates signed Bass to a minor league deal in January, a month after the Orioles non-tendered him. Bass appeared in 48 games for the Orioles last year, logging 86.1 innings. He allowed 106 hits a year ago with 5.6 K/9 and 4.6 BB/9 so it wasn't a surprise when the Orioles declined to offer Bass a contract.

Within ten days we'll see Bass traded, released or, if he clears waivers, assigned to the minor leagues. Bass has been just part of the problem for a Pirates pitching staff that ranks last in the National League in runs allowed (195) and earned runs allowed (179).

Pirates Add Bass, Carlin, Myrow

By Tim Dierkes | January 12, 2010 at 10:49am CDT

The Pirates reached agreements with pitcher Brian Bass, catcher Luke Carlin, and outfielder Bryan Myrow on minor league deals, according to a team press release.

Bass, 28, posted a 4.90 ERA, 5.6 K/9, and 4.6 BB/9 in 86.3 relief innings last year.  He allowed 11 home runs in that time despite an excellent 61.4% groundball rate.  The Orioles non-tendered him after the season.

Carlin, 29, hit .321/.430/.481 for the D'Backs' Triple A club.  They still chose to outright him in early December.  Myrow, 33, hit .307/.419/.496 for the Triple A affiliates of the Pirates and White Sox.  Both players have had multiple Triple A stints, but their 15% walk rates in '09 are intriguing.
