« Glavine In '08 - Undecided | Main | Clemens Back In Houston Next Year? »
On September 6th, Jayson Stark mentioned hearing speculation that Andy Pettitte would opt out of his contract after the season and become the best available starter. But even then his source thought Pettitte's main motivation would be to get more money or years and stay with the Yanks.
It's clear now that Pettitte has no interest in sparking a bidding war for his services, even if he could. According to Ed Price of the Newark Star-Ledger, it's the Yankees or retirement for Pettitte in 2008. It's kind of like Kenny Rogers' situation, only with an added focus on the desires of family. Reading the quotes from Pettitte, it almost seems like he could just exercise the $16MM option rather than opt out to extract a few more million from the Yankees. He just seems like the kind of guy who wouldn't care.
You know what would be kind of funny? If the Astros somehow convinced him to return, gave him $16MM, and then his elbow blew up. OK, that might not be funny for some people.

Come on, retirement.
A-rod less, Mariano less and a rotation of Wang, Hughes, Joba, Ian Kennedy, Moose/Igawa would be sweet.

I have to say when the Yankees signed Pettitte in the off-season, from an objective standpoint, it seemed a little pricey (but as a long-time fan, I was ecstatic to see him return). But given, how much other starters were given this off-season and the low long-term risk of the contract, he's definitely turned out to be one of the best free agent pitcher signings of this past off-season. He's turned out to be a much better signing so far than Jason Schmidt(who had I feel way too much hype during the off-season) and is only a year older. He's also managed to stay healthy a lot better than Schmidt has, which was the main knock against signing Petitte. He's really had a very good season overall. His ERA which is pretty good as it is, was slightly inflated by two back-to-back rough outings earlier in the season and he could easily have about 3-4 more wins than he does if he had gotten better run support when he was the Yankees' only reliable pitcher during their early season woes.
In short, I really hope he returns next year and given the depth of young pitchers the Yankees currently possess, I think Pettitte's been an excellent bridge.

Outside the Lines just reported Pettite has no intentions whatsoever of opting out.

I know you said that in jest, but he's not coming back to the Astros...period.

Im an Astros fan and I would find that, if not funny, then what my friends and I describe as "typical Astros".

I said this after the Stark report.
The big story back when Andy originally signed the contract was that the Yankees had enough trust in him, that they knew he wouldn't exercise the option if he got hurt and couldn't pitch.

Ya I'm pretty sure I wouldnt be laughing if that happened.

I seriously doubt that Pettitte would sign again without his little buddy Roger. If he retires it will be because he can't play with Roger anymore.

Don't forget Posada-less.

mike simms i think you have it the other way around...roger can't seem to go anywhere without his buddy. i'm sure pettitte's decision will play a big part in clemen's decision

Thats assuming the Yankees have any interest whatsoever in bringing Clemens back next year, which I doubt.

"Don't forget Posada-less"
I'm thinking Cashman gives him a blank check. 13mm per for 3 years, or so.
