Mets To Explore Trade For Closer

By Tim Dierkes | October 28, 2008 at 8:52am CDT

Ken Davidoff of Newsday has a new article up discussing possibilities for the Mets’ closer vacancy.  He says the Mets will check in on free agents Francisco Rodriguez and Brian Fuentes, but remain wary of the price.  I’m wondering if K-Rod will have to back off the five year demand if he wants to get multiple serious bidders.  Davidoff says the Mets feel that they have the minor league depth to swing a trade for a closer rather than buy one.

Davidoff goes on to speculate that the Mets could look at J.J. Putz, Huston Street, George Sherrill, Joakim Soria, and Kevin Gregg.  Gregg would be the easiest to acquire.  Not sure why Soria is mentioned here.  The Mets had several young players emerge this year who weren’t necessarily highly touted (Dan Murphy, for example).  Davidoff says the Mets feel they have more such hidden gems to use as trade chips.

Davidoff also tosses out two more free agent possibilities: Jeremy Affeldt and Chad Cordero.  Affeldt is starting to generate buzz as a more affordable closing candidate, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Indians get involved.

Huff, Millar, Payton Clear Waivers

By Tim Dierkes | August 14, 2008 at 9:22pm CDT

According to Dan Connolly and Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, four Orioles players have cleared waivers: Aubrey Huff, Jay Payton, Kevin Millar, and Jamie Walker.  Walker we already knew about.  The Orioles can now trade any of the four to any team.

I had guessed that Huff would not clear waivers, on account of his .910 OPS (10th in the AL).  However, the $10.1MM owed to Huff through ’09 proved too much for the other 29 teams.  His limited defensive abilities probably also played a role.

The Sun also mentioned that George Sherrill was claimed by an AL team and pulled back, which was expected.

Heyman’s Latest: Lucchino, Manny, Rangers

By Tim Dierkes | August 11, 2008 at 4:02pm CDT

I wanted to let the Dunn trade cool off a bit before diving into Jon Heyman’s latest.

  • Heyman "people in high places in baseball" who believe Red Sox president/CEO Larry Lucchino might leave after the season, possibly for the Dodgers.  He’s still butting heads with Theo Epstein apparently.
  • Heyman doesn’t buy the idea that Scott Boras orchestrated Manny Ramirez’s departure from Boston.  He also doesn’t buy the idea of Ramirez playing in New York.
  • Nolan Ryan would like Tom Hicks to sell the Rangers to him, but Hicks has shown no willingness to do so.
  • Players such as George Sherrill, Brian Fuentes, and Raul Ibanez are not expected to clear waivers.  No surprise there.

Mets In Holding Pattern

By Tim Dierkes | July 31, 2008 at 8:39am CDT

8:39am: SI.com’s Jon Heyman says the Mets have "kicked around" the idea of acquiring Ian Snell from the Pirates and using him in relief for the rest of the year.  Snell is signed through 2010 with club options for ’11 and ’12.  It’s tough to see the Bucs moving him, even in an off year.

8:13am: According to David Lennon of Newsday, the Mets are not finding a deal to their liking for a reliever or outfielder.  They’ve put pretty much all of their good prospects off-limits – Fernando Martinez, Jon Niese, Eddie Kunz or Bobby Parnell.

Players such as Raul Ibanez, Brian Fuentes, George Sherrill, and J.J. Putz have all been on the radar.  But the Mets just don’t like the prices.  Lennon says they still might move Scott Schoeneweis though.

Sherrill Unavailable?

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2008 at 1:35pm CDT

SI.com’s Jon Heyman believes Orioles closer George Sherrill might be off the market, as Andy MacPhail was not able to snag a quality young shortstop for him.  Heyman believes Huston Street may be the only closer left on the market, if he even is.

Tigers Unlikely To Acquire Reliever

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2008 at 9:19am CDT

Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press says the Tigers aren’t liking the market price for relief help.  The chances of Dave Dombrowski adding a top guy like George Sherrill are slim to none.  (By the way, if Sherrill has another outing like last night his ERA will be approaching 5.00.)

Morosi says picking up a cheap unwanted reliever like Brian Wolfe or LaTroy Hawkins is plausible, but promoting from within is even more likely.  If the Tigers are contending in September might we see Ryan Perry as the first ’08 draft pick to reach the bigs?

