14 Players Elect Free Agency

Now that the season is over, we’ll start seeing several players choose to become minor league free agents.  Major League free agents (i.e. players with six-plus years of big league service time) will hit the open market five days after the end of the World Series, but eligible minor leaguers can already start electing free agency.

To qualify, these players must have been all outrighted off their team’s 40-man rosters during the 2025 season without being added back.  These players also must have multiple career outrights on their resume, and/or at least three years of Major League service time.

We’ll offer periodic updates over the coming weeks about many other players hitting the market in this fashion.  These free agent decisions are all listed on the official MLB.com or MILB.com transactions pages, for further reference.

Marlins Outright Luarbert Arias

The Marlins have outrighted right-hander Luarbert Arias to Triple-A Jacksonville, according to a report from Daniel Alvarez Montes of El Extrabase this afternoon. Arias had previously been designated for assignment by Miami in a flurry of roster moves earlier this week, but the club evidently successfully passed the righty through waivers.

Arias, 24, made his big league debut with the Marlins earlier this year. A product of Maracay, Venezuela, Arias signed with the Padres as an amateur and made his pro debut back in 2018. He stuck around the Padres organization in the lower levels of the minors until he was plucked from San Diego by the Marlins in the minor league phase of the 2021 Rule 5 draft. He made his organizational debut in 2022 and mostly pitched well at the Single-A level before enjoying something of a breakout season in 2023 when he posted a 1.84 ERA in 58 2/3 innings of work between the High-A and Double-A levels.

That excellent performance earned Arias his first call-up to Triple-A in 2023, and in 86 1/3 innings of work at the level over the past two seasons he’s mostly looked quite good with a 3.23 ERA in 59 outings. A 22.0% strikeout rate against a 9.7% walk rate leaves something to be desired, but those peripheral numbers looked better in 2024 than they have this year, when he’s struck out just 8.5% of his opponents while walking 15.9% in 15 appearances. Regardless of those struggles, the Marlins still opted to bring Arias up from Triple-A to make his major league debut this year. He’s struggled badly through 10 1/3 innings of work, surrendering an ERA of 11.32 with an 18.2% strikeout rate against a 9.1% walk rate.

While Arias lacks the requisite service time to reject the assignment in favor of free agency, he does have a previous outright on his record after being outrighted off Miami’s roster earlier this year. That means he could head into free agency early if he so chooses, but either way he’ll be granted minor league free agency at the end of the season if he’s not added back to the 40-man roster before then. The right-hander would then be available on the open market to any team interested in taking a chance on him. Given his success at Triple-A as recently as last year and the fact that he has minimal service time with minor league options remaining, he should be a fairly attractive candidate for a minor league deal in free agency if not added back to Miami’s 40-man roster.

Marlins Announce Several Roster Moves

The Marlins have designated right-hander Luarbert Arias for assignment and selected the contract of infielder Jack Winkler from Triple-A Jacksonville, per a club announcement. They’ve also placed third baseman Connor Norby and outfielder Derek Hill on the 10-day injured list — the former due to a quad strain and the latter due to a hamstring strain. Lefty Josh Simpson and infielder Maximo Acosta have been recalled from Triple-A to take that pair of roster spots.

Arias, a 24-year-old righty, made his major league debut with Miami this season but was torched for 13 runs in 10 1/3 innings. He’s posted a 3.93 ERA in 18 1/3 innings in Triple-A but walked nearly twice as many batters (13) as he’s punched out (seven). The Marlins selected Arias, a former minor league Rule 5 pickup out of the Padres organization, back in November to protect him from being nabbed in the major league phase of the most recent Rule 5 draft.

At the time, it wasn’t hard to see why. Arias was coming off a strong year in Jacksonville, having totaled 68 innings with a 3.04 ERA, 25.8% strikeout rate and 9.3% walk rate. He’s taken notable steps back this season and has already been designated for assignment and passed through waivers once this summer. Because of that prior outright, he can reject a minor league assignment in favor of free agency if he once again goes unclaimed.

Winkler’s contract is being selected to the roster for the second time this season. The 26-year-old utilityman went 2-for-12 with a pair of singles in a very brief MLB look earlier this year but has since been designated for assignment and outrighted. He’s back in the majors now despite struggling through a 9-for-58 skid in Triple-A between big league stints. He’ll add a righty bat with some defensive versatility to the Marlins’ bench while Norby is out, but Winkler posted a lackluster .220/.291/.328 batting line in 261 plate appearances during his Triple-A debut this year, so fans shouldn’t expect much in the way of offensive contributions.

