Rox Look To Strengthen Bullpen, Bench

By Steve Adams | December 7, 2009 at 4:45am CDT

Rockies manager Jim Tracy doesn't "want to be the organization that pops up every three years or so," according to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post. Renck offers up a look at the needs the Rockies will need to address at this year's Winter Meetings in order to strengthen the club's chances to be perennial contenders:

  • General manager Dan O'Dowd will meet with Rafael Betancourt's representation today. We've heard that Betancourt may accept arbitration from the Rockies, but with the Red Sox and Phillies interested in his services, that may change. O'Dowd says he wants things to work out with Betancourt, but they've identified alternatives in the event that they don't.
  • Colorado would be interested in bringing LaTroy Hawkins back to Coors Field. Hawkins is coming off a strong year with the Astros in which he posted a 2.13 ERA through 63.1 innings, fanning 45 and walking 17. His FIP checked in at a much more pedestrian 3.97, however.
  • The Rockies have requested Justin Duchscherer's medical records and will meet with his agent today.
  • They've inquired on free agent Chad Tracy in an attempt to add a left-handed bat off the bench. Even without Tracy, however, they could still find a suitable backup to Todd Helton in their own clubhouse, as Brad Hawpe is open to spelling Helton from time to time.
  • O'Dowd will keep the team's struggles against left-handers in mind if teams inquire about names like Brad Hawpe and Jorge De La Rosa.
  • O'Dowd says he'll remain open to anything, but the difference between this year and last year is that he's not specifically looking to move some players.

Rockies Rumors: Hawpe, Tracy, Carroll

By Mike Axisa | December 3, 2009 at 3:46pm CDT

Troy E. Renck of The Denver Post has some Rockies rumors for us…

  • GM Dan O'Dowd called Brad Hawpe a "legitimate alternative" that can spell Todd Helton at first base. The team had been looking for a bench player capable of playing both first and third.
  • The Rockies have expressed preliminary interest in free agents Chad Tracy and Jamey Carroll.
  • O'Dowd confirmed that he's not looking to move Ryan Spilborghs.
  • Contrary to reports, the Rockies are not interested in Gregg Zaun, though they still hope to bring Yorvit Torrealba back.
  • Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FoxSports.com say that reports about hard feelings between Jason Marquis and the Rockies about not getting a playoff start are untrue.

Rockies Rumors: Crosby, Betancourt, Street

By Luke Adams 2 | December 2, 2009 at 7:43pm CDT

The Rockies' interest in Bobby Crosby might not amount to anything if there are teams interested in him a starter, according to MLB.com's Thomas Harding. The Rockies would like to sign Crosby as a utilityman, but the Red Sox and other clubs that have been linked to the shortstop might be willing to give him a chance to start, which Crosby would prefer. Here are a few of Harding's other Rockies-related rumors….

  • The team will likely have "internal discussions" about signing Chad Tracy as a bench player.
  • The Rockies won't pursue any free-agent relievers until they see what happens with Rafael Betancourt, who has been offered arbitration and is their top bullpen priority.
  • If they can't retain Betancourt, LaTroy Hawkins could be a target.
  • The club would like to re-sign Yorvit Torrealba, but will have to wait for him to test the market.
  • Long-term contracts for Huston Street and Clint Barmes are another priority. One Rockies official says that it's too early in talks with Street to see how far apart the two sides might be.

Diamondbacks Decline Arb On Free Agents

By Mark Polishuk | December 1, 2009 at 6:31pm CDT

MLB.com's Steve Gilbert tweets that Arizona will not be offering arbitration to free agents Doug Davis, Scott Schoeneweis or Chad Tracy.  Davis (a Type B) is the only ranked free agent of the trio.  Gilbert blogged yesterday that the D-Backs were likely to pass on making Davis an offer since the team didn't want to risk bringing him back in 2010 at a higher salary.

Diamondbacks Decline Chad Tracy’s Option

By Mike Axisa | November 5, 2009 at 1:13pm CDT

The Arizona Republic reports that the Diamondbacks have declined Chad Tracy's $7MM option for 2010, choosing instead to pay him a $1MM buyout.

The 29-year-old Tracy missed a month of the season with a strained oblique, hitting just .236/.306/.389 in 288 plate appearances when he did make it onto the field. Capable of playing first and third base, Tracy's OBP and SLG have each declined for three straight seasons.

D’Backs Talk: Davis, Tracy, Eric Byrnes

By Tim Dierkes | October 6, 2009 at 4:24pm CDT

Diamondbacks GM Josh Byrnes was forthcoming, talking to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic today.  Highlights:

  • Payroll will likely be higher than the season-ending mark of $73MM.  They have about $60MM committed for 2010, assuming Conor Jackson is retained.  GM Josh Byrnes may have $15MM+ to spend.
  • Byrnes has until the December 12th non-tender deadline to decide on Jackson, who must be paid at least $2.44MM if tendered a contract.  Byrnes intends to use that time to gather information, but his comments had a positive vibe.
  • Free agents Doug Davis and Chad Tracy are not expected to return in 2010 (Tracy has a $7MM club option that will certainly be declined).  It'll be interesting to see who the D'Backs acquire to replace Davis.
  • Brandon Allen does not have a lock on the first base job.  Second base will probably be filled internally.
  • Byrnes admitted "the roster crunch on Eric Byrnes is pretty real," implying the could release the outfielder and eat $11MM.

