Minor Moves: Bard, Sullivan, Pearce, Michaels

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 29, 2012 at 6:27pm CDT

Here are the latest minor moves from around MLB…

  • The Dodgers released Cory Sullivan and catcher Josh Bard, tweets Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times.  The pair both signed minor league deals with L.A. in December.
  • The Yankees have signed Steve Pearce to a minor league contract, reports Josh Norris of the Trentonian (Twitter link).  Pearce, a former well-regarded prospect with the Pirates, signed a minor league deal with the Twins in December but was released on Tuesday.
  • The Nationals released outfielder Jason Michaels, the team announced. The Nationals signed the 11-year veteran to a minor league contract in December.
  • The Brewers signed catcher Jason Jaramillo to a minor league deal, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel tweets. The Cubs released the backstop a couple of days ago after signing him to a minor league deal in January.
  • The Red Sox released catcher Max St. Pierre, according to Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com (on Twitter). SoxProspects.com first reported the transaction.
  • The Brewers released Corey Patterson then re-signed him to another minor league contract, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports (Twitter links). Patterson, who signed a minor league deal with Milwaukee in January, will start the season at Triple-A.
  • The Indians announced that they acquired right-hander Jairo Asencio from the Braves for cash. The right-handed reliever led the International League in saves in 2009 and 2011 and posted a 1.81 ERA with 11.5 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 in 54 2/3 innings at Triple-A last year. Asencio is out of options.
  • The Mets have signed infielder Josh Rodriguez to a minor league deal, Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com reports. The Pirates selected the 27-year-old in last year's Rule 5 draft, returned him to the Indians in April, and traded for him in June. Rodriguez, who played in seven MLB games last year, posted a .258/.323/.349 line in 330 plate appearances in the upper minors.

Dodgers Sign Bard, Ledezma, Castillo, Guzman, More

By Tim Dierkes | December 14, 2011 at 7:25am CDT

The Dodgers announced the signing of 15 non-roster players yesterday, reported MLB.com's Ken Gurnick: catcher Josh Bard, lefty reliever Wil Ledezma, lefty reliever Alberto Castillo, righty reliever Angel Guzman, outfielder Cory Sullivan, righty reliever Fernando Nieve, righty reliever Jose Ascanio, righty Ryan Tucker, righty Will Savage, lefty Matt Chico, lefty Scott Rice, corner infielder Jeff Baisley, infielder Lance Zawadzki, and infielder Luis Cruz.

Bard, 33, had 86 plate appearances for the Mariners this year and another 250 in Triple-A.  His signing was first rumored last week at the Winter Meetings.  Ledezma, 30, briefly appeared in the Majors with Toronto this year.  He struck out 64 batters in 48 Triple-A innings as well.  Castillo, a 36-year-old Cuban, tossed 11 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks and a strong 42 1/3 frames at Triple-A.  His near-deal was first reported last week.

Ascanio, 26, appeared briefly in the bigs with the Pirates this year and also whiffed 50 in 44 Triple-A innings.  He was part of the July '09 John Grabow-Tom Gorzelanny trade with the Cubs, but he had labrum surgery in October of that year.  Tucker, 25, is a former first-round pick of the Marlins who pitched five innings with the Rangers this year and 68 1/3 more in Triple-A.  Guzman, Sullivan, Nieve, Chico, Baisley, Zawadzki, and Cruz have also spent time in the Majors.  Guzman, notably, was a successful setup man for the Cubs in '09.

Phillies Sign Cory Sullivan

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 11, 2011 at 2:14pm CDT

The Phillies signed Cory Sullivan to a minor league deal, according to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki. The outfielder will be in the Phillies' minor league camp.

Sullivan appeared in 57 games for the Astros in 2010 after Houston signed him last winter. The 31-year-old played all three outfield positions last year, though most of his big league experience comes as a center fielder. Sullivan has never done much at the plate and he struggled more than usual in 2010, hitting just .188/.257/.234 in 71 plate appearances before the Astros cut him loose in June.

Domonic Brown, Ben Francisco, Ross Gload, Raul Ibanez, John Mayberry, Shane Victorino, Brandon Moss and Delwyn Young will also be competing for playing time in the outfield this spring.

Sullivan Elects Free Agency; Cash, Daigle To Minors

By Zachary Links | June 23, 2010 at 4:10pm CDT

WEDNESDAY: Sullivan has elected free agency, while Cash and Daigle have accepted minor league assignments, according to Alyson Footer of the Astros (via Twitter).

SUNDAY: The Astros have designated Kevin Cash, Casey Daigle, and Cory Sullivan for assignment, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.  The moves were made in order to recall catcher Jason Castro, outfielder Jason Bourgeois, and third baseman Chris Johnson from Triple-A Round Rock.