It’s the third IL stint of the season for both Norby and Hill. Given the minimal time left on the regular-season calendar, either injury could feasibly be season-ending, but there’s been no definitive word from the club on that front just yet.

Norby, acquired alongside Kyle Stowers in last summer’s Trevor Rogers trade with Baltimore, hasn’t hit nearly as well as hoped this year. The former top prospect has been sidelined by oblique and wrist injuries previously, batting .274/.298/.373 when healthy enough to take the field. Hill, 29, has played strong defense but hit just .213/.275/.331 in 141 plate appearances on the year. He’s previously missed time due to wrist and finger injuries.

Marlins Place Edward Cabrera On IL With Right Elbow Sprain

With rosters expanding from 26 to 28 today, the Marlins announced a series of roster moves. They have selected catcher Brian Navarreto and right-hander Luarbert Árias to the roster, in addition to recalling righty Michael Petersen. To open a third roster spot, righty Edward Cabrera has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a right elbow sprain. To open 40-man spots for Navarreto and Arias, righties Anthony Bender and Tyler Zuber have been transferred to the 60-day IL. Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reported many of these moves prior to the official announcement.

It’s unclear how serious Cabrera’s injury is but it’s an ominous development. An issue with a pitcher’s throwing elbow is always somewhat worrisome and Cabrera has a notable injury history. Shoulder problems kept him under 100 innings in both 2023 and 2024. He had a minor elbow issue in July of this year but managed to avoid the IL at that time.

On the whole, it’s been an exciting breakout season for Cabrera. He has always had the stuff to get strikeouts and ground balls but control has been a problem and the aforementioned injuries also prevented him from building to a full starter’s workload. He came into 2025 with 294 career innings, a 4.32 earned run average, 26% strikeout rate, 48.6% ground ball rate but a 13.3% walk rate. Here in 2025, he has tossed 128 2/3 innings while reducing his walk rate all the way to 7.7%. His strikeout and ground ball rates have stayed strong at 25.8% and 46.4%, respectively. Put it all together and his ERA has come in at 3.57.

Cabrera is still controlled for three seasons beyond this one and has established himself as a legit big league starter. That’s huge for the Marlins though the elbow injury could obviously put a damper on that if it’s serious.

Navarreto, 30, gets back to the big leagues for the first time in years. His major league track record consists of just two games back in 2020. He has been with the Marlins this year on a minor league deal and has slashed .229/.301/.392 in Triple-A. The Fish have Agustín Ramírez and Liam Hicks on the roster but Ramírez will occasionally serve as the designated hitter and Hicks plays a bit of first base. Navarreto can give the club a bit of cover at the catcher position, allowing them to put both Ramírez and Hicks in the lineup while still having a safety net.

Árias, 24, got to make his major league debut with the Marlins earlier this year. He was added to the 40-man roster in November to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft. However, he has struggled badly this year, with a 11 earned runs allowed in his first nine big league innings. He also hasn’t been great in the minors, with a 4.74 ERA, 11.5% strikeout rate and 15% walk rate.

The Marlins were able to pass him through waivers in June but have added him back to the roster today. He still has a full slate of options and doesn’t need to stick on the active roster. Last year, he tossed 68 Triple-A innings with a 3.04 ERA, 25.8% strikeout rate and 9.3% walk rate. The Marlins would obviously love to figure out a way to get him back to that kind of performance.

Bender was already reported to have suffered a season-ending leg injury, so his transfer to the 60-day IL is no surprise. As for Zuber, he landed on the 15-day IL a couple of days ago due to a lat strain. His current status is unclear but this transfer indicates the Marlins don’t expect him back this season.

Marlins Outright Luarbert Arias

The Marlins sent right-hander Luarbert Arias outright to Triple-A Jacksonville, according to the MLB.com transaction log. He’d been designated for assignment last weekend when Miami called up Freddy Tarnok.

Miami added Arias to the 40-man roster at the beginning of last offseason. He was coming off a 3.04 ERA over 68 Triple-A innings and would have qualified for minor league free agency if the Fish didn’t select his contract. That put him on the doorstep of the majors, and he received his first MLB call within the season’s first week. Arias began his career with a three-inning scoreless appearance against the Mets on March 31. He gave up runs in each of his next three outings and was optioned back to Triple-A by the middle of April.

