Mark Teixeira Rumors: Thursday

By Tim Dierkes | December 18, 2008 at 9:58pm CDT

9:58pm: Red Sox owner John Henry said:

"We met with Mr. Teixeira and were very much impressed with him. After hearing about his other offers, however, it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor."

Wow.  From favorites to out of the bidding.

9:16pm: Gordon Edes says Boston’s eight-year offer is more than $160MM but less than the $184MM figure Lynch mentioned.  In a newer article, Edes talked to a Red Sox exec who called the idea of a $25MM salary for Tex "ridiculous."  This info gels with the Gammons/Olney suggestion of $22MM per year.  Edes adds that it won’t be a "take it or leave it" type of meeting.

Edes says the Angels haven’t budged off their original offer, which is north of $160MM.  The Nationals have been told by Boras that they’d have to pay extra.

8:38pm: The Red Sox "aren’t close to getting a deal done" with Teixeira according to an updated report by Dan Roche of WBZTV.

8:34pm: When asked whether the Angels might improve their offer to Teixeira, Tony Reagins simply repeated that he had already made him a "fair offer."

6:55pm: Dan Roche of WBZTV also confirms the meeting. He suggests an eight-year Red Sox offer in the $180MM range, but hears that Boston doesn’t expect anything "conclusive" tonight.

6:38pm: Buster Olney and Peter Gammons confirm Lynch’s report. ESPN has heard from major league sources that Boras may soon meet with Red Sox executives. Olney and Gammons heard from another team’s executive who expects the offer to be for "about $22MM" per year for eight years, or about $176MM in total.

5:21pm: Mike Lynch from Channel 5 in Boston reports John Henry and Theo Epstein will meet with Scott Boras tonight with the aim of signing Teixeira tonight or Friday morning.  Lynch says the Sox are offering eight years and $184MM.

1:59pm: SI.com’s Jon Heyman on rumored offers for Tex:

One source said he believed that Boston was in for close to $180 million over eight years and the Angels in for about the same. The Nats may be as high, or even higher than that. Some suggest they have either hit the $200 million mark, or gotten very close. Or that someone else has.

Heyman expects Teixeira to sign next week, and agrees that the Red Sox are the favorites.  He provides odds of each bidding team signing Teixeira.

8:55am: Yesterday’s Mark Teixeira post focused on the Orioles – they seem to be falling behind, though Andy MacPhail said there’s flexibility with their offer.

We learned today from Kat O’Brien of Newsday today that the Yankees have not made an offer to Teixeira, and may not if the bidding gets too high.

Nick Cafardo’s been talking to a GM involved in the bidding, and that person says the Red Sox have the highest offer on the table.  The offer could be eight years at the highest average annual salary.  Sean McAdam says the Red Sox have their own ceiling and won’t get into a bidding war.  He adds that there’s no backup plan for Boston – "it’s Teixeira or bust."

Odds and Ends: Abreu, Millwood, Wigginton

By Tim Dierkes | December 18, 2008 at 2:58pm CDT

Links for Thursday…

  • Luke Hudson agreed to stay with the Royals on a minor league deal.  And because Braves fans keep emailing it…the Braves signed Lance Niekro as a pitcher, as noted in the minor league transactions we linked yesterday.  Talking Chop and Henry Schulman have more.
  • Along similar lines, here’s a link to Joel Sherman’s December 12th story about the Orlando Hudson and Adam Dunn being the Nationals’ backup plan for Mark Teixeira.  That came four days before the Jon Heyman report people keep emailing.
  • C.C. Sabathia’s preferred teams heading into free agency: the Yankees, Brewers, and Angels.
  • Dave O’Brien tries to figure out what the Braves should do with all their money.
  • John Fay explains why the Reds may attempt to acquire a young shortstop.
  • The Orioles may move on to Gregg Zaun now that Matt Treanor is off the board.
  • Geoff Baker speculates on a possible Mariners-Brewers trade match, though nothing seems to be cooking currently.
  • RotoAuthority looks at the biggest losers, comparing ’09 fantasy baseball mock draft positions to ’08.
  • I did a Q&A with Called Safe At Second.
  • ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick writes about how teams view free agent outfielder Bobby Abreu.
  • Kevin Millwood has twelve million reasons to pitch 180 innings in 2009.  I never understood that phrase.  Why is each dollar a reason?
  • Dejan Kovacevic says Ty Wigginton has no wish to return to Pittsburgh.
  • Roch Kubatko is hearing the Orioles may have reached a settlement with Sidney Ponson regarding the grievance.
  • Pitcher Jon Leicester is the latest to head to Japan.
  • Might not read about this on MLBTR, eh?  Chico Harlan says the Nationals signed 16 year-old Dominican prospects Bill Pena and Gregory Baez.

