Reds Back Off Rolen Deal

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2009 at 4:13pm CDT

4:13pm: ESPN's Peter Gammons says the Reds "backed off a potential deal" for Rolen.  The Reds are actually hoping to move some contracts, and will listen on Bronson Arroyo, David Weathers, Aaron Harang, and Arthur Rhodes.  Plus there's the issue of the Jays not wanting to trade Rolen if they keep Halladay.

2:00pm: CBSSports' Danny Knobler says the Jays would get Edwin Encarnacion and others, if this does get done.  The sticking point appears to be how much of Rolen's remaining $15MM the Jays would assume.

Meanwhile, Bastian (via Twitter) has a source saying all is quiet here.

1:39pm: A Ken Rosenthal/Jon Paul Morosi source says the Reds-Rolen talks are "going nowhere."  The writers suggest a Halladay trade could help move things along.

1:19pm: Via Twitter, MLB.com's Jordan Bastian says his source would not deny the Rolen-Reds talks (hat tip Drunk Jays Fans).

12:34pm: No mention of Alonso from him, but Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun tweets, "Looks like Rolen to Reds has a 'good chance' of getting done."

12:20pm: Joe McDonald of the Providence Journal says the Reds and Jays are talking about a Rolen-Yonder Alonso swap.  Say what?  Alonso, who signed on August 15th of last year, would have to be a player to be named later in the unlikely event he's dealt.

9:07am: The Blue Jays have many trade targets aside from Roy Halladay, so let's collect that information in one post.

Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun says the Twins are still chasing shortstop Marco Scutaro, after Freddy Sanchez landed with the Giants.  Elliott adds that the Reds "met last night to decide to come up with a package to land third baseman Scott Rolen."

Blue Jays, Reds Discussing Rolen

By | July 25, 2009 at 6:08pm CDT

6:08pm: AOL FanHouse's Ed Price tweets that it's possible for the Reds to acquire Rolen, "but a lot would have to happen," according to a source.

3:59pm: According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, a source has indicated that the Blue Jays and Reds are discussing a trade involving third baseman Scott Rolen. As Morosi writes,

"The sides are still trying to determine which players would head to Toronto in the deal, but the source said that third baseman Edwin Encarnacion would be included."

Rolen is enjoying a nice resurgence this season after spending the last several years battling injuries.  As of Saturday afternoon, he's batting .317/.372/.469 with seven home runs and 37 RBI in 322 at-bats.  He is owed $11MM next season and about $4.5MM for the rest of '09. That's a high price for Cinci, but the Reds are quickly falling out of contention, and adding Rolen's veteran presence and Gold Glove defense would help them in their chase of the NL Wild Card.

Jays And Reds Talked; No Rolen Deal Likely

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 10, 2009 at 10:18am CDT

10:18am: Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News says the Reds are not trading for Rolen. The Blue Jays and Reds talked, but the Jays are not interested in Encarnacion and the Reds would have trouble taking on Rolen's contract.

McCoy spoke with a Reds official who says the team has no room for Garrett Atkins.

9:42am: The Reds are interested in hot-hitting third baseman Scott Rolen, according to Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun. They've discussed him internally, scouted him and dangled Edwin Encarnacion to the Blue Jays. Elliott says J.P. Ricciardi would like prospects in return for Rolen, whose contract the Jays wouldn't mind shedding. Rolen's on a 25-game hit streak, with a .330 average and an .876 OPS, so the $16.5MM remaining on his deal before the end of next year is palatable, especially when you consider his strong defense.

Encarnacion is much cheaper than Rolen, but he's hit poorly in the few games he hasn't missed due to wrist problems this year.

Reds Sign Edwin Encarnacion For Two Years

By Tim Dierkes | February 17, 2009 at 10:24am CDT

10:24am: Troy Renck of the Denver Post has details on the $7.6MM deal:

Encarnacion will receive $2MM this season and $4.75MM in 2010 with an $850K signing bonus payable between March 29 and November 2009. Also will get $25K for 600 plate appearances.

9:32am: Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News believes the deal is worth $5MM.

8:30am: According to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Reds agreed to a two-year deal with third baseman Edwin Encarnacion.  The sides had been $1.15MM apart on his ’09 salary.  He’ll still have one arb year (2011) before free agency.

