« Miguel Cabrera Talking Extension | Main | Alex Gonzalez Is Out; Who's In? »
Brain Roberts angered pitcher Mark Hendrickson yesterday by stealing a couple of bases. The Florida Marlins starter in Friday's spring game apparently thinks baserunners should lay low during the exhibition season.
The Cubs, though, had two scouts in the stands. The New York Times positioned the larceny as Roberts strutting (or shall we say galloping) his stuff for his potential future employers.

As if players weren't spoiled enough, Hendrickson has the nerve to suggest that Roberts shouldn't steal bases. Do fans pay to get into Spring Training ball games? I don't know, but imagine so. If so, they're entitled to see players TRYING. This attitude always irritates me in the regular season, too--that because a team's up, say 9-0, they shouldn't try so hard. Beyond the obvious competitive fact that you never know if you have enough runs to win, there's an obligation to the fans to give your best. As for Roberts showcasing, Baltimore fans know that Roberts always tries his best; it's second reason (after his skills) why we love him. Maybe there's some extra adrenaline pumping under the circumstances, but it's certainly no surprise to see Roberts trying hard.

>> "I wanted to yell at him, 'What are you doing, trying to get your legs in shape?' " said Hendrickson, implying that Roberts violated an unwritten rule so early in the season.
Said Roberts: "That's what you do here in spring training last time I checked. He's trying to work out his arm, right? What was he doing throwing me sliders?" <<

Selfish baseball players like Hendrickson need to shut up and play the game or not play at all. End of story.

Thanks for that stephan...I hadnt heard that yet. That is really funny, that hendrickson would say something like that.

Hey Mark!!!! Would you like some cheese with your whine??? Spring training is for getting the winter rust off the bodies, base stealers should try and steal, power hitters should hit homers and pitcher should pitch and keep runners from stealing (wait did YOU not fail at this???).Mark quit complaing with your record and already played for 3 teams in 5 years be lucky you have a job.

I don't blame Roberts at all. He should showcase his abilities for the Cubs. Even if he were not in trade rumors, it's called effort. It's sad when effort is belittled by other athletes. As if it is ok to try in certain situations and not to do so in other situations.

While Roberts is someone who approaches the game with effort and hustle, it was a bit odd to see him running like that this early in the spring. He's aware of the rumors, he doesn't want to be part of a rebuilding team and he has shown some interest in coming to Chicago. I'm sure this is part of his game, but it seems to me he has a little extra incentive with Cubs scouts in the audience. And as for Hendrickson, what a huge baby. Maybe he should use the spring to work on holding runners on better. I didn't know opponents were supposed to take it easy on him.

Mark Hendrikson needs to shut his mouth and play the game. Roberts is obviously showing of his skill and if he does this all spring I wouldn't mind trading a Veal, or another player of tht caliber. He brings what we need. Like......
2B- We need him more now because of DeRosa's heart condition and who's to say something like this might not happen again during the season. Also, he could possibly also be a SS option.
Leadoff Hitter- He has great speed and contact. Soriano is probably not going to bat leadoff so here is our guy.
So, lets just try and get this done as soon as possible. I say this is going to be the deal probably.
Ronny Cedeno, Sean Gallagher, Eric Patterson, and the 4th guy possibly
Donnie Veal

Playwright,
" This attitude always irritates me in the regular season, too--that because a team's up, say 9-0, they shouldn't try so hard."
I am not intending to sound like a jerk if I come across that way I apologize. But is there a time that you can take our your starters? I agree with you, if your on the diamond you better be giving 100%.
A certain O's game against the Rangers last season comes to mind. I think they only pulled 1 guy during that game. Granted it was Michael Young.
But looking at the players the rangers ran out there, it was all the backups anyway. Botts, Salty, Cruz, Byrd, Vazquez, Murphy, and Catalanotto was even playing 1b, so I dont know what they could have done differently.
But assuming its your every day line up, at what point should the team, espcially a road team pull the starting pitcher, and maybe put in a few guy who normally dont get the playing time?
But in context of this.. Mark is a schmuck and I applaud what Roberts reply was.

Cubbies2008, I agree that we should get Roberts, but giving Cedeno, Gallgher and Patterson should be plenty. I dont think that trading a young lefty like Veal is worthwhile. If they want pitching give them Marquis and a little cash to make the trade.

Buddha, I'm with you on that one. I think Roberts response makes me like him even more. I can see Piniella and Chicago loving this guy.
Ryno, I'd like the O's to take your offer but I can't see it happening. I have to think that either Ceda or Veal or a similar talent will be involved in addition to Gallagher and Cedeno. In my opinion, Gallagher alone will make this a good deal for the Orioles in 3 years but no one can guarantee that, so the Cubs probably will have to throw in another young talent to lessen the Orioles risk on this deal. If Veal and Gallagher fufill their potential, then the Orioles will have made out like bandits. But if the Cubs make a couple of runs at a championship -- and (gasp) maybe even win one, then the deal would be well worth it.

Maybe Mark wasn't paying attention one game prior, when teammate Hanley Ramirez stole two bases off the O's. I'm sure once he realized it had happened, he sat Hanley down and explained that what he did was wrong and he shouldn't do it again. lol