The 24-year-old had another brief MLB stint at the end of April. He’d been on optional assignment in Jacksonville since the start of May. Arias hasn’t had the same success he had there a year ago. His 3.93 ERA over 18 1/3 innings isn’t terrible, but he has recorded only seven strikeouts while issuing 13 walks. MLB opponents tagged him for 11 runs through 9 1/3 frames.

Arias has never been outrighted and has almost no MLB service time. He therefore doesn’t have the right to elect free agency. He’ll remain in Jacksonville without occupying a 40-man roster spot and try to recapture last year’s form. He would qualify for minor league free agency at the beginning of the offseason if he doesn’t get back onto the roster before then.

Marlins Select Freddy Tarnok

June 15: The Marlins made it official today, with left-hander Anthony Veneziano optioned to Jacksonville and right-hander Luarbert Árias designated for assignment as the corresponding moves. Árias was added to the club’s 40-man roster in November. He has a 10.61 ERA in 9 1/3 big league innings so far in his career. He has a 3.93 ERA at the Triple-A level this year but with an 8.5% strikeout rate and 15.9% walk rate.

June 14: The Marlins are selecting righty Freddy Tarnok onto the big league roster, reports MLBTR’s Steve Adams. Miami will need to make corresponding active and 40-man roster moves.

Tarnok joined the organization on an offseason minor league deal. He has been working from the rotation at Triple-A Jacksonville. He’s not going very deep into games — he has yet to work more than five innings — but he has managed alright rate production. Tarnok carries a 4.79 earned run average while striking out more than a quarter of opponents. He’s averaging north of 95 MPH on his fastball while mixing in a slider, curveball and changeup. Tarnok is coming off his best start of the season, striking out six across five scoreless innings against Tampa Bay’s affiliate last weekend.

That earns the 26-year-old his first MLB action in two years. Tarnok is a former third-round pick of the Braves who was a solid prospect. Atlanta dealt him to the A’s in the three-team Sean Murphy trade over the 2022-23 offseason. Tarnok had made one relief appearance as a Brave and pitched five times for the A’s. He allowed eight runs in 15 1/3 career innings. His ’23 season ended when he underwent right hip surgery. That lingered into last year and ultimately ended his tenure in green and gold. Tarnok was claimed off waivers by Philadelphia but didn’t make an MLB appearance for the Phils and was outrighted off the 40-man roster at the beginning of the winter.

Miami needs a fifth starter after losing Max Meyer and Ryan Weathers to the injured list. They welcomed Eury Pérez back from his Tommy John rehab on Monday to fill one spot. They haven’t settled on the final spot, though Janson Junk worked nearly six innings of relief during a bullpen game today against Washington. Junk could assume a more traditional rotation role moving forward, but they used another five relievers this afternoon. Tarnok gives them a fresh arm capable of working multiple innings with Pérez slated to start tomorrow.

Sixto Sanchez Elects Free Agency

9:21PM: Sanchez has chosen to become a free agent, Azout reports (X link).

5:26PM: The Marlins have taken Sixto Sánchez off the roster. Miami announced that the former top pitching prospect went unclaimed on waivers and was sent outright to Triple-A Jacksonville. Sánchez has the requisite service time to become a minor league free agent, though the Fish didn’t announce that he has already done so. Miami also outrighted left-hander Josh Simpson and selected the contract of righty Luarbert Arias.

Sánchez was the centerpiece of the J.T. Realmuto trade return. The 6’0″ righty was regarded as perhaps the best pitching prospect in MLB at the time. Sánchez never came close to meeting those lofty expectations. Shoulder injuries have largely derailed his career, as Sánchez has lost huge chunks of time to the IL over the past half-decade. He didn’t throw a single MLB pitch between 2021-23. Sánchez returned to log 35 2/3 innings in a swing role this season, but he surrendered more than six earned runs per nine. Shoulder inflammation ended his season in early June.

Simpson, 27, has yet to make his MLB debut. He had been on the 40-man roster since the end of the 2022 season. Simpson lost most of this season to an ulnar nerve injury that required surgery. He allowed 14 runs (11 earned) across 16 innings between three minor league levels. He’s also likely headed to minor league free agency.

Arias, 23, would have joined them on the open market if the Fish didn’t put him on the 40-man roster. The Venezuelan-born righty had a nice year in a late-inning role for Jacksonville. Arias posted a 3.04 earned run average through 68 innings. He fanned upwards of a quarter of opponents against a 9.3% walk rate. He’s a pure reliever who can compete for a spot in a wide open bullpen as he tries to earn his first big league call.
