Ronny Paulino

Odds & Ends: Paulino, Beltre, Werth, Thome

By Zachary Links | December 5, 2010 at 10:43pm CDT

Some links on what has been a very busy day in baseball..

  • Ronny Paulino is on the Rockies' radar after being non-tendered by the Marlins, writes Joe Frisaro of MLB.com.
  • Don't expect Adrian Beltre in Baltimore, GM Andy MacPhail told Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com.
  • GM Ruben Amaro says the Phillies offered Jayson Werth a significant contract, writes David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News.
  • The Nationals' offer for Werth was so far beyond what everyone else was offering that agent Scott Boras didn't bother to ask other teams if they wanted to match, tweets Jayson Stark of ESPN.
  • Not only does Jim Thome plan on coming back in 2011, he wants to play for two more seasons, writes Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
  • Mariano Rivera's new deal with the Yanks is for exactly $30MM but deferred payments make it worth $14.7MM per year, tweets Jon Heyman of SI.
  • The Carl Pavano market should become a little more transparent this week, says Buster Olney of ESPN (via Twitter).  Earlier we learned that the Nats are in the mix for the veteran pitcher.

Odds & Ends: Red Sox, Dobbs, Paulino, Hawpe

By Luke Adams 2 | August 21, 2010 at 1:46pm CDT

Links for Saturday, as Ubaldo Jimenez prepares for his third attempt at his 18th win….

  • Alex Speier of WEEI spoke to Red Sox draftees Anthony Ranaudo and Brandon Workman about their down to the wire negotiations.
  • Greg Dobbs has cleared waivers and accepted a minor league assignment, tweets Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Phillies designated Dobbs for assignment earlier this week.
  • After sending Conor Jackson back to the disabled list, the Athletics could use another bat, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Rosenthal notes that the market for right-handed hitters is fairly thin.
  • Despite being suspended 50 games for a drug policy violation, Ronny Paulino could be back with the Marlins next year, writes Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.
  • As Jim Tracy tells Jim Armstrong of the Denver Post, Brad Hawpe's DFA doesn't mean the 31-year-old will never be a Rockie again.
  • A few Reds who spoke to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon are hoping Dusty Baker will accept the team's extension offer.
  • Recently-acquired Joe Saunders is excited about the future in Arizona, according to Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic.

Odds & Ends: Lowell, Paulino, Cardinals, Nationals

By Luke Adams 2 | April 11, 2010 at 2:30pm CDT

Links for Sunday….

  • Tony La Russa tells Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post Dispatch that he's confident GM John Mozeliak will add pieces if the Cardinals have clear needs this summer.
  • Barry Bonds still hasn't retired, notes Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News (via Twitter).
  • Mike Lowell explained to Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston that he would like to take a year or two off once he's done playing. Lowell would consider broadcasting, but doesn't think he wants to coach at this point.
  • Tom D'Angelo of the Palm Beach Post credits Florida's front office with another steal for acquiring Ronny Paulino. The Marlins traded for Paulino a year ago in exchange for Hector Correa, who isn't close to the big leagues.
  • Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch takes a look at the Cardinals' present and future payroll situation.
  • Yesterday we discussed the Nationals' need to make room on their 25-man roster for Livan Hernandez, who will start for Washington today. MLB.com's Bill Ladson tweets that the team has cleared a spot by optioning Garrett Mock to Triple A, deciding against sending down Jesse English.
  • Despite not receiving much first base production so far, Jerry Manuel says the Mets have no plans to call up Ike Davis, according to Dan Martin of the New York Post.
  • The New York Post's Joel Sherman explains why it's important for the New York franchises to develop pitching depth from within their organizations.

Marlins Rumors: Gload, Paulino

By Luke Adams 2 | November 19, 2009 at 9:38pm CDT

After declining his option earlier in the month, the Florida Marlins have offered Ross Gload a lesser contract, according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald. Spencer indicates the offer is similar to the one that Wes Helms signed with the Marlins last winter, which was a two-year deal worth $1.9MM. The option that the Marlins turned down was for $2.6MM.

Gload hit .261/.329/.400 as a pinch-hitter and occasional starter for Florida in 2009, and stated previously that he'd like to stay with the Marlins. As of midnight tonight, of course, any team will be able to negotiate with Gload.

Later in his article, Spencer adds Ronny Paulino's name to the ever-growing list of Marlins players that teams have looked into acquiring. Ricky Nolasco, Dan Uggla, Jorge Cantu, and Cody Ross have also "received nibbles."

