Pirates Acquire Josh Walker From Mets

The Pirates announced the acquisition of left-hander Josh Walker from the Mets for rookie ball pitcher Nicolas Carreno. The Mets designated the lefty for assignment last week. The Bucs had an open 40-man spot and didn’t need to make a corresponding move.

Walker, 29, spent just over a year on the Mets’ 40-man roster. He was selected in May of 2023 and spent most of the time until his DFA on optional assignment. To this point, he has 22 1/3 major league innings on his ledger, having allowed 6.45 earned runs per nine. He has a 22.3% strikeout rate, 11.7% walk rate and 36.8% ground ball rate so far.

As if often the case, the minor league work has been more impressive. Between last year and this year, he has a 2.33 ERA in 58 innings at the Triple-A level. His 13.8% walk rate there is certainly high but he’s also punched out 32.1% of batters faced.

The lefty can still be optioned for the rest of this year and one additional season, so the Bucs are bolstering their left-handed relief depth. They currently have Aroldis Chapman and Jalen Beeks as their southpaws in the big league bullpen but both are impending free agents. As is Ryan Borucki, who is on the injured list. Walker has less than a year of service time and could be a long-term piece if he hangs onto his roster spot.

The 18-year-old Carreno has started eight games in the Dominican Summer League this season. He’s a 5’10” left-hander out of Venezuela.

Mets Designate Josh Walker For Assignment

The Mets designated lefty reliever Josh Walker for assignment, tweets Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. New York needed to open a spot on the 40-man roster after acquiring Ryne Stanek this evening.

Walker has been an up-and-down bullpen piece since New York first selected his contract last May. He tossed 10 innings last year and has worked 12 1/3 frames at the big league level this season. Walker owns a 6.45 earned run average in that rather limited sample. He has a roughly league average 22.3% strikeout percentage with an elevated 11.7% walk rate.

The Mets drafted Walker in the 37th round of the 2017 draft out of the University of New Haven. It was very rare to find an MLB contributor that late — the draft has since been shortened to 20 rounds — but Walker pitched his way there with solid minor league numbers. He has a career 3.85 mark over parts of seven minor league campaigns. That includes a 2.83 ERA across 28 2/3 innings at Triple-A Syracuse this season, though he has walked an alarming 16.7% of opposing hitters in the process.

New York can try to trade Walker before next Tuesday’s deadline. They’ll otherwise need to put him on waivers. He’s in his second minor league option year, meaning another team could keep him in the minors if they’re willing to add him to the 40-man roster. Walker has never been outrighted and has less than three years of big league service, so he would not be able to elect free agency if he gets through waivers unclaimed.

Mets Place Edwin Díaz On Injured List With Shoulder Impingement

The Mets announced today that right-hander Edwin Díaz has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder impingement. Left-hander Josh Walker has been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse as the corresponding move.

It’s been a trying time for Díaz, to say the least. He missed all of 2023 after tearing the right patellar tendon in his right knee during the World Baseball Classic. He and the Mets were undoubtedly hoping for him to be healthy and back in form this year, but it hasn’t played out that way.

He has pitched 20 innings for the Mets this year, allowing 12 earned runs, a rate of 5.40 per nine. His 35.3% strikeout rate is still quite strong but a big drop from the absurd 50.2% rate he had in 2022. He’s allowed five home runs already this year, almost as many as the eight combined homers he allowed in the three seasons from 2020 to 2022. That’s why his 4.58 FIP and 2.27 SIERA are far apart, as the former assigns home runs as the fault of the pitcher whereas the latter normalizes home run rate.

Perhaps this year’s struggles have been a small sample blip caused by a clustering of some home runs, but Díaz won’t have a chance to even things out for a while. Whether the shoulder issue has been bothering him for a while or just recently cropped up isn’t known. The club also hasn’t provided any information about how long they expect the righty to be out, with the IL placement coming just minutes before today’s game.

For now, the Mets will have to proceed without Díaz in their bullpen mix for the next couple of weeks at least. That could leave Adam Ottavino taking over the closer’s role, with pitchers like Jake Diekman, Jorge López and Reed Garrett in line for setup work.

