Shannon Stewart Switches Agents

By Tim Dierkes | February 18, 2008 at 9:58am CDT

Shannon Stewart had a bounceback 2007, finally staying healthy and hitting .290/.345/.394 as Oakland’s left fielder.  Though his left field defense ranked seventh at the position according to the Fielding Bible’s panel of experts, a sub-.400 SLG doesn’t work for a corner outfielder.  He hit all of his playing time incentives in ’07, earning a total salary of $2.5MM.

ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick notes that Stewart "apparently scared off some clubs by looking for a two-year deal earlier this winter."  Is that something Stewart pushed for, or was it his representatives at Legacy Sports Group?  Either way, Stewart has switched to Barry Praver and Scott Shapiro given his lingering unemployment.

Crasnick suggests the Mariners and Padres as two possibilities for Stewart, who is likely to sign quickly under the new representation.  If he sets his sights on one year and a fourth outfielder role he should find something. If Stewart signs elsewhere and Mike Piazza retires, the A’s stand to snag the 39th overall pick in June.  The A’s could find the next Joba Chamberlain, Clay Buchholz, or Huston Street with that pick.

Odds and Ends: Stewart, Shelton, LaRoche

By Tim Dierkes | January 14, 2008 at 10:52pm CDT

Today’s smattering of random rumors and links.  Question for you readers: how do you feel about the Odds and Ends posts in general?  Interesting?  Lame?  Do you skip them, or are they worthwhile?

  • Friend of MLBTR Susan Slusser quotes Shannon Stewart as saying the A’s are one of several teams in the running for his services.  If you browse the ol’ free agent list, you’ll see that the other available free agent left fielders include Barry Bonds, Luis Gonzalez, Kevin Mench, Reggie Sanders, and Brad Wilkerson.
  • Chris Shelton, we hardly knew ye – the Rangers have already DFA’d him.  Career OPS of .825, seems the guy deserves a decent shot somewhere.  Other Rangers news, Jason Jennings seems like a lock at this point.
  • The Pirates and Adam LaRoche agreed at $5MM for ’08.  They could still work out an extension that starts with the ’09 season.
  • Wondering which service to use for your fantasy league this March?  I merely started the discussion at RotoAuthority, and then commenters weighed in with tons of excellent feedback.

Odds and Ends: Tavarez, Lieber, Stewart

By Tim Dierkes | December 4, 2007 at 12:47am CDT

Another collection…

  • A few notes from Brian Cashman…the Yanks have talked to Luis Vizcaino’s agent about bringing him back.  Also, they’ve yet to inquire on any free agent center fielders.
  • Miguel Cabrera has been talking to Ozzie Guillen daily since the season ended.  The article makes Cabrera sound like a big kid.
  • The Red Sox have had a couple of inquiries on Julian Tavarez.
  • Five or six teams have inquired on Shannon Stewart, who wants a two-year pact apparently.
  • The Phillies, contrary to previous reports, are not interested in re-signing Jon Lieber.
  • On a scale of 1 to 10, the chances of the Astros trading for a Miguel Tejada were rated a 2.  The ’Stros don’t want to give up the farm.  That’s also why Joe Nathan is unlikely for Houston.
  • Scott Boras recently called Ed Wade to sell him on Eric Gagne, Jeff Weaver, and Rodrigo Lopez.  Wade seemed unimpressed.
  • Nothing much new on the Padres front – still interested in Kosuke Fukudome, Geoff Jenkins, Jim Edmonds, Darin Erstad, and Mark Prior.
  • Brian Cashman’s phone has been ringing off the hook about Melky Cabrera.

Odds and Ends: Glavine, Kent, Kuroda

By Tim Dierkes | November 6, 2007 at 4:15pm CDT

Picking up some rumors and tidbits that haven’t been otherwise posted during this busy day…

  • An Atlanta TV station states that Tom Glavine would take a lot less money to play for the Braves.  Also, the Astros have reportedly been in touch with him.
  • Joe Torre senses that Jeff Kent will return in 2008.  The Dodgers certainly hope so; he led the team with 20 home runs in ’07.
  • Trey Hillman took a parting shot at Japanese reporters (hat tip to JapanBall).
  • Reliever Masafumi Hirai might come over to MLB.  I’ll have to learn more about him.
  • Hiroki Kuroda prefers to play on the West Coast because he doesn’t like cold weather.  Hmmm, Chicago might not work for him.  Kuroda has declared free agency, and the Mariners are interested.  There is word here that the Rangers have scouted him as well.
  • The Braves are interested in Masahide Kobayashi to close, while the Mariners like him as a middle reliever (link in Japanese).
  • There will be no Mike Lowell + A-Rod combo in Boston.
  • Luis Gonzalez would like to return to the Tigers, while the team is interested in Cliff Floyd and Shannon Stewart for left field.  Ben Broussard may also be on the radar.
  • The Rangers also like Broussard, and they’ve contacted Mike Lamb as well regarding their first base vacancy.  Lamb could play third if they trade Hank Blalock.  Jon Daniels also has Kerry Wood in his sights.
  • The Rockies like Shawn Chacon, but only as a reliever.
  • Derrick Goold breaks down the options for the Cardinals at shortstop.
  • Don’t forget to make an entry in our Hot Stove Hysteria contest.  The deadline is November 12th.  If you feel the need to edit your entry, just post a new one.  They’re time-stamped; your latest entry will be used.  A new prize has been added: a fantasy draft kit from Big Dawg Baseball.