The Jason Bay Trade Revisited

By Nat Boyle | April 5, 2009 at 11:43am CDT

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsbugh Post-Gazette recounts the details of the deadline deal that sent Jason Bay to Boston, specifically the final 7 minutes that reshaped the future of the Pirates organization. It's a really interesting read for any rumor-enthusiasts. Some points of interest:

  • According to Kovacevic, before finally dealing Bay at the buzzer, Pittsburgh had been working on dealing Bay for over a year and a half.
  • Before the 2008 season, the Bucs had come close to dealing Bay and catcher Ronny Paulino to Cleveland for Cliff Lee, Franklin Guttierez, and Kelly Shoppach. The Pirates did not feel it was enough and killed it.
  • Just 20 minutes before the 4p.m. deadline, Kovacevic says the Braves and Rays were considered the primary trading partners, particularly the "prospect-rich Rays." But with only 15 minutes left, "the Pirates called each [team] to insist upon a specific prospect package and summarily were rejected," writes Kovacevic.

The Rays Index takes a look at this article from a Tampa Bay perspective.

Stark’s Latest: Keppinger, Baker, Phillies

By | March 28, 2009 at 5:20pm CDT

ESPN.com's Jayson Stark has a new blog post up.  Some of this is old news, but probably worth revisiting…

  • The Reds are dangling infielder Jeff Keppinger, with the Red Sox and Astros as possible suitors.
  • The Red Sox and Astros have also checked in on Colorado's Jeff Baker, along with the Phillies.  But, the Rockies are reportedly demanding a "quality young starter" in return.
  • The Mets expressed interest in Ronny Paulino before he was dealt to the Giants (then moved swiftly to the Marlins).
  • The Phillies continue to shop around for a right-handed reserve outfielder.

Marlins Roster Spots

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 28, 2009 at 9:47am CDT

MLB.com's Joe Frisaro passes along the latest Marlins rumors:
  • The Marlins appear to be looking for a left-handed bench player who can pinch hit and spot start. Sounds like Luis Gonzalez could be a fit.
  • They're also interested in lefty relief help.
  • Frisaro mentions Adam Melhuse as a backup catching option, but Florida has since acquired Ronny Paulino.

Taschner To Phils; Paulino To Fish; Correa To SF

By Tim Dierkes | March 28, 2009 at 2:01am CDT

SATURDAY, 2:01am: The Giants quickly turned Paulino around in a trade to the Florida Marlins for right-handed pitcher Hector Correa, MLB.com reports.

Correa, 21, has a career 8-10 record with a 4.52 ERA in 34 games (29 starts) in the minor leagues.

Paulino will likely be the backup catcher to John Baker. Paulino, 27, hit .278 in 304 games with Pittsburgh from 2005 to 2008.

FRIDAY, 9:08am: According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Phillies acquired lefty reliever Jack Taschner today for catcher Ronny Paulino.  The Phils had acquired Paulino from the Pirates on December 10th.

Taschner, 31 in April, allowed lefties to hit .279/.339/.394 line last year.  They knocked him around in '07 even worse, so he's not the perfect fill-in for J.C. Romero.

Rosenthal On Melky, Matthews, Pedro, Ohman

By Tim Dierkes | March 25, 2009 at 3:10pm CDT

As usual, good stuff from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports…

  • Rosenthal says the Yankees are open to moving Melky Cabrera, and opines that the White Sox would be a perfect fit.  Trading Cabrera would open up the Yankees' outfield picture for sure, but leave them shakier in center with Brett Gardner and Nick Swisher.  Rosenthal also says the White Sox have expressed some interest in a deal to acquire Gary Matthews Jr., assuming the Angels pay "the vast majority of the $33MM remaining on the final three years of his contract."
  • Pedro Martinez reached out to the Royals before they signed Sidney Ponson, but KC couldn't afford him.  Would Pedro have been a better signing than Horacio Ramirez and Willie Bloomquist?  Martinez's friends are telling him his $5MM asking price is unrealistic.  Rosenthal says that if Pedro drops it down to $1-2MM, he can probably get the Dodgers and other teams involved.
  • The Marlins are looking for relief help.  They like Will Ohman but not his $2MM asking price.
  • The A's thought they were close to a $1.7MM deal for Joe Beimel before he went to the Nats for $300K more.
  • Catcher Ronny Paulino, acquired by the Phillies from the Pirates in December, is available.  Rosenthal considers the Marlins a possible fit.
