Gary Sheffield

Odds And Ends: Zambrano, Sheffield, Rockies

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 21, 2009 at 9:06am CDT

Links for the morning…

  • Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun-Times believes the Cubs need Carlos Zambrano, even if he hasn't endeared himself to everyone.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post suspects that baseball is about to retire Gary Sheffield. After all, it will be hard for a "41-year-old, oft-injured malcontent" to find work.
  • Bruce Jenkins of the San Francisco Chronicle looks at the Rockies and sees a team without glaring weaknesses.
  • Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times lists the best and worst free agent signings the Cubs have made since 2000.
  • Sure, the Yankees and Red Sox are big spenders, but, as this Boston Globe piece shows, they develop lots of talent, too.

Sheffield Doesn’t Expect To End Year With Mets

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 19, 2009 at 10:02am CDT

Gary Sheffield has already been claimed on waivers and pulled back by the Mets. If they put him on waivers again, they wouldn't be able to prevent teams from claiming him for nothing and clubs would presumably pick up the 40-year-old outfielder and his .856 OPS. Still, Sheffield told Larry Brooks of the New York Post that he doesn't expect to finish the season in New York.

"I do not think I will be here," Sheffield said. "But if I am sent to a team that I don't want to play for, I would go home."

Sheffield said he would prefer to join a lineup full of productive hitters and doesn't want to have to carry a team's offense. Brooks says the Marlins and Rangers have interest in adding a right-handed bat, but the Mets would have to put him on waivers first.

Sheffield And Feliciano Claimed, Pulled Back

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 12, 2009 at 2:24pm CDT

ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports that Gary Sheffield and Pedro Feliciano were claimed on waivers by unknown teams, only to be pulled back by the Mets. Neither player can now be traded, but it's unknown whether the Mets were seriously considering moving either one.

Heyman On White Sox, Mets, Bay, Holliday

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 12, 2009 at 12:36pm CDT

Jon Heyman of SI.com says the Blue Jays asked for a player currently on the White Sox in exchange for Alex Rios before asking for a prospect and eventually settling for salary relief. Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi didn't get MLB talent back for his right fielder, but executives around the league say they understand the thought process behind the trade. Here are the rest of Heyman's rumors:

  • One GM says Rios would be a good gamble at $30-35MM, but the $60MM remaining on his deal is too much.
  • White Sox GM Kenny WIlliams says he's fully confident that Jake Peavy will transition into the American League and help the White Sox down the stretch.
  • It's uncertain whether Gary Sheffield and Pedro Feliciano were claimed off waivers. Two AL teams were interested in Sheffield before his hamstring injuries popped up.
  • Teams are claiming more cheap, young players than ever.
  • The Red Sox would love Marco Scutaro, but aren't likely to get the chance to acquire him since teams with worse records would presumably claim him.
  • Heyman hears that Matt Holliday could press for a no-trade clause and may not take the biggest deal he sees as a free agent this offseason.
  • Some estimate that Jason Bay could make about $60MM over four years when he hits free agency after the season.
  • The Nats could name a new GM by the end of the month. Acting GM Mike Rizzo is receiving praise around the league for acquiring Nyjer Morgan.
  • Most execs believe John Smoltz is more likely to land in the NL.

Sheffield Doesn’t Want To Be Traded

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 11, 2009 at 10:56am CDT

Gary Sheffield told the Associated Press that he would prefer not to be traded, but suggested that could change, depending on where the Mets try to deal him.

"It might be a team that I would be happy about it," Sheffield said. "Another team, I might not be happy about it."

Sheffield can block trades to ten teams under his contract, which expires after the season. The Mets are paying Sheffield $400k of his salary this year, while the Tigers are responsible for the remaining $13.6MM.

Heyman On August Trades

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 3, 2009 at 1:32pm CDT

Executives tell Jon Heyman of SI.com that we saw the "softest deadline ever" last week because there's still the possibility for trades this month. Here's an explanation of how trades can occur after the deadline and here are the players Heyman deems likely to clear waivers (player who clear waivers may be traded):

  • Bronson Arroyo, Adam Dunn, Jose Guillen, Aaron Harang, Adrian Beltre, Aubrey Huff, Jason Giambi, Melvin Mora, Miguel Batista, Juan Cruz, Ty Wigginton, Ron Mahay, Willie Bloomquist, Lyle Overbay, Willy Taveras.

Some players who could clear waivers:

  • Jon Garland, Doug Davis, Gil Meche, Alex Rios, Carl Pavano, Mark Hendrickson, Jhonny Peralta, Jamey Carroll, Ron Villone.

