« Sheets & Sabathia Head Next Year's Free Agent Class | Main | K-Rod Won't Negotiate During Season »
Chris Haft at MLB.com reports the Giants have designated lefty reliever Steve Kline for assignment. Adds Haft,
"Dropping Kline... was not completely unexpected. Kline, 35, is coming off his worst season since his rookie year of 1997, having posted a 4.70 ERA and more walks than strikeouts last year. He also allowed left-handed batters to hit .318 off him. This spring, Kline owned a 5.40 ERA in 11 appearances and had yielded 17 hits in 11 2/3 innings."
Lefties who can't get lefties out aren't well sought after. Still, somebody will probably take a flier on Kline. Any ideas as to who could use him?

Tigers might try, but his stats from last year and spring suggest again it.

The Twins only have 1 lefty on their 25-man roster and thats Dennys Reyes, who had a disappointing season last year. The only lefty bullpen guy down in AAA is Carmen Cali and he is nothing special. So I could see the Twins picking him up and maybe using him as the Twins 13th pitcher. The Twins have very young pitching and that bullpen is going to get tired so I think we should send down either Tolbert or Punto and get a lefty (Kline) in the bullpen.

The Tigers did just pick up Fultz, though. The Yankees can't be happy with only Billy Traber as an option. He's had a nice Spring but he doesn't have a great track record. I could see them giving Kline a minor league contract and calling him up if he's doing the job down at AAA.

The Phillies had been interested in Kline and were shopping Wes Helms to the Giants in return. They could take a shot at him, but they probably have better in-house options than Kline.

I could see the Nationals going after Kline, as Ray King is the only lefty they've got in the pen. They went after Mike Stanton in 05 and 06 and flipped him at the deadline both times. I can see them doing the same with Kline.

I think the O's win biggest Designation. They DFA Jay Gibbons and his 2 years $11.9 Mil contract.

Once in a while the Giants management gets things right...
We will suck this year, but at least we are shipping off the old guys.

I hope the Cubs don't sign him. Both he and his dirty hat can stay in San Fransisco.
Maybe he can go back to St. Louis and fight with LaRussa some more?
