Uber gay that the Braves picked up Gotay.. Especially, so a bench spot can be reserved for Fernando freakin Tatis...

As a Mets fan, I think I'm more bummed about Register than Gotay.
Posted by: stellar | March 28, 2008 at 02:21 PM
Ditto Hyro, I cannot fathom why they made that decision. Where is NRMax when we need a Mets fan to commiserate with?

Brady Clark > Jose Valentin > Fernando Tatis

What are the Braves gonna do with Gotay anyway? He's not exactly the "power bat" they wanted for the bench...

Bit of a head-scratcher since he doesn't play 1st, Prado/Infante are already the backup IFs.

Stellar, I agree. I have nothing against Gotay, but never really cared much for his game. He is a solid guy off the bench, but nothing more really. He cant field at all, and is just awful against LHP. I think that a lot of Mets fans were higher on him then the Mets brass, and the rest of the league. Register is a little bit of a head scratcher to me, especially with all the questionmarks in the bullpen, and the option of starting Duaner on the DL, or sending Smith down to AAA or trading Sosa to make a spot for this guy.

Thought 1) Infante will be out for most if not all of April and the Braves want someone with ML experience on the bench. (Meaning Lillibridge starts the season in Richmond.)
Thought 2) Gotay is a Brave for less than 48 hours, packaged in a trade before the 25-man is set, possibly with Prado, Pena, Thorman or some other bench/bullpen player for the bat they really want.

Yea i think with the braves getting him it allows them to trade a young INF plus another piece for something that they do really want. With doing so they would get to hold onto prado and lillibridge

Thank GOD Scott Thorman is off the 25-man.

Thorman cleared waivers that works on even better with the trade. maybe he can put up some decent numbers and up his trade value now
Posted by: thedeuce | March 28, 2008 at 03:21 PM
trade was suppose to be claiming gotay not sure what i was thinking
Posted by: thedeuce | March 28, 2008 at 03:22 PM
With as well as he played this Spring, I bet Prado is going to be gone. Probably for some Jeff Conine clone....baugh.

Hurray! Thorman problem solved.

"packaged in a trade before the 25-man is set, possibly with Prado, Pena, Thorman or some other bench/bullpen player for the bat they really want"
Well, that fine collection of talent could an equal collection of garbage from nearly any team in the majors.

Goddamn Angels. Why not trade Nathan Haynes? Why get nothing? Even a low A arm. It happens all the time. So damn lazy.

Devlsh,
Yeah, you're not going to get an All-Star for that crowd. But there may be a decent bench bat to be had, depending on what the other team needs. I'd say, for instance, that Brayan Pena's offense is on a par if not better than most backup catchers and maybe even some starters (Lo Duca? B. Molina anyone?). With Pena plus another player, you may get a guy with some thump who doesn't need 250 AB to be effective.
The Braves had that guy a couple years ago in D. Ward. They also had cheapskate owners who wouldn't pay him. Now's different. We'll see.

While I agree with the general feeling the braves are going to make another trade, i actually like the idea of getting gotay. He is a switch hitting bench option, and he will be on the team with prado until infante returns, which means that the Braves are being smart and are going to put lillibridge in Triple A so he can play everyday. It also proves the braves are still on the lookout for another power bench bat, and the candidates to be traded to acquire that bat remain pena and royce ring, maybe resop. Thorman has no trade value, simply because if teams did not want him for free off waivers, no team is going to give up value for him either. It excites me that we got Gotay for free, but excites me even more that we still get to keep thorman and seem to have opened a spot that will be feeled through another trade for a proven productive bench bat.

“Goddamn Angels. Why not trade Nathan Haynes? Why get nothing? Even a low A arm. It happens all the time. So damn lazy.”
Not trading an out-of-options 28YO 11year minor league vet who will be joining his 5th club when there are only like 20 other, better, OFers available on the market is lazy? Interesting…
“Thorman has no trade value, simply because if teams did not want him for free off waivers, no team is going to give up value for him either.”
…Actually, if he was on ML Waivers its not likely someone would have claimed him if they felt the Braves would just recall him. Say the Giants wanted him for instance (and just randomly using them). Well, if the Giants made a claim on him then the Braves would be forced to trade him to the Giants, let him go to the Giants for free or keep him in the Majors. If that was the case, and all the Braves wanted to do with him was send him to the minors ~ well, you could probably imagine the Braves would be frustrated with the Giants making a trade less likely. The Giants best bet to actually acquiring Thorman would be to let him pass through waivers, then contact the Braves and see if they can work something out. It’s the DFA or Outright waivers which claims are generally made on, not the revokable ones as much…

Nah, the Braves would have let Thoman go if he were claimed. They really can't afford to carry him on the 25 man roster another year.
By the way Darkstar, he would not go to a claiming team for free. There is a monetary exchange. I believe that it's 25K. Also, since Thorman was out of options I think he was put on outright waivers.