In the long term, the Mets will obviously be motivated to getting Díaz back on track. He signed a five-year, $102MM deal going into the 2023 season and is therefore going to be a part of the club’s plans through 2027, with a club option for 2028 as well. Díaz will have the opportunity to opt-out after 2025 and 2026, though his health and performance would have to trend in a better direction between now and then for that to be a consideration.

Prior to missing the 2023 season, Díaz was one of the most dominant relievers in the sport. At the time, he re-signed with the Mets, he had a 2.93 ERA in 399 1/3 innings. That included a 2022 campaign in which he posted a 1.31 ERA with a 50.2% strikeout rate, 7.7% walk rate and 46.9% ground ball rate.

Mets Select Danny Young

The Mets announced this morning that they’ve selected the contract of left-hander Danny Young. The club had space open on its 40-man roster, so no corresponding 40-man move was necessary. That being said, the team announced that lefty Josh Walker had been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse to make room for Young on the active roster.

Young, 30 next month, was an eighth-round pick by the Blue Jays in the 2015 draft but did not make his big league debut until 2022 as a member of the Mariners. He made two appearances with Seattle that year but struggled to a 7.36 ERA with a 5.57 FIP in 3 2/3 frames before being designated for assignment by the club in August of that year. Young was promptly claimed off waivers by the Braves and posted 2 2/3 scoreless frames before once again being designated for assignment.

This time, Young passed through waivers successful and remained with the Braves organization until he was selected back to the roster the following April. The lefty made eight appearances for the Braves in 2023, pitching to a strong 1.08 ERA in 8 1/3 innings of work. Young struck out a strong 31.4% of batters faced and posted a solid 2.42 FIP with the club but nonetheless found himself released by the club following a season-ending injury, though the club promptly re-signed him to a minor league deal to allow him to rehab with the organization.

Young returned to free agency in November and found a minor league pact with the Mets shortly after the New Year. He’s once again impressed in six appearances at the Triple-A level for the club’s affiliate in Syracuse, posting a 1.13 ERA in eight innings while striking out a whopping 37.5% of batters faced. If Young is able to maintain the production he’s show in limited bursts since joining the Braves organization a year and a half ago, he’ll be a major asset to the Mets bullpen as a lefty option alongside Jake Diekman while veteran set-up man Brooks Raley is on the injured list.

Making space for Young on the club’s active roster is Walker, who made his big league debut with the Mets last year. The club’s 37th-round pick in the 2017 draft struggled to an 8.10 ERA in 10 innings of work last year but looked solid in his three appearances for the club in 2024, striking out three on one hit and one walk across three scoreless frames. Walker now figures to return to the Triple-A level for the time being, where he’ll likely act as a potential next man up for the club’s bullpen alongside the likes of Shintaro Fujinami and Cole Sulser.

Mets Designate Michael Tonkin For Assignment

The Mets have designated right-hander Michael Tonkin for assignment and optioned righty Grant Hartwig to Triple-A Syracuse, per a team announcement. It’s the second time they’ve designated Tonkin for assignment within the season’s first three and a half weeks. The Mets traded him to the Twins for cash last time, only to claim him back off waivers from Minnesota late last week when the Twins also designated him. The roster spots for Tonkin and Hartwig will go to right-hander Sean Reid-Foley and lefty Josh Walker. Reid-Foley is returning from the 15-day IL, while Walker is being recalled from Syracuse.

Tonkin’s second Mets stint last only two appearances and three innings. The 33-year-old righty pitched both Saturday and Sunday, allowing a pair of runs over three innings. He’s logged nine innings in the majors this season, yielding six earned runs (plus another six unearned) on 10 hits, four walks and four hit batters with 11 strikeouts.

Tonkin spent the 2023 season in the Braves’ bullpen, logging a 4.28 ERA, 24.2% strikeout rate and 9.1% walk rate in 80 innings. That set a new career-high MLB workload for the journeyman right-hander, who owns a career 4.44 ERA (4.54 FIP, 3.70 SIERA) with a 23.1% strikeout rate, 8% walk rate and 39.5% grounder rate in 235 1/3 big league innings between Minnesota, Atlanta and New York. Tonkin has also pitched in the D-backs and Brewers systems in addition to stints with the independent Atlantic League’s Long Island Ducks, the Mexican League’s Toros de Tijuana, and the Nippon-Ham Fighters in Japan.