And some players who probably won't clear waivers, but who could be dealt to a claiming team:

  • Roy Halladay, Felix Hernandez, Heath Bell, Adrian Gonzalez, Marco Scutaro, Chad Qualls, Michael Wuertz, Brian Bannister, Josh Willingham, Gary Sheffield, David Eckstein, Jason Frasor, Mark Teahen.

Odds & Ends: Sheffield, Washburn, Pirates, Irabu

By Mike Axisa | July 26, 2009 at 10:47am CDT

Some links to start your Sunday morning off right…

  • MLB.com's Anthony DiComo says not to assume Gary Sheffield will be traded. Sheff is currently on the disabled list, but may have been attractive to contenders in need of a bat because he can still produce (.286-.388-.481 in 245 PA) and the Tigers are paying pretty much his entire salary.
  • Bob Klapisch of The Bergen Record mentions in this piece that the Mariners reportedly asked the Yankees for outfielders Melky Cabrera and Brett Gardner in exchange for Jarrod Washburn.
  • Pirates owner Bob Nutting says that finances are not dictating moves, according to Dejan Kovacevic of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "There is no pressure on Neal to shed any payroll dollars, from me or anyone else. Every decision made will be a baseball decision, not a financial one. Any money saved will remain committed to the baseball operations budget to be used as they see fit."
  • Meanwhile, Chuck Finder of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Bucs are continuing to negotiate with some of their higher profile unsigned draft picks.
  • Patrick at NPB Tracker passes along a report that Hideki Irabu is looking to continue his comeback in Japan. Irabu signed with the Long Beach Armada of the independent Golden League back in April, and has a respectable 3.87 ERA in eight starts.
  • David Mayo of Mlive.com says that standing pat might be the Tigers best option at the upcoming trade deadline.
  • Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald writes about the Marlins' cache of impressive young position players in their farm sytem.
  • With teams unlikely to risk taking on salaries in a bad economy, we may see more waiver trades in August than usual, writes Pat Mitsch of The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Rays Rumors: Pedro, Sheffield

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 22, 2009 at 11:09am CDT

Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times provided a pair of quick but interesting Rays rumors on the weekend:

  • The Rays have no interest in Pedro Martinez as a starter. Here's a rundown of some other teams rumored to be interested in Pedro.
  • Gary Sheffield wants to play two more seasons and retire with the Rays. Sheffield's 40 and the market for aging DH types has really slowed, but he does have an OPS of .876. The Rays already have Pat Burrell next year- would they have any interest in Sheffield?

Odds & Ends: Glavine, Thorman, Sheffield

By Tim Dierkes | April 28, 2009 at 11:59am CDT

Links for Tuesday…

  • Chat today, 2pm CST.
  • ESPN's Buster Olney talked to Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi, who has no plans to pursue the available free agent pitchers.
  • MLB.com's Mark Bowman has the latest on Tom Glavine's shoulder rehab.  Glavine seems more optimistic than when he last addressed the media.
  • Jamey Newberg says the Rangers released first baseman Scott Thorman after 32 Triple A at-bats.
  • Steve Lombardi at WasWatching.com did a Q&A with Tyler Kepner of the New York Times.
  • Jorge Says No! creates a roster of the worst free agent contracts of 2000-04.
  • Benjamin Kabak of River Ave. Blues says the Gary Sheffield-Tigers trade was still a win for the Yankees even though the prospects haven't panned out.
  • Over at RotoAuthority, I talked about three pitchers I drafted but already gave up on.

Odds & Ends: Lackey, Sheffield, Luis Gonzalez

By Tim Dierkes | April 9, 2009 at 9:37am CDT

Links for Thursday…

  • Scot Gregor of the Daily Herald learned that while White Sox GM Ken Williams seeks a leadoff hitter, he does not have interest in Juan Pierre or Gary Matthews Jr.
  • In an article yesterday, MLB.com's Lyle Spencer said all is quiet on the John Lackey extension front.  Angels GM Tony Reagins said Lackey's initial Opening Day deadline was never a factor for the team.
  • Murray Chass says Gary Sheffield's clubhouse presence is a positive.
  • Luis Gonzalez, a free agent, hopes to play in 2009.  But when he retires, he'll do so as a Diamondback according to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert.
  • MLB.com's Joe Frisaro wrote in praise of Florida starter Josh Johnson.
  • MLB.com's Corey Brock says the Padres introduced Tom Garfinkel as the new president and chief operating officer in charge of non-baseball operations.
  • I wrote about Blue Jays starter David Purcey over at RotoAuthority.
