What is sleep apnea?
Posted by: braves077 | December 09, 2007 at 04:45 PM
I have said it before, I will say it again.
In 3 years time, Craig Hansen will either be one of the most dominant relievers in the game of baseball, or so far off the radar, everyone has forgotten who he is.
Nothing in between.

Sleep apnea and a Jeff Fassero comeback?
There's really no baseball to talk about, is there?
Posted by: tolo316 | December 09, 2007 at 04:49 PM
Umm, what? He can't be an average reliever? That is so stupid. If he regains is slider but not his command, why couldn't he be a decent 6 or 7th inning guy. If Jeff Fassero is making a comeback Hansen could be anything.

I'm sure the Braves and Phillies are watching closely to see if the Mets don't sign Fassero so they can jump right in on him.

What is sleep apnea?
Definition: Sleep apnea occurs when you regularly stop breathing for 10 seconds or longer during sleep. It can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the number of times in an hour that your breathing stops. Hansen's surgery would indicate that a blockage is thought to be the problem in his case.
It is odd that it can be viewed as the cause of a pitchers' bad ERA. But stranger things have happened.

Sleep apnea is a b!tch. I've never heard of it used as an explanation for poor performance in athletics, but it is no joke.
Oh, and the Padres camouflage uni's are pretty cool if you ask me. They sell big all over, too.
The Mets are pathetic. I don't understand Omar Minaya's approach to his pitching staff.
Posted by: 007 | December 09, 2007 at 05:39 PM
Sleep apnea isn't the direct explanation for his performance. The possibility of fatigue and exhaustion brought about by the sleep apnea is the explanation. If you think about how worn down a pitcher can get into the later part of a season and the affect it has on his control and speed (think Okajima) you'll see how those two factors can be important. If they are brought on by sleep apnea then yes, it is no joke.

Jeff Fassero is 45 years old... did he piss away every cent he ever made? Why is he pitching in the Mexican league? Why in the hell are the Mets interested? So bizarre on so many levels.

"There's really no baseball to talk about, is there?"
Hey, Hansen was a 1st-round pick (26th overall) just a couple years ago. He was supposed to be the Red Sox closer by now. He's been shockingly worse than expected; he's worthy of talking about.
Posted by: metafrantic | December 09, 2007 at 07:09 PM
Trust me, sleep apnea is no joke. I am pretty sure I suffer from it, and my friends have mentioned how bad I sound when I sleep. I have gone to my doctor about it, and it was determined that I had really no oxygen being able to go through my nose because the membranes were blocking off my nasal passages (sorry about the medical history of my life.) Reason I am saying all this is that I wonder if severe allergies played a part with Hansen, but I was also wondering if anyone on here knew the exact surgery Hansen had.

In case you haven't noticed, the Mets are 'interested' in EVERY pitcher out there. I think it's just them doing their homework. I'd be suprised if a signing came out of this, and if one does it'll likely be a low risk minor league deal where he'd have to earn his way onto a roster.

I'd comment, but a discussion of the Fassero stuff and its greater implications has already been made here:

Pretty sure Jesse Orasco just rose up out of his grave with a smile on his face......
Posted by: bravesbeast | December 09, 2007 at 10:20 PM
I have sleep apnea. The breathing can be halted for over a minute in some cases. This sounds dangerous but my doctor assured me there has never been a death resulting from it.
it's funny, no matter how much you sleep, you ALWAYS wake up tired. It can be a real problem with school at 8 sometimes, but I'd say it's a poor excuse for his pitching troubles. You can live with it without problems with daily naps and such.

The 3rd biggest payroll in baseball and the best we can do is entertain thoughts of a Jeff Fassero comeback? I'm really starting to lose faith as a Mets fan. Something substantial needs to happen in the coming months. I don't care if it's a Santana trade, swiping Dontrelle Willis (who WILL rebound) from the Tigers, or whatever, but the paying fan who watched that humiliating season-ending loss to the Marlins is not going to be inspired by a Jeff Fassero comeback.
Posted by: | December 09, 2007 at 10:32 PM
Never heard anyone die from it, really? I cannot say I have heard of too many, but I know that they have stated sleep apnea as the main cause of death in Reggie White's passing (rest his soul)!
Posted by: bravesbeast | December 09, 2007 at 10:35 PM
Blaming Hansen's suckitude on his sleep apnea really just highlights how awful he's been as a prospect (both in the bigs and in the minors). The Red Sox touted him as their next closer (you heard plenty of "When Papelbon is back in the rotation, this kid will take over") and people KILLED the Yankees for not taking him, since he was a local product (Bill Madden moaned about it for ages and ages). Listen, baseball is tough on the body, but this seems a more likely excuse for someone with a normal job -- like, say, a construction worker or driver. People who have to drag ass out of bed at five and get to work at six. It's not like Hansen doesn't have ample time to rest before playing ball. Apnea isn't insomnia. And he also seems to be fully pepped up and willing to play videogames. My guess is that he was just an overhyped prospect who in reality never had a 96-mph fastball or a slider he could throw for strikes.

Sorry bravesbeat.. I meant nobody has died from the stoppage of breathing I meant to say. There are other symptoms which can cause death like you said.

Dude, it is a very reasonable cause of his inconsistient performance. How about we see what he can do next year with the improvements from the surgery? Do not hate on the guy for trying to get his life better by removing a pretty serious problem. There are times when sleep apnea does play a big role in wearing you down and making you tired, especially as an athlete. How about you make sure you have your facts straight about just how much this problem affect hansen's life before you blast the guy for no good reason. Get a clue man.
Posted by: | December 10, 2007 at 01:35 AM
Ha, ha. Whatever, dude. I've dealt with sleep-related issues my entire life. And I've gotten up and worked all day -- including things more stressful on the body than pitching an inning of baseball. I'm not "blasting" Hansen. All I said is that he was overhyped -- and he was. The fact that they said he would be their closer almost immediately and he's not even in the big leagues is all you need to know about expectations-versus-reality. I hope Hansen's apnea issues are cleared up and they help his quality of life, but blaming his poor (not "inconsistent") performance on this ailment is borderline pitiful for whoever made it (and it WASN'T Hansen, as far as I know, so he has nothing to do with it).
I didn't "hate on" Hansen. I have no real interest in the guy positively or negatively. But ultra-touchy, blowhard sports fans like you do inspire my hate -- so "get a clue," chill out, and have fun shining that Craig Hansen Fan Club Leader badge. I'm sure you're very proud of it.
Posted by: baileywalk | December 10, 2007 at 02:11 AM
They don't need anything from Hansen right now anyway, so he's irrelevant. Okajima, Delcarmen, Timlin and Papelbon are the bullpen.
Posted by: JD | December 10, 2007 at 06:05 AM
LOL, its not myself being touchy, it is just the fact that you seem to think that just because it is a unusual reason that does not get used regularly, you utimately think it is a excuse. And as you pointed out, Hansen did not use it, which makes it even more than likely to be a reason. Again, let us see how he does next season, then blast him.

If we sign Fassero, I might have to quit being a Mets fan.
Posted by: bsox21 | December 10, 2007 at 06:56 AM
Does that mean you quit posting on this site bsox21, if so, thank god.

oh it was not a problem, i figured you would appreciate it, since it offered about the same insight and intellect that your comments usually do, right on your level of comprehension

bravesbeast,
ur a lovely person. keep up the good work.

I may be mistaken, but I think sleep apnea was a potntial cause of Reggie White's passing. There's no way to tell for sure, but the lack of oxygen could have led to cardiac arrest. Hansen's doesn't seem to be that severe, but it's something you shouldn't take lightly.