As with Tonkin’s prior DFAs, he’ll either be traded, passed through outright waivers or released within the next week. He’d have the option to reject an outright assignment to Triple-A in the event that he goes unclaimed, though doing so would require forfeiting the remainder of the salary on the $1MM split major league contract he signed over the winter.

Mets Select Abraham Almonte

The Mets announced some roster moves today, placing infielder Mark Vientos on the 10-day injured list due to left wrist tendonitis, retroactive to August 16. Outfielder Abraham Almonte has been selected to take his place on the active roster. To open a spot for Almonte on the 40-man, left-hander Josh Walker has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Almonte, 34, has been on and off the Mets’ roster lately. Signed to a minor league deal in the offseason, he was brought up to the big leagues last week before being designated for assignment and outrighted a few days later after taking just 12 plate appearances in four games. He has enough service time that he could have rejected the outright assignment but seems to have accepted and will now make a quick return to the majors.

Prior to getting called up, he was having a strong season in the minors. He hit .244/377/.548 in 167 plate appearances, walking at an 18% clip and producing a wRC+ of 128. He’s often hit well in the minors but has struggled to replicate that production in the majors. Dating back to 2013, he’s hit .234/.301/.373 for a wRC+ of 82 in 1,375 trips to the plate in the show. He figures to join the outfield mix alongside Brandon Nimmo, DJ Stewart, Rafael Ortega and Tim Locastro.

Vientos has always crushed minor league pitching but has hit just .188/.240/.286 in his first 167 major league appearances. Despite that tepid output, the Mets will be challenged to cover third base in his absence with Eduardo Escobar having been traded to the Angels and Brett Baty also on the IL. Some combination of Jonathan Araúz, Danny Mendick and Jeff McNeil figure to be slotted into that position as well as second base. It’s unclear how long Vientos is expected to be out for.

Walker, 28, was first added to the club’s roster in May. He’s since made 13 appearances with an ERA of 8.10 in that small sample. He landed on the injured list a few days ago due to a right oblique strain and it seems it’s significant enough to end his season. Today’s transfer means he’s ineligible to return until the middle of October. Barring a miracle postseason run by the Mets, he won’t be back this year.

Jimmy Yacabonis Elects Free Agency

August 15: Yacabonis has elected free agency, according to the transaction log at MLB.com.

August 14: Before this evening’s win over the Pirates, the Mets reinstated Sam Coonrod from the 60-day injured list. New York placed Josh Walker on the 15-day IL to clear an active roster spot while recalling reliever John Curtiss and placing him on the 60-day IL in a 40-man move. Additionally, New York sent righty Jimmy Yacabonis outright to Triple-A Syracuse after he was designated for assignment over the weekend.

Coonrod returned to throw a scoreless inning of relief in his season debut. The right-hander had missed the entire season after suffering a severe lat strain in Spring Training. Claimed off waivers from the Phillies in February, Coonrod is attempting to secure a bullpen spot in Queens going into 2024. He’s eligible for arbitration through ’25.

Curtiss was diagnosed with a loose body in his throwing elbow, tweets Tim Britton of the Athletic. The 60-day IL placement officially ends his season. The 30-year-old righty has made 15 appearances for New York, working to a 4.58 ERA across 19 2/3 innings. Curtiss missed all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery. He’s eligible for arbitration twice more but could be non-tendered at year’s end.

Yacabonis has worked 13 2/3 frames over seven outings. He’s allowed 10 runs while working mostly low-leverage relief. A journeyman who has appeared in parts of six MLB seasons with five different clubs, he’ll have the right to test minor league free agency by virtue of multiple career outrights.

Mets To Select T.J. McFarland

The Mets are calling up left-hander T.J. McFarland, reports Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. The southpaw wasn’t on the 40-man roster but the Mets already had vacancies in that regard. Fellow lefty Josh Walker will be optioned to open a spot on the active roster.

McFarland, 34, signed a minor league deal with the Mets this winter. He’s spent the year in Triple-A Syracuse, tossing 32 2/3 innings over 23 appearances. He has a 2.76 ERA in that time, striking out 25.9% of opponents while walking 11.9% of them and getting grounders on 62.8% of balls in play.