Pirates Looking at Ray King

By Sarah Green | December 17, 2008 at 6:50pm CDT

Ray King is currently playing winter ball in the DR, but he’s one of several relievers the Pirates are pursuing — including Chris Bootcheck and Derrick Turnbow, as we knew — according to MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch. He’s 34, weighs 230 lbs, and a lefty.

King was on the Nationals’ Opening Day roster, but only spent 12 games with the Nats before heading to Triple A (with the affiliates of the White Sox and the Astros). Though his major league ERA has been (well) over 4.00 since 2005, in 32 games with Houston’s AAA Round Rock Express he posted a 2.25 ERA.

Sarah Green writes for the Boston Metro and UmpBump.

Daniel Cabrera Suitors

By Tim Dierkes | December 17, 2008 at 3:50pm CDT

According to John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus, the Pirates top the list of suitors for Daniel Cabrera.  He says the Brewers, Padres, Rangers, Blue Jays, and Nationals are also interested.

We learned yesterday that the Blue Jays are interested but haven’t made an offer yet.  Cabrera’s agent has heard from about half the teams in baseball, and one even offered a multiyear deal.

Mark Teixeira Rumors: Wednesday

By Tim Dierkes | December 17, 2008 at 2:15pm CDT

2:15pm: Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun talked to Orioles president Andy MacPhail, who reminded that the Orioles have flexibility with their offer.

10:46am: Nick Cafardo talked to a GM for one of the five teams in the Teixeira bidding who believes the Red Sox are in the lead.  So…was it Andy MacPhail, Jim Bowden, Brian Cashman, or Tony Reagins?

9:54am: According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Orioles have not improved their initial offer to Mark Teixeira.  The Red Sox, Angels, and Nationals have higher bids on the table.  Olney’s source believes Teixeira would have to "really, really want to play there" to take Baltimore’s offer.

Based on the most recent reports, the Red Sox appear to be at eight years, the Nationals at eight years, $160MM, and Angels at eight years and at least $160MM, and the Orioles at seven years in the $140-150MM range.  I’m guessing a ninth year and an opt-out clause will be two of the biggest factors when it’s all said and done.

Eleven Teams Interested In Daniel Cabrera

By Tim Dierkes | December 15, 2008 at 6:36pm CDT

6:36pm: The Pirates contacted Cabrera’s agent this weekend, so they’re one of the many teams considering him.  Powers told Rob Biertempfel he has "two firm offers" in hand.  Dan Connolly notes that the Blue Jays and Nationals have shown interest in the past.

3:32pm: The Baltimore Sun’s Dan Connolly talked to Daniel Cabrera’s agent Mike Powers, who says eleven teams have expressed interest in his client.  One even offered a multiyear deal.  Cabrera, 28 in May, was non-tendered by the Orioles on Friday.

Mark Teixeira Rumors: Monday

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 15, 2008 at 5:53pm CDT

Some Mark Teixeira nuggets have surfaced around the web…

  • The Angels “appear to have abandoned their usual quick-deadline strategy” according to Jon Heyman. They’ve been known to offer contracts with deadlines, but this year they’re making an exception.
  • Ken Rosenthal writes that the Angels could be “bracing for the loss” of Teixeira to another club.
  • Still, the Red Sox still consider the Angels “a more serious competitor” than the Orioles or Nationals according to New York Times writer Jack Curry.
  • Red Sox GM Theo Epstein didn’t deny that the his team is a “super power financially,” but he told Curry that Boston spends “99%” of its resources on scouting and development. With good reason, Curry suggests that they might be spending more than 1% of their energy on signing Tex.