Reds Hoping To Avoid Arb With Encarnacion

By | February 5, 2009 at 5:04pm CDT

According to MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon, the Reds are working to avoid arbitration with third baseman Edwin Encarnacion.

A hearing is scheduled for February 17.  Encarnacion is seeking $3.7MM while the club offered $2.55MM.  The 26-year-old hit .251/.340/.466 last season with 26 home runs and 68 RBI, but his defense has been questioned by some critics.

Reds Rumors: Gonzalez, Wigginton, Encarnacion

By Tim Dierkes | January 30, 2009 at 4:02pm CDT

The latest from John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer, who spoke to Reds GM Walt Jocketty recently…

  • Jocketty is working on bringing some "fringe guys" to camp on minor league deals.  It’s been weeks since he talked to Luis Gonzalez’s agent.  MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon learned of the Reds’ interest in Gonzo yesterday.
  • In reference to Ty Wigginton, Jocketty said, "They’re getting close to desperate stage. But we’re really only looking at bench help."
  • Jocketty isn’t handling the Edwin Encarnacion talks, but he expects to settle.  Encarnacion filed at $3.7MM, the Reds at $2.55MM (midpoint of $3.125MM).

Reds Unlikely For Abreu, Sheets, Oliver Perez

By Tim Dierkes | January 19, 2009 at 4:48pm CDT

John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer talked to Reds GM Walt Jocketty, who is currently focused on hammering out one-year deals for arbitration-eligible players David Weathers and Edwin Encarnacion.

Fay inquired about free agents such as Bobby Abreu, Ben Sheets, and Oliver Perez.  Jocketty indicated that all three are out of the Reds’ price range.

Reds Rumors: Swisher, Nady, Baldelli

By Cork Gaines | January 7, 2009 at 5:13pm CDT

John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer has a few notes from Walt Jocketty…

  • Jocketty has talked with Brian Cashman of the Yankees "a lot" and that the Yankees are looking to move either Nick Swisher or Xavier Nady.
  • The Reds remain interested in Rocco Baldelli, but "probably not" Ty Wigginton, noting that the Reds plan on keeping Edwin Encarnacion.
  • The Reds did not sign Jerry Hairston Jr to be the everyday shortstop, noting that Alex Gonzalez is progressing well from his injury.

C. Trent Rosecrans of AM1530 also spoke with Jocketty and has these notes to add…

  • Jocketty says the Reds are not being handcuffed by the economy.
  • Jocketty said that he had spoken with the Yankees "a couple of weeks ago" but not recently.
  • Jocketty spoke with Baldelli’s agent today speculating that Baldelli may prefer to stay in the American League.
  • Jocketty would be fine going to camp with the group in place but that the Reds are still looking to upgrade the bench, preferably adding a player with some power.

Cork Gaines writes for RaysIndex.com and can be reached here.

More Jocketty Talk On The Reds

By Ben Jones | December 27, 2008 at 7:37pm CDT

C. Trent Rosecrans of TheLotD.com also talked with Cincinnati Reds general manager Walt Jocketty today. Here are some conversation highlights:

  • The Reds are still talking to Jerry Hairston Jr. to play left field. “We’re still trying to get Hairston,” Jocketty told Rosecrans. “We’ll have a different look on our club, but we still have guys like (Joey) Votto, (Jay) Bruce, (Brandon) Phillips, (Edwin) Encarnacion and even (Ramon) Hernandez with power.”
  • Jocketty hasn’t spoken with Pat Burrell in awhile. They are holding back on that one right now.
  • Health remains a serious issue with Rocco Baldelli, Jocketty said.
  • The Reds have been in discussion with the New York Yankees about their extra outfielders, but no deals are close.
  • No Barry Bonds; no Sammy Sosa.

Reds Interested In Taveras, Wigginton, Miles

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 13, 2008 at 12:59pm CDT

Reds GM Walk Jocketty told MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon that he’s interested in three players who became free agents after being non-tendered by their former clubs: Willy Taveras, Ty Wigginton and Aaron Miles.

Jocketty said Taveras could play in center field, Wigginton’s a backup in case they don’t get their first choice of outfielders and Miles could work if the Reds don’t re-sign Jerry Hairston.

Wigginton played in the outfield 30 times for the Astros this year, but John Fay heard from Jocketty that a Wigginton deal could move Edwin Encarnacion to left field.
