Angels Part Ways With Hitting Coaches Jeremy Reed, John Mallee, Third Base Coach Mike Gallego

9:06pm: In addition to Reed and Mallee, Mike Gallego will not return to the Angels as third base coach next season, reports Sarah Valenzuela of the LA Times (Twitter link). Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports that Gallego will be reassigned within the organization (Twitter link).

6:57pm: Assistant hitting coach John Mallee is also being let go, the team informed reporters (including Sam Blum of the Athletic). Mallee got the job over the 2019-20 offseason, not long after a stint as the lead hitting coach in Philadelphia.

4:59pm: The Angels are parting ways with hitting coach Jeremy Reed, reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post (Twitter link). The club has yet to announce the news, but it seems they’ll soon search for a new hitting coach to work under manager Phil Nevin.

Reed, 41, has spent the past four seasons in the role. His hiring came within a few weeks of the tabbing of Brad Ausmus as manager, but the Halos have had a fair bit of managerial turnover in the few seasons since then. Ausmus lasted just one year on the job before Joe Maddon was hired going into the 2020 season. Maddon held the position for two-plus seasons but was dismissed in June, with Nevin tabbed as his replacement on an interim basis. Nevin signed a one-year deal and had the interim tag removed after the 2022 campaign wrapped up.

The Halos were a below-average offensive team over the past four seasons. Since the start of 2019, they rank 22nd in runs scored. They’re 21st in on-base percentage and 18th in slugging. This past season was a particular struggle, as the Halos mustered only a .297 OBP (one of five teams to reach base at a sub-.300 clip). The ranked 15th with a .390 slugging mark, but no MLB team struck out more often than the Angels’ 25.7% rate. Of the 11 Anaheim hitters to top 200 plate appearances, just four (Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani, Taylor Ward and Luis Rengifo) posted a wRC+ better than the 100 league average.

As with any coach, Reed certainly can’t shoulder all the blame for the Halos’ subpar performance. Los Angeles has run out top-heavy rosters for the past few seasons, and this year’s group was no exception. The Angels lost Anthony Rendon and David Fletcher for extended stretches, leaving them to rely more than anticipated on players like Andrew Velazquez and Matt Duffy. The Halos also saw sharp regressions from Jared Walsh and Max Stassi, both of whom had seemed to break out earlier in Reed’s tenure as hitting coach.

That said, the Halos have also seen some highly-touted young players struggle at the big league level. Left fielder Jo Adell is the most prominent example, as the former top prospect has managed just a .215/.259/.356 line through his first 161 MLB games. Brandon Marsh had serviceable numbers overall but significant strikeout concerns that presumably contributed to the Halos’ willingness to deal him for catching prospect Logan O’Hoppe at this past trade deadline. Adell and O’Hoppe could both play key roles on next year’s team as the Angels try to snap an eight-year playoff drought.

Angels Select Gerardo Reyes, Ryan Aguilar

The Angels announced a host of roster moves before tonight’s series in Toronto. Relievers Aaron Loup and Ryan Tepera and outfielder Taylor Ward were all placed on the restricted list. That’s standard procedure for players who haven’t been vaccinated against COVID-19 and are thus prohibited from traveling into Canada. In order to replace them on the roster, the Halos recalled righty José Marte and selected the contracts of reliever Gerardo Reyes and outfielder Ryan Aguilar. All three players have been designated as “substitutes,” meaning they can later be taken off the roster and returned to the minor leagues without passing through waivers.

It’s likely to be a temporary promotion for that trio, but Reyes and Aguilar have long-awaited opportunities to make an impact at the major league level. Reyes has a bit of big league experience, having come out of the bullpen 27 times for the 2019 Padres. The right-hander posted a 7.62 ERA over 26 innings. He spent 2020 at the alternate training site and was dealt from San Diego to Anaheim that deadline in exchange for veteran catcher Jason Castro.

Reyes was outrighted off the 40-man roster last March and underwent Tommy John surgery not long after, but he’s returned to action in Salt Lake this season. Through 39 innings with the Bees, the 29-year-old has a 3.69 ERA. He’s punched out an above-average 29.2% of opposing hitters but issued walks at an elevated 15.7% clip.

Aguilar, meanwhile, could get a chance to make his MLB debut. A 31st round pick of the Brewers out of the University of Arizona in 2016, he remained in the Milwaukee farm system through the end of last season. The 27-year-old signed a minor league deal with the Halos over the offseason and has spent the year at Double-A Rocket City. He’s posted an excellent .280/.427/.517 line with a massive 19% walk rate (albeit against generally younger competition) to earn a big league call. A left-handed hitter, he’s played primarily right field with the Trash Pandas.

Loup, Tepera and Ward will miss the weekend series. They’ll presumably rejoin the club on Monday, when they return home to host the Yankees. Sam Blum of the Athletic tweets that hitting coach Jeremy Reed also did not make the trip to Toronto.

Angels To Name Jeremy Reed Hitting Coach

The Angels will name Jeremy Reed their new hitting coach, reports Fancred’s Jon Heyman (on Twitter).