Odds & Ends: Lowe, Tracy, Brewers

By Zachary Links | September 27, 2009 at 10:30am CDT

  • Ken Davidoff of Newsday thinks the Braves will shop Derek Lowe in the offseason.  Lowe is owed $15MM per year through 2012.
  • Despite seeing limited action this year, Chad Tracy will get the start at first base in Arizona's home finale tonight against the Padres, according to Bob McManaman of The Arizona Republic.  This is seen as a symbolic gesture as Arizona could pick up Tracy's $7MM option for 2010 but in all likelihood will buy out his remaining year for $1MM.
  • The Associated Press reports that Ken Macha has discussed his status heading into next year with GM Doug Melvin.  Macha is under contract through 2010 but a losing season has put his job in jeopardy.
  • MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince writes that Jose Veras, who will be arbitration eligible, might be on his way to earning a new contract with Cleveland.  Veras has shined since being called up on September 1st, posting 12 Ks and allowing just one earned run in 9.2 IP.

Odds & Ends: Astros, Tribe, Tracy, Ricciardi

By | September 26, 2009 at 2:14pm CDT

Another hearty batch of links…

  • The Astros have not contacted Red Sox first base coach Tim Bogar about their vacant managerial position, according to the Boston Globe's Adam Kilgore.  He's interested, but too focused on the 2009 season to consider such a major change at this time.
  • MLB.com's Alyson Footer says Bogar is "at the top of everyone's speculation list," for the gig, but the "club isn't tipping [its] hand on anything."
  • Larry Stone of the Seattle Times thinks the Indians' managerial post, assuming Eric Wedge is let go after this season, might fall to former Mariners skipper Mike Hargrove.  Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell is also being mentioned for the job.
  • According to Bruce Pascoe of the Arizona Daily Star, the Diamondbacks aren't likely to pick up Chad Tracy's $7MM option for 2010.  He's played in just 91 games this season and Brandon Allen has already arrived in the major leagues.
  • Bruce Arthur of the National Post believes the Blue Jays have no choice but to fire GM J.P. Ricciardi this winter.  "If Ricciardi's time is not over," Arthur writes, "then it will be nothing short of a betrayal."

ESPN On Qualls, Adrian Gonzalez, Mahay

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2009 at 11:19pm CDT

11:19pm: Olney reports that the Padres and Red Sox had made very little progress in their discussions about Adrian Gonzalez as of 9pm CST.

4:19pm: In regard to the Qualls item below, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick has an update.  His source says the D'Backs are "very unlikely" to trade their closer.

11:58am: All kinds of good stuff from ESPN's Buster Olney (Insider required and recommended).

  • The big news: the Red Sox and Padres talked "at length" about an Adrian Gonzalez trade Wednesday night.  Those discussions are expected to resume today; of course you can expect top prospects to be involved.
  • On the D'Backs front, there has been interest in Doug Davis and Jon Garland.  Jeff Wilson of the Dallas Morning News says the Rangers have spoken to the D'Backs about a deal for starting pitching, but would probably have to unload salary (Hank Blalock?) first.  A D'Backs scout took a look at Rangers reliever Guillermo Moscoso.  However, Arizona is actually considering whether to extend Davis.  Might make sense, with Brandon Webb going under the knife.
  • Olney says there's momentum building toward a Chad Qualls trade, but the closer won't come cheap.  Chad Tracy would be a fourth available D'Back, but Bob McManaman and Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic feel that August trades are more likely for the club.
  • The Royals would like to move the contract of southpaw reliever Ron Mahay (.274/.292/.468 against lefties).  He's got about $1.5MM left.
  • ESPN's Jayson Stark tosses in this nugget: the Marlins made a run at Roy Halladay but balked at an asking price that included Cameron Maybin and Mike Stanton.

Trade Candidates: Corner Infielders

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 6, 2009 at 12:47pm CDT

We’ve heard about Garrett Atkins and Aubrey Huff all year, but plenty of other corner infielders could be trade bait, too. Here’s the list of corner infield trade candidates, ranked from highest 2009 salary to lowest:

  • Troy Glaus – The priciest trade candidate on this list has yet to play in 2009. There have been suggestions that the Cards could move Glaus if he can't play third upon his return.
  • Melvin Mora – With a $9MM salary and a no-trade clause, Mora will be tough to move.
  • Aubrey Huff – He's not hitting as well as he did last year, but has hit well enough. He makes $8MM this year.
  • Adam Dunn – He makes the same amount as Huff, and has $12MM more coming his way in 2010. With 22 homers already, Dunn would be a nice addition a team like the Giants.
  • Adam LaRoche – He earns $7.05MM this year before becoming a free agent.
  • Garrett Atkins – He'll earn $7.05MM as well, a sum that looks more affordable every day, since Atkins is hitting .306/.386/.468 since the beginning of June.
  • Nick Johnson – An affordable option at $5.5MM, this free agent-to-be has an injury history to go along with his .800 OPS.
  • Chad Tracy – The combination of his $4.75MM salary and .354 slugging percentage won't make him appealing to many teams, if any.
  • Jason Giambi – He earns $4MM this year and his team will have to pay him $1.25MM after the season or take on his $6.5MM salary next year. Giambi's been a disappointment at the plate.
  • Jorge Cantu – The Marlins remain just one game behind the Phillies for the division lead, but there have been hints that they would move Cantu if they fall out of it. He makes $3.5MM this year.
  • Russell Branyan – The Mariners are just 3.5 games back of the division lead, but Branyan would be an appealing candidate if he hits the market, especially since he makes just $1.4MM this year.
  • Kevin Kouzmanoff – He makes under $500k this year, but he's hitting poorly and you can't even blame Petco Park, as his OPS is 40 points lower on the road. The Mariners recently had interest.

The Red Sox, Mets, Giants, Reds and Mariners could all look for a boost at one of the corner infield positions.
