Rockies Rumors: Fuentes, Street, Rusch, Podsednik

By Tim Dierkes | November 13, 2008 at 12:37pm CDT

MLB.com’s Thomas Harding has the latest on the Rockies, here and here.

  • The Rockies will offer arbitration to Brian Fuentes, who is a Type A free agent.  Obviously it’s all about the two draft picks, as Fuentes will decline.  He’ll probably sign with a team with an unprotected first-round pick, too.
  • Harding says the Rockies are already receiving calls on Huston Street.  ESPN’s Buster Olney says Dan O’Dowd is telling other GMs he won’t trade Street, but some believe it’s posturing.
  • O’Dowd backed off a bit on the idea of re-signing Glendon Rusch and Scott Podsednik, saying he wants to make sure there’s a role for them in Colorado.
  • The Rockies won’t be diving in on any big-name free agent pitchers.  They’ll either stand pat or pursue trades.
  • O’Dowd called the Reds trade rumors "comical."  The Rockies, by the way, are apparently not interested in Homer Bailey.

Rockies Talking With Glendon Rusch

By Tim Dierkes | October 24, 2008 at 9:28am CDT

According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Rockies have begun preliminary discussions with free agent-eligible pitcher Glendon Rusch.

Rusch, 34 in November, posted a 5.16 ERA in 83.2 innings with the Padres and Rockies this year.  His peripheral numbers were respectable, and he held lefties to a .257/.261/.376 line.  Rusch missed all of the ’07 season due to a blood clot in his lung.

Rockies Rumors: Atkins, Holliday, Barmes

By Tim Dierkes | September 29, 2008 at 9:25am CDT

Let’s see what we can find in three new columns from Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post today.

  • I wrote last week that the Rockies would come in a bit under $80MM after arbitration raises.  Renck pegs it around $75MM.
  • The team’s plan is to shop Garrett Atkins for a frontline starter.  If the interest is not there (why would it be?), they could switch to Matt Holliday.  Renck ponders Matt Cain and a prospect to Colorado, but that is a lot to give up for one year of Holliday.  Plus the Giants are not looking to add an outfielder.
  • Dave Krieger of the Rocky Mountain News analyzes whether the Rockies could afford to re-sign Holliday.  He believes they could, but doesn’t expect them to go past five years.
  • Renck sees Clint Barmes as the starting second baseman heading into ’09.  Barmes could earn around $1.7MM as a first-time arbitration player.
  • Manager Clint Hurdle admitted his starters are more like #2-5s, so it’d be perfect to add a #1 and push them all back.  #1 starters are hard to come by, of course.
  • Yorvit Torrealba isn’t happy as a backup but the Rockies aren’t looking to trade him.  Meanwhile Willy Taveras is a non-tender candidate.
  • The Rockies hope to re-sign free agent Glendon Rusch.

Odds And Ends: Duncan, Mather, Huntington, Trachsel, Rusch

By Joe Pawlikowski | May 31, 2008 at 12:36pm CDT

A few notes to wrap up what I’ve come across this Saturday:

  • The Hardball Times has an interview with Pirates GM Neal Huntington. It’s plenty long. He talks about the dynamics in dealing with his former team, the Cleveland Indians.
  • Steve Trachsel might be on his way out with the Orioles. Tough to argue against that move. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the O’s are in the cellar, and might not climb out for the rest of 2008.
  • Chris Duncan down, Joe Mather up. Could Mather be the piece that rounds out a powerful outfield? Or could he be trade bait to bring back, say, a second baseman?
  • Glendon Rusch is back in the majors, having been recalled by the Rockies.

Posted by Joe Pawlikowski, who writes for River Ave. Blues, a Yankees blog, and can be reached here.

Rockies Sign Glendon Rusch

By Tim Dierkes | May 17, 2008 at 12:29am CDT

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Rockies have signed lefty Glendon Rusch to a minor league deal.  Rusch missed all of the 2007 season due to a blood clot in his lung.  He struggled with his control in 19.2 innings with the Padres this year.

Rusch joins some familiar names in the Sky Sox (Triple A) rotation: John Koronka, Josh Towers, Valerio De Los Santos, and Franklin Morales.  It looks like Cedrick Bowers has replaced Victor Zambrano in that rotation.

Renck also wonders whether the Rockies and Blue Jays could be a match given Colorado’s outfield depth.