A former big league outfielder who spent parts of eight seasons in the Major Leagues, Reed will receive his first big league coaching appointment as the Halos’ new hitting coach. Reed, who replaces Eric Hinske in that capacity, was the Angels’ minor league hitting coordinator for the past two seasons. Prior to that, he held that role with the Brewers from 2014-16. He’s a known commodity for general manager Billy Eppler, who hired Reed two offseasons ago, and for newly minted manager Brad Ausmus, who undoubtedly worked with Reed to some extent while serving as a special advisor to Eppler this past season.

Hinske’s tenure as the Angels’ hitting coach will last just one season — he was hired on Oct. 23 a year ago — though it’s hardly uncommon for new managers to overhaul the coaching staff upon taking over.

Twins Acquire Jeremy Reed

The Twins acquired outfielder Jeremy Reed from the Brewers for future considerations, tweets Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.  The Twins will send Reed to Triple-A Rochester.

Reed had signed a minor league deal with the Brewers in January.  He made the Opening Day roster, but went hitless in seven plate appearances and was designated for assignment.  He later cleared waivers and accepted a Triple-A assignment.  The 29-year-old former top prospect was hitting .233/.310/.350 in 118 plate appearances for the Nashville Sounds, playing mostly at the outfield corners.

According to another Christensen tweet, there is "strong speculation" that Reed will take the place of infielder/outfielder Brian Dinkelman, who could have his contract purchased by the Twins tonight.  Earlier, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire indicated to Kelsie Smith of the St. Paul Pioneer Press that the Twins would call up a left-handed hitter, one who would have to be added to the 40-man roster (Twitter link).  Smith notes that a spot could be opened by transferring catcher Joe Mauer to the 60-day DL.  Jason Kubel, Jim Thome, and Tsuyoshi Nishioka are the other Twins bats currently on the disabled list.

Jeremy Reed Clears Waivers

WEDNESDAY: Reed cleared waivers and has accepted a Triple-A assignment, tweets Haudricourt.

MONDAY: The Brewers designated outfielder Jeremy Reed for assignment, the team announced today.  Catcher Jonathan Lucroy was reinstated from the DL in a corresponding move, and the team's 40-man roster stands at 39. 

Reed, a former top prospect, turns 30 in June.  He made the Opening Day roster as a pinch-hitter after a strong spring, but was hitless in seven regular season plate appearances.  Talking to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Brewers GM Doug Melvin explained the choice to cut Reed and go with three catchers for the time being.  The GM also noted that Reed has until Wednesday to tell the team whether he'll declare free agency.

The Brewers will have a tough decision to make when Corey Hart returns from the DL, as catchers George Kottaras and Wil Nieves are out of options and Haudricourt says one of them could be on the bubble.

Brewers Sign Jeremy Reed

The Brewers announced that they signed Jeremy Reed to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training.

The 29-year-old appeared in 14 games for the Blue Jays last year, but spent most of the season at Triple-A. He hit .279/.342/.412 in 358 plate appearances for Blue Jays and White Sox affiliates last year. The center fielder is no stranger to the major leagues, though. He has appeared in at least 13 games every season since 2004, when he broke in with the Mariners.

Reed will compete with outfielders Chris Dickerson, Brandon Boggs, Caleb Gindl and Logan Schafer for a backup outfielder's job this spring.

White Sox Sign Jeremy Reed

The White Sox signed outfielder Jeremy Reed to a minor league deal yesterday, according to the team's transactions page.  Reed has been assigned to the Triple A Charlotte Knights.

Reed, 29, signed a minor league deal with the Blue Jays in January.  He elected free agency after being outrighted earlier this month.  Reed has come full circle since being ranked the 25th-best prospect in baseball as a member of the Knights heading into the 2004 season.  He was traded to the Mariners in June of that year as the centerpiece in the Freddy Garcia deal.  Reed hasn't hit as expected in his big league career, but he has been able to handle center field.

Jeremy Reed Declares Free Agency

The Blue Jays outrighted Jeremy Reed to create space on their 40-man roster and the utilityman refused the assignment and elected free agency, according to the team (via Twitter). Reed, 29, picked up three hits in 21 at bats for the Jays this year, walking twice and hitting one home run. He played left, right and first base, though most of his MLB experience has come in center field. 

Reed has a .253/.311/.356 line in parts of seven seasons with the Mets, Mariners and Blue Jays and UZR/150 suggests that Reed has been an above-average center fielder in his career. He joins outfielders such as Rocco Baldelli, Cory Sullivan and Jermaine Dye on our list of current free agents.

Astros Sign Cory Sullivan

The Astros signed outfielder Cory Sullivan to a minor league deal, tweets Alyson Footer.  Sullivan, 30, hit .250/.338/.382 for the Mets in 157 plate appearances last year while mainly playing left field.  He also tallied a .290/.352/.367 line in 320 PAs for the Mets' Triple A affiliate.  Sullivan was non-tendered on the December 12th deadline.

Also, in case you missed it, Jeremy Reed signed a minor league deal with the Blue Jays yesterday.  Like Sullivan, Reed played outfield for the '09 Mets and was non-tendered in December.  The 28-year-old hit .242/.301/.304 in 177 plate appearances for the big club, playing all three outfield positions and even a little first base.  Before the 2004 season, Baseball America ranked Reed the 25th best prospect in the game.