Odds and Ends: Teixeira, Hunsicker, Burrell

By Tim Dierkes | December 15, 2008 at 2:30pm CDT

Links for Monday…

  • According to the Newberg Report mailing list and CBSSports.com, the Rangers re-signed pitcher Doug Mathis to a minor league deal.
  • Joe Nelson’s been popular since being non-tendered – he’s heard from "at least 12-14 teams."  Ruben Amaro Jr. said today the Phillies inquired on "20 or so" non-tendered players.
  • Adam Everett’s deal with the Tigers is official – $1MM plus incentives.
  • MLB.com’s Barry Bloom spoke to Padres owner John Moores.
  • Richard Justice doesn’t think Drayton McLane would ask Ed Wade to trade Roy Oswalt, but he could see Oswalt requesting a trade.
  • Dave Sheinin says nothing has happened with Mark Teixeira since the Winter Meetings ended, and it’s no coincidence that we haven’t heard much about offers from the Red Sox or Yankees.  Michael Silverman says Boston’s eventual offer to Tex will easily be a record for this ownership group.  He guesses eight years in the $145-175MM range, noting that the Red Sox do not like to have players signed beyond age 36.
  • Buster Olney says the Orioles and Nationals bidding on Tex is "nothing less than lunacy."
  • Gerry Hunsicker has signed an extension to stay with the Rays.
  • RotoAuthority takes a look at Jonathan Sanchez.
  • George King says Kenny Lofton attempted to dissuade C.C. Sabathia from signing with the Yankees.
  • Ken Davidoff says it seems that the Yankees will avoid Scott Boras this offseason.
  • Steve Serby did a Q&A with Omar Minaya, learning details of Minaya’s Winter Meetings dealings.
  • Pat Burrell says he never received a formal offer from the Phillies.  His replacement, Raul Ibanez, will receive three years and $31.5MM.

Odds and Ends: Nelson, Atkins, Taveras

By Tim Dierkes | December 14, 2008 at 6:43pm CDT

After a hectic Winter Meetings, it’s been a slow weekend.  Today’s links…

  • A 3.35 ERA for Phil Hughes next year?  Bill James and Co. think so.
  • Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe talked to Mark Mulder’s agent, Gregg Clifton.  Clifton said, "He’s ready to go for any team right out of the chute."  Clifton shot down talk that Mulder would not be ready in April.
  • The Rays have contacted the agents for Joe Nelson and Scott Proctor.
  • Keith Law likes A.J. Burnett’s upside, but notes the risks.  Peter Abraham compares the Burnett and Johan Santana deals.
  • Law is in favor of the Indians’ Kerry Wood signing.
  • Scott Ostler’s baseball source says people are scratching their heads about the Giants’ Edgar Renteria contract.
  • Bruce Jenkins says the Rockies would trade Garrett Atkins for Jonathan Sanchez.
  • Troy Renck says Willy Taveras has received interest from the Reds, Nationals, and White Sox.
  • Drayton McLane says there are a lot of reasons for Astros fans to be optimistic.
  • The Yankees like Andy Pettitte over Ben Sheets.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Yankees, Teixeira, Bradley, Furcal

By Nat Boyle | December 14, 2008 at 5:45pm CDT

Ken Rosenthal has his latest article up. Let’s go through it.

  • Milton Bradley is weighing his options with the Cubs and Rays. Joe Maddon and the Rays may be a better fit than Lou Piniella and the Cubs. And spending time at DH would allow him to "protect his oft-injured body." But will the Rays meet Bradley’s asking price when they can turn to Bobby Abreu, Jason Giambi, Garret Anderson, or Pat Burrell instead?  Rosenthal adds that the Reds, Angels, and Nationals are also interested in Bradley.
  • Rosenthal says the Yankees are aiming to keep their payroll lower than last season. Despite gorging this holiday season, they’re shedding more than they’re putting on.
  • With regards to Mark Teixeira, Rosenthal reports one general manager says there is a lot of bluffing going on right now to get the Red Sox to go higher.
  • Ty Wigginton has received calls from four teams since being non-tendered by the Astros. His replacement in Houston has yet to be established. Chris Johnson, the team’s third base prospect, had a .539 OPS in Triple A last season.
  • Jerry Hairston Jr. is receiving interest from the Reds and three AL clubs, the Mariners likely being one of them. Says Rosenthal, "Hairston, 32, plays six positions and was a favorite of new M’s manager Don Wakamatsu when both were with the Rangers."  Not sure where the Phillies fit in, but Jay Bruce said Hairston was considering them.  And John Perrotto has the Pirates in the mix for Hairston.
  • The reason Rafael Furcal rejected the A’s offer was that he wants to stay with the Dodgers, so says "one agent." Meanwhile the Dodgers appear to be daring Furcal to leave for a lesser club before making an offer.