Odds And Ends: Rusch, Griffey, Myers, Brewers

By Cork Gaines | May 15, 2008 at 4:31pm CDT

A few more notes for your ogling…

  • This morning we told you that Glendon Rusch declined his assignment to AAA and chose to become a free agent. Troy E. Renck says that the Rockies are already expressing interest in the lefty.
  • Brewers owner Mark Attanasio has given Doug Melvin permission to trade for a starting pitcher noting that there is enough flexibility in the payroll to take on another contract. However, Attanasio also indicated that it was too early to explore those possibilities.
  • The Delaware News Journal takes a look at this past offseason’s crop of free agent starting pitchers and how they are performing so far in ’08. They wonder if any of those arms would have been a better option for the Phillies rotation than moving Brett Myers back from the bullpen.
  • Doug Harris says that the smart move for the Reds is trading Ken Griffey Jr, noting that if they are waiting for him to hit his 600th home run, they could be in for a long wait.

Odds & Ends: Padres, Maddux, Anthony Reyes

By Nat Boyle | May 11, 2008 at 12:03pm CDT

A few Odds & Ends with a San Diego focus:

  • Tom Krasovic of the Union Tribune notes that the Padres are close to completing a trade for a reliever with "good stuff" according to Kevin Towers.  It does not say who it is, but it should be someone better than LHPs Joe Thatcher, who would be sent down, and Glendon Rusch, who was just outrighted yesterday.  Rusch has 3 days to accept his assignment.  He most likely will as he signed a minor league deal after missing all of ’07.  Stay tuned to see who the Padres acquire.  Any guesses?
  • "If [Anthony] Reyes enjoys success as a major-league pitcher, it will likely occur elsewhere," writes Joe Stauss of the St. Louis Dispatch.  This is old news – two years old actually, if you go back to a March ’06 MLBTR post.  We’re just waiting for Cards GM John Mozeliak to lower his price…
  • Tim Sullivan brings us a quote from Jake Peavy, "He can help somebody. It sucks that this is probably the last year of his career and he’s got to sit here and be a part of this and have (this be) the last thing he remembers in baseball — if this thing doesn’t turn."  Sullivan seems to think he could net a couple prospects in a trade, which seems reasonable.  Maddux can certainly reel in some ticket sales, if nothing else – I would love to watch the Professor cap off his legend with my team.

Odds and Ends: Barrett, Koufax, Santana

By Tim Dierkes | December 19, 2007 at 9:53pm CDT

A few notes from this evening…

  • Michael Barrett and the Padres avoided arbitration, arriving at a $3.5MM deal.  A little less than I expected given his $4.6MM salary in ’07.  If some team acquires Barrett on the cheap he could bounce back if he’s comfortable.  Wasn’t long ago he was one of the better-hitting catchers in the game.  Is there even a slight chance he wouldn’t embarrass himself back at the hot corner?
  • Great ShysterBall post in reference to Curt Schilling’s attempt to call out Roger Clemens.
  • Sandy Koufax did not do steroids.
  • Derrick Goold looks at how David Eckstein ended up leaving the Cardinals despite his desire to stay.
  • LENIII says it’s possible nothing has happened on the Johan Santana front since the Meetings ended.  Neal also names Kris Benson as a pitcher on the Twins’ radar.  They were one of many teams watching his recent session.  Plus they were eyeing Glendon Rusch before he signed with the Padres.

Astros Looking At Rusch, Jennings

By Tim Dierkes | December 17, 2007 at 7:50pm CDT

UPDATE, 12-17-07 at 7:50pm: Rusch’s agency verified to my via email that he became a Padre as of Friday.

FROM 12-17-07 at 3:39pm:

The Houston Chronicle’s Brian McTaggart notes the Astros’ interest in starters Glendon Rusch and Jason Jennings.

  • Wait a minute, you’re saying, didn’t Tim Brown report on Friday that Rusch signed a minor-league deal with San Diego?  Indeed he did.  However, Tag says he hasn’t signed yet and Houston still has an offer on the table.
  • The Astros would like to get Jennings back on a one-year, incentivized deal.  Jennings wants two years, despite his lost ’07.  Not sure if anyone will be open to that.  Maybe one year with a club option.
  • It’s been reported previously that the Astros were one of the teams contacting free agent Mark Prior.

Padres Sign Glendon Rusch

By Tim Dierkes | December 14, 2007 at 4:19pm CDT

A small signing this evening, as the Padres inked 33 year-old southpaw Glendon Rusch to a minor-league deal.  He missed the entire ’07 season due to a blood clot.

Add this to the recent Shawn Estes signing, and I wonder whether the Padres are content with their depth for the fifth starter spot.  They’ve also got Clay Hensley and Justin Germano on the roster to compete for that job.  My guess is that this means the Padres won’t pursue Mark Prior aggressively.