Odds and Ends: Street, Zaun, Guardado, Blalock

By Tim Dierkes | July 29, 2008 at 8:38pm CDT

Let’s round up some odds and ends for a rumor-packed day.

  • The Reds had a scout at a recent Rangers-A’s game; they may have been eyeing a Texas catcher.
  • Billy Beane is still fielding offers for Huston Street; Jon Heyman mentions the same teams we’ve heard in the past.
  • Ed Wade told Miguel Tejada he’s staying put.
  • Gregg Zaun would welcome a trade.  GM J.P. Ricciardi responded by saying "someone has to want you."  The Marlins could make sense; their catcher hunt may hinge on Matt Treanor’s decision whether to have surgery.
  • John Maine has a mild rotator cuff strain.  I wonder if this will affect the chances of long-term extension talks with Maine.  Anyway, it’d make sense to bring in some rotation insurance.
  • Geoff Baker says the Brewers, Marlins, and Tigers are eyeing Eddie Guardado.
  • Hank Blalock is on the DL and off the trade market.
  • Ken Davidoff believes the Mets are scouting George Sherrill.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Tejada, Laird, Renteria, Sherrill

By Tim Dierkes | July 29, 2008 at 1:07pm CDT

New one from Ken Rosenthal…

  • The Padres will ask Greg Maddux again to consider accepting a trade to a team not located on the West Coast.  The Dodgers haven’t shown interest.
  • One big league source told Rosenthal that the Astros have had "absolutely no dialogue" about Miguel Tejada.
  • The Marlins are the most aggressive suitor for Gerald Laird.  The Brewers, Reds, and Yankees are also in on the Rangers’ catcher.  Rosenthal points out a Doug Melvin connection – Melvin acquired Laird as the Rangers’ GM back in ’02.  [UPDATE: Rangers guru Jamey Newberg tells me that it was actually John Hart and Grady Fuson who acquired Laird in ’02, not Melvin.]  The Rangers continue to target young starting pitching in return.
  • Looks like speculation, but Rosenthal wonders whether the Cardinals would consider re-acquiring Edgar Renteria.
  • So far the Orioles have had no success trying to acquire shortstops like Erick Aybar, Alcides Escobar, and Reid Brignac for George Sherrill.

Red Sox Eyeing Relief Options

By Tim Dierkes | July 29, 2008 at 12:52pm CDT

12:51pm: MLB.com’s Jim Molony says Brocail, Geary, and Jose Valverde aren’t going anywhere since the Astros are actually looking to add to their ’pen.

11:21am: ESPN’s Peter Gammons says the Red Sox have been discussing Doug Brocail with the Astros.

9:57am: Boston’s top priority at the trade deadline seems to be relief help, if anything.  They were linked to several relievers this morning.

Sean McAdam of the Providence Journal says the Sox "are interested again and expect expect to get back to the Royals on Ron Mahay."  Mahay is generally believed to be unavailable.

Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald has the Red Sox eyeing Geoff Geary, Brian Fuentes, George Sherrill, and Will Ohman.  Ohman seems the likeliest candidate, though they may have competition for him in the division-rival Rays.

Marlins Looking For Catcher, Reliever

By Tim Dierkes | July 29, 2008 at 8:44am CDT

The NL East is a three-team race, with the Mets, Phillies, and Marlins all within a game of each other.  Who’d have thought the Marlins would be contending after trading Miguel Cabrera?

According to Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Marlins have intensified their search for a catcher.  The targets: Bengie Molina, Ramon Hernandez, Gerald Laird, and Ryan Doumit.  Molina and Hernandez are the pricey options.  Doumit would be especially tough to pry loose; he has a .937 OPS this year as a 27 year-old.

MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro wonders if Miguel Olivo, Gregg Zaun, and Paul Lo Duca could also enter the mix.  He says it could even be a three-way possibility where the Jays acquire Olivo and move him to Florida.

The Marlins are also hunting for a lefty reliever, with Arthur Rhodes, Jack Taschner, John Grabow, Eddie Guardado, George Sherrill, Will Ohman, and Alan Embree all considered candidates.  Dejan Kovacevic rattled off five suitors for Grabow this morning, the Marlins not among them.  Also, the Marlins’ interest in Guardado is light.  The Giants and Mariners both scouted the Marlins recently, and Berardino wonders if Mike Jacobs would interest them.

Berardino says acquiring a catcher and reliever in one trade would be ideal.  The one Marlins minor leaguer considered off-limits is Sean West.