Cash has caught 18 games for Houston this season, posting a slash line of .216/.286/.353 with two homers.  The 32-year-old also pitched an inning in relief for the club in a blowout against the Reds in May.

Daigle pitched six innings across eight games for the Astros with an ERA of 7.50 with 4.5 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9.  This season marked Daigle's first cameo in the big leagues since 2006.

Sullivan, 30, has struggled at the plate thus far in 2010.  In 70 plate appearances, the outfielder has hit .190/.261/.238.

According to a team press release, the moves will take effect on Tuesday.  Castro and Johnson will move into the starting lineup, according to Alyson Footer of the Astros (via Twitter).

Astros Sign Cory Sullivan

By Tim Dierkes | January 20, 2010 at 11:36pm CDT

The Astros signed outfielder Cory Sullivan to a minor league deal, tweets Alyson Footer.  Sullivan, 30, hit .250/.338/.382 for the Mets in 157 plate appearances last year while mainly playing left field.  He also tallied a .290/.352/.367 line in 320 PAs for the Mets' Triple A affiliate.  Sullivan was non-tendered on the December 12th deadline.

Also, in case you missed it, Jeremy Reed signed a minor league deal with the Blue Jays yesterday.  Like Sullivan, Reed played outfield for the '09 Mets and was non-tendered in December.  The 28-year-old hit .242/.301/.304 in 177 plate appearances for the big club, playing all three outfield positions and even a little first base.  Before the 2004 season, Baseball America ranked Reed the 25th best prospect in the game.

Rosenthal On Sheets, Cruz, Cabrera, Reyes

By Tim Dierkes | January 21, 2009 at 8:35am CDT

The latest from Ken Rosenthal…

  • Rosenthal recommends the Yankees sign Ben Sheets and Juan Cruz, partially because they’d pay less of a cost in draft picks than any other team.  One exec predicted Sheets would require a $6-8MM base with the potential to earn at least $14MM, and possibly a "lucrative club option."  Despite Rosenthal’s recommendation, the Yanks remain focused on Andy Pettitte (who is not weighing an offer from the Astros).
  • Industry sources tell Rosenthal that the Red Sox have kept their payroll flexible in case mid and low-revenue teams need to dump contracts.
  • The A’s probably cannot afford both Nick Johnson and Orlando Cabrera, so they’ll wait to see what happens with Cabrera before pursuing the trade with Washington.
  • Prince Fielder filed for $8MM against the Brewers’ $6MM; Rosenthal indicates the team feared he’d file higher.
  • One chatter mentioned yesterday that Cory Sullivan and Jeremy Reed are the exact same player; one GM said the same to Rosenthal.
  • Dennys Reyes has backed off his demand for Jeremy Affeldt money (two years, $8MM).  Affeldt seemed like a bargain at the time.
  • Expected to be in attendance at Kris Benson’s upcoming throwing session: the Dodgers, Rangers, Padres, Rockies, and D’Backs.  Looks like an NL West affair.

Mets Sign Cory Sullivan

By Tim Dierkes | January 20, 2009 at 12:09pm CDT

According to Troy Renck, the Mets signed outfielder Cory Sullivan to a Major League deal worth $600K with $300K in incentives.  Sullivan is known as a strong defender, but his plus/minus numbers in 1123 center field innings don’t support it.

Renck On Redding, Fogg, Jennings

By Tim Dierkes | January 7, 2009 at 4:45pm CDT

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post weighs in on various free agent pitchers.

  • The Rockies are a long shot for Tim Redding following their Jason Marquis acquisition.  The Mets and Orioles still like him; he may command $2.5-3MM.
  • Josh Fogg would like to return to Colorado, but has drawn interest from other teams as well.
  • The Rangers and D’Backs are interested in Jason Jennings.  Jennings missed most of the season after signing with Texas for $4MM.  He had surgery in May to repair a torn flexor tendon in his forearm.
  • The Mets are one team with an eye on outfielder Cory Sullivan.

Marquis Unlikely For Rockies

By Tim Dierkes | December 8, 2008 at 6:47pm CDT

6:47pm: Troy Renck says the Rockies told the Cubs they didn’t have room in the budget for Marquis.  The Rox may attempt to acquire a starter via trade, using Huston Street and Luis Vizcaino as chips.

Other notes from Renck: the Padres and Rangers have interest in free agent outfielder Cory Sullivan.  And interest in Willy Taveras is minimal given Friday’s non-tender deadline.

5:13pm: According to MLB.com’s Thomas Harding, the Rockies have internally discussed the possibility of acquiring Cubs’ starter Jason Marquis.  However, Marquis isn’t exactly the front-rotation type they seek.  Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald heard from Cubs people that "nothing of substance is getting done" on the Marquis-Rockies front.