Odds and Ends: Cabrera, Schilling, Stewart

By Tim Dierkes | November 1, 2007 at 1:44pm CDT

Your daily collection of random rumors and links…

  • MLB.com’s Free Agent Frenzy has begun.  You can win Opening Day tickets by closely predicting where 15 free agents will land.  A good strategic move would be to wait until deadline day, November 15th, before submitting.  That way you’ll have more info (keep your browser right here for all the latest free agent info).  By the way, my Top 50 Free Agents list should be ready around Monday.
  • Fielding Bible has their 2007 awards (click the Winners tab).  So much for those who say Andruw is slipping!
  • Miguel Cabrera is available, according to Peter Gammons.  Gammons thinks any package would have to begin with a top pitching prospect such as Phil Hughes, Clay Buchholz, or Clayton Kershaw.
  • Sounds like the Rockies want to keep the 2007 club mostly intact by bringing back free agents (Kaz Matsui, Yorvit Torrealba, Matt Herges, LaTroy Hawkins).  However Josh Fogg and Jeremy Affeldt may be allowed to leave.
  • Though they’re on his list, it doesn’t sound like the D’Backs can afford Curt Schilling.
  • The A’s are talking about re-signing Shannon Stewart, but I don’t see it.  That would have to cost at least $3-4MM.  Meanwhile, Mike Piazza might retire.  Susan Slusser talks about how the A’s would receive compensation for Stewart and Piazza, both Type B free agents.  But that’s only if they offer them arbitration, which is questionable.
  • Comeback time!  Matt Mantei is all surgically repaired and wants to get back into action.  He feels great!  He’d take a minor league contract and/or play for the minimum.  Can’t wait til spring, when we can hear about all the guys who are in the best shape of their careers.  The Tigers might need him with Joel Zumaya’s new, odd injury.
  • A couple of 40+ southpaws will pitch in ’08 – Tom Glavine and David Wells.
  • The O’s will pass on Kris Benson at $7.5MM next year, no surprise.  He had rotator cuff surgery last March.
  • U.S.S. Mariner’s "reasonable" offseason plan.

Floyd Could Return To Marlins

By Tim Dierkes | October 22, 2007 at 10:19pm CDT

Here’s a note I missed from a September 30th Palm Beach Post column:

Cubs outfielder Cliff Floyd, a Marlin from 1997-2002, has told people close to him that he’d like to end his career in Florida. Floyd, a free agent, lives in the Fort Lauderdale area.

Larry Beinfest admitted at that time that he may have underestimated the need for veteran players to round out the roster.  However, Floyd has said that he’s looking for regular playing time and it’s hard to see how the Marlins can offer that.  Shifting Josh Willingham to first base wouldn’t be a bad idea, but that would only fit if Mike Jacobs is traded.  Then you have to ask yourself if you really gain anything by signing Floyd.

A more realistic veteran option for Florida might be Shannon Stewart.  They were considering him last January but backed off due to health concerns.  Stewart proved himself healthy in ’07, playing in 146 games (his highest total since 2001).  Also, he went to high school in Florida.

Cubs Deals For Podsednik, Stewart Dead

By Tim Dierkes | August 12, 2007 at 10:22am CDT

Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that the Cubs will not be acquiring Scott Podsednik, and in fact chances were slim from the beginning.  I saw a recent poll where the majority of Cubs fans thought the Cubs should trade for an outfielder.  I disagree – I can’t see a waiver acquisition improving upon the in-house options.  The one possible exception I can think of is Matt Stairs.  Regardless of my opinion, the Cubs will apparently go with what they’ve got.

Similarly, the idea of acquiring Shannon Stewart should be dismissed.  According to the Contra Costa Times, Stewart’s continued presence in an A’s uniform means the deadline has passed for a trade.  Joe Stiglich notes that Stewart could net the A’s a high draft pick if he leaves via free agency.

Cubs Put In Claim For Shannon Stewart

By Tim Dierkes | August 9, 2007 at 3:50pm CDT

UPDATE: The San Francisco Chronicle verifies the claim.  Stewart has mixed feelings about it.

UPDATE 2: Buster Olney says has heard that the two sides will not be able to work out a trade.

UPDATE 3: Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune says many teams put in a claim for Stewart, and the winner is not yet known.

Several people have emailed me regarding a Bruce Levine report today on ESPN 1000.  It seems the Cubs may have won a waiver claim on Shannon Stewart, meaning the two teams have 48.5 hours to work out a trade.

The 33 year-old outfielder is having a solid year by his standards and has managed to stay healthy.  But with a .401 SLG, he doesn’t add much pop to the currently punchless Cubs squad.  I would imagine Stewart will be a Type B free agent, lessening the quality of the player going to Oakland in return.

A’s Sign Shannon Stewart

By Tim Dierkes | February 7, 2007 at 11:13pm CDT

According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the A’s have signed outfielder Shannon Stewart to a one-year deal that could reach $2.5MM with incentives.  If Stewart can overcome plantar fasciitis in both feet, he can fill Jay Payton’s role as Oakland’s fourth outfielder.  It’s a strong need given the fragility of Mark Kotsay and Milton Bradley.

Stewart, who turns 33 later this month, earned $6.5MM in 2006.  PECOTA sees him hitting .276/.332/.383 in 335 plate appearances this year, finding him most similar to the 1987 version of Gary Ward.  Another good comp is Brady Clark.  ZiPS expects .275/.341/.392 from Stewart in 373 PAs.
