Rockies Designate Rincon For Assignment

By Mike Axisa | May 1, 2010 at 12:24pm CDT

12:24pm: Renck tweets that Rincon has in fact been designated for assignment.

12:11pm: The Rockies are calling up righthander Esmil Rogers to start today's game against the Giants, and it appears that reliever Juan Rincon may lose his 40-man roster spot according to The Denver Post's Troy Renck (via Twitter). Rincon's name was not included on the pre-game lineup card.

The 31-year-old Rincon has appeared in just one game for the Rockies this year, giving up one run in one inning of work. Colorado re-signed him to a minor league contract over the winter.

Odds & Ends: Rincon, Calero, Rangers, Encarnacion

By Mike Axisa | January 2, 2010 at 4:13pm CDT

Here are some links to kick off the weekend…

  • Troy Renck of The Denver Post provides the details on Juan Rincon's contract with the Rockies. He'll earn $800K plus incentives in the big leagues, or $20K per month in the minors.
  • Satchel Price at Beyond The Box Score wonders why we haven't heard more about Kiko Calero this offseason. The Cubs and Giants were interested in the righthander at various times this offseason.
  • Richard Durrett of ESPN Dallas reiterates what we heard yesterday: the Rangers are seeking a veteran catcher. He mentions that they've shown interest in both Rod Barajas and Dioner Navarro.
  • Edwin Encarnacion suffered burns to his face in a fireworks accident according to ESPN Deportes' Enrique Rojas. He will not require surgery, and will be ready to go in Spring Training.
  • Jeff Passan at Yahoo! Sports lists ten players we should keep an on eye to see how their market develops during the remainder of the offseason. His list is led by Matt Holliday and Aroldis Chapman.
  • MLB.com's Matthew Leach notes that if the Cardinals felt they weren't in a good position to re-sign Holliday, they would have moved on to other targets by now.
  • Dick Kaegel of MLB.com says that "it would take a calamitous showing" for Royals' manager Trey Hillman to lose his job this season given his relationship with GM Dayton Moore.
  • Steve Slowinski at DRaysBay goes back in time to evaluate the Danys Baez and Lance Carter for Edwin Jackson and Chuck Tiffany trade.

Rockies Re-Sign Juan Rincon

By Mike Axisa | December 18, 2009 at 6:51pm CDT

The Rockies have re-signed reliever Juan Rincon to a minor league deal, according to MLB.com’s Thomas Harding. He’ll compete for a bullpen spot in Spring Training.

Rincon, 31 next month, had a 7.52 ERA in 26.1 innings with the Rockies last season. After a long stint with the Twins, Rincon has bounced around from Cleveland to Detroit to Colorado in the last few seasons.

Rockies Notes: Marquis, Betancourt, Giambi

By Luke Adams 2 | October 15, 2009 at 5:50pm CDT

Tracy Ringolsby of Inside The Rockies examines Colorado's commitments for 2010, and the decisions they'll face regarding potential free agents and arbitration cases. Here are a few of his thoughts:

  • Jason Marquis has said he wants to sign with the Mets and likely won't be back in Colorado.
  • There's a good chance that lefty Alan Embree will retire.
  • Jose Contreras is interested in returning in a middle relief capacity, but Matt Belisle is a younger option for the team in that role.
  • The club would like to retain Rafael Betancourt, but his contract would have to be reworked. Betancourt has a $5.4MM club option for 2010.
  • Behind the plate, Chris Iannetta will be back as the starter. Yorvit Torrealba could return as Ianetta's backup, but probably not for more than $1MM.
  • The team may not have room for Jason Giambi, instead opting to use his roster spot on a right-handed hitter who can play both infield corners.
  • Righty relievers Juan Rincon and Matt Herges could receive minor-league invites.

Rockies DFA Matt Murton

By | August 26, 2009 at 6:22pm CDT

According to Doug Miller of MLB.com, the Rockies have designated outfielder Matt Murton for assignment.

The move cleared roster space for reliever Juan Rincon, who was activated from the disabled list Wednesday evening and will add depth to the Rockies' bullpen for the stretch run.  Murton, now 27, posted a passable .267/.327/.444 line in 45 at-bats with the Rockies earlier this season and had a .321 batting average with 71 RBI for Triple-A Colorado Springs.  With those kind of numbers, he's sure to draw interest from opposing ball clubs.

Juan Rincon Designated For Assignment

By Tim Dierkes | May 12, 2009 at 11:00pm CDT

According to John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers designated reliever Juan Rincon for assignment to make room for Dontrelle Willis.  Rincon, 30, posted a 5.23 ERA in 10.3 innings for the Tigers this year.  The Tigers had signed Rincon to a minor league deal back on January 20th.

Willis made four minor league starts at various levels, posting a 3.86 ERA and 3.16 BB/9.  Under the contract extension signed in December of '07, Willis will earn $10MM this year and $12MM in '10.

Tigers Sign Juan Rincon

By Tim Dierkes | January 20, 2009 at 10:39am CDT

According to the AP, the Tigers signed reliever Juan Rincon to a minor league deal.  Rincon, 30 in a few days, posted a 5.86 ERA in 55.3 innings with the Twins and Indians last year.  Rincon’s control and ability to get groundballs has slipped in recent times.

Indians Sign Rincon, Graffanino

By Tim Dierkes | June 24, 2008 at 10:53am CDT

According to Anthony Castrovince at MLB.com, the Indians have signed reliever Juan Rincon and infielder Tony Graffanino to minor league deals.

Rincon, 29, lost effectiveness in August of ’06 and pretty much never recovered.  It’s easy to try to tie his decline to his May ’05 performance enhancing drug suspension, but he was solid for the rest of that season.

Graffanino, 35, is trying to work his way back from knee and ACL surgeries.

Odds And Ends: Baldelli, Rincon, Clemens

By Coley Ward 2 | June 14, 2008 at 4:06pm CDT

  • The Tampa Tribune is reporting that Rays OF Rocco Baldelli (60-day DL, mitochondrial disorder) is close to joining a minor-league team for a 20-day rehabilitation assignment. Baldelli thinks he can return to the Rays this season, but he has yet to hold any workouts in the outfield and hinted he could return as a DH. "Obviously, I’d like to be playing the field," Baldelli said. "But realistically, I’m trying not to look too far ahead."
  • Juan Rincon has declined the Twins’ offer of an assignment to Class AAA Rochester, and the team formally designated him for assignment. In all likelihood, that means Rincon will become a free agent in 10 days. Rincon has been with the Twins for his entire career and had a couple of good years in 2003-2006, but he’s fallen on hard times lately.
  • If anybody out there harbored hopes that Roger Clemens would return to pitch this season, here’s some cold water to splash on your face. A former federal prosecutor tells the New York Daily News that the evidence against Roger Clemens – testimony from Andy Pettitte and Brian McNamee, as well as the bloody gauze pads, used syringes and steroid vials McNamee turned over to authorities in January – is more than enough to indict Clemens.

Coley Ward writes for Umpbump.com and can be reached here.
