Odds And Ends: Benitez, David Wells, Delgado

By Alejandro Leal | May 10, 2008 at 4:46pm CDT

And for my first trick: My very first Odds and Ends.

  • The Toronto Star’s aptly named Blue Jays blog reports the team placed Vernon Wells on the 15-day DL, and they expect him to be out six to eight weeks after fracturing his left wrist during Friday night’s game. The Jay’s also placed reliever Jeremy Accardo on the 15-day DL with a strained right forearm. As replacements, the Jays will call up infielder Joe Inglett and veteran hurler Armando Benitez. With Wells out, do the Jays re-enter the Barry Bonds speculation market?
  • David Wells in Pinstripes? No deal says Joe Girardi. Wells did look comfy during a recent appearance on the not-aptly-called Best Damn Sports Show Period.
  • Mets manager Willie Randolph had penciled slugger Carlos Delgado in the seventh spot before Friday’s game against the Reds (postponed due to rain), marking the lowest spot he’s been slotted at in 12 years. Delgado didn’t see it as a demotion, but still, in light of the recent talk about his release, it raises eyebrows. For the record, Delgado is 6-20 in the last six games, with two doubles, a home run, and four RBI.

Will Mets Release Delgado?

By Nat Boyle | April 27, 2008 at 11:18am CDT

Is Carlos Delgado the next Frank Thomas?  Or worse yet, is he the next Mike Piazza?  Sammy Sosa?  Barry Bonds?  (steroid implications aside).  So asks Joel Sherman of the NY Post who’s headline – always in that in-your-face extra-bold verdana – reads "DELGADO ON HIS WAY OUT AT FIRST".  With aging veterans out of work, and a rash of young talent being locked up, 2008 really feels like the end of one era and the marked beginning of the next.

An arbitrary fun-fact from Sherman, "In the past 25 years, just one champion has had a regular first baseman older than 32 (the 2001 Diamondbacks with 37-year-old Mark Grace)."  Delgado’s making $16MM this season, and although 35 is often a notorious age at which batters decline, this cliff fall is not the norm.  Still, a contract of that magnitude will keep Delgado in New York for at least a short while longer.

In Buster Olney’s latest, he speculated Delgado’s release, which seems to be slightly more than speculation at this point.  Olney cited Xavier Nady or Scott Hatteberg as potential replacements should the Mets want to trade for a replacement.  Nady, however, might not be available until the Pirates say "uncle."

Should the 35-yr old Delgado reenter free agent land, what kind of interest will there be?  Most likely less than there was for Frank Thomas, but someone would throw him a bone as he’d be low risk, high reward.  Not unlike Thomas, PECOTA projects a .265-20-80 season from the veteran and while that’s not a $16MM season, it’s still adequate production for many teams from a corner infielder or DH.

Olney’s Latest: Nady, Delgado, Clement, Lofton

By Joe Pawlikowski | April 26, 2008 at 12:25pm CDT

Buster Olney has some thoughts. Let’s have a looksee.

  • He thinks that Xavier Nady could fit with the Mets or the Indians, but notes that the Pirates are sitting tight for now, hoping to compete this year. They’ll be singing a different tune in July.
  • Olney goes on to speculate that the Mets could release Carlos Delgado if he continues his weak hitting. Nady would seem a decent replacement, though he hasn’t played first since 2006. Scott Hatteberg could be another option.
  • In what he calls "pure speculation," Olney suggests that the Mariners trade Jeff Clement to the Red Sox for Coco Crisp and some pitching. It’s a rather vague trade idea, and I’d think that the Mariners could fetch a lot more than Crisp if they opted to trade Clement, who is having his way with AAA pitching.
  • It appears Jake Peavy wants the Padres to sign Kenny Lofton. With the way Jim Edmonds and Scott Hairston are hitting, I can’t blame him.

Frank Thomas Suitors

By Tim Dierkes | April 21, 2008 at 8:36am CDT

The Blue Jays are on the hook for the rest of Frank Thomas’ salary this year, making him a fine bargain for a team looking for a DH.  It seems that the signing team will not be liable for his 2009 vesting option.  As an injury-prone DH with clubhouse concerns, Thomas has similarities to Barry Bonds.  The Big Hurt will come more cheaply, offering less production but no steroid baggage.  As far as suitors:

  • Mariners GM Bill Bavasi will talk to his scouts about Thomas.  Question for Mariners fans: does Thomas offer more at DH than Jeff Clement, who is raking at Triple A?
  • Rangers GM Jon Daniels didn’t rule Thomas out but seems to be leaning away from it.  The Rangers have plenty of DHs on hand already.
  • The A’s will at least have an internal discussion about Thomas, but they aren’t tipping their hand.
  • Rays manager Joe Maddon was noncommital when asked about Thomas.  They did just add Dan Johnson.
  • Could the Mets follow suit and release Carlos Delgado?

Odds And Ends: Crede, Marlins, Canó, Bonds

By Matthew Birt | March 2, 2008 at 4:45pm CDT

Some interesting tidbits this afternoon before I check out:

  • Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that one of Brian Sabean’s top advisors, Ted Uhlaender, was present to witness Joe Crede’s homer off of Arizona’s Max Scherzer on Saturday.  Seems more and more likely, as Crede proves his back is fine, that he will be moved to the Giants.  Will the White Sox get Kevin Correia in exchange for Crede?  The White Sox need a back-of-the-rotation guy, and Kenny Williams and company think they can win this year.  So prospects probably won’t get it done.  While the Giants could conceivably use Rich Aurilia or Kevin Frandsen at third, Sabean will most likely be unable to resist Crede’s 2006.
  • Juan Rodriguez of the Sun-Sentinel digs up this little tidbit: The Florida Marlins haven’t signed a player to a multi-year contract since December 2005, when they signed Carlos Delgado to a four-year, $55MM contract, and Paul Lo Duca to a three-year, $18MM deal.  One would hope that this trend will end soon enough, and that owner Jeff Loria will open the purse strings for Hanley Ramirez when the time is right.
  • Tyler Kepner of The New York Times explores the relative surprise that Robinson Canó has been considering his draft position and reputation as a prospect, and details how frequently the Yankees almost dealt him before he made the big club.  Canó was nearly dealt for Alex Rodriguez, Carlos Beltrán, and Randy Johnson in different instances.
  • AP Sports Writer Bob Baum explains that Bud Selig isn’t trying to keep Barry Bonds from being signed.  Selig stressed that each club is free to deal with whomever they please.

Delgado MRI May Reveal Mets’ Hole At First

By Michael Glab | March 1, 2008 at 2:59pm CDT

With Carlos Delgado being sent to New York for an MRI on his sore right hip, the Mets may be in need of first base help.

Delgado hurt the same hip toward the end of last season, missing 2 1/2 weeks during the stretch run. The Mets say it’s not serious this time but Delgado is starting to show signs that he’s becoming old before his time. He may not be able to bounce back as quickly as he once did.

Now the Mets might be another potential destination for Scott Hatteberg if Joey Votto shoves him out of Cincinnati.