The lefty has plenty of big league experience as a ground ball specialist. He has a 4.13 career ERA in 472 1/3 innings, striking out just 13.5% of hitters at the big league level but keeping the ball on the ground at a 62.1% clip. He was released by the Cardinals in August of last year after posting a 6.61 ERA, though that figure was at 2.56 the year prior.

The Mets have operated with Brooks Raley as their primary left-hander this season, with pitchers like Walker and Zach Muckenhirn also getting into the mix. McFarland’s strong work in Triple-A this year will now get him a chance to play a role in the bullpen. Mets’ relievers have a combined 4.22 ERA, a mark that places them 22nd out of the 30 clubs in the league.

Mets Designate Tommy Hunter For Assignment

The Mets have designated right-hander Tommy Hunter for assignment and optioned lefty Zach Muckenhirn to Triple-A, per a team announcement. In their places, the club has recalled right-hander John Curtiss and left-hander Josh Walker to the big league roster.

A first-round pick by the Rangers in the 2007 draft, Hunter is a veteran of sixteen MLB seasons with a career 4.07 ERA in 917 1/3 innings of work. After posting strong numbers for the Mets during the 2021 and 2022 seasons, with a 1.78 ERA in 30 1/3 innings, Hunter has struggled during his age 36 season. In 2023, Hunter has posted a 6.85 ERA in 23 2/3 innings. Some of those struggles have been thanks to an unusually low 56.8% strand rate, though Hunter has allowed far too much hard contact this season, with a 13.6% barrel rate and a HardHit rate of 45.5%. Should Hunter pass through waivers, he’ll have the option to elect free agency or stick with the Mets as bullpen depth at the Triple-A level.

As for Muckenhirn, the left-hander has allowed four runs on eleven hits and two walks in three appearances (six innings) during his limited time in the majors this season. He returns to Triple-A, where he has posted a 1.11 ERA in 24 1/3 innings of work this season, to serve as bullpen depth for the Mets going forward.

Joining the roster in the duo’s place are Curtiss and Walker. Curtiss, 30, has posted a 4.85 ERA in 13 innings of work for the Mets this season after not appearing in the big leagues in 2022 while rehabbing Tommy John surgery. Prior to going under the knife, Curtiss had posted a strong 2.86 ERA in 69 1/3 innings of work since the start of the 2020 season. Walker, meanwhile, made his big league debut for the Mets earlier this year, tossing a scoreless inning in his lone appearance.

Mets To Select Josh Walker

The Mets have optioned left-hander David Peterson, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. His active roster spot will go to fellow lefty Josh Walker, who was not previously on the 40-man roster, though the club already had a vacancy in that regard and won’t need to make a corresponding move.

This is the first time that Walker, 28, has been on a major league roster and he will be making his debut as soon as he’s put into a game. A 37th round selection of the Mets in the 2017 draft, he got some work in the lower levels of the minors in the 2017-2019 stretch before the minor league were canceled by the pandemic in 2020.

In 2021, he shot through three levels, going from High-A to Double-A and Triple-A. He tossed a combined 115 2/3 innings with a 3.73 ERA, striking out 21.5% of opponents against a 6.4% walk rate. Last year, he was limited by injury to just 13 1/3 innings over 13 appearances and has been working exclusively in relief here in 2023. He has tossed 13 1/3 innings over nine Triple-A outings with a miniscule 0.68 ERA, 34% strikeout rate, 11.3% walk rate and 32.1% ground ball rate. He’ll give the Mets a second left-handed relief option alongside Brooks Raley.

As for Peterson, he was called on to join the rotation as the Mets were dealing with injuries to Carlos Carrasco, José Quintana, Justin Verlander and the sticky stuff suspension of Max Scherzer. Unfortunately, he’s been lit up so far this year, currently sporting an 8.08 ERA through eight starts. There’s likely a bit of bad luck in there as Peterson actually has strong strikeout and walk rates of 24.7% and 7.7%, respectively. A .404 batting average on balls in play and 58.8% strand rate have helped some extra earned runs across the plate, but so have the eight homers Peterson’s allowed so far.

With Verlander and Scherzer both now back and Carrasco expected to rejoin the club in the near future, Peterson will head down to the farm and try to get things back on track for whenever the club needs reinforcements again.
